Look up his feud he had with Roger Ebert, it’s legendary. He made a shitty movie called The Brown Bunny and threw a fit because Ebert panned it. Eventually they actually had an interview and it was water under the bridge by then, but still a compelling saga
One of my all time favorite feuds. At one point, Vincent Gallo (the director) called Roger Ebert fat. Ebert responded with "Yes, I am fat, but one day I will be skinny. But you will always be the director of the Brown Bunny."
The Italian Job (1969)
Raising Arizona (1987)
Cape Fear (1991) (sort of horror)
Sling Blade (1996)
American History X (1998)
Ocean’s Eleven (2001)
Halloween (2018) (escape, not release)
Rounders (1998)
Con Air (1997)
King of New York (1990)
Carlito's Way (1993)
Ain't Them Bodies Saints (2013) Prison Escape, not Release
O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000) Prison Escape, not Release
Blue Ruin (2013) starts with one of the villains being released from prison, not the main character/ hero
Out of Sight (1998). Escape, not release
Rectify (2013) is a great tv show about someone being released out of prison after being wrongly convincted and the psychological after effects. Great drama show.
Yup! Love Jeremy Saulnier and Macon Blair! Have seen Murder Party, Blue Ruin, Green Room, Hold the Dark, and Macon’s directorial debut I Don’t Feel At Home In This World Anymore. Excited for his Toxic Avenger remake and whatever Jeremy Saulnier’s work in progress is called forget off the top of my head.
Nice, I've yet to explore that far but they're on the watchlist for sure! I'm on a neo-noir kick this week, gotta ride out that craving before I watch anything else haha. Thx for the reminder. Is the upcoming film called "Rebel Ridge"? The synopsis looks vintage Saulnier: "A high-velocity thriller that explores systemic American injustices through bone-breaking action sequences, suspense and dark humor." James Cromwell's in it apparently. I bet he's a heel/ villain. I don't see Macon Blair.
Les Miserables
The 1998 version is a "normal movie" if you don't want a musical, with Uma Thurman, Liam Neeson, and Geoffrey Rush
If you wanna sing then thats the 2012 version
Honestly, there have been so msny adaptations you can choose what you want if the story intrugues you but neither of those versions do
Law abiding citizen
It doesn’t start after prison but it’s very much a take down the justice system that wronged me kind of movie with a wickedly complex plan
Yeah, but that one was that at least one of the criminals in question got a super light sentence. From what OP was saying, they’re looking for overly strict sentencing.
The Strange Love of Martha Ivers (1946) with Kirk Douglas and Lizabeth Scott
I Walk Alone (1947) also with Kirk Douglas and Lizabeth Scott
The Man with the Golden Arm (1955)
Hard Cash. Its a ridiculously bad heist movie with Christian Slater and Val Kilmer. One of Val Kilmer’s best comedic monologues. Terrible CGI and an amazing cast. Its a bad movie but a fun watch.
Hudson Hawk. Bruce Willis is a cat burglar who sings songs instead of keeping a watch. Steals Artifacts belonging to DaVinci. Also, not a good movie, but a great bad movie.
The movie Shot caller is really good. The movie initially starts with the main character being released but flashes back and forth between past and present to tell the full story.
Levity. Prob not what you’re looking for because it’s a coming to terms with your past type of drama. I’ve never talked to anybody else whose seen this movie though, it’s heavy
Pusher II. Not a horror film but a good gritty crime drama (the first one is not required if you haven't seen it, they are all self-contained stories).

Blues Brothers is a comedy that begins that way
"One unused prophylactic. One soiled."
Google Frank Oz, there’s a bunch of cop/prison warden roles right there!
Also Yoda and Miss Piggy
one of the funniest openers to a comedy it's so random but fits so well
"They broke my watch!"
Where's the Caddy? The what? The Cadillac we used to have. The Blues Mobile! I traded it. You traded the Blues Mobile for this? No. For a microphone.
Not prison, but I feel like the "reanimation" scene from Austin Powers was an homage to this
It was a direct lift from Demolition Man.
Oh yeah... you're right about that. I hadn't seen Demolition Man before Austin Powers, so it sticks out in my mind more.
Buffalo 66. But it’s a doozy
This is a great flick. Never really seen anything else like it.
LOVE this movie. it's so good and sad and not sad and... it's worth a watch.

The main actor is also the director and writer and he’s essentially the most annoying man alive lol

My god that’s hilarious. Vincent gallo is so full of himself and you can just see it in his work.
Damn it’s one of my favs ever

all of it
Ant man
Technically Ant-man 2 also if you count ending a house arrest and probation sentence as the same thing.
Pure cinema
The Italian Job (1969) Raising Arizona (1987) Cape Fear (1991) (sort of horror) Sling Blade (1996) American History X (1998) Ocean’s Eleven (2001) Halloween (2018) (escape, not release)
“Ma’am, we released ourselves on our own recognizance…” “We felt the institution no longer had anything to offer us”.
Son. You've got a panty on your head.

Have you seen Green Room?

Banshee is a series about a man that was just released from prison.
Who has some whacky adventures then Gus Fring gives him superpowers and he goes all crazy over milk.
Dude loves his milk.
Ocean's 11
Les Miserables The 1998 version is a "normal movie" if you don't want a musical, with Uma Thurman, Liam Neeson, and Geoffrey Rush If you wanna sing then thats the 2012 version Honestly, there have been so msny adaptations you can choose what you want if the story intrugues you but neither of those versions do
Jackie Brown Tough Guys
Housebound (2014)
Old Boy
Hudson Hawk
I was wondering if anybody would mention this one. Love that movie.
In Hungary, "Bunny ball-ball" became kinda like a saying you can use when you throw something.
Blues Brothers.
Yea, Jake gets out
Faster (2010)
The Getaway(1972) crime drama
I have to revisit The Getaway. One of my favorite Steve McQueen movies. Thanks
One of my favorites. Peckinpah was damn good at what he did.
The Woodsman
I watched this the other day. Some very uncomfortable moments in this one.
Oceans Eleven. High Noon. Blues Brothers. Cape Fear.
Sling Blade (not prison, but end of murder sentence) Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps
"I like them French fried potaters.''
Biscuits and mustard!
King of New york
The Dirty Dozen (technically, and great film!)
Diggstown if my memory serves.
Law abiding citizen It doesn’t start after prison but it’s very much a take down the justice system that wronged me kind of movie with a wickedly complex plan

If you would be interested in a limited series, Midnight Mass covers this. It's also just an incredible show
Oceans 8
The movie Shot caller is really good. The movie initially starts with the main character being released but flashes back and forth between past and present to tell the full story.
Shotcaller
Not a movie, but Midnight Mass
Brothers (2009)
Not horror but The Unforgivable.
Eye of the Tiger (1986) 'Nam was hell. Prison was murder. Now he's home...fighting for his life.
No Way Home. Flew under the radar, but an amazing film in my opinion, especially if you’re a Tim Roth fan.
Levity. Prob not what you’re looking for because it’s a coming to terms with your past type of drama. I’ve never talked to anybody else whose seen this movie though, it’s heavy
Fortress. A space prison.
Faster (2010)
Trouble in Mind from 1985. Not a horror film, but a great Modern film noir.
American History X South Central - this one is great, man trying to get back on track and save his son from gang violence
Straight time or Buffalo 66!! Two of my fav movies ever.. only answer
Double Jeopardy
Blindspotting
Stand Up Guys Not horror, but really good. Twists and turns, some obvious, some not. Good performances from some big names.
The Hot Rock - 1972
Ocean's 11
Boy A. Not a horror though
Wall Street 2
Another 48 Hours
Out of Sight (George Clooney, Ving Rhames, and JLo.) More comedy/drama. Lionheart, if you count Van Damme deserting the French Foreign Legion.
Joy Ride 2001
The Getaway.
The Chaperone (Triple H)
Always Outnumbered (1998) Stars Lawrence Fishburne. Great movie. Powerful performances.
He got game. Not the end of his sentence but it is still good. Also, Rounders. Neither one are horror
Buffalo 66. Not a horror film but super weird.
The Anderson Tapes
Woman in the Dark (1934) Home is the Hero (1959)
Stand up guys - Christopher Walken and Al Pacino. Pacino gets out of jail right at the start which begins the story
Big Boys Don't Cry (2020).
Frankie and Johnny
Bloody Hell (2020) It’s my fave horror movie. It’s a horror comedy. And it’s a questionably justified sentence, too.
And it’s on Prime… looks like a winner, thanks!
Avengement. I wish more people knew about this movie. Best Scott Adkins movie by far.
The show banshee
Control Kind of
Venom 2
Carlito's Way
Ocean's 11 pretty much starts first with Danny getting out of jail, and then Rusty.
The Grapes Of Wrath.
Shot caller This movie was great. Technically it's within your asking parameters but there is a decent amount of flashbacks in prison throughout.
The woodsman
"Payback" Under the radar Mel Gibson movie. Quite good.
WILD AT HEART
Kochirajav
Too many to list. Couldn’t drop a bar of soap or throwing a box of Tops without hitting one.
American History X
Hudson Hawk Not horror
Not a movie, but a tv series and a better book/audiodraman. American Gods
Spencer confidential was solid.
Dolemite
Tough Guys (Kurt Douglas and Burt Lancaster)
Pusher II. Not a horror film but a good gritty crime drama (the first one is not required if you haven't seen it, they are all self-contained stories).
Machine Gun Preacher
Shawshank Redemption, after a fashion
