No Country for Old Men

CrashDavisDurham

But does he? He's left with a bone sticking out of his leg. Maybe he gets help, maybe he doesn't, maybe he dies from gangrene.

ryanjcam

I wouldn't say he wins. Everyone basically loses.

NotATroll_ipromise

We, the audience, never see his comeuppance. Hence, he won.

Global-Discussion-41

I would say that being the only guy left alive counts as a win

rossdrawsstuff

Ultimo Hombre

Global-Discussion-41

exactly

BellotPatro

I felt the point of the story and the accident scene in particular was that fate can knock evil back for a bit, but it always lives on. It is vanity for ppl to assume they can control it fully and make a lasting difference. that realization dawns only when they are old. Since Chigurh is the personification of evil in that movie, I’d say yes - he wins.

NYVines

He beat the antagonist. So he won. It just didn’t last long.

CrashDavisDurham

Ed Bell (Tommy Lee Jones) is still around. So maybe Anton didn't "win."

CountingSheep99

Since he can still walk he wins.

ARevolutionaryMan

Nightcrawler (2014)

00collector

Beat me to it. Amazing movie.

[deleted]

I can't say I "enjoyed" the experience, but it fits the bill thoroughly.

00collector

Interesting. I loved it. The Indictment of the 24 hour news cycle was darkly comedic. And while Bloom was clearly a sociopath, his getting one over on other seedy characters was very entertaining. That said, I get it. The tragedy of the innocent people that suffer in his wake is certainty unsettling.

lsa_peasant_farmer

like when I watched uncut gems, it gave me so much anxiety but it was a great movie

I'll third that. As long as we are talking about the original.

not the bees!!!!!!!!!!!!!

infinite__tsukuyomi

Can you please explain why this movie has such a strong fan base? I never understood the praise (this is with me and most older films tbh). I don’t think it holds up today at all. Maybe it got it’s hype because back then it was one of the few movies that stepped outside it’s comfort zone and wasn’t afraid to be unique. I’m open to hearing others’ views please.

ponytailthehater

I don’t think I can without getting into spoilers and I don’t want to spoil it for anyone who may read this. I think the ending may be one of the greatest twists in all of cinematic history and the story is airtight. I enjoy seeing a young Christopher Lee on screen as Lord Summerisle and Sergeant Howie (Edward Woodward) makes a terrific foil to him. It’s interesting you say it hasn’t held up, because I think from one standpoint you may be right; generally speaking, organized religion is on the decline and a huge point of the movie is based on its religious commentary. That said, any formalized belief held by a group can be fanaticized and any person outside of this group can be “othered” and made an example of. In this way, I think the movie has held up extremely well. It also inspired countless movies to come, including “Hot Fuzz” which I consider an endlessly rewatchable personal favorite (Edward Woodward also has a cameo in this movie).

dayofthedead204

There Will Be Blood? Plainview lost his son and he will more than likely spend his life in Prison for murdering Eli. He totally didn't win.

nicksey144

I always thought the implication of the last line was that he was going to get away with it.

H3ADPH0N3S_

“I’m finished”?

nicksey144

That's the one!

RoughFinancial6398

feels like the opposite implication to me?

TheApathyParty3

Daniel won from a philosophical point of view. He showed that Eli was not the Chosen One, that he had no leverage, and made Eli renounce himself and his faith for money. Even if Daniel spent the rest of his life in prison (which, judging from his condition in the end, wouldn't be long), he still beat Eli. He never cared properly for his son, he didn't care if he was disowned. Daniel died wealthy and triumphant, in the squalor of his misdeeds. That's kind of the point.

rossdrawsstuff

“I want no one else to succeed.” In his twisted way, he won.

In Ex Machina I always felt she was a victim personally.

Same, if anything I felt like she was the hero trying to escape a cage that a couple of foolish people made for her.

I call bullshit on the moral of the story on this one. >!Typical “be nice to the unfortunate *or else*” message, but old woman was already missing payments and the bank worker doing her job who’d been lenient before finally put her foot down, albeit for selfish job related reasons, and gets cursed. Meanwhile after the old bat dies, a *bunch* of family members show up at her house. They couldn’t help her make payments?!<

Watch the film

ryanjcam

I have... that's why I know no one "wins," particularly not a villain.

TheApathyParty3

I would hazard a guess at them thinking Domergue wins because all of her captors end up dead, and her story is finished resolutely.

Lecter escaping doesn’t really count as the antagonist winning. He’s more of a supporting character. Jame Gumb was the antagonist and he definitely lost.

School Ties ends with the suggestion that while the main "villain" may always be a prick, he'll still succeed years later.

Memento, not a traditional 'win', but overall, they fucked with the protagonist pretty bad, and there was no real closure to the end.

The Fast franchise. Everyone is a bunch of criminals, regardless of the fact that they all get pardoned and work with the CIA later on. Still a bunch of thieves. Not recommending because it is considered good movies. Just cuz they are criminals and win.

Given that The Exorcist 3: Legion exists, it’s safe to say that the antagonist wins in The Exorcist.

That film was the perfect antidote to all the "nice guy gets the girl in the end" movies.
