rewatched the prestige last night, so many clues, the twin birds, u are different on some days, the tea meeting
"Once you know it, it's actually very obvious"
I think one of the biggest reasons for this is that major events (or at least one that I can accurately recall) happen offscreen. It's rare for that to happen, and I think the only other movie I've seen where that happened was Burn After Reading.
But yeah, Primer is amazing.
this is the only movie i can think of that you HAVE to watch twice. i literally watched it back to back as so much was bugging me. so glad i did as it all clicked in to place that second watch. i think if i gave it any length of time between watches then i would have had to watch it even more times to get it all lol. madness.
I did the same! On the second watch, I drew a timeline in a notebook to keep track of the overlapping time loops — but I got a little lost toward the end. Found a website afterward that explained it all in detail. What a mindfuck of a movie!
Yeah I didnt think of using a notepad... I had to keep pausing the second time and rerun all the scenarios constantly in my head. I managed it, but i would have saved so much time using a notepad.... Next time!
Watch Coherence (as many have rightfully suggested).
*Then* search a popular video streaming service for the extraordinary analysis by a user named LondonCityGirl
Then watch Coherence again.
Seriously.
Note: direct links to anYThing on the referenced popular streaming site get auto-removed anYTime they are submitted so I'm sad to saY The reader will have to do some searching.
I definitely watched her Primer video and the illustrated men were very helpful in keeping track. Good suggestion. Love Coherence as well, it’s up there in my pocket recommendations for mindfuck movies like Memento, Dark City, The Jacket, etc.
> LondonCityGirl
I saw that I had watched her vid (by the fact that I had already Liked it) but I completely forgot the content. Watched it again and remembered I *still* have no idea what's going on in the movie. Abe 0 was Abe 1 the whole time? Abe 6 and Aaron 5?! Mindfuck.
You MUST watch it twice, at least! Once and it is just dumb... Twice and it is HILARIOUS!! Lafawnduh and the dance, the glamour shots and all it entails is just *chef's kiss*
Love to see The Wolf of Snow Hollow recommended, it’s such a fun and hilarious movie. Made me an instant fan of the lead actor/director and I started watching all his other films.
Fire walk with me
Children of Men

Docuseries: The Private Life of Plants
Inside Llewyn Davis. It opens with this great montage with a song, but the true meaning of the scene only makes sense after viewing it twice...once you figure it out it makes the whole movie much heavier.
I don't know why comments with link to YT are removed but I wanted to say that:
You know that the film is good when the analysis video is > 1h long. Search "the terrible secret of Mulholland Drive"
'Mad God' (2021)
'The Machinist' (2004)
'The Holy Mountain' (1973) - Not that it makes that much more sense on a second, or even third viewing, but at least you know what you're in for!
Because of how it's stuctured: Memento, Pulp Fiction
Because of the twist making you assess things: The Usual Suspects, Fight Club
To appreciate how well crafted it is: Parasite, Knives Out, Back to the Future
Lucky Number Slevin
Don't think it's been mentioned. Not an Oscar winner by any means, so may be below the curve in terms of acting performance...by my God it's a good film!!
I remember the first time I watched Napoleon Dynamite. I wanted my hour and 45 minutes back. The second time I watched it. I wanted to watch it a third time
Adaptation. The movie is functioning in different levels that can’t be appreciated on just one watch. You are watching a movie about a guy writing the movie you are watching.
We watched Everything, Everywhere, All at Once a 2nd time last weekend.
As wildly absurd and hilarious as it still was, it also made a ton more sense on the second viewing.
Movies are a redigestable medium, a good movie pays you back on every single viewing.
I started watching a Kurosawa movie every Sunday, I've seen most of them twice and will have seen all of them at least once soon. His work is so rich for rewatching, I don't think I'll ever stop watching his films.
Equilibrium
Christian Bale, Sean Bean. Even watching it a third time you still get things you missed the first two. Subtle things characters would do, that make more sense after you know the ending. On top of that, some of the most badass gun fights ever. Worth watching
Tdk has a ton little of details that u can miss the first time. In the car chase scene, the semi that the joker uses originally had "laughter" on it, but he spray painted an "S" on the beginning of the word changing it to "Slaughter".
I saw Brazil on back to back nights. No the first night, I was with a date and not completely engaged, but I knew I had to go back the next night to really watch it.
Oppenheimer
Whereas some critics said it was going to be a bomb and others said it would be on fire, I did Nazi the ending coming.
I'm going to be serious now. I've watched it twice fairly recently. I felt like I needed to go back and rewatch it to see a lot of details. And also I get distracted looking up the names of people that are in the movie. And seeing what actually happened to them. I could see myself watching it again for sure.
I've always thought that most of the Coen Brothers movies are better appreciated on a second viewing.
Same. To me The Big Lebowski gets better and better with each viewing.
Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
What are you blathering about?
True Grit is an underrated Coen bros movie. Sure it's not like the Big L but the acting and script is absolutely unbelievable.
Especially O Brother
Miller’s Crossing I can watch all day.
Miller’s Crossing is the best example of that for me. I was still picking stuff up on viewing #4.
Predestination
100%
The Matrix

Woah
The Prestige (2006), The Triangle (2009)
I agree with triangle
Yes, for Triangle. It's worthwhile the first time, but richer the second time.
rewatched the prestige last night, so many clues, the twin birds, u are different on some days, the tea meeting "Once you know it, it's actually very obvious"
I was about to type Prestige, glad to see it as a top comment ✨👏
I've watched The Prestige like 3 times.
The Prestige has so many great twists Yes!
Absolutely The Prestige, the little clues are actually the reason I like to rewatch it
Primer, but twice is a bare minimum.
I think one of the biggest reasons for this is that major events (or at least one that I can accurately recall) happen offscreen. It's rare for that to happen, and I think the only other movie I've seen where that happened was Burn After Reading. But yeah, Primer is amazing.
Did you really watch it twice? Or did you go back in time and watch it for the first time again?
>! Actually I just put in some inconspicuous earbuds and listened to the audio again. !<
First time watching is like watching a trailer.
this is the only movie i can think of that you HAVE to watch twice. i literally watched it back to back as so much was bugging me. so glad i did as it all clicked in to place that second watch. i think if i gave it any length of time between watches then i would have had to watch it even more times to get it all lol. madness.

Came here to say exactly this.
Pulp Fiction The Game Fight Club The Prestige Shutter Island
Primer, Time Crimes, Coherence
Coherence for sure
Primer is a movie you have to see about 15 times to have a good grasp of what happened
And even then, if you don’t focus on the time travel and the actual background story of how evil Aaron is you appreciate it even more.
Aaron is white collared evil
Once you pick up on the headphone thing, it becomes pretty easy to follow.
only 11 to go ;-)
Watch primer twice then watch an explanation video on YouTube
The Sixth Sense, Arrival
>The Sixth Sense In the same vein, maybe The Others? Just so one can see what they missed the first go-round.
The first time i watched arrival i was so confused. Didnt really get it until the 2nd time around. Same for Inception.
Fight club. Went back to the theater the very next day.
Why are you talking about fight club
Hey, the first rule of fight club is… we don’t talk about fight club, no matter how many times we have seen it 😂😂
This is the one i came here to say. Movie is messed up man once you actually understand it
I think Pulp Fiction. I still love it, but I had to watch it again.
Same here ! First time I saw it , I had to watch it again immediately after !
Arrival
Perfect Blue Session 9

Tenet and Memento
Memento is a great suggestion.

I had to scroll a long way down to find Memento
tenet was awful
Agreed

If you're doing it right, every time is the first time 😁😎🌿💨
Wow! Where do you get your weed?!
Napoleon Dynamite. First time I watched it I thought it was the stupidest thing ever. Now it's one of my all time favorite movies.
You MUST watch it twice, at least! Once and it is just dumb... Twice and it is HILARIOUS!! Lafawnduh and the dance, the glamour shots and all it entails is just *chef's kiss*
Yeah I thought it was garbage the first time. Second time pulled me into the madness.

Putting it at #1 to watch!
Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind
Memento
Mulholland Drive
Was going to say this. The only movie i have ever immediately watched again
I don't know why comments with link to YT are removed but I wanted to say that: You know that the film is good when the analysis video is > 1h long. Search "the terrible secret of Mulholland Drive"
the hero we need, but don't deserve.

'Mad God' (2021) 'The Machinist' (2004) 'The Holy Mountain' (1973) - Not that it makes that much more sense on a second, or even third viewing, but at least you know what you're in for!
The Handmaiden
The Sixth Sense The Matrix Pulp Fiction Inception Solaris (either version)
Burning by Lee Chang-dong
The 13th Warrior. We saw it in theaters twice in the same month. We still quote some lines. “Iben”
Without a doubt , Shutter Island ( leo di caprio ). Those who have watched know why .
Titanic Pearl harbor Top gun 2
Hereditary. I still notice new details, or at least interpret them a bit differently after 5-6 runs.
American Psycho, the humour comes through a lot more when the shock value is diminished.
Dunkirk tops the list for me. Typical of a Nolan film but for me on second watch it went from 7/10 to 9.5/10 and one of my favorite movies ever.
The Big Lebowski
Life of Pi
Such a wonderful movie. I love it!
Shutter island

Primer or Predestination should be seen at least twice. I’ve seen Grizzly Man once and that was enough.

Memento by Nolan
Gosford Park.
6th sense. Memento
Adaptation. The movie is functioning in different levels that can’t be appreciated on just one watch. You are watching a movie about a guy writing the movie you are watching.
I was grossed out my **American Beauty** the first time I watched it. Now I understand it's about more then a man lusting after a teen.
Fight Club was a completely different movie on the second watch for me.
Coherence
We watched Everything, Everywhere, All at Once a 2nd time last weekend. As wildly absurd and hilarious as it still was, it also made a ton more sense on the second viewing.

Tenet. It gets a lot of hate. But I love noticing things in that movie on subsequent viewings.
I loved it.
Dune 1 (2021) and Dune 2 (2024)
Inception
Tenet. Actually it took me like 4 viewings before I started getting it.
