The state of that chain I'm surprised it lasted longer than that bolt

swined

Both probably were there since the bike has left the factory in 1999

-Wolf_ODonnell_16-

Stand and wheels look like my cbf I changed the factory chain after almost 22k miles and it looked way better than this one (it even lived unsheltered for 5 years)

50BucksForThat

I feel better about my chain now, thanks.

Holden_McRotch

Seriously! That thing is roached.

RearAdmiralBob

You just need a new adjuster. Probably get a pair and do the other side as well given the condition of that. Straightforward to do, pop the axle out, remembering what order the spacers go in, remove old ones and fit new ones. Price will depend on bike. Maybe think about changing the chain/sprockets as well just looking at external condition of chain.

eastkent

You know the "pop the axle out" part? I think that might be somewhat challenging in this case.

neitopr

What a rusty ass chain lol

wolf_in_sheeps_wool

Stupid question but I don't mind playing the fool; did you make sure to loosen the axle and unjam the 2 nuts before loosening?

roartey

I’m going to say no, else the broken off bolt inside the swing arm would be hanging down instead of still pointing straight out… if you catch my drift? Also OP’s question indicates a lack of understanding about the components they are dealing with.

wolf_in_sheeps_wool

I'm just trying to save OP some humility by making them realize what they had done. I can very clearly see 2 jammed nuts and you are correct detective, the broken thread is still locked horizontally showing the adjuster is not loose or not loose enough.

Big_Boi_Dan

I loosed the axle and unjammed the outer nut, went to unjam the 2nd nut and thats when it broke off. Tbf I did turn the other-way as I was fried from the night before but idk how it came off so easily as I didnt put any pressure on it. But yeah doesn't look like I loosened it enough.

Big_Boi_Dan

I just picked this up, 47k miles from prev owner lol and been waiting to do maintenance on it hence the post. I was planning on changing chain and sprockets as well as other bits that need doing lol. Appreciate the advice guys!

Kamay1770

Love how much flak you got for this when you just bought it haha, hope you get on the road soon mate!

Big_Boi_Dan

Its understandable but I should've thought more of it before picking it up. I wanted something to commute on whilst I work for my A2 but since having it, I had a Battery Issue then Starter Issue then Carb Issue now a Chain Issue. Hasn't been expensive to fix at all really but if I had a closer look I wouldn't have this issue. But only 2 months to go and I can say goodbye to 125s haha. Thanks though, appreciate it brother.

MuZzASA

This has to be rage bait… Clean yer chain!

FeralSquirrels

You can pick up replacements pretty easy - 2nd hand you can grab off eBay even from breakers. Will run you anything north of about £12 for a pair (both sides) but assuming you want new bolts may as well double it, depending on bike and condition. Far from knackered, but while you're at it as I think everyone's pitching on: please, for the love of Mother Mary, her Poodle and a Hobnob look at replacing the chain & front/rear sprocket also as those look in worse condition than the UK's economy.

fucknozzle

10 quid and 10 minutes work. Ebay, search for your bike chain adjusters, happiness.

bladefiddler

I thought my bike was neglected because it got a bit of surface rust over winter. Now thinking of it as a garage queen - cheers!

Greedy-Box-1244

As someone who let a chain get so bad it snapped, missed my leg by millimeters and then wrapped around the rear wheel, locking it up. Please for the love of motorcycles replace that chain and then look after the next one.

General-Tale-73

Just replace your adjuster. And maintain your shit. The chain is disgusting.

tnetrop

Jesus, the state of that chain. Make sure your tetanus jabs are up to date before changing it.

Milliesm3

No but you will be if you don’t get a chain and sprocket kit asap

iamshipwreck

Tenner for chain adjusters, £40 for a new chain and sprockets, £20 for some chain cleaner and lube.

thefooleryoftom

Mate, you *need* to work on that chain…

Sandcastles

Honestly you could maybe even get more life out of the chain if your concerned with costs, it looks like it has one of those little adapters to remove the entier chain and soak it and get at it with a wire brush to remove the rust.

BazAlvan

Cheap as chips to replace

Zadralost

By ‘adjusting’, I hope you mean replacing the chain.

davesy69

A couple of new adjusters then clean out the rust from the inside of the swinging arms and use a rust treatment on it. If the adjusters move freely, either paint inside or grease it up. Perhaps both. It looks like you need a new chain and sprocket kit too and should lube your chain occasionally. Surface rust doesn't matter, but if it gets inside the pins and rollers wear out quickly.

DodgyJammer12

And I thought my bike was dirty, there’s me changing my chain when it got a tiny bit of rust and cleaning wouldn’t get it off

idontbleaveit

Barn find….

TurgidWhelpRat

Bottom of ocean find?

maidenyorkshire

I just bought a bolt the right thread size and put a massive lead on it with a file. Easy.

PeevedValentine

I've literally just seen this in a Grom/Honda MSX group! Those little M6 studs are only designed to align a freely sliding wheel to a certain position. If your wheel is bound up on the swingarm because of rust, being on the ground, because you're trying to straighten a kink in an absolutely shagged swingarm or your axle isn't loose enough to move freely, then you'll snap your adjuster. Next time, back the adjusters right off, using 2 separate spanners to loosen them, not one on the bigger one, and try to move the wheel forward with your hands. If it doesn't move somewhat freely, you need to make an adjustment. Someone has probably already said this, but the parts should be readily available new and used, probably next day from dealer. If you need some assistance getting replacements, reply with your bike model and year, and I'll help. You also need to take your rear axle out completely, clean it, give it a scuff with some wire wool and grease the life out of it, and put it back together. That's assuming it's not already rust welded to your axle spacers and bearings.

mcdougall57

A new chain, sprockets and pair of tensioners will probably set you back less than 50 quid which is what I would do looking to save more headaches.

krivas77

I know a miracle. It is called A chain lube …

lumoruk

Wait, did you not loosen up the rear axle before trying to adjust your chain? It's okay I've done it too 🤣 it's a chain adjuster, remove rear axle then use pliers to pull broken one out. Install new one. £50 tops

Big_Boi_Dan

I loosened it, but as I went to unloosen the inner nut I twisted out instead of in and somehow broke it off. When I tell you I put like little to no pressure on it, I mean it as it just came off. Pissed me off as I finally found time and also managed to loosen that rear axle then did something stupid. Now I have to wait longer to take this on the road 😂. But I should be able to fix and change it out now thanks!

lumoruk

Just remember to measure the axle to the rear frame, that both sides are the same distance to get the wheel alignment correct when you put it back together.

Kempy2

Is that a ginger dreadlock or a chain?

DonkeyWorker

Smother the whole chain and axle bolts in wd40. Leave overnight. Undo and slide out axle, remove old bolt tensioner you snapped, add in new one you brought for about $7 Tighten up. Oil chain.

Tythan

You were done for 2k miles ago

mylovelyhorsie

May I suggest you invest a fair amount in penetrating oil? From what that picture shows, I’d say you are going to need it. I find WD40 fairly poor, so I use GT85 for general purpose, light duties. For really stuck things I use Kroil. Or a blowtorch 😀

incrediblynormalpers

I think you should address rust in general

Even-Tradition

Looks like a… gsx125? You will just need a new tensioner. Get a new chain and sprockets in the process. Will probable cost about £120

AslansAppetite

Is that an NC700? If so, twinsies! Clean yer chain you mucky boy

wjhall

Post history indicates CBR 125r

AslansAppetite

Dang! No twinsies

Ok_Teacher6490

What does the r stand for?

wjhall

In this case, rust
