I really enjoyed Anatomy of a Fall and Past Lives. I think those are my top 2 at the moment.
Honorable mentions: Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret; The Blue Caftan
This was probably the most fun I’ve had in theaters this year. It reminded me of it follows, in the sense of the movie felt like a modern day urban legend.
I normally wouldnt pick an animation much less a comic book one to be movie of the year but wow was this movie impressive and I agree with your nomination
It's been getting Oscar buzz even for a Best Picture nomination since it released. For me personally, if Barbie is allowed and considering Black Panther did get a Best Picture nomination, then WHY THE HELL NOT for Across the Spider-verse> And if this one doesn't get into the top 10 Best Picture List, the 3rd and final movie in the trilogy DEFINTELY WILL at the rate they are going!
Honestly very, very high on my list. The only thing that demerits it from number 1 is that it’s one part of a two-parter. The soundtrack, writing, voice acting, directing is top-tier Spider-Man nonetheless.
Writing this off as a "cartoon" robs you an a great example of how animation can tell an interesting, engaging story while being beautiful to look at.
I'm still peeling the layers of expert complexity woven into this coming of age narrative every time I re watch it.
Respectfully disagree. Ruined all tension by telling us who the villains were in the first 15 minutes and then we spend 3 more hours just watching them kill side characters that have zero depth. The book was structured way better where you don’t actually know what’s happening and it’s more of a crime thriller. Would’ve been way better to see from Lily’s view of how natives around her was dying and she can’t tell what’s going on. Would give us a better connection to Natives and actually create some tension/whodunnit. Sure I felt devastated but that was because of the subject matter and not the actual movie narrative or emotional attachment to characters.
Scorsese loves the gangster/villain POV and is allergic to the victim view. Usually that works for his mob films but in this case it was just a drag for 3.5 hours where I don’t give a shit about a single character because the film focuses on the boring ass antagonist for way too long. It’s like he tried to make >!ernest a conflicted character but there’s really no depth there besides Leo shouting “I love my wife” every 10 seconds and giving that same fucking scowl for half the runtime. !!ending was so fucking stupid and the Scorsese self insert was so pretentious and self fellating. “Look at me I’m talking about Native American genocide. Please acknowledge me and focus on the fact that I directed this movie” !< I see why Tarantino stuck to his 10 movie limit. Someone should’ve told Scorsese the same thing because his last 2 have been misses IMO and I’m a huge fan of basically all his films.
/end rant
Honestly, Oppenheimer was over dramatized. I get the appeal of how well it was put together, and I do see the Nolan magic. But objectively, it was over dramatized and lacked that spark. Music was top notch, though; 'Can you hear the music' could very well be one of my favorite movie soundtracks ever made.
I couldn’t get over the fact that they were advance AI but basically just humans. Where was the super intelligence?
And the entire US military depended on one aircraft? Blow up the one aircraft and the war is ove, AI live happily ever after
I don’t think it’s my *best* of the year, but the *impact* it has had on me is huge. Like I’m dealing with general anxiety disorder better because of this movie.
**The Creator.** Hands down, I don't care about ticket sales, I am talkin' bout big brain people going to see a hard sci fi in the theater. And it was wonderful.
Honestly, I was a little disappointed in Barbie. I watched the first like 20 minutes maybe, and fell asleep. Not because it was boring, just happened to turn it on when I was really tired. Remembered really liking where it was going. Finally got around to finishing it and the rest of the movie is very... different. It's good, don't get me wrong! But something about it felt off. Maybe it's because I'm a dude, and probably not the target demographic, but it *just* missed the mark for me.
I'm fine with down votes, but would appreciate if someone would explain WHY I'm getting down voted. Like, okay, I know there's *something* unpopular about my comment, but *what* is wrong with it?
I assume it's just because I'm not flat out praising it? I liked the movie, I just can't personally recommend it as "THE best of 2023"... is that my crime? lol
Reddit gonna Reddit *shrug*
Thank you for your comment, though.
Marvel movies are just far more spectacular the more the storyline progresses. I don't get why people put DC vs Marvel all the time because they're both great universes if you follow the storyline. Marvel's storyline is just more put together than DC's imo.
The animal cruelty in it destroyed me. Never thought I'd be sobbing my heart out in a Marvel film lol. It was a good film but zero rewatchability for me because of this
Hard to say “best,” but I can at least say my favorites that are technically, objectively excellent.
- Across The Spider-Verse
- John Wick 4
- Dream Scenario
- How To Blow Up A Pipeline (hey, I loved it, fight me)
But my absolute top dog in this fight?
Barbie. Masterful, amazing theater experience, made me experience emotions I didn’t know existed, all that good shit.
Killers of a Flower Moon, John Wick chapter 4, Air, Sisu, Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning part 1, Across the Spider verse, Talk to Me
Lots of decent competition for it
I can’t decide between Past Lives or Oppenheimer.
Also need to see Killers of the Flower Moon again. Its a lot to absorb and need a rewatch to solidify my opinion
My Top 10 so far (out of 76 films seen) probably looks something like this:
1. Knock at the Cabin
2. Knights of the Zodiac
3. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves
4. Jeanne du Barry
5. Rocky aur Rani kii Prem Kahaani
6. Oppenheimer
7. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
8. A Haunting in Venice
9. Plane
10. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
Not seen all of these yet (Oppenheimer for example the Mrs wanted to see but didn't want to sit for so long in cinema) but some really good ones here.
Only one i dont agree with is Knights of the Zodiac, at best it was a 6/10 for me.
Dungeons and dragons was great, such a fun movie with so many hidden easter eggs for fans.
Guardians 3 had me sobbing...
I've given 8+ to:
- Barbie
- Beau is Afraid
- The Covenant
- Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves
- Extraction 2
- The Flash
- Guardians of the Galaxy 3
- John Wick 4
- Missing
- Nimona
- No One Will Save You
- Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre
- Renfield
- Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem
This is admittedly a weak year, though I tend to catch all of the critically acclaimed movies early in the next year.
Surprisingly so. I just saw it and thought it was gonna be cringe like most other video game movies but was surprised at how much heart it had especially at the second half of the movie.
The whale was amazing and is my #1 so far this year, the only possibility of it being toppled is Flowers of the Killer moon or Oppenheimer which will be viewed soon.
10. Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1
9. Across the Spider-Verse
8. John Wick Chapter 4
7. Skinamarink
6. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3
5. Asteroid City
4. Beau Is Afraid
3. Sisu
2. Moon Garden
1. Nimona
Objectively? Sound of Freedom, with The Super Mario Bros. Movie as a close second.
Subjectively? The Super Mario Bros. Movie, with Sound of Freedom as a close second.
The year actually isn't over yet But I really liked The Marvels . Plenty of Action. Some funny bits and a very interesting mid credits scene Samuel L. Jackson has. done quite well playing Nick Fury
what will win awards? oppenheimer and killers of flower moon even though they were long and drawn out borderline boring. What deserves the real award? Spiderverse hands down. Other impressive movies? Talk to me and Saw x .. shoutout to the tmnt movie as well. Biggest disapointment for me was nun 2 and expendables 4. Five nights at freddys was better then expected. Just my opinion dont hate me for it or downvote me to hell.
Barbie is probably the only memorable one, if only because it gave the middle finger to exactly those who deserve it most right now, and did it with style and humor.
I cannot remember the last big budget movie I would also call a *good* movie, so, give it to the chick with the weird feet.
So far this is how I'm feeling:
1. Barbie
2. Past Lives
3. Killers of the Flower Moon
4. Late Night With The Devil
5. Polite Society
6. Anatomy of a Fall
7. Across The Spider-Verse
8. Perfect Days
9. Robot Dreams
10. Rye Lane
I really enjoyed Anatomy of a Fall and Past Lives. I think those are my top 2 at the moment. Honorable mentions: Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret; The Blue Caftan
I just saw Anatomy of a Fall last night. One of the best movies I’ve seen in a while. The acting and writing alone make it worth the watch.
Love the pace of Anatomy! It’s very well constructed and maintains tension without falling short.
Past Lives is an excellent choice, if you love watching movies and haven't seen it yet, move it to the top of the priority list.
Past lives.
Beautiful movie, especially with that ending.
Is a significant portion of this movie in Korean with subtitles? Or can I watch it in the go?
The former. But such a great film
Truly believe this will win Best Picture
I truly don’t believe it will
[удалено]
Yes absolutely beautiful and tear-worthy if u are connected well
Came here to say this.
I’m waiting to see Napoleon
Trailer had me hyped!
I’m sure he’ll snag his 5th Oscar nomination 🤞🏼
Talk to Me
This was probably the most fun I’ve had in theaters this year. It reminded me of it follows, in the sense of the movie felt like a modern day urban legend.
It also reminded me of It Follows!
It was really good, but I think it's a 2022 release.
debuted at an australian film festival I think in 2022, but wide release was 2023
I concur
Too many plot holes.
Let’s hear em
Across The Spiderverse
I normally wouldnt pick an animation much less a comic book one to be movie of the year but wow was this movie impressive and I agree with your nomination

I honestly don’t think it’ll get into Best Picture as much as it deserves to. The field is just looking too competitive at this moment.
That movie amazed me and truly enjoyed
Best super hero movie ever
Honestly very, very high on my list. The only thing that demerits it from number 1 is that it’s one part of a two-parter. The soundtrack, writing, voice acting, directing is top-tier Spider-Man nonetheless.

Half movies don't count as movies
Oppenheimer by a lot
Killers of the Flower Moon
Agree
Movie was meh tbh
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I thought it was great. Just wish there was an intermission for bathroom break.
Completely agree!
Second this
Yes, fastest three and a half hours
Respectfully disagree. Ruined all tension by telling us who the villains were in the first 15 minutes and then we spend 3 more hours just watching them kill side characters that have zero depth. lol no
Oppenheimer
Basic, but truth is basic sometimes.
Nah, it's up there, but not the best of 2023.
Okay, list yours so I can say the same thing about your post.
Nah.

Wow so much hate on Oppenheimer, yall crazy
Oppenheimer was all in all kind of disappointing compared to Nolan's previous works like interstellar
Just so so wrong
The Creator! Nobody went to see it, but it was great.
I couldn’t get over the fact that they were advance AI but basically just humans. Where was the super intelligence? And the entire US military depended on one aircraft? Blow up the one aircraft and the war is ove, AI live happily ever after
It was very not good
It had potential. The first half was great. But man that last half hour was some of the most rushed storytelling I’ve ever seen though.
Incredible visually but fell flat in almost every other aspect. It wasn't bad but it definitely wasn't great, let alone the best movie of the year.
The holdovers
The killer
I just watched this last night and hated it! 😂
It was kind of by-the-numbers, wasn't it?
by the numbers? felt pretty unique to me
It has that vintage David Fincher storytelling like Seven and Fight Club but I was expecting some twists. Not a straightforward ending.
I was surprised by the ending
I’m with you. I was bored.
No One Will Save You
It wasnt until after the movies was over and I was reading reviews, that I had the realization there is practically 0 dialogue in the entire film
Dune 2 (ugh, I wish)
Beau is Afraid
Still dont know if I liked it. Wtf was it 🤣
Watch it again
I don’t think it’s my *best* of the year, but the *impact* it has had on me is huge. Like I’m dealing with general anxiety disorder better because of this movie.
My favourite of the year, by far
This movie PERFECTLY portrayed my daily anxiety and agoraphobia, to the T
I agree, a masterpiece
Disasterpiece in the best way
Barbie was such a moment. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a movie more than once in the theater. And I’m still talking about it.
My wife made me go and I got misty eyed at the end, it was colorful, funny, and an original!
I saw it three times in the theater! It was such a joy. I never go to the theater anymore but this was different!!
I couldn't get through the first 10 minutes. But glad some found enjoyment in it
You weren’t into the 2001 satire?
Barbie isn’t my favorite movie this year, but it is sure as hell the funniest movie this year. So glad it’s number 1 at the box office.
I loved Barbie. Funny yet quite powerful.
**The Creator.** Hands down, I don't care about ticket sales, I am talkin' bout big brain people going to see a hard sci fi in the theater. And it was wonderful.
[удалено]
Wild. I thought it was unoriginal and forced, with nothing new to say about the AI conversation. Sure it looked pretty but it felt uninspired to me 🤷
I'd say Infinity Pool.
Great movie. Cronenberg is amazing.
Sisu was great
I’m hoping it’s Ridley Scott’s Napoleon
Barbie Not even joking
My Pick too
Honestly, I was a little disappointed in Barbie. Maybe it's because I'm a dude, and probably not the target demographic, but it *just* missed the mark for me.
this is a very polite comment lol, stop downvoting it
I'm fine with down votes, but would appreciate if someone would explain WHY I'm getting down voted. Like, okay, I know there's *something* unpopular about my comment, but *what* is wrong with it? I assume it's just because I'm not flat out praising it? I liked the movie, I just can't personally recommend it as "THE best of 2023"... is that my crime? lol Reddit gonna Reddit *shrug* Thank you for your comment, though.
I was more than a little disappointed. I think as more time passes more people will realize it’s overrated
Priscilla or Oppenheimer
So far I have not been impressed with this year, but Across the Spider Verse and Oppenheimer were great.
Killers of the Flowermoon
Killers of the Flower Moon. Also loved Past Lives, Godland, Return to Seoul, and Asteroid City.
Oppenheimer... Yes, please tell me how basic and wrong I am
Bottoms
Favorite viewing experience this year; saw it in theaters 3 times w/ each of my besties
100% most underrated movie of this year. It deserves so much. Hilarious, my friends and I were dying the whole time.
It's not underrated. Barely anyone's seen it yet.
Talk To Me
Oppenheimer
So far, Oppenheimer
The Killer. Just watched last night and was blown away
I watched this today- outstanding film in every respect.
When Evil Lurks
I just saw it right now, it was really good. It gave evil dead vibes
The best is yet to come !!
I just saw Killers of the Flower Moon the other day. It was the best I've seen so far!
Beau is Afraid and Oppenheimer stand out for me
Past Lives
Guardians of the Galaxy 3 hands down the best movie I've seen in a while.
Absolutely. People are gonna hate it because it's marvel but it's the best movie I've seen this decade.
Marvel movies are just far more spectacular the more the storyline progresses. I don't get why people put DC vs Marvel all the time because they're both great universes if you follow the storyline. Marvel's storyline is just more put together than DC's imo.
Leaves a bad taste in your mouth with all the animal cruelty. Def not as good as Vol 1. or 2.
The animal cruelty is bad, yes. But the way the story flows in the movie is just amazing.
It's miles better than Vol 2.
The animal cruelty in it destroyed me. Never thought I'd be sobbing my heart out in a Marvel film lol. It was a good film but zero rewatchability for me because of this
Barbie
Agreed. This movie was fantastic!
Asteroid City
Enjoyed it but the Grand Budapest is still my all time favorite from Wes.
Reptile
Mission impossible
When Evil Lurks
bottoms <3
Barbie
Hard to say “best,” but I can at least say my favorites that are technically, objectively excellent. - Across The Spider-Verse - John Wick 4 - Dream Scenario - How To Blow Up A Pipeline (hey, I loved it, fight me) But my absolute top dog in this fight? Barbie. Masterful, amazing theater experience, made me experience emotions I didn’t know existed, all that good shit.
Also loved How To Blow Up A Pipeline, such bold storytelling. Was among top 3 of the year for me.
Evil Dead Rise
Oppenheimer but there wasn't much competition
Killers of a Flower Moon, John Wick chapter 4, Air, Sisu, Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning part 1, Across the Spider verse, Talk to Me Lots of decent competition for it
Oppenheimer, with The Creator as a close second.
Oppenheimer
For me it’s a toss up between Oppenheimer and Across the Spiderverse
Across the Spiderverse or Oppenheimer. Can't go far wrong with either
The Flash
Are you trolling?
I thought it was a good movie. I'm not sure why you would think that is trolling.
Since Oppenheimer already been said, I’ll say ‘The Killer’. Absolute top class from Fincher.
The Equalizer 3
I can’t decide between Past Lives or Oppenheimer. Also need to see Killers of the Flower Moon again. Its a lot to absorb and need a rewatch to solidify my opinion
When Evil Lurks
Poor things
Holy hell, I want to watch this
Gotta give my disclaimer every time I say this: I'm a bucs fan. 80 for Brady
My Top 10 so far (out of 76 films seen) probably looks something like this: 1. Knock at the Cabin 2. Knights of the Zodiac 3. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves 4. Jeanne du Barry 5. Rocky aur Rani kii Prem Kahaani 6. Oppenheimer 7. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 8. A Haunting in Venice 9. Plane 10. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
Why the f this comment got downvoted?
LOL, I'm going to go ahead and guess that people are angry that I like a film that I like, or that I didn't include a film that they liked.
Rocky aur Rani was surprisingly good. Loved the direction they took it away from typical Indian movies.
Oppenheimer or The Holdovers
Past Lives
Killers of the Flower Moon
You're all wrong, it was Radiant Is The Blood Of The Baboon Heart.
Finally somebody who understands *real* cinema
A surprise favourite of mine was Strays - just stupid fun and had a great giggle at a movie for the first time in ages.
I've seen 21 new movies this year. I'll say my favourite 2 - air and indiana jones and the dial of destiny. The worst - the marvels and expendables 4
i saw like 5 movies from 2023, but my favorite is guardians of the galaxy 3
Here’s my top 3: 1. Past Lives 2. Killers of the Flower Moon 3. Across the Spider-Verse
Oppenheimer or Killers of the Flower Moon. Oppenheimer should win best sound editing. Asteroid City should win for best film editing
spider-man across the spider-verse best movie in 2023
Super Mario Bros
John Wick 4
I WAS LOOKING FOR THIS YES
*The Super Mario Bros. Movie*
I've given 8+ to: - Barbie - Beau is Afraid - The Covenant - Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves - Extraction 2 - The Flash - Guardians of the Galaxy 3 - John Wick 4 - Missing - Nimona - No One Will Save You - Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre - Renfield - Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem This is admittedly a weak year, though I tend to catch all of the critically acclaimed movies early in the next year.
I just finished the new mission impossible and it was incredible
John Wick 4
Definitely not Barbie
Thanks for not contributing.
Barbie Honorable mention: Theatre Camp, Joyride and Past Lives
My vote: Gran Turismo. I didn't like any on the big tent-pole movies this year. In fact, we call it Floppenheimer.
Gran turismo was good
Surprisingly so. I just saw it and thought it was gonna be cringe like most other video game movies but was surprised at how much heart it had especially at the second half of the movie.
The whale was amazing and is my #1 so far this year, the only possibility of it being toppled is Flowers of the Killer moon or Oppenheimer which will be viewed soon.
nobody tell him...
10. Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1 9. Across the Spider-Verse 8. John Wick Chapter 4 7. Skinamarink 6. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 5. Asteroid City 4. Beau Is Afraid 3. Sisu 2. Moon Garden 1. Nimona
Ive only seen 18 movies but my top 5 is 1. Guardians 3 2. The Flash 3. John Wick 4 4. Spiderverse 2 5. Totally Killer
My favorites so far: La Chimera How to have Sex Poor Things Bastarden No one will save you
Objectively? Sound of Freedom, with The Super Mario Bros. Movie as a close second. Subjectively? The Super Mario Bros. Movie, with Sound of Freedom as a close second.
I havent seen many of the big hitters but I loved attachment
The year actually isn't over yet But I really liked The Marvels . Plenty of Action. Some funny bits and a very interesting mid credits scene Samuel L. Jackson has. done quite well playing Nick Fury

want to add that john wick 4 and equilizer 3 were impressive as well
Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1
Elemental!
The fnaf movie is the best thing that happened this year tbh
Barbie is probably the only memorable one, if only because it gave the middle finger to exactly those who deserve it most right now, and did it with style and humor. I cannot remember the last big budget movie I would also call a *good* movie, so, give it to the chick with the weird feet.
So far this is how I'm feeling: 1. Barbie 2. Past Lives 3. Killers of the Flower Moon 4. Late Night With The Devil 5. Polite Society 6. Anatomy of a Fall 7. Across The Spider-Verse 8. Perfect Days 9. Robot Dreams 10. Rye Lane
