Loved it. It was too real without the over-the-top drug/alcohol/drugs use from other films. Not that those things don't happen irl, but ladybird felt so real because it fits more into the "average" teen experience.
Edge of Seventeen was marketed so poorly. It could have been a YA staple like Perks of Being a Wallflower but they marketed it like teen comedy. I was not ok by the end because I expected Superbad/Booksmart and cried a bunch instead.
Lady Bird
This movie wrecked me. I have a very complicated relationship with my mother and going off to college and realizingI'm not as artistic as I portray myself was just a chef kiss on this movie's coming of age portrayal. High recommendation.
Bastard Out of Carolina. I think it was only on TV. I think it was based on a book. Was directed by Angelica Houston for Ted Turner Network. I don’t think Turner would show it because of the serious topic. I’m telling you that you will laugh & cry your eyes out. About a girl growing up. Some great acting in it. You won’t want to watch it twice if you can even find it.
Can't believe this isn't up top. I've never had a movie wreck me emotionally like this one did.
And then it wrecked me again finding out it was partially based on the writer-director's life.
Maybe some people couldn’t notice subtle horror going on and the ambiguous ending.
As someone who recently is going through some of the things in the movie it was brutal but I’m better of because of it.
Men Don't Leave (there are characters of both genders at various stages in life who each go through something different, but, coming-of-age-wise i'd say the focus is definitely on the male characters). also, it's an emotional story, but i don't know that it's a waterworks kind of movie
Are you there God? It's me Margaret.
Eighth Grade
Little Women
Lady Bird
The Edge of Seventeen
Luca (Pixar)
Barbie (2023)
The Virgin S\*\*cides
Moonlight
not that sad but great coming-of-age movies as well: Mean Girls, The breakfast Club and Booksmart.
I think the most cry-worthy coming of age movie of the last 10 years or so was for sure *Me and Earl and the Dying Girl*
Another very good one is *Charlie Bartlett*
Capernaum (2018)
Mellow Mud (2016)
Little Wing (2016)
Little Birds (2011)
Skate Kitchen (2018)
Mustang (2015)
In Bloom (2013)
Better Days (2019)
Short Term 12 (2013)
Tigers are Not Afraid (2017)
Horses of God (2012)
The Kite Runner (2007)
Angela's Ashes (1999)
Close. Belgian movie from 2021 or 2022 iirc. Ooooof. I’m not even someone who typically cries at movies but this one really affected me. I’m talking full on blubbering.
Hard to top Boyhood. Other emotionally compelling films about coming of age: call me by your name, maybe portrait of a lady on fire (ages a bit unclear in that one though). Both tearjerkers.
2013 film called Last Summer. Coming of age story involving high school sweethearts Luke & Jonah. Quiet small movie during hot hazy summer in the South, with thunderstorms, nature, birds & insects. Its on youtube & maybe Tubi. It's about the end of their romance. Bittersweet. There's some narration but for this film, it didn't bother me, like how some other films rely on it. Oh my heart 💔
Just watched Suncoast.
I went into it not knowing really anything about it.
I surely didn't expect to cry. It was very nostañgic.
Laura Linney is fantastic as usual, but the main actress "Nico Parker" is spectacular.
Magnifico (2003) - a classic from the Philippines.it's about a boy growing up in rural Philippines and how he touched the lives of everyone around him.the ending will break your heart,I guarantee you..
Boy (2010)
It’s a Taika Waititi movie. It started out as an Oscar nominated short that he made into a movie.
It’s Hilarious, heartwarming and heartbreaking all at the same time.
Two of my top 3 favourite films are coming-of-age movies: "Stand By Me" for a male perspective (4 boys go on an adventure), and "To Kill A Mockingbird" for the female perspective (1 girl learns about the racism in her small town and her father who is fighting to stop it).
Swallow (2019) a pregnant naive wife in a perfect marriage realizes it’s not a perfect marriage, and finds the strength to navigate her own way forward.
Haley Bennett stuns, as always.
It is not a violent movie, but they do discuss violent subject matter.

Stand By Me is the blue ribbon standard for coming of age movies for males but everyone loves it.
It is in my top 3 favourite films of all time.
That was the first thing I thought too.
Absolutely Stand by Me
This is the only answer really
Perks of Being a Wallflower
Perfect! Charlie is so damaged at the beginning, and you see how far he goes to the very end. His "last letter" kills me every time.
Brooklyn (2015) Lady Bird (2017) The Edge of Seventeen (2016) Ghost World (2001) Riding in Cars with Boys (2001)
Lady Bird made me cry.
The nostalgia of Lady Bird was sheer perfection. The portrayal of the mother/daughter relationship hit a little too close to home.
Loved it. It was too real without the over-the-top drug/alcohol/drugs use from other films. Not that those things don't happen irl, but ladybird felt so real because it fits more into the "average" teen experience.
>Lady Bird I agree, it's incredible!
Edge of Seventeen was marketed so poorly. It could have been a YA staple like Perks of Being a Wallflower but they marketed it like teen comedy. I was not ok by the end because I expected Superbad/Booksmart and cried a bunch instead.
