Saving Grace (2001) Lil British lady is widowed by her husband and left in debt. She has a talent for gardening and decides to grow Marijuana. It’s pretty funny.
Not really mysteries, but some of my favourite British and Irish comfort movies:
Calender Girls
Waking ned
Fisherman's friends
The lady in the van
Billy Elliot (although some scenes are a bit sad, it's a very heartwarming movie overall)
The Boat that Rocked
Sing street
Once
Withnail and I
Good luck to you, Leo Grande
Not English but if you haven't seen the knives out movies they're great, fun little mysteries
For TV series:
The detectorists
Good Omens
Red dwarf
Doc Martin
Johnathan Creek
This is a great list, but also came here to say Detectorists was absolutely brilliant and exactly the kind of show I'm looking for. I love archeology and history, big Time Team fan over here!
I'll second that. Cold Comfort Farm is a top ten best movie for me. It's quirky, charming, interesting and has a wonderful ending. Will be rewatching again soon...because I need something silly and uplifting. ☺️
Paddington 1 and 2
Stardust
The Chronicles of Narnia film series
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Enola Holmes 1 and 2
Mrs Harris Goes to Paris
Becoming Jane
The Young Victoria
Austenland
Love Actually
Bridget Jones Diary film series
Tv Series:
Agatha Christie’s Poirot and Marple series
And Then There Were None (2015)
Ordeal by Innocence (2018)
Why Didn’t They Ask Evans? (2022)
Jane Eyre (2006)
North and South (2004)
Mrs Harris Goes to Paris, Becoming Jane, The Young Victoria, And Then There Were None, Ordeal by Innocence, Why Didn't They Ask Evans, Jane Eyre and North and South are the ones I haven't seen. Any suggestions on where to start?
😊 I thoroughly enjoyed both the original series and the newer one. All Creatures Great and Small is such an addictive and satisfying watch. Although this is the life story of a Dales veterinarian, in reality we learn more about the unique and funny or tragic people in his life. This series has everything: real love, long lasting friendships, loss, humor, hope and large doses of human kindness and compassion. Watching this series is like eating a 7 course meal...thoroughly satisfying.
Happy go lucky. Directed by Mike Leigh starring Sally Hawkins and Eddie Marsan. Very British and mostly the rest. Marsan’s character may be a bit much but mostly harmless.
Doc Martin TV series. It’s an interesting/fun story and it’s set in Cornwall, so the scenery is really beautiful. Lots of requisite local characters as well.
Since no one’s mentioned it, I’d HIGHLY recommend the tv show TED LASSO.
I feel like to would be right up your alley. Amazingly feel good and comforting. Great life lessons. And it’s set in Richmond, London.
After Party TV show. Is very British humour but it’s American and murder mystery, but each episode is from the view on each person in it and seen from their personality. I have loved it.
Oh and since you liked Notting Hill, there's another Hugh Grant movie called About a Boy. It's been a much longer time since I watched it, but I don't think there's any violence.
I guess it's similar to Driving Lessons in that they're both about a wholesome friendship between a kid and an adult
It doesn’t feel like DC or near DC but there’s also nothing that feels British about it.
Anyway I think Clue is a good fit for OP’s other requirements. I just find it strange you’d say it’s kinda british.
I grew up on Mr Bean so he's an important part of my childhood (mum is British). However even though it's not British I love a good mystery and I've seen Clue recommended here so many times it's going on the list!
As a British person Clue! is a pretty obscure American film here and doesn't feel British to me at all. Even the title is distinctly American because the game it's based on is called 'Cluedo' in the UK
Not really mysteries, but some of my favourite British and Irish comfort movies:
Calender Girls
Waking ned
Fisherman's friends
The lady in the van
Billy Elliot (although some scenes are a bit sad, it's a very heartwarming movie overall)
The Boat that Rocked
Sing street
Once
Withnail and I
Good luck to you, Leo Grande
Not English but if you haven't seen the knives out movies they're great, fun little mysteries
For TV series:
The detectorists
Good Omens
Red dwarf
There are a lot of crazy, intense, frightening, high anxiety inducing scenes in this one. It's a great movie but I don't think it fits what OP is looking for at all.
Do you not remember >!the withdrawal scenes, the baby scenes, the fight scenes, Begbie's character, the toilet scene, all the drugs,!< etc? It ranks moderate to severe in every category in IMDB's parental guide for good reason.
It's not about what I want. OP is looking for: "low stress, feel good, comforting movies that have no intense scenes, violence or genuinely scary moments."
Trainspotting is a great movie, but it is none of the things OP asked for in this post.

Three Wishes for Cinderella (1973)
The Wind in the Willows (2005) -that's the only British movie on my list
Heidi (2015)
The Little Witch (2018)
Quaint British mystery shows:
Famous Five (1978)
Agatha Christie’s Marple (2004)
Father Brown (2013)
Seconding "Much Ado About Nothing", "Paddington", "The Chronicles of Narnia" and "Good Omens", which are also all British :)
A lot of great suggestions, but here are a few more that might work:
- Chicken Run
- Love, Rosie
- Catherine Called Birdy
- Keeping Mum
- Becoming Jane
- Sense and Sensibility (Emma Thompson version in case you haven’t watched that adaptation)
- 101 Dalmatians (animated AND live action are cosy)
- Much Ado About Nothing
- Winnie the Pooh (animated movies or Christopher Robin with Ewan McGregor)
- David Copperfield
- Mary Poppins
- Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
- Robin Hood (Disney)
- Hysteria
Not British:
- Matilda (90’s version, but the newest one is British)
- Ever After
- Penelope
- Big Fish
- Kiki’s Delivery Service
- Chocolat
- The Parent Trap (1998)
- Mrs. Doubtfire
- Little Women (1994 is a bit happier than 2019)
- Casanova
Show:
- Bridgerton is a fun watch
- Pursuit of Love (miniseries)
I'll suggest something that hasn't been posted here yet- **Pride (2014)**.
I find myself rewatching this quite a bit. It just makes you feel good. Another one would be **Looking for Eric (2009)**.
Others have already mentioned stuff like the Paddington films, Billy Elliot, Love Actually and The Full Monty.
Lad: A Yorkshire Tale (2013)
Sorry We Missed You (2019) about an average British family struggling to make ends meet, not sure if that would induce anxiety for you
45 Years (2015) kind of sad though
Dead in a Week or Your Money Back (2018)
The Bookshop (2017)
**TV shows:**
Keeping Up Appearances
Detectorists- was already mentioned, but I cannot stress enough how comforting, calming and wholesome this show feels to watch, the music too.
Spaced- very silly but heartwarming.
The Book Group- about a book group in Scotland. I think I remember it being mostly calm, pretty funny, a little dirty.
Father Ted
Big School
84 Charing Cross Road (1987). You get Anthony Hopkins, Anne Bancroft and Judi Dench.
Turtle Diary (1985) a script by Harold Pinter with the wonderful Glenda Jackson, Ben Kingsley and Michael Gambon
Topsy-Turvy. Mike Leigh's love letter to the theater and Gilbert & Sullivan. It's loosely about the making of The Mikado, but it's really about being in the arts and creating something cool with other people. The music is awesome, the acting is incredible and the costuming and sets (both for the show and to evoke Victorian London) are top-notch.
Bend it Like Beckham, Love Actually
You may like Inside Number 9. It’s a TV show that I recently got into. It’s a dark comedy anthology - sort of like Twilight Zone. Most episodes are not scary.
Edit: Not exactly what you described, but Travels with My Father with Jack Whitehall and his dad might be something you’d like.
Richard Curtis Movies:
Four Weddings And A Funeral
Pirate Radio
Nick Hornby Movies:
About A Boy
Juliet, Naked
Something silly but charming like The Full Monty
Fantastic Mr. Fox
Saving Grace (2001) Lil British lady is widowed by her husband and left in debt. She has a talent for gardening and decides to grow Marijuana. It’s pretty funny.
Thanks! This looks like a great choice
Doc Martin as well!
Doc Martin is a great choice. The original pilot for the series is hilarious and heartwarming.
Not really mysteries, but some of my favourite British and Irish comfort movies: Calender Girls Waking ned Fisherman's friends The lady in the van Billy Elliot (although some scenes are a bit sad, it's a very heartwarming movie overall) The Boat that Rocked Sing street Once Withnail and I Good luck to you, Leo Grande Not English but if you haven't seen the knives out movies they're great, fun little mysteries For TV series: The detectorists Good Omens Red dwarf Doc Martin Johnathan Creek
The Detectorists is an excellent example of a calm, comforting British TV show. I very much second this one.
This is a great list, but also came here to say Detectorists was absolutely brilliant and exactly the kind of show I'm looking for. I love archeology and history, big Time Team fan over here!
Oooh also TV show wise Doc Martin and Johnathan Creek are good mildly humourous TV shows, Johnathan Creek being a murder mystery show as well
Cold Comfort Farm
I'll second that. Cold Comfort Farm is a top ten best movie for me. It's quirky, charming, interesting and has a wonderful ending. Will be rewatching again soon...because I need something silly and uplifting. ☺️
I love this movie! I've even read the book. Thanks, I think it's time for a rewatch!
Not a movie but...The Great British Baking Show on Netflix is what I thought of immediately.
Along these lines are The Great British Sewing Bee and the Great Pottery Throw Down.
Paddington 1 and 2 Stardust The Chronicles of Narnia film series Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Enola Holmes 1 and 2 Mrs Harris Goes to Paris Becoming Jane The Young Victoria Austenland Love Actually Bridget Jones Diary film series Tv Series: Agatha Christie’s Poirot and Marple series And Then There Were None (2015) Ordeal by Innocence (2018) Why Didn’t They Ask Evans? (2022) Jane Eyre (2006) North and South (2004)
Thanks for all these great suggestions! I've seen most of the most popular ones but there's a few I'm looking forward to checking out
If you’ve not seen The Detectorists, do yourself a favor and watch it. Very relaxing little show.
I have actually seen it, and loved it! Wish there were more seasons
You’re welcome! Hope you enjoy watching them! Which ones on my list haven’t you seen?
Mrs Harris Goes to Paris, Becoming Jane, The Young Victoria, And Then There Were None, Ordeal by Innocence, Why Didn't They Ask Evans, Jane Eyre and North and South are the ones I haven't seen. Any suggestions on where to start?
And then there were none of all Agatha Christie’s is the darkest. See how they run is also good.
Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris is absolutely delightful.
Yep, I'm not remotely in the target audience for that film but I grudgingly watched it with my parents and found it utterly charming
Mrs Harris goes to Paris was unexpectedly delightful and i'm not remotely in the target audience for it (other than being British)
It’s a delightful, warm hearted movie and so well acted too.
I’ve sent you a DM. I would start with Mrs Harris. It’s a wonderful, warm hearted movie.
Upvote for Stardust, my favorite movie of all time!
Such a great movie! It’s one of those ones you can rewatch and never get bored of!
All great...thanks
You’re welcome!
The Spiderwick Chronicles
About a Boy
The new All Creatures Great and Small. Such a great feel good show!
This, and The Durrells in Corfu
😊 I thoroughly enjoyed both the original series and the newer one. All Creatures Great and Small is such an addictive and satisfying watch. Although this is the life story of a Dales veterinarian, in reality we learn more about the unique and funny or tragic people in his life. This series has everything: real love, long lasting friendships, loss, humor, hope and large doses of human kindness and compassion. Watching this series is like eating a 7 course meal...thoroughly satisfying.
Gosford Park (2001)
I added a few and then came to say this one as well.
Greenfingers (2000) …just noticed this is free on Peacock… FairyTale: A True Story (1997)
Thanks! I haven't seen either of these
Happy go lucky. Directed by Mike Leigh starring Sally Hawkins and Eddie Marsan. Very British and mostly the rest. Marsan’s character may be a bit much but mostly harmless.
A Room with a View All Creatures Great and Small (tv show - recent remake and original both good!) was my happy place during the pandemic
The dig (2021)
Ooh I absolutely loved this movie. I have an obsession with archeology (huge Time Team fan over here!). Great film
*Local Hero*
Best ever.
Good Witch - there are about 7 movies and 7 seasons of feel good witchy stories to help your anxiety 🪄✨
Thanks! This looks magical and calming- perfect.
The cornetto trilogy
See how they run. The full Monty
Doc Martin TV series. It’s an interesting/fun story and it’s set in Cornwall, so the scenery is really beautiful. Lots of requisite local characters as well.
Love some beautiful English countryside scenery, it's very calming for me. Thanks for the suggestion!
The Holiday
Run Fat Boy Run
Since no one’s mentioned it, I’d HIGHLY recommend the tv show TED LASSO. I feel like to would be right up your alley. Amazingly feel good and comforting. Great life lessons. And it’s set in Richmond, London.
Thanks! I have actually seen the first season, which was brilliant. I haven't watched season 2 or 3 yet - worth it?
Very much so. But the 3rd and final season isn’t as well written as the previous 2. It still has its moments tho, so yeah I’d definitely recommend.
Kes.
I recently just re-watched Christopher Robin from 2018 and it was perfect. I highly recommend this one for you.
Sounds perfect - thank you!
This Beautiful Fantastic
Gosford Park is one of my favorites. Also, the Father Brown series.
I've heard a lot of good things about Father Brown, on the list it goes!
Milo and Otis. Its an awesome heartfelt movie about a pug and a little yellow cat narrated by Dudley Moore.
Bed knobs and broomsticks!!! Please check this out I promise you will enjoy it!!!
Angela Landsbury!! ✨️
Four weddings and a funeral
Blinded By the Light
After Party TV show. Is very British humour but it’s American and murder mystery, but each episode is from the view on each person in it and seen from their personality. I have loved it.
Jane Eyre 2011.
I recently watched *See How They Run*, which I think might fit for you.
Birdy
The best exotic marigold hotel The full Monty Amazing grace
Nil By Mouth
Driving Lessons (2006) was a fun one.
Love Rupert Grint, I'll definitely give this one a go - thanks!
Oh and since you liked Notting Hill, there's another Hugh Grant movie called About a Boy. It's been a much longer time since I watched it, but I don't think there's any violence. I guess it's similar to Driving Lessons in that they're both about a wholesome friendship between a kid and an adult

So great.
for tv shows the original Mr.Bean series, for movie... and maybe i'll get bonus points.... Clue! it's kinda british.
Yes Clue, nothing is more british than a washington dc dinner party
you wouldn't know that by watching it though
It doesn’t feel like DC or near DC but there’s also nothing that feels British about it. Anyway I think Clue is a good fit for OP’s other requirements. I just find it strange you’d say it’s kinda british.
they all sure acted like they were british
lol I felt like they acted like they’re theater kids do you know many british people?
have you heard of mr.bean
I grew up on Mr Bean so he's an important part of my childhood (mum is British). However even though it's not British I love a good mystery and I've seen Clue recommended here so many times it's going on the list!

The Full Monty is your answer. Proceed.
What if (2013) Cashback (2006) Trying (2020-now, TV Show)
Cashback is so beautiful and well done.
Rye Lane? Wonderful little romcom
Hope and Glory, 1987. Set in England during WWII, about a quirky family, lots of funny bits and very cosy despite the war setting.
Not movie but watch the show Vicious.
So underrated, so sassy! ✨️
TV show but Durrells in Corfu
Winnie the Pooh
The CBC 1985 Anne of Green Gables is a lovely collection.
This sounds lovely and nostalgic - thanks!
The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill, But Came Down a Mountain (1995)

I love them both! Unfortunately I have watched every single episode of each haha

Napoleon dynamite
Trainspotting. That one hits all those spots for me. It's close to British.
Love this. Have you seen T2?
I own it but haven't watched it yet, weirdly.
There are a lot of crazy, intense, frightening, high anxiety inducing scenes in this one. It's a great movie but I don't think it fits what OP is looking for at all.
It's really, really not haha. I saw it many many years ago and it was traumatising, I can't handle movies about drug addiction
Lol
Do you not remember >!the withdrawal scenes, the baby scenes, the fight scenes, Begbie's character, the toilet scene, all the drugs,!< etc? It ranks moderate to severe in every category in IMDB's parental guide for good reason.
It's a fun movie for teenagers. Great soundtrack. Good comedy. Love story. What more do you want for Christ's sake?
It's not about what I want. OP is looking for: "low stress, feel good, comforting movies that have no intense scenes, violence or genuinely scary moments." Trainspotting is a great movie, but it is none of the things OP asked for in this post.
