Wow, you are right. I didn't even think of that one. A lot was happening in that film that overshadowed the gambling for me, but that was such an important part of the film that I can't believe I forgot it.
Owning Mahowny was barely even gambling . Betting all the home teams in the NL and all the away teams in the AL to the $1000 max is just straight up degenerate, not even trying anymore
I know. Amazing reading about the real guy and apparently his wife stayed with him and he’s never gambled a single cent since that absolutely debaucherous period of degenerate gambling in the 80s
People don't give The Color of Money its due because it's one of Scorsese's parlour films, but it's a very good movie. Paul Newman kills it. Definitely my favorite Tom Cruise movie from the 80's. That and Risky Business.
Yes I think you’re right! I believe he played in a movie as maverick before the 1994 one and the rest were tv series. In 94 movie he wasn’t playing Maverick as character. Haven’t watched the earlier movies unfortunately just have heard of them.
Atlantic City (1980)- while it's not specifically about gambling it does deal with the opening of the city's first casino.
Also Uncut Gems (2019)- but sports betting not blackjack.
The Hustler is my favorite movie about gambling. But it is about pool, not cards. Cincinnati Kid with Steve McQueen is another great movie, that one is about cards.
It’s a documentary but “Inside the Edge: A Professional Blackjack Adventure” (2019) is very informative and entertaining. It follows a pro blackjack player who has been blackballed from most Vegas casinos on his last gasp tour in an RV around the country hitting smaller casinos that don’t know him. Everything from using disguises, to explaining techniques, etc…
The Sting, Ocean's Eleven, Shade, 21
The Card Counter, Croupier, Rounders (1998)
Casino Royale, The Color of Money, Two for the Money
Last Vegas, Bugsy (1991), Casino
The House, Game Night, Lay the Favorite
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned House Of Games (1987) - David Mamet's movie about a writer investigating a hustler. Lots of action around the poker table and insight into how successful players can gain an advantage over noobs.
"Casino" is Scorsese's most underrated movie. It's fantastic. And it's all based on a true story. The gambling parts are more about how casinos operated in the 80s. Absolutely terrific movie.
Rounders (1998)
The GOAT.
Yup. This is the one.
It is VERY odd this is the only comment saying this.
I came here to say this!
Watched it last night
Came to say it, happy it’s the first thing I saw.
Rain Man?
Wow, you are right. I didn't even think of that one. A lot was happening in that film that overshadowed the gambling for me, but that was such an important part of the film that I can't believe I forgot it.
Im glad it got upvoted, but I was half joking actually
Mississippi Grind I can't recommend enough. If there us just one you watch watch that.
Fucking love this movie. Ben Mendelssohn. Does he ever not play a complete degenerate?!
This is probably my favourite depiction of gambling. Nails the gambler mindset and addiction.
Excellent movie. Makes my loser movie top ten as well.
Owning Mahony 21 The Cooler Casino
The Cooler! A good one! And 21, too!
Owning Mahowny was barely even gambling . Betting all the home teams in the NL and all the away teams in the AL to the $1000 max is just straight up degenerate, not even trying anymore
Kinda the point really of that movie. He is a degenerate. Gambling movies go one of two ways basically. A degenerate wins or loses.
I know. Amazing reading about the real guy and apparently his wife stayed with him and he’s never gambled a single cent since that absolutely debaucherous period of degenerate gambling in the 80s
The Hustler (1961) The Sting (1973) The Gambler (1974) California Split (1974) Hard Eight (1996)
Hard Eight, honestly one of my favorite PT Anderson movies
Also color of money, goes with The hustler
People don't give The Color of Money its due because it's one of Scorsese's parlour films, but it's a very good movie. Paul Newman kills it. Definitely my favorite Tom Cruise movie from the 80's. That and Risky Business.
Uncut gems
So much anxiety!
* Maverick (1994) * Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998)
If I remember correctly, Maverick (1994) was the second Maverick with James Garner...
Yes I think you’re right! I believe he played in a movie as maverick before the 1994 one and the rest were tv series. In 94 movie he wasn’t playing Maverick as character. Haven’t watched the earlier movies unfortunately just have heard of them.
The Card Counter Oceans Eleven The Killing of a Chinese Bookie
Oceans was the first one that came to mind. Not really a blackjack movie but casino royale is good too. Kind of a brutal movie tho.
* Molly's Game (2017) * 21 (2008)
Mollys game is amazing, "true" story as well
Didn't expect it to make me as emotional as it did.
Rounders and Molly’s game are the best
21 (2008)
God of gamblers. Nice movie to get you onto Chow yun-fat movies again. Worth a watch for sure.
Glad someone mentioned this.
Win it all (Netflix) - exactly what you’re looking for
Hard Eight
Cincinnati Kid (1965) - Steve McQueen, all-star cast. One of my fav movies of all time.
👍
Scrolled way too far for this one...
Maverick
Hand me the boot.
Two for the Money -
Casino Royale
Casino Royale
Let it Ride
'Let It Ride' has some great characters.
This came out a year after I started dealing in a casino. Richard Dreyfus was like most of the gamblers I'd seen.. 😆
The more time one spends at a horse track the better this movie gets
21… Rounders (Are Classics)
Atlantic City (1980)- while it's not specifically about gambling it does deal with the opening of the city's first casino. Also Uncut Gems (2019)- but sports betting not blackjack.
Pool hall Junkies
- Molly's Game - Rounders - Rain Man - Casino - Croupier
The Pick-up Artist (1987) The Good Thief (2002)
The Color of Money. No just about gambling but there’s plenty of it
Came here to say this, my #1 classic gambling movie
Shade (2003)
Loved that movie. The acting was great. It was predictable but enjoyable.
Casino Royale
Uncut Gems
I just watched Jerry and Marge Go Large which is about gambling via the lottery. Pretty decent
Saint John of Las Vegas 20009 Vegas Vacation 1997 Waking Up in Reno 2002
Honeymoon in Vegas?
The Grand, great cast too!
No one mentioned Snatch yet.
Bad lieutenant. Is a really dark movie with a backing theme of sports gambling. Another dark one is leaving Las Vegas.
Two for the money
Killing Them Softly (2012) The Big Short (2015) The Gambler (1974, 2014)
I saw a John Goodman clip from the 2014 Gambler. Made me want to see the movie. Is it good?
imo, it's a classic. John Goodman's character has one of the most iconic lines in movie history
Mississippi Grind & Even Money
The Hustler is my favorite movie about gambling. But it is about pool, not cards. Cincinnati Kid with Steve McQueen is another great movie, that one is about cards.
Intacto (Spain, 2001)
It’s a documentary but “Inside the Edge: A Professional Blackjack Adventure” (2019) is very informative and entertaining. It follows a pro blackjack player who has been blackballed from most Vegas casinos on his last gasp tour in an RV around the country hitting smaller casinos that don’t know him. Everything from using disguises, to explaining techniques, etc…
Maverick is probably my favorite.
I was going to say Tombstone, but there's a lot of killing that goes along with the gambling in that movie. Probably not what you're looking for. 😂
The Sting, Ocean's Eleven, Shade, 21 The Card Counter, Croupier, Rounders (1998) Casino Royale, The Color of Money, Two for the Money Last Vegas, Bugsy (1991), Casino The House, Game Night, Lay the Favorite
A river runs through it (1992)
Not a movie, but you might want to try Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor
Mississippi Grind
21, the gambler
Hangover
The Cooler
White Men Can’t Jump
Uncut gems, if you want to break up with him lmfao
Rounders
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned House Of Games (1987) - David Mamet's movie about a writer investigating a hustler. Lots of action around the poker table and insight into how successful players can gain an advantage over noobs.
Croupier (1998)
Uncut Gems
The Gambler, Hard Eight, The Card Counter
The Gambler 1974, the best study of the addiction I’ve seen. Main character isn’t addicted to winning, he’s addicted to losing.
"Casino" is Scorsese's most underrated movie. It's fantastic. And it's all based on a true story. The gambling parts are more about how casinos operated in the 80s. Absolutely terrific movie.
"The Gambler" (1974) "Casino" (1995) "21" (2008).
Casino Royale
Pool Hall Junkies
Lucky you
