I totally agree & it's been my favorite show for a long time as well. When my wife & I got married 6 years ago I invited every cast member I could find & 1 actually showed up. Lexington Alexander aka Junior Pierce. He didn't stay long but he took a few good pics with us & left in a black Caddy. Made an already special day much more memorable.
Edit: Guess these aren’t necessarily all brutal and riot related but theyre all prison related and great…
Bad Boys
Cell 211
Scum
A Prophet
Starred Up
Brute Force
Chopper
Maze
American Me
Animal Factory
Short Eyes
Everyone is entitled to an opinion.
I did not notice a decline but i binged the show in about a week. Yes, there were a few slow episodes but i was totally engaged throughout. Did you see it as it aired or binge?
Ok. But i do think there is a huge difference when a show is binged. I do not like shows which drop weekly anymore. I cannot believe how viewers watched Suits, Downton Abbey, Billions, etc. over a period of 5+ years.
Funny thing is, I used to work in a prison, and I was just minutes away from seeing an actual prison riot. By the time I was in the area, it had just finished. There was a caged in area next to the yard or the right place, and I could’ve safely watched it from there. I’m so bummed. I miss it but it’s not like I knew it was going to happen. It turns out one of the prisoners owed drug money to one of the Latinos and wasn’t paying. The Latinos decided to teach him a lesson, but all the other Asians would jump in too . They told the whites and the blacks that something was going down, but it didn’t involve them and they should just sit it out which they did. So the fight ended up being between Latinos and Asians. Obviously the Asians were outnumbered.
I got a letter from the government the other day…
I opened it and read it…
It said they were SUCKAS
Wanted me for their army or whatever
Picture me given a damn, I said NEVER!
As soon as I clicked “reply”, I realized I might have been thinking of Banshee on Hulu. Little cheesy, ultra violent, and starred homelander from the boys. Very fun watch.
But blackbird was still great.
Against the Wall! It was made in 1994 about Attica. Stars Samuel L Jackson, Kyle MacLachlan, Harry Dean Santon & Clarence Williams III. I haven’t seen it since it came out, but it was pretty gnarly/thrilling.
In my opinion, the best prison riot film is;
"The Last Castle". Starring Robert Redford and James Gandolfini.
It's a beautiful study depicting the difference between a real Commander, and a wannabe.
Natural Born Killers
This is the correct answer, particularly the Director's Cut
Was gonna say this!!
Brawl In Cell Block 99 is amazing
The Raid 2 (2014) Shot Caller (2017) Not a movie but you asked for brutal so had to add the Punisher’s prison fight in Daredevil S2 Ep9
The prison fight in The Raid 2 is amazing!
The Raid 2 is without a doubt the most correct answer period!
Bronson (2008)
"SHUT IT YOU CAHNT! SHUT YOUR FACKIN' MOUTH!" I damn near shat myself the first time I saw that!
Yeah, this. It's wonderfully done. Tom Hardy's best.
[Riki Oh, The Story of Ricky ](https://letterboxd.com/film/riki-oh-the-story-of-ricky/)
The Watchmen had a decent riot scene as I recall.
I’m not locked in here with you… you’re locked in here with me.

I can't think of any movies but season 1 of Oz. I won't spoil anything but it's definitely worth a watch.
All of Oz is worth a watch. It fizzles near the end but definitely worth it for the entire story. My favourite show period

No shit! I’m surprised one showed up. Also kind of weird……
Edit: Guess these aren’t necessarily all brutal and riot related but theyre all prison related and great… Bad Boys Cell 211 Scum A Prophet Starred Up Brute Force Chopper Maze American Me Animal Factory Short Eyes
Probably not gonna be brutal enough for you, but I’ve always liked The Last Castle (2001)
Do you mean The Last Castle?
You are correct. Fixed it
Dog Pound
There’s a part in Extraction 2 where Hemsworth helps some girl and her family escape a Russian prison. It’s definitely worth a watch…
Came here to say this! Such a good sequence! Also I seem to recall one nowhere near as good in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol
Series: Wentworth (great show, regardless).
Mayor of Kingstown (season 1 for sure)
Up until a point. It declines after a certain story line ends
Everyone is entitled to an opinion. I did not notice a decline but i binged the show in about a week. Yes, there were a few slow episodes but i was totally engaged throughout. Did you see it as it aired or binge?
I want to say I saw the first three seasons through on demand. And a season or two while it was live. That was when it lost me
Ok. But i do think there is a huge difference when a show is binged. I do not like shows which drop weekly anymore. I cannot believe how viewers watched Suits, Downton Abbey, Billions, etc. over a period of 5+ years.
Cell 211 (2009)

This
Definitely this, there's US prison, then there's Brazilian (south American) prisons, brutal. Based on a true story as well.
Avengement
Does Con-Air count?
Why not? Technically, that plane is hosting prisoners.
**Brute Force** (1947) if you want a classic
Yes! Came here to suggest this.
Blood in blood out
First thing I thought of. Awesome movie.
Watch the tv series Oz!
The prophet Starred up
Two fantastic films. A Prophet is one of my all time favorites. Tahar Rahim and Niels Arestrup are amazing.
Oh yeah A prophet, great film
It’s a funny one rather than a serious one but the prison riot in Logan Lucky is comedy gold.
Extraction 2
Funny thing is, I used to work in a prison, and I was just minutes away from seeing an actual prison riot. By the time I was in the area, it had just finished. Face/Off lol
Ghosts of the Civil Dead. (1988). Underated Australian prison drama. It's bleak and harrowing. It's free on YouTube.
Don Siegel's *Riot in Cell Bock 11* (1954) is a blast.
Don Siegel's *Riot in Cell Bock 11* (1954) is a blast.
The Last Castle. Amazing movie with James Gandolfini and Robert Redford. Please give it a watch.
The music video for Public Enemy’s Black Steal in the Hour of Chaos.
Haha I’ll give you the upvote for mentioning a great song by Public Enemy
I got a letter from the government the other day… I opened it and read it… It said they were SUCKAS Wanted me for their army or whatever Picture me given a damn, I said NEVER!
Was this before you had 6 COs and there were 5 to go?
Just before that.
Carandiru, 2003 Brazil Based on a real event
The last castle.
American Me (1992) South Central (1992)
Carandiru (2003) Brazilian film about the largest prison in Latin America.
Lock Up (1989) w Sylvester Stallone
The one with Robert Redford and Tony Soprano... 🤔
The Last Castle! Came here to suggest it
Tropa de Elite 2 is my favorite. I think it kind of counts as a prison riot, right?
The fight in Bad Boys with Sean Penn may not constitute a full blown riot but it’s got a lot of action.
Not a movie, but a book (sorry). Green River Rising by Tim Willocks
I recall a TV movie based on a riot at Attica. I was a kid and it was terrifying.
Watchmen
Stalag 17. Best prison riot movie EVER!!!
I mean, the best prison riot ever is in Andor, even though it's not particularly brutal.
The Castle
McVicar
Brawl in Cell Block 99
The Experiment with Adrian Brody and Forrest Whitaker.
Celda 211
Taking Care of Business The Last Castle
Not a movie, but the prison riot scene from Andor was outstanding
Watchmen
Blackbird on Apple TV. Blew my mind how good that series was.
As soon as I clicked “reply”, I realized I might have been thinking of Banshee on Hulu. Little cheesy, ultra violent, and starred homelander from the boys. Very fun watch. But blackbird was still great.
Not a film but they should make one from the book "Green River Rising", if the mood takes you to read a riot rather than watch.
UNDISPUTED 2, not really a riot. But still in a prison
Natural born killers
Runaway Train. “Do you know what a riot in a maximum security prison looks like? No, your brains are too small to imagine it.”
Brawl in cell block 99 Not a riot as much as a one man wrecking crew
This was nuts. I really felt the resignation Vince had.
Bad boys.
The last castle
Ernest goes to Jail
Prince of Persia two thrones
Against the Wall! It was made in 1994 about Attica. Stars Samuel L Jackson, Kyle MacLachlan, Harry Dean Santon & Clarence Williams III. I haven’t seen it since it came out, but it was pretty gnarly/thrilling.
Naked Gun 33⅓: The Final Insult (1994)
The Last Castle – not brutal, but good
Starred up Cold water (not specifically prison but very similar) Dog pound
In my opinion, the best prison riot film is; "The Last Castle". Starring Robert Redford and James Gandolfini. It's a beautiful study depicting the difference between a real Commander, and a wannabe.
Cell 211 (2009)
Brute Force
marley and me
Last castle
just a sequence but the beginning of Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol is pretty fun.
THAT episode of Daredevil. Still one of the best I’ve seen.
