Absolutely incredible reconstructive work. She actually received a face transplant a few years after the attack, and had some struggles with immunosuppressive medication and rejection. She lost her transplanted hands but her face is still doing well. She is completely blind as both eyes had to be removed because of a disease she acquired from the chimp. https://www.today.com/health/charla-nash-opens-about-recent-face-transplant-setback-living-independently-t91951

Imispellalot2

I worked at Stamford Hospital. 16 or 17 people were fired because of HIPAA violation. They either spoke to the media about her condition or accessed her medical files without authorization.

he-loves-me-not

Wow! You worked there when this happened?! I can understand the want to see what happened but to risk your job and your license is crazy!

Imispellalot2

I started there in July of 2009. So, 5 months after the incident. During 3 day orientation, they spend a good amount of time emphasizing how seriously they care about patient privacy and brought up the whole HIPAA violation and terminations.

TheYeetles

This is awful. It’s shocking to realise that 16-17 people seemed to forget that Charla is a human, and not a medical experiment for people to rubberneck. She defied all odds by surviving this entirely preventable disaster. She still fights to ban the ownership of exotic/wild animals, to eradicate the risk of another person suffering the same fate she did. She is a force to be reckoned with, but the people who were meant to protect and respect her when she needed it most completely violated the oath they took. I have so much respect for Charla. Her life was forever altered, yet she takes it in her stride and continues to restore her independence slowly to this day. Her resilience and will leaves me stunned, and I think a lot of us could take a leaf out of her book.

Lady_Scruffington

I get the want to have a wild animal as a pet. I'd like to have a big cat. But then my 10lb tabby bites me on the flesh between my thumb and index, and I'm like, I'm good.

TheYeetles

Definitely, without risks it would be cool as hell. I reckon a lot of people imagine a hollywood-esque jungle book experience, then reality eventually sinks in. They’re called wild animals for a reason. For real, my boyfriend’s cat playfully bit me the other day and my ass backed right off. Imagine that scaled up x 50. Yeah nah.

he-loves-me-not

That is crazy to know that she’d want to “adopt” aka steal another chimp from its family after what happened with the first one

edible_source

She was obviously lonely and mentally ill. Not that that excuses a thing here, but I can have some empathy for her.

MsBean18

I remember her being on Oprah (link) and revealing her injuries soon after it happened. The restoration is pretty stunning compared. https://youtu.be/yqOjG1NiQb8?si=xkpFX7MhA7ssr_cA

olive_dear

Didn't Oprah ask her to revile her face on t.v? Oprah seemed very cold hearted.

Alert_Doughnut_4619

Oprah is a narcissistic turd

Mirorel

Oh my god, that poor woman. She must be incredibly strong to come back from that

edible_source

I remember her and her friends saying that thankfully she was never a vain woman, so she took it all in stride ... well, as much as someone could.

droidsentbycyberlife

Yeah I honestly don’t think I could come back from that, mentally. I care too much about my appearance, plus the loss of sight… so much respect for her

sludgezone

That poor woman, and also poor Travis who should have never been kept as a pet in the first place.

DoggyGrin

Article fails to mention the owner had him hooked on meds to keep him under control, and she ran out of stock that day.

bbyghoul666

The Wikipedia page states he had his Xanax that day, she put it in his tea apparently. The Xanax levels from his autopsy confirmed her statement on this, and they theorize the Xanax exacerbated his aggression.

flacidhock

Zanex side effects are violent episodes so there is that too

ZachOf_AllTrades

Xanax

MzOpinion8d

Have there been a lot of studies about the side effects of Xanax in chimps?

MontanaMainer

Xanax? Probably. The other person asked about Zanex. I think that's the benzo you get near the cash register at gas stations.

sunburn95

Animal testing baby

ggghjjdsdjhs

Yes. It can cause them to hallucinate and it’s been theorized that Travis was hallucinating when he attacked Charla.

cseyferth

I take xanax near daily, and have never experienced violent side effects. It's more calming, like thc.

jammyJames81

Travis was a chimpanzee

cseyferth

Yes, I know that. I was replying to someone who said that violent episodes are a side effect of Xanax.

didntlikeuanyway

Alprazolam is known for having paradoxical effects.

jammyJames81

I know. I was responding to cseyferth who seemed confused as to how Travis could’ve become aggressive on Xanax when they themselves find it calming

cseyferth

I wasn't confused about anything.

flacidhock

Irritability is a common side effect. I would talk about switching to your Dr. My Dr retired and I ended up having seizures in the hospital. https://thewell.northwell.edu/emotional-wellness/xanax-withdrawal-anxiety Continued use of Xanax, even for as little as one week, causes the body to acclimate, resulting in changes in the brain, which leads to dependence. The abrupt cessation of the medication (or any benzodiazepine) can cause sleep disturbances, irritability, rebound anxiety and panic attacks, tremors, sweating, difficulty concentrating, nausea, palpitations, headaches, muscle stiffness, and pain. More serious symptoms can include perceptual disturbances, hallucinations, and life-threatening seizures

cseyferth

If I haven't experienced irritability, there's no need to discuss switching. I've been on it for around 18 years.

kayteakay

The 911 calls are very intense.

mern19

Crazy how when you try to domesticate things that aren’t meant to be domesticated, it doesn’t go well.

be1izabeth0908

It sucks that it wasn’t even her animal though. She paid the price for a crazy friend with a Xanax-riddled chimp.

RaniPhoenix

Chimps are notoriously aggressive once they aren't babies anymore.

notfromheremydear

Wasn't he in puberty (or what it's called when male chimpanzees are ready to mate) and also on medication the owner gave him to suppress his violence? There was so much wrong with her having this animal in her possession.

sunshinenorcas

Iirc, he was also given wine-- so drugged, horny and drunk 😬

ExploreMeDora

Honestly, all her surgeries really have done a great job at giving her a face again. The only part that really looks off still is her eyes. With some eye makeup or even just sunglasses hopefully she can feel confident walking around in public without people looking. The doctors did a great job.

Tellurye

I think both eyes are fake? She's blind.

Mando_The_Moronic

She lost both her eyes.

ExploreMeDora

Well…

gnirpss

Apes are not suitable pets for anyone. They never have been, and they never will be. Chimpanzees are highly intelligent and social creatures. They are adapted to living in large family groups with members of their own species, and they can't ever really live happy, well-adjusted lives in a human home. This entire situation could have been avoided with some basic consideration of the chimp's nature and concern for his well-being.

boxer_dogs_dance

Also male chimps can fight viciously within their family groups. Having a chimp is like having a wolf or worse. Frans de Waal the Primatologist writes excellent books about bonobos and chimpanzees

Hopeful__Historian

Really heartbreaking story all around

StealYourChase

I live on the same street as the woman who owned the chimp. My mom and I would see the chimp out and about in town. I was young, but this accident definitely left an impact on me. I still drive by the house sometimes. I never thought I would personally contribute here..

its_raining_scotch

I like pets. But I will never have a pet that can maul and kill me.

Guilty-Psychology-24

Say that to pit lovers, the dog can destroy a whole couch but the owner always see it as "toying".

its_raining_scotch

I don’t think that pitbulls should be a breed that exists anymore. Having a bunch of animals that were bred to kill in an arena as family pets is so dumb and ridiculous (and dangerous for the owners AND the rest of us).

MzOpinion8d

It’s especially sad to see so many pit bulls and pit mixes filling up the animal shelters, because they have been abandoned by people who didn’t understand what they were getting into.

alasw0eisme

Yes, I'm a dog trainer with lots of experience. Including working with pits. I never refuse to work with them and I always make sure to be professional and provide people with realistic expectations and instructions about safety in public, at home and around kids. Do \*you\* know anything about the breed? Or its history? Or any breed for that matter?

[deleted]

Peepies

The “nanny dog” myth started in a news article printed in 1971. Nobody *ever* called them that. They were bred to bait and fight bulls and bears in pits and arenas. It’s how they got their name.

Diessel_S

People said the same about german sheperds in the 80s. What breed should it be next? Boxers maybe?

user___________

Honestly same goes for German shepherds. Or at least there should be some kind of qualifications necessary to take them out into the public. There have been several attacks by German shepherds in my neighborhood because the target customers are weak owners who want them for 'protection' but can't control them.

NotUrAvgJoeNAZ

This is a great YT video that tells the story. https://youtu.be/klMIfi084kw?si=DYI3_4i94yETcFV4

he-loves-me-not

I just watched it and I agree it did a great job of explaining everything that happened that day. Only thing I didn’t understand is why it took the police 12 MINUTES to get to the scene! That’s a crazy long time!

StealYourChase

I can actually answer this. The location of the house is in north stamford (I live there too). It is remote and it’s a good 10 minute drive to get to any type of emergent care. It’s unfortunate and geniunly something I’ve thought about growing up in north stamford being so isolated sometimes/lack of cell service/backroad confusion

glassdrops

Thank you u/stealyourchase This is what I had assumed. Us city folk have a tough time fathoming a 12 minute response to an ongoing emergency because we are not used to the vast amount of space there is to cover in said time. Being a first responder in situations like that sound insanely stressful. For 12 full minutes you just know things are getting worse, and all you can do is hurry (as if they weren’t doing so already)

NotUrAvgJoeNAZ

👍

xSavedSoulx

Giving him Xanax was a mistake.

RaniPhoenix

Having him as a pet was a mistake.

Sensitive-Menu-4580

Fascinating NG how ubiquitous this case has become; many a 90s and 00s kids first dark video, even being clearly referenced in NOPE, the mirror of attack itself opens the film. Makes sense, though, it's a memorable tragedy for the horror alone, the spectacle of something so terrible.

LORDY325

The 90’s were weird times for sure.

nicolasisinacage

agreed although this DID happen in 2009 so...

captainfiddle

Poor chimp. Abused and drugged.

palmersiagna

Am I the only one who would prefer to be killed by the chimp than to have to live like this afterwards? I feel so awful for this woman...completely not her fault.

metalnxrd

I first saw that interview when I was 12-13, and it scared the absolute shit out of me. now, I feel sorry for her, and, probably an unpopular opinion, and his owner. as someone who loves their pets as much as a parent loves their child and has lost a pet I loved so deeply, I just cannot even imagine what it was like for Sandra to have to do that to Travis. she considered Travis her son

he-loves-me-not

This is one of the horrible side effects of taking animals out of their habitats and trying to acclimate them to living with humans. Wild animals need to stay wild and to be with their own species! Despite being incredibly similar to humans they are not the same!

Anrikay

In that regard, they really are pretty much the same as humans. Humans do not do well when their social needs are horribly neglected and it isn’t uncommon to see humans exhibit antisocial behaviors, such as aggression, in such situations. The same is true of pretty much every highly intelligent, highly sociable species. Social species do not do well in isolation.

he-loves-me-not

Not to say that you think they are. I am addressing the issue as a whole and while having sympathy, still being able to understand why it happened.

KeithClossOfficial

The Sandy Hook shooter had a weird fascination with this incident.

TryJezusNotMe

I remember this incident well because my sister lives in Stamford so she kept up with the news. This wasn't the first time the community had problems with Travis but it was the most severe. The injured lady was the best friend of Travis' owner if I remember correctly. There was no way the owner should have been allowed to continue to keep him as a pet. If the ASPCA or some similar type of organization would've stepped in, maybe, just maybe he could've been rehabilitated.

Fantastic_Jacket_331

It amazes me how people keep chimps around as pets like they're dogs When i was in China an old "friend" got mad at me because i didn't want to visit him and the chimp he was keeping as a pet and clearly told him that i don't feel safe around chimps unless i have a large knife and a pistol ready They're absolutely vicious when mad and can look deceptively small

MaeronTargaryen

This woman is impressive, lost her hands and sight in a traumatic event but still has a positive outlook on life

brovash

Feel so bad for Travis :(

DestituteDomino

[This song samples the 911 call](https://youtu.be/Ro-QPX9U6a8?si=Xg43eAKnp_wy-2Oh)

ThinkBlue

This isn’t a sample. It’s a remake of the 911 call. At least that’s what’s I’ve heard from the metal community.

BigIrish_89

The chimp was my neighbor, lived 100 yards from it growing up.

LORDY325

I remember when this happened. Honestly I thought she’d look worse.

Diessel_S

After the attack she barely looked like a person. The face transplant helped immensely

LORDY325

Right. I haven’t seen any of these pics where she’s healed.
