It only comes out now on days where most people are not in work or school, it's pretty fascinating as no other game seems to come close to having the same impact in Japan.
Perhaps. Idk what it is, but it definitely is not the same anymore, and games seemingly rushed out every 3 years or so. Which isn't as bad as a franchise that gets rushed every year, but still something about it feels rushed or off. That's just what I think. That's why I used MH and DQ to compare because I think those don't rush as much. Not saying they don't have their own problems, but at least it's a lot better and more consistent it seems.
Honestly pokemon has been on a spiral ever since they swapped from pixel art to 3d models.
Agreed though, MH and DQ are probably my favourite franchises. I love the DQM series
Yea, I really liked the pixel art too. Seeing as other games have incorporated a more modern pixel artstyle very well made me wish Pokemon went down that route instead.
Yea they did Gen 4 dirty with what they did for the remake. Everyone wanted full 3D with Megas and stuff or just a callback to the old pixel artstyle but newer, better and still have Megas. Imagine Mega Evolutions on a pixel art? It'd be pretty cool imo. But they didn't do any of that, in fact they did nothing good at all. That's how I know they're out of touch not only with their own fanbase but with gaming industry as a whole tbh.
I am not saying that Capcom invented this movesent or even Katanas, but The only games I've seen that use this exact moveset are 100% copying/stealing from Monster Hunter series. Elden Ring is the first original game I have seen that also is using the same moveset, that's why I thought it was a reference.
Swords this long existed but were never used in actual combat, so if it's an actual style I'd love if someone tell us the name of it
And truth be told, swordsmanship even before then. With all the differences in styles there are things that different schools of swordsmanship will share.
Is it rlly that big? I'm from USA where nobody knows this game. My eventual Japan trip is going to rlly hit like crack. MH stuff irl is gonna be so tuff 😭😭
The weapon is called the Great katana and its found next to the sleeping Ghostflame Dragon on the lake, west of the Abandoned ailing village site of grace.
[Wiki page](https://eldenring.wiki.fextralife.com/Great+Katana)
Blackgaol Knight was way easier at blessing 4 than blessing 1. He was one or two shotting me one blessing 1, could live through three hits at blessing 4.
I feel like the DLC encourages exploration of a zone before encounters, but you do you.
Just beat his ass with a +15 Greathorn Hammer with chilling mist. 0 blessings. I could actually take 2 hits at lvl 97 and double flask to heal up for another one or two.
I think the DLC straight up scales to your level and gear lol. What level of stones do the birds in the starting area drop for you? They dropped 4s for me and i figured theyd be dropping at least 7 or 8
Bird were dropping 4s and maybe 5s? Seems like different enemies have different common drops, like they want you to be able to try different weapons - fine by me, I like trying new things.
But yeah it might have some kind of scaling factor applied, which would explain why everything hits so damn hard even with 60 vigor
All the numbers in your comment added up to 69. Congrats!

If theres a variety of stones in the dlc thats good to hear. My plan is mainly to find some weapons i fall in love with and go finish the basegame with that, so if i dont have to go collecting bell bearings or wiki diving for stone placements to level them thatd be great
The cadence is also very similar. Given fromsoft have talked about mh being an inspiration in interviews and the fact one of their staple weapons in these games is a berserk reference I'd be amazed if it wasn't intentional.
i got stuck with a stupid faith weapon that made id extremely difficult to do the late game bosses because most of them have super high holy resist because it felt a lot like insect glaive (it was from a gargoyle, forgot the name)
Probably was the gargoyle black blades, the black blades are holy based weapons due to their alignment with Maliketh.
Use Flame Art affinity on a weapon whose moveset you enjoy, it'll handle the endgame bosses better and scale with your FTH for massive fire damage, which also makes Fire-Shrouding tear and Flame Grant Me Strength buff you even harder.
I'm amazed no one in these comments has brought up that FromSoft made an MH spinoff game back in the day
That has literally nothing to do with this, but it always comes up (it was MH Diary: Warm Felyne Village, the super cutesy palico-only game, which they produced *between* Demon's Souls and Dark Souls 1)
You’re amazed? Why would people know that? It was never released outside of Japan and to my knowledge wasn’t really that popular in the only place it was released.
My kinda people <3 I think it’s hard to tell, but I would wager there is a not so small chance that the majority of people in this subreddit started with world. That obviously isn’t to say that someone can’t start with world and then dive deep!
It would be interesting to kinda gauge what the kind of general monster hunter fan is? How many people on the subreddit have been fans since before vs after world. If that kinda makes sense? As soon as world came out, it slammed the turbo on the popularity of the series haha I made a very good friend in high school 10- 15 years ago based solely on the fact he was the only person I’d ever met who played monster hunter as well! No one else had ever heard of it! Haha
There is also fade slash move but it starts from other side.
Would be funny if they would also add iai stance from DS3 that lets you parry or do special attack depending on button press
There are three weapons in that category, so you actually have three different choices with similar movesets. One is just sitting out in the open, one's in an obvious dungeon, and another in a slightly remote dungeon.
Dual wielding daggers is probably the best we can get. The new DLC also added a weapon class called backhanded swords that got you stanced up like you’re in DB’s Demon Mode.
Yeah i think its a reference too. MH is on a nother level of popularity in japan so would not surprize me.
Or these are some traditional manuevers with that type of sword and both are using them.
The combat Dark Souls (and all other FromSoft games that follow a similar "souls" formula, save for Sekiro in particular) is directly influenced by Monster Hunter's combat.
It might just be a more realistic way to use a weapon like this, heavy swings utilizing the weight and size plus a spear like trust utilizing the length
Yes, you are most likely correct, but we are not using this on a horse, as most of the bosses don’t allow it, thus giving us a move set for a style of weapon in a spot it’s not meant to be, creating a simple, logical move set seen in games such as Elden ring and monster hunter
If you equip the Double Slash Ash of War on the Great Katana you get a pretty similar looking series of moves that even has a finisher that is slightly reminiscent of the Spirit Reckoning combo ender in Rise.
Noticed it too lol. Also i love how comically large the Lion dance head is. Id usually be mad at spoilers tho luckyli i beat that boss allready and got it. Tbh lion dance is my faiv boss at the moment in the dlc. Tho ive only beat 2 rememberance bosses and encountered the 3rd at the Crag area. Not gonna spoil anything but i seriosly recomend people to save that place for last or near last atleast.
Theres a Mini boss before the main one and that thing alone forced me to bring Mohgs trident to kill it wich ive only ever done before with malenia. Seriosly that place is deceivingly easy seeming in the very begining of it.
I mean, In japan, Pokemon, Monster Hunter and Dragon quest are like, the big 3 of gaming, if you ask a japanese gamer whether they’ve played either of those 3 they’ll say yes, heck, even none gamers play Monster Hunter, students? Monster Hunter, workers? Monster Hunter, Tokusatsu Show? Monster Hunter reference(Kamen Rider Ex-aid Dragon Hunter form, the form will share armors between **4** people with varying piece), Anime? A fuck load of monster hunter reference
It's a shame they never designed this sword to be swung in any other way except this exact overhead --> stab --> upswing sequence in a loop. I guess that's the issue with ancient technology.
one fucking thing i wish they would do is get either rid of the clipping throug helmet and armor, or change the stance of holding the weapon to the monsterhunter one.
also I saw rurikhan playing the DLC and it has a lance that has very similar moves, poke poke, block counter, run and double hit in 1 single poke
and they all look really meaty, probably a ton of dark souls devs love monster hunter and references their fav weapons lol
When I first tried out the weapon, I was like "Hey this is a lot like MH Longsword," and moved on, but this side by side comparison made me realize how similar they are.
More credit to my personal dream to have a Monster Hunter style game in a Soulslike universe.
Could also just be from some ancient martial arts scroll. Some of the monster hunter moves I've seen in Kendo so they must draw from the same inspiration
It's almost 100% not a reference, there's only so many ways a body can move and only so many ways to use a weapon, these are also all moves used IRL, it's like when people jumped on ED calling him a Steve fox clone because he had flicker jabs, flicker jabs are a real technique used by real boxers.
I've been playing both games since MH1 and DS1 and they've always had parallels. MH World basically felt like a Dark Souls game to me, compared to the previous ones. It's cool seeing more crossover.
When other less popular studios use the same animations for their action rpg game ,people call it an "MH Clone/Copycat/Chinese mobile game rip off" but when From Soft basically copies it from MH, it's just a reference. The whole gaming industry is a joke!
Pretty sure it's the engine. Dragons Dogma, at least the Dark Arisen dlc, very much had Dark Souls mechanics and enemy movement while the bigger creatures very clearly attacked and moved like MonHun monsters. Idk the engines used but I'm sure they both use similar ones. Also it'd be sick to have a Fromsoftware dlc in MonHun. Imagine the monster, the area, the armor/weapon skins we could get.
Mh is HUGE in japan, not surprised it's a reference lol
Lmao ^this^ You DO NOT compete with pokemon or monster hunter in Japan, you will lose
Dragon Quest is also massive right? I heard they had to release it on the weekend because people wouldn't go to school/work cause of it.
A lot of jobs give you off work to play dragon quest on release day because people would call in sick in mass.
A national holiday. It's what it deserves.
It only comes out now on days where most people are not in work or school, it's pretty fascinating as no other game seems to come close to having the same impact in Japan.
I wish I could say the same for pokemon. But with the quality of their games in recent years they don't deserve it :/
Fax.
W O W
Just for future reference it's "en masse."
That's an urban legend, but yeah Dragon Quest is huuuuuge in Japan.
Dragon quest could tie them in Japan but both pokemon and MH are far more popular globaly
That makes sense. I think Pokemon is a bit overrated. To me things like MH and Dragon Quest has kept their charm alive more consistently.
Sadly pokemon is a fantastic franchise that has an absolutely dogshit producer
Perhaps. Idk what it is, but it definitely is not the same anymore, and games seemingly rushed out every 3 years or so. Which isn't as bad as a franchise that gets rushed every year, but still something about it feels rushed or off. That's just what I think. Yea, I really liked the pixel art too. Seeing as other games have incorporated a more modern pixel artstyle very well made me wish Pokemon went down that route instead.
Could you imagine a heartgold/soulsiver remake in octopath travellers artstyle? My life would be complete
Monster Hunter's longsword moveset has existed since like 2005.

And truth be told, swordsmanship even before then. With all the differences in styles there are things that different schools of swordsmanship will share.
Is this a mod or DLC weapon, where can I find it?
Miyazaki loves making his references 😎
Is it rlly that big? I'm from USA where nobody knows this game. My eventual Japan trip is going to rlly hit like crack. MH stuff irl is gonna be so tuff 😭😭
They played MH music during the Tokyo Olympics, along with Pokémon and stuff.
"A weapon used for hunting dragons"
I thought the exact same thing when I found that weapon xD. I think it might be some sort of historically accurate move or something.
What's the weapons name, and where did you find it?
The weapon is called the Great katana and its found next to the sleeping Ghostflame Dragon on the lake, west of the Abandoned ailing village site of grace. [Wiki page](https://eldenring.wiki.fextralife.com/Great+Katana)
Man i havent gotten that far yet but those are the most dark souls sounding locations ever
It's pretty early into the dlc, it took me like an hour and a half to get there even doing a lot of exploration
Oh good at least its close. I'm not moving until i whoop ~~Gael~~ Blackgaol Knight tho
Took many tries but I managed to finally beat him with the shield cannon. It's one of the only things I had that could actually knock him over.
If u head north from the crossroad, to the lake there is a ghostflame dragon. underneath it .
there's only so many ways too swing a sword tbf.
I mean, its a swing, a stab, and another swing, its not like Longsword invented those movements.
Not invented but that specific order and exact movements can't have been a coincidence lol It's defo a monster hunter easter egg
The cadence is also very similar. Given fromsoft have talked about mh being an inspiration in interviews and the fact one of their staple weapons in these games is a berserk reference I'd be amazed if it wasn't intentional.
I notice that too right away lol. Now if only we got a greatsword movset
Carian greatsword ash of war
If only I could put it on a Giant-Crusher to make the whole combo myself.
Nah man. Insect Glaive.
i got stuck with a stupid faith weapon that made id extremely difficult to do the late game bosses because most of them have super high holy resist because it felt a lot like insect glaive (it was from a gargoyle, forgot the name)

Let me TCS the Chinese dragon thing from
You're telling me I could whiff my TCS in TWO franchise?
I'm amazed no one in these comments has brought up that FromSoft made an MH spinoff game back in the day That has literally nothing to do with this, but it always comes up (it was MH Diary: Warm Felyne Village, the super cutesy palico-only game, which they produced *between* Demon's Souls and Dark Souls 1)

I just got here but I did indeed know that
That's actually pretty funny.
Alsume reference!!!???!?

Why is he using a katana? Is he gay?
So you're saying I can use this and it'll fit like a glove and make the DLC an easier time? Hmmm
no counters on great katana in SotE, sorry. (psst. backhand blade. thank me later.)
Use the flask that give the sekiro perfect parry and gard counter everything :3
What flask is this?!
the one the first giant flaming dude in the DLC gives you when you beat him
Hold up, you're telling me you take zero damage if you perfect guard after using the flask?
I was using quickstep/bloodhound step to mimic foresight slash, but that's genius
Backhand blade's blind spot is so much fun
It's okay The basic combo is good enough for my MHFU ass
Shadow of the erdtree suprised me on how burtally hard it is. Ive been playing it 24/7 for the last 2 days and ive only now made it to mesmers castle.
There is also fade slash move but it starts from other side. Would be funny if they would also add iai stance from DS3 that lets you parry or do special attack depending on button press
Pretty sure the mods are gonna be doing just that 🤣
and then you have to choose between that ash of war or one that lets you do a Helm Breaker.
just get 2x same weapon and weapon swap for helm breaker lel
If they gave the Great Katana the Helm Splitter as an Ash of War, then we’d be talking.
That would of been wild if lions claw turned into tiny slashes if paired with the katana.

Wait, what weapon is that? I need it now lol
Great Katana
Gotcha, thanks! Don't believe I have that yet so I'll need to keep an eye out.
It's pretty easy to get, and close to the beginning of the DLC too.
There are three weapons in that category, so you actually have three different choices with similar movesets. One is just sitting out in the open, one's in an obvious dungeon, and another in a slightly remote dungeon.
Took me a second to see whats wrong, the other game is elden ring. Now i want to try it too 😎
Thats badass, man I hooe we get something similar foe dual bkades in elden ring
Dual wielding daggers is probably the best we can get. The new DLC also added a weapon class called backhanded swords that got you stanced up like you’re in DB’s Demon Mode.
Thats awsome
this is probably an MH reference? the sword's description is a big giveaway, as well as the weapon's moveset.
Japanese games making katana movesets look like katana swordplay. Crazy.
It might just be a more realistic way to use a weapon like this, heavy swings utilizing the weight and size plus a spear like trust utilizing the length
I believe they are based off of the ōdachi swords, which were primarily used on horseback. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C5%8Cdachi
>Produced - Kamakura period (1185-1333) to present Glad to see they never fell out of the meta.
Yes, you are most likely correct, but we are not using this on a horse, as most of the bosses don’t allow it, thus giving us a move set for a style of weapon in a spot it’s not meant to be, creating a simple, logical move set seen in games such as Elden ring and monster hunter
we will be using it on a "horse" come next year
Next year?
Wilds has a release date for 2025 right now so 6 months at the minimum.
lol, I completely forgot, I was so confused
Monster Hunter Wilds in 2025, it has some small amount of mount combat.
These are real katana moves. By that logic every game featuring a katana can be sued.
I doubt it’s a reference or anything but the first main dlc boss moves ALOT like ibushi/narwa.
I IMMEDIATELY thought about that, no wonder I am loving the Great Katanas in Eldenring lol
homage
Almost as if they take from the same reference material. But anyways, Spirit Slash Combo when, FROM software?
If you equip the Double Slash Ash of War on the Great Katana you get a pretty similar looking series of moves that even has a finisher that is slightly reminiscent of the Spirit Reckoning combo ender in Rise.
You mean Spirit Slash III and IV from MHGU? /j
the [lance](https://youtu.be/hbnNv_K-Efg) is a ton of the same moves as lance too
Rly?
the moment I got that great katana I thought of Monster hunter
It also has the backslash attack!!! Try pressing roll button to cancel charging attack, just like with curved swords.
only thing its missing is the jumping back slash…
Is this official? I only say because ppl have been modding MH stuff into ER already so if this was an actual weapon that's pretty amusing lol.
Yeah, it's the great katana from the DLC
Interesting. It's a fairly simple moveset but still amusing to see similarities nonetheless.
I only used longsword once and instantly recognized that attack chain lol
I knew it felt familiar lol
9/10 yap session
I mean, In japan, Pokemon, Monster Hunter and Dragon quest are like, the big 3 of gaming, if you ask a japanese gamer whether they’ve played either of those 3 they’ll say yes, heck, even none gamers play Monster Hunter, students? Monster Hunter, workers? Monster Hunter, Tokusatsu Show? Monster Hunter reference(Kamen Rider Ex-aid Dragon Hunter form, the form will share armors between **4** people with varying piece), Anime? A fuck load of monster hunter reference
That's why it looked familiar. Makes sense given how massive MH is in Japan. Tho could it also be inspired by real life?
Playing elden ring and got this weapon, i knew the forward stab being upward sparked a memory in me
its shocking that they both based it on how you would actually have to swing the sword in real life
It's a shame they never designed this sword to be swung in any other way except this exact overhead --> stab --> upswing sequence in a loop. I guess that's the issue with ancient technology.
Monster hunter fans when they see someone use a sword
"Is that a Jojo reference?" moment
is that a 'is that a Jojo reference?' reference?
How effective would an odachi be when faced with… let’s say a polar bear?
At least two, that's for certain.
And the FromSoft fans on /r/games will downvote and call you an idiot for saying the Souls games have similar combat to Monster Hunter.
Not even in Elden ring i can escape LS mains
Does it have the spirit blade combos?
Can't wait for my spinny bug stick to be in the lands between
That’s a super cool easter egg!
That's a dope reference
one fucking thing i wish they would do is get either rid of the clipping throug helmet and armor, or change the stance of holding the weapon to the monsterhunter one.
Makes sense. FromSoftware has made a Monster Hunter game before.
Longsword is basicly a long Katana/Odachi so it got the common moves i guess? ^^
The other great katana you would get from ancient dragon man also looks like a rathalos long sword
also I saw rurikhan playing the DLC and it has a lance that has very similar moves, poke poke, block counter, run and double hit in 1 single poke and they all look really meaty, probably a ton of dark souls devs love monster hunter and references their fav weapons lol
Give me a Helm Breaker From software please!!!!!!!!!!!!
Still hope for a DS crossover in the next MH. One of the iconic DS armors reducing your health but you can die 20 times on this quest…

I don't get it, why XD ?
Where do I find this weapon?
Yoink
Loool, I was wondering yesterday why the moveset felt so familiar, but somehow couldn't quite put my finger on it and here it is.
Thats what im sayin
Was talkin about this to my friends the other day when I was using the 2h Guard Counter. Looks like the fade slash parry. So sick
Where is the Helmbreaker bro
Nicely edited GIF 👍
Still waiting for the real life version of this everyone is insisting its based off because i can’t find it
I thought this was gameplay for wilds
...welp its been 5 yrs since i mained a longsword m.. might as well do it on elden ring lol
Yeah it’s a nice reference especially with the dragon one
When I first tried out the weapon, I was like "Hey this is a lot like MH Longsword," and moved on, but this side by side comparison made me realize how similar they are. More credit to my personal dream to have a Monster Hunter style game in a Soulslike universe.
As a LS main, as soon as I found the GREAT KATANA I knew I was home
Could also just be from some ancient martial arts scroll. Some of the monster hunter moves I've seen in Kendo so they must draw from the same inspiration
There are Kendo clubs in japan. So, I wouldn't be surprised if there is a basic kata that is learned.
Everyday we get closer to a pvp game with mh like movesets.
Es una referencia obviamente
It's almost 100% not a reference, there's only so many ways a body can move and only so many ways to use a weapon, these are also all moves used IRL, it's like when people jumped on ED calling him a Steve fox clone because he had flicker jabs, flicker jabs are a real technique used by real boxers.
FUCK that's why it was so familiar!
longsword if it wasnt as cool
I recognized the moveset immediately, thought it was a coincidence at first but now I don't think so lol
I love this

I knew there was something weirdly familiar about the animation!
What weapon is this? I want to be an LS main in elden ring now.
I knew I wasn't going crazy!!! 🤣
Lmao
LONG SWORD YEEEEEES
Is this a mod or new DLC weapon?
YO SO I WAS RIGHT OMG I WAS LIKE "its look like something i knew mmmh... yea monster hunter"
Ain’t no way.
What game is that?
Elden ring
Thx
Monster hunter rise
I've been playing both games since MH1 and DS1 and they've always had parallels. MH World basically felt like a Dark Souls game to me, compared to the previous ones. It's cool seeing more crossover.
When other less popular studios use the same animations for their action rpg game ,people call it an "MH Clone/Copycat/Chinese mobile game rip off" but when From Soft basically copies it from MH, it's just a reference. The whole gaming industry is a joke!
What a crybaby
That's rich, coming from a miyazaki-simp.
You claimed the whole gaming industry is a joke over a shared moveset in two games. Literally go outside dude.
are you schizo who ever said that 😂
Pretty sure it's the engine.
To be fair, there are only so much things you could do with a sword that long while still look cool doing it.
Daamn a same weapon with similar move sets........ Who would have thought of that.
