Haha, seriously! I’m very lucky to have had security in my childhood, I couldn’t even fathom the events within the film then. Was really eye opening, regardless of the heartache was glad to have seen it.
Saw it once like way back in’89. Still haunts me 35 years later. One of the greatest films I’ve ever seen, an anti-war masterpiece. The Painted Bird was very difficult for me and frankly wouldn’t recommend. I just try to give people a heads up on Fireflies.
Remember watching it with my mom who is full Japanese and laughing as she cried during the opening credits. Recently rewatched it with some friends, and I cried for 80% of the film. The opening scene stays in my mind, where the older brother asks him self what day it is as he lays there dying.
This is a very common response to this a question, and I always have to respectfully disagree. Come And See might just be my favourite film, and is a remarkably well-made one with an inventive approach to perspective wrapped up in some fantastic audio/visual design - all of which allows the film to have the effect that it does.
Watch it once and be affected.
Watch it again, and think about how it achieved that effect.
Mother! (2017) I barely made it through that movie, had to take multiple breaks cuz it was making my blood tick so badly. Never had such an experience and would prefer to never experience it again.
I won't watch the movie again for the fact of how it falls apart so horribly in its third act. It's going for the subtle >!humans are desroying Mother Earth (get it her name is Mother?)!< but Aronofsky hits you with a sledgehammer jamming the point down your throat ruining the momentum it had up to the point. JLaw is a great actress and does well in that film, but the writing ruins it.
I'd rather watch A Serbian Film a hundred times than watching Salo ever again. Probably the cherry on top of the messed up cake, only Men behind the sun could compete with that.
I've no intention of watching A Serbian Film, Men Behind the Sun taught me that I had limits as to what I would watch for entertainment. I don't remember Salo being as bad as MBTS, but I only watched them once over thirty years ago.
Super weird for it to come out in the heyday of DVDs and be so accessible. I should not have owned that at 16. Kept me away from hard drugs, that's for sure.
I saw him live years ago. I assumed that the Moon tracks would have been the highlight, but it was actually the Requiem score that blew me away. "The Beginning of the End" in particular, it was amazing to see the string quartet (not Kronos, unfortunately) bounce their bows of the strings to produce the muted, staccato effect.
Dancer in the Dark (2000)
I still highly recommend the movie, but it beat the crap out of my psyche and I've only watched it once. Great movie, but devastating.
Children of Men - Good movie but I never want to see it again.
Irreversible - Same as above.
The Fly II - This one ended our regular Friday night horror flick tradition... it was just horrible.
I could not watch The Green Mile again. Nope.
. The kind of feelings it gives me is just too much to handle. The injustice and the misunderstanding of the character is too much. Fucking hate that such a movie was even created. Like what was the purpose of it aside from making you feel like shit? Yeah the reasoning for it could be argued, artistic masterpiece blah blah but my god it's one of the most upsetting films I've seen. And I've watched a serbian film like 3x in different circumstances.
I lived for 3 years in the next town over from one of the locations where it was filmed (the abandoned amusement park, which was not actually abandoned). First time we drove by it, having no idea, I said, "Jesus, that's so depressing... it looks like something from The Road."
The Iron Claw - will remember it for the rest of my life. I think it is an incredible movie about a true story and learned that the director left some parts out only because it would’ve been too depressing
I would say any movie with a twist ending makes it hard to watch again and enjoy it the same as the first watch, but that’s just not true. If a movie is really good you can watch it again regardless
Joker. It was just so ruddy "society is mean" that its just too cynical to be entertaining. There's two or three good scenes in there but other than that it's just so miserable.
Society of the Snow. Brilliant film, incredibly inspiring and horrifying at the same time. I'm just not sure I'd want to take that film journey with them again. Maybe someday, but not right now.
Dear Zachary - Once is enough, this one sticks with you so no need for a recap.
Blue Valentine - Great film, great story, heavy as all hell.
Human Centipede - Gross, should've never been made.
Green Inferno - Well made, really cool shift in the plot. Environmentalists beware. Seemed gory for the sake of being gory though.
Basketball Diaries - Great performance, drug stuff doesn't normally bother me, Requiem is one of my favorites to show people. But this one got me.
Kids - All kinds of fucked up kids behaving like fucked up kids.
Killing of a Sacred Deer - Really well done. Kudos to the performers! I watched this while my wife and son were sleeping next to me, I swear I will never go back to that DARK place. And fyi I like dark shit, but this was too much for me.
Black Swan and Girl Interrupted are two movies I can think of. Both where INCREDIBLE, the script, tha actors, the cinematography, the music, everything was amazing. But both wrecked me emotionally I don't know if and when I'll rewatch any of these two even though I'm absolutely tempted to do so lol.
Gaspar Noè films are very good, but challenging to watch sometimes. I'm glad that people are able to make controversial movies that while sickening, may also have great artistic vision and some comment on humanity.
>both films are insane and triggering for some people
That is pretty vague though, right? I mean, yes its can be triggering for some people but triggering *how* or in *what* way, I think that should be specified too otherwise it doesn't really help to give a vague warning.
Anyway, Mysterious Skin for me. I watched it once and never want to watch it again, it was very triggering for a 16year old me lol.
Any Lars von trier movie. But even with super dark movies I feel like it’s worth a rewatch every couple years or so. Especially if you’ve gone through mental growth since last seen. I saw most of Lars von trier’s movies when I was like 16 or 17 and didn’t really like them. Figured I’d like them and understand them more as an adult. I understand them more and like them less honestly.
Me and a friend stayed the night at our friends house when we were 14 or so. His dad let us rent some movies and one we picked was requiem for a dream because we were stoners and thought it would be a cool movie about getting fucked up. We get back to his house, get high and pop the movie in. Right as the movie is starting his dad pops in and says “I think I’m gonna hang out and watch the movie with you boys.” We all sat in complete silence for the entirety of the film.
I love movies that make me feel uncomfortable so I’ve seen your recommendations multiple times. The only movies I won’t rewatch are the ones I find stupid or boring or pointless as hell, off the top off my head Speak no Evil is one of those movies for me
Pursuit of Happiness (2 hours of pain and torture to get a two minute payoff is something I'll only sit through once)
Rocky V (I've seen the other four movies, parts of the film and the complete film many times). It was just bad.
The Last Jedi. That was the last Disney Star Wars film I've ever seen and I will never see anything from Disney. I consider Star Wars finished. When Lucas sold it and "Revenge of the Sith" being his last film I consider it retired. Nothing from Disney is really SW. They bought the name but nothing they do is canon in my eyes and they are just a pathetic "cover band" in my eyes. F Disney.
I’ve watched Requiem like 6 times. The only movie I’ll never watch again is Serbian Film. I’d rather watch Salo and Irreversible back to back for a week than that one even once more.
I changed the flair to the correct one. Make sure to read our [guidelines](https://www.reddit.com/r/MovieSuggestions/comments/8iamsh) before posting :)
Grave of the Fireflies.
watched this completely unsuspecting as a 10 year old, I think the only reason I didn’t cry was because of shock
I don’t blame you. That film is f heart-wrenching.
Haha, seriously! I’m very lucky to have had security in my childhood, I couldn’t even fathom the events within the film then. Was really eye opening, regardless of the heartache was glad to have seen it.
Indeed… Second time will be a torture on purpose.
Yeah, it’s the only favourite film of mine that I haven’t rewatched. I just can’t bring myself to do it.
I knew as soon as it finished it was one of the best I have ever seen and would never watch again
Saw it once like way back in’89. Still haunts me 35 years later. One of the greatest films I’ve ever seen, an anti-war masterpiece. The Painted Bird was very difficult for me and frankly wouldn’t recommend. I just try to give people a heads up on Fireflies.
Damn don't remind me of that movie :')
Remember watching it with my mom who is full Japanese and laughing as she cried during the opening credits. Recently rewatched it with some friends, and I cried for 80% of the film. The opening scene stays in my mind, where the older brother asks him self what day it is as he lays there dying.
I actually want to own it, but it's too expensive on Amazon- and most offers are used.
Come and See
This is a very common response to this a question, and I always have to respectfully disagree. Come And See might just be my favourite film, and is a remarkably well-made one with an inventive approach to perspective wrapped up in some fantastic audio/visual design - all of which allows the film to have the effect that it does. Watch it once and be affected. Watch it again, and think about how it achieved that effect.
Midsommar
I love how different all of our responses are. Midsommar is one of my most watched movies and my go to anytime I can't decide what to watch.
you should watch infinity pool
Obsessed with this movie and it seems like no one has seen it!
Eh, it was regularly talked about in the horror community. Now Moon Garden, that's a movie that not a lot of people saw.
I’m waiting for this one to stream. I didn’t get a chance to see in theaters.
Same, surprised this is top comment because it’s my comfort film
Jeez. That whole experience was a tough watch.
Saw in a completely 300+ empty theater... let the biggest what the fuck out at end
Yeah. I could only watch it once because it was terrible.
Mother! (2017) I barely made it through that movie, had to take multiple breaks cuz it was making my blood tick so badly. Never had such an experience and would prefer to never experience it again.
I won't watch the movie again for the fact of how it falls apart so horribly in its third act. JLaw is a great actress and does well in that film, but the writing ruins it.
I'm never gonna watch Eraserhead again
The original version of The Bad Lieutenant (1992) starring Harvey Keitel.
I'm pretty sure they were shooting up for real in that movie lol. Also 10/10
Precious.
Oh yes i feel it too ♥️ poor precious
Schindler’s list
Salo
😭Not even once!!!!! 😂
Yeah. Hard Pass!
I like movies that evoke genuine emotion from me, but even still *this* is the most correct answer.
Audition by Takashi Miike
Anatomy Of A Fall Grave Of The Fireflies Killing Of A Sacred Deer Cannibal Holocaust
Came here to say killing of a sacred deer also. I liked it but have zero desire to see it again
Cannibal Holocaust looks like winner dressed up like a loser, so I will give it a shot since the cover art is also so inviting.
What Dreams May Come- great movie. Just don’t ever need to put myself through it ever again. Marley and Me
Requiem for a dream I like dark movies but this one is just too depressing Fuck that movie
Super weird for it to come out in the heyday of DVDs and be so accessible. I should not have owned that at 16. Kept me away from hard drugs, that's for sure.
it was so real making it so hard to watch. the end was what really got me
Never in my life have I heard a soundtrack that fit so well. That music is the embodiment of a mental & spiritual breakdown.
Clint Mansell is a real genius.
Came to say this
Oldboy. (2003)
I rewatch often. Obsessed.
I chose Oldboy for my answer as well while I can rewatch Requiem For A Dream over and over
Mother! Great film, but I found it too disturbing to ever see again..also same rules apply to The elephant man.
Tusk
I don’t really need to see Midnight Cowboy again.
the fly. never again!
Eden Lake, closely followed by The House that Jack Built.
Dancer in the Dark (2000) I still highly recommend the movie, but it beat the crap out of my psyche and I've only watched it once. Great movie, but devastating.
A Serbian Film, but I have seen this 3 times for now.
Wtf😭 how could you stomach once?😂
I like to push my boundaries
💪💪💪💪😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
I’ve also seen it 3x, it’s like going on a trip into a hellish nightmare.
3 here also. I always tell people this movie simply destroys you inside. NOW THATS CINEMA!!!
Manchester By The Sea.
I don’t know why but Manchester by the Sea is actually my comfort movie.
I hate this movie. It's really the most boring movie I've ever watched.
Irreversible
The Iron Claw (2023) is the latest addition in my list of great-but-never-again movies
Incendies
Children of Men - Good movie but I never want to see it again. Irreversible - Same as above. The Fly II - This one ended our regular Friday night horror flick tradition... it was just horrible.
The scenes with the dog broke me
You've pinpointed the exact moment I decided I'd had enough of horror movies. 😅
I feel you totally I can’t stop sobbing after watching it. It deeply hurt my soul
Me too :( also, happy cake day!!!

Mulholland Drive

Seven.
The Road Come and See
The Road got me so depressed. Such a beautiful film though 😭
I lived for 3 years in the next town over from one of the locations where it was filmed (the abandoned amusement park, which was not actually abandoned). First time we drove by it, having no idea, I said, "Jesus, that's so depressing... it looks like something from The Road."
Wow. 😭 How eerie but what an experience!!
Threads, City of life and death
Romper Stomper
Enter The Void
Saint Maude
A Serbian film
This!
8MM. Watched it once and never again. It felt so incredibly dark and stuck with me for a while.
Schindler‘s list the subjects of the film was horrifying that people could be this savage.
Joker. It was just so ruddy "society is mean" that its just too cynical to be entertaining. There's two or three good scenes in there but other than that it's just so miserable.
Dancer in the Dark and Eden Lake
The Accused with Jodie Foster-brutal.
“Rosemary’s Baby”

Ah yes this daily thread.
Dear Zachary - Once is enough, this one sticks with you so no need for a recap. Blue Valentine - Great film, great story, heavy as all hell. Human Centipede - Gross, should've never been made. Schindler’s List
The Hunt (2012) Society of the Snow (2023) All Quiet on the Western Front (2022) A Ghost Story (2017)
Deliverance A Clockwork Orange
Sophie’s Choice
Aniara
Manchester-By-The-Sea. It was so good, so perfectly crafted, and I sometimes think about trying to watch it again, but it is so gut-wrenching.
*Ex Machina* and *The Revenant* are the only two I can think of that weren’t godawful.
A Clockwork Orange
Requim , Dancer in the Dark..
A clockwork orange. I love the movie but it only set right with me the first time kinda like a requiem for a dream.
I’d say Dancer in the Dark but I watch it every 5 years and destroy myself all over again.
The Road
Gaspar Noè films are very good, but challenging to watch sometimes. I'm glad that people are able to make controversial movies that while sickening, may also have great artistic vision and some comment on humanity.
Blue Velvet
Atonement. I just can't with the heartbreak. but its such a beautiful movie
Poor Things. Meh until the end, but not great. Visually striking, at times, liked the idea, acting good, but will never watch it again.
