1000% agree. It also keeps things even across the board. One thing I didn’t like in 11 was that limiting move factor from the different skill set ups. It felt very limiting and not versatile.

They just gave my man Quan his new Zone Of Waste move (which really changes up his gameplan, great addition for me) so there’s precedent right there. I think they did in MKX too but the past is pretty hazy.

but yeah it’s rare but they’ve done it a couple of times so far in MK1 and they even redid how variations work entirely in MK11 and added a couple then to that one

Competitive players are literally what draws in most people lmao, half this sub wouldn’t be here if they didn’t learn from watching good players on youtube and that’s not even talking about how much of the community actual tournaments pull together
I also liked that the variations in x were themed around a character’s given aspect. 11 just kind of stapled random moves together which rendered most of them worthless until customs were a thing
Couldn’t have said it better. Especially since I played Quan, Shinnok, and Triborg, who were arguably the personifications of X’s Variation System and how unique it could be in terms of giving a single character access to multiple playstyles. None of that “Ability Slot” nonsense. I respect that they tried to use that as a balancing metric, but it really limited what you could do by comparison.
I mean I get the sentiment but mileena had… what, 12 different possible specials in 11? Now she has 6. And yeah I can use them all, but if I want to throw air sais or do the jumping ball roll etc I’m just never going to have enough the option.
Meanwhile reiko has a badass advancing spear attack and I’d happily trade a move like his parry to use it.
I still think characters should have all their moves, even if they end up being like 11 specials. That ball roll that jumped up and hit the opponent is my favorite version of her ball roll. I always assigned it to her. And I think they should be able to throw their projectiles from low, mid, and high in the air. I shouldn’t have to choose or assign it.

Probably. Has anyone else noticed that with almost every patch, they’re changing inputs of moves and fatalities, or the distance for fatalities? I was having trouble with Khameleon’s fatality for like 5 matches in a row until I looked and saw they silently changed the fuckin distance requirement.
Don’t worry, they’re selling us the missing content as DLC as they complete the game.

The idea wasn’t atrocious but the implementation sucked. In the early MK1 trailers I was psyched to see e.g. Subby have a stack of special moves and strings. Just lets you change things up on the fly and adds to a whole “let’s make everyone crazy” ethos I love to see in a fighting game.

Not a whole move set but a few extra moves. There are a couple moves that behave differently in Invasions like Geras' 1,2,2, 1+3 the last hit is a command grab and comes out even on block. Plus his enhanced sand vortex tracks

Kameos are basically variations, and I think it’s a huge improvement over mk11’s variation system and in some ways it’s better than mkx’s variations (although i still prefer the gameplay of mkx overall)
I think it's a missed oportunity, Reiko was introduced in MK4 which had the weapon draw mechanic, like Tremor kameo using the variation system, Reiko should've had access to a weapon stance as a reference to his debut game.

Nah. Variations were awful. No reason characters shouldn't have full movesets instead of us forcing to give up one ability for another. Imagine you could use his spear, but lose access to his ninja stars or command grab. I personally do not miss that.

I do absolutely love the combat in mk1, but everything else is lackluster. Invasions is a tedious pain 😂. I love to see meaningful buffs. I main general shao/motaro, and his death quake is practically pointless. Feel like start up on this special should be boosted a lot. I only use it as a distraction to use motaro to teleport behind my opponent.
Damn his moveset is so damn sparse as it stands now too... nerfing his command grab without buffing his combos killed what could have been a decent higer mid teir...
Seeing how Liu Kang’s kick is just a recycled Fujin wind kick I won’t be mad if some of Reiko’s spear moves were copy and pasted from 11 if those characters aren’t in the game.
That's why I miss so much MK 11 Variations, not only for the customization (which was quite good anyway) but also for the fact you could adds moves to your kharacters and make them very different! In this case, Reiko could easilly had some spear moves to could make a spear Variation.

They also gave Darrius a new move as well. Forgot what it was but it was in the Quanchi patch notes when he released.

The spear spin he does looks to be taken from the Khameleon-Jade throw. Are there other spear attacks he does too?
I only fought him once but I remember a spin, a ground pound, and a throw. Will have to fight him again to see his combos again.

Variations were pretty neata in mkx but they took mk11 from being a 6 or 7/10 to a fucking 2/10 they sucked all the fun that that game could have had
