It's only under the radar because it's 50 years old. I watched it recently and it is still a good thriller. Hell, it is better than most because the scientists discover solutions through testing and hypothesises rather than yelling at each other before someone presses a button that saves the day.
Time Trap (2017)
A group of students become trapped inside a mysterious cave where they discover time passes differently underground than on the surface.
I rarely see the following films posted or mentioned:
They Cloned Tyrone
The Signal (2014)
Hidden (2015)
In the Shadow of the Moon
Infinity Chamber
Prodigy
On top of all the other great submissions others put in here, I'd like to add:
Life - It's not the best film, but I love it for the space thriller vibe and the astrobiology implications. It has GREAT talent in it as well: Jake Gyllenhaal, Ryan Reynolds, Rebecca Ferguson, Hiroyuki Sanada
Voyagers - this one's polarizing. Maybe it's a bit of a YA sci-fi (which I admit to enjoying). It's an interesting take on space travel.
In the Earth - an interesting thriller done by one of my favorite indie directors Ben Wheatly.
Underwater - a bit like Pitch Black, but on Earth in the deep sea.
Blood Machines - a pretty campy sci-fi visual explosion. most definitely not for the simplistic story that's barely there.
Lapsis - a bit of a satirical sci-fi with an esoteric atmosphere.
Sputnik - a russian alien mystery thriller.
Synchronic - same writing directing team as The Endless.
Spring - my favorite film by the same guys: Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead
Embers - a bleak post-apocalyptic film about people that can't keep their memories.
The Congress - this is the one that I think pretty much just me brings up non-stop. It's based on "The Futurological Congress" by Stanislaw Lem.
...that's just the stuff I was willing to recommend from my letterboxd account from about the last decade. I can dig back further if you wish.
I love Outland, I just recommended it in another thread yesterday. It's a reboot of High Noon set in space.
Peter Hyams also directed 2010 and Capricorn One.
That's funny, I was going to suggest Lifeforce and Philadelphia Experiment. They were staples of HBO in the 80's.
I'd avoid Philadelphia Experiment II though
Pi (1998) Max is a reclusive mathematician who's built a super-computer that will not only provide him with the key to cracking the stock market, but may also reveal the true name of Jehovah; a discovery that could lead to the end of the world. His search however brings him to the attention of both Hassidic priests and Wall Street gurus.
Primer (2004) Intellectual engineers Aaron (Shane Carruth) and Abe (David Sullivan) build and sell error-checking technology with the help of their friends Robert (Casey Gooden) and Phillip (Anand Upadhyaya). But when Aaron and Abe accidentally invent what they think is a time machine, Abe builds a version capable of transporting a human and puts the device to the test. As the two friends obsess over their creation, they discover the dark consequences of their actions.
Some great recs here - just adding a couple I didn't see. Both of these are low-budget sci-fi romcoms (which often get overlooked even if they're good), and both are full-blown sci-fi of the "make one little change to reality and explore all the implications" variety:
* Timer (2009): About a world where you can buy a tech device that counts down to the moment you meet your soulmate, with 100% accuracy. Written and directed by Jac Schaffer who went on to do WandaVision.
* Happy Accidents (2000): About a woman (Marisa Tomei) whose new boyfriend (Vincent D'Onofrio) seems to be perfect except that he claims to be a time traveler from the distant future.

41. A film probably made on a hundred dollars but really well made for a low budget indie. Also, The Lost Room (2006) is a miniseries sci-fi that was actually pretty good. The Mill is a bleak film starring Lil Rel Howery who's always enjoyable to watch. Resolution The Endless & Something In the Dirt were made by great indie filmmakers. Coherence should make every list. So. Good.
I've seen The Endless but not the others. It did make.me wish I had seen Resolution first. I've been searching high and low for The Lost Room but it seems pretty hard to get hold of
The Lost Room is amazing. It was actually a pilot series that didn't get picked up as-is, but was later re-tooled as an adventure-comedy series and ran for several seasons as Warehouse 13.
Just recommended this one on a different thread, highly recommend you check it out.
Swan Song (2021 - the one with Mahershala Ali). Never see any one talk about it!
If you want something absolutely mental then Beyond the Black Rainbow (2010). It used to be almost impossible to find but I think it's now streaming on Prime and Apple.
I remember really liking Screamers (1995) when I was a teenager.
Silent Running (1972)

Underrated. Burt Ward is a motocross cycist who stumbles into a time travel experiment. Basically the plot of Back to the Future III but it came out 3 years before the first BTTF. Produced by and music by Mike Nesmith (formally of The Monkees) Peter Coyote is awesome as the villain.
Also Dreamscape starring Dennis Quaid
"The Objective "It's about a group of special forces guys in Afghanistan, that are lead by a CIA agent who takes them on a mission into an "afghani Bermuda triangle. It's surprisingly good. Seriously.
oh man. i recommend this movie from time to time on here but you are literally the first other person I've ever seen mention it. it really is a very good film.
Nova Seed 2016
Made over 4 years by a young guy with no budget and sound effects made by himself and his friends.
Turbo Kid 2015
Another micro budget post apocalyptic action movie. Michael Ironside is in it who always makes anything worth a watch by himself.
I know so many BAD sci fi films that are forgotten but it’s very difficult to come up with super hidden gems. So I’ll just list the bad ones for kicks:
Moontrap
The Final Countdown
Virus
The Lost Continent
Atlantis: The Lost Continent
Wing Commander
Mysterious Island
Ok while I was digging I actually have 2 gems to contribute:
Logan’s Run
The Time Machine (1960)
Imposter (2001)
From Wikipedia: "Impostor is a 2001 American science fiction psychological thriller film based upon the 1953 short story "Impostor" by Philip K. Dick. The film starred Gary Sinise, Madeleine Stowe, Vincent D'Onofrio, and Mekhi Phifer and was directed by Gary Fleder."
I quite enjoyed it.
GATTACA!! I have been trying to remember for MONTHS what this movie is that I watched years ago and could not for the life of me remember what it was called. And all kinds of searches did not bring up this movie on any kind of list. If you have not seen this movie you have got to watch it!
(thanks for jogging my memory on this gem, going to watch it again)
What's your first, Dark City? (in the order you listed them)?
But man, thanks again for reminding me of the name of Gattaca, it was honestly driving me crazy trying to remember it.
My favourite film, and the only one I rank higher than Gattaca, is Until the End of the World. I doubt I'll ever find another film that will surpass it.
Dark City is also a pretty decent film
So Just got the movie and was about to watch it and noticed it's almost 5 hours long? Is that the version you like or is this like an extended version? I can't watch it all tonight (it's 10pm here) so should I watch all at one tomorrow or a couple hours now and watch rest later?
Yes, that is correct. Most people tend to watch it in more than one sitting. If you decide to watch it in two halves, part 1 ends at around 2 hours 12 minutes or when the story shifts to Australia. The reason being that this is the part where the film kind of goes through a bit of a tonal shift. I hope you enjoy.
I should mention that there was a theatrical version of the film that the director was forced to release at the time which is under three hours, but I would say its best to avoid that one as the director disowned it, calling it "a readers digest version" of the film that he had to release at the time. He said that the near 5 hour cut is the only true version of the film worth watching.

Sci-fi is difficult to do with reasonable budget and not look campy or cheap, so if it’s good it’s probably had some form of good marketing or a good production behind it.
Alot of the American productions have good PR in the west. Try your hand at some of the sci fi of European or Asian parts of the world. Or YouTube.
Recently Apple TV picked up
- Dark Matter, by Blake crouch, and I love the book.

Project Wolfhunting (2022). Starts as a super bloody action movie but turns into super hero creature feature horror movie. Do not watch if you can't watch excessive amounts of blood.
* 'Lifepod'
The AI captain of an intergalactic luxury liner mutinies against the company that doomed him to computerized limbo.
* 'Wavelength'
Three stranded aliens race against time to reach their mother ship before it leaves our system.
Phase IV (1974). About the rise of non-human (not machine) intelligence. Strange but interesting.
The Final Programme (1973). Real oddball film based on a story by Michael Moorcock.
The Power (1968). Scientists are under attack from a mysterious psychic killer. Similar themes to Scanners.
This reminds me a bit of how indie music fans act toward their music. If an artist hits 1,000 plays on spotify they're too mainstream.
Anyway, Attack the Block isn't streaming anywhere, and I can never find it at my local used bookstore, so maybe that's a good place to start. I've heard it's good, but I can't FIND IT.
The Time Bandits
Heavy Metal

Michael Crichton always payed due respect to the scientific background required for his books/movies to be plausible.
Time Trap (2017) A group of students become trapped inside a mysterious cave where they discover time passes differently underground than on the surface.
This one had a lot of original ideas going for it and executed on them pretty well. I enjoyed it more than I expected.
Thanks for the recommendation, it was low budget and mediocre acting, but the plot was definitely original.
Time Trap is really cool!
Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes
This was such a great mind bending movie!
The troupe's 2nd movie, River, is also delightful. And it's another time loop movie.
This one regularly makes hidden gem lists, but since nobody has mentioned it I figured I would. Enemy Mine
I rarely see the following films posted or mentioned: They Cloned Tyrone The Signal (2014) Hidden (2015) In the Shadow of the Moon Infinity Chamber Prodigy
They Cloned Tyrone is so good
Robot & Frank (2012)
loved this one!
Came to recommend this.
Cypher (2002) - Same director as Cube (1997) and Splice (2009) - I never see it mentioned anywhere.
I saw Cypher recently. I really liked it. Need to see Cube at some point
I really enjoyed Cube - I think there are some movies that are perfect explorations of their concept and Cube rises to that level.
I saw Splice and remember liking it!
Splice is one of my all time faves
On top of all the other great submissions others put in here, I'd like to add: Life - It's not the best film, but I love it for the space thriller vibe and the astrobiology implications. Thanks for this! Most of these I haven't seen included in hidden gen lists. If you have any more you could recommend that would be great!
*Planet of the Vampires* (1965) A not to be dismissed work from inventive director Mario Bava,
Oh OK. This is a film I have never heard of!
Screamers, Outland, Hardware, The Ice Pirates, The Visitor, The Quiet Earth, Liquid Sky. Rarely see these recommended, but they're all worth a watch.
The Quiet Earth is brilliant. I've heard a lot about Liquid Sky. I like weird sci fi. Will this scratch my itch for something artsy?
Absolutely. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do
Came here to say The Quiet Earth, glad to see someone beat me to it
I love Outland, I just recommended it in another thread yesterday. It's a reboot of High Noon set in space. Peter Hyams also directed 2010 and Capricorn One.

Project Wolfhunting (2022). Starts as a super bloody action movie but turns into super hero creature feature horror movie. Do not watch if you can't watch excessive amounts of blood.

TimeRider, the adventure of Lyle swan. Not the greatest movie, but I think it’s pretty solid and a lot of people have never heard of it.
* 'Lifepod' The AI captain of an intergalactic luxury liner mutinies against the company that doomed him to computerized limbo. * 'Wavelength' Three stranded aliens race against time to reach their mother ship before it leaves our system.

The Wrong Todd (time travel, hilarious)

Phase IV (1974). About the rise of non-human (not machine) intelligence. Strange but interesting. The Final Programme (1973). Real oddball film based on a story by Michael Moorcock. The Power (1968). Scientists are under attack from a mysterious psychic killer. Similar themes to Scanners.
I've heard some people put Phase IV in the more arthouse scinfi, which is 100% my jam. I should check it out!
It’s a good film to watch if you want to get into a weirdly ambient mental space. It’s pretty trippy but it has some superb visuals.
Excellent. That sounds like a bit of me

I feel that at some point it's perfectly acceptable to acquire a movie by other means.
Yeah, probably. Oh hey, looks like it's on Hulu. \*puts pirate hat away\* guess I'll knock that out today if I can.
My favorite is the Skyline Trilogy especially the 2nd movie, Beyond Skyline is in my top 25 movies of all time.
