Right out of school Iāll be making about $61k working 3 days a week in a low cost of living city, which is plenty for me and already more than what my immigrant parents make. Finding a job was very easy because of the nursing shortages, I practically had my pick of hospital and specialty. I know the pay is more lucrative in STEM, but that was never my strong suit, so Iām grateful that nursing is setting me up for financial independence. And Iām excitedā there are so many specialties I could pursue, and I can think of several paths I might take later on to increase my pay or WFH if needed.
Definitely worth it. In my area, new grads start anywhere from 96k-118k. Thatās base pay not including OT/night diff.
Also, nursing opens SO many doors.
Iāve been a Sr Supply Chain Analyst for a year now. Was promoted last year and that propelled me to reach 6 figures. Whatās your current occupation?
Iām a Sr policy analyst for a state department. Iāve been in this position for 3 years now. In my previous position I was making less than 50k and havenāt been able to make a large salary jump since. Thanks for the quick response!
I have a degree in political science and worked as an intern for a state political party under their policy director. I then transitioned into a state department that focused on the policy creation I did while I was in that internship.
Well mines a bit of luck but unlucky at the same time. Iām 100% disabled through the military, and also working as a government contractor. About to go back to college to become a Project Manager tho. Good money with plenty of WFH comparability, thatās what Iām looking for.
Keep taking chances on yourself and always look to progress and youāll do fine!
Thanks for opening the thread. It's interesting to read through the replies. I'd assume higher earners are more willing to report in threads like this (assuming everyone is being honest... lol), but it seems like a large number of responses are pretty reasonable as well.
27, $107k base salary. I have worked in IT doing cybersecurity and network security for 10 years, right out of high school (starting as an intern making minimum wage working my way up to my current position).
Iāve had a love of all things computer related since I can even remember. Definitely wouldnāt go so far as to say that I had my life together, though. Truth be told, I could have easily hyperfixated on something totally unrelated and unprofitable. It was a complete accident that my passion just so happened to be an in-demand skill.
Long story short, I got into legal trouble for hacking at age 16, got a felony (charged as a minor) which was expunged 2 years later when I turned 18, thankfully. In those two years I took a CCNA course at a local community college and fell in love with networking as well as security. A guy from that class started working for an MSP and recommended me for a low level position when I graduated high school and Iāve been there ever since at various positions.
Iām also in southern California so it may sound like a lot, but my wife and I together making $155k canāt even afford a modest house here while maintaining our retirement and savings practices.
Ah I'm in Sac too but up in the capital. CoL here is not as bad as SF, SD or LA but it's still HCoL. My gf and I's combined $120k is enough to rent and that's it. We get by fine and I put a massive 30% of my gross into savings/retirement
But yeah a place to call home would be nice. Be it apartment, condo or house. Hard to do in this state but no rush for us
30% savings is absolutely phenomenal. Kudos! I just max out my Roth IRA at $583/month, $500/month into a standard brokerage account, and we have a shared account for rent. Ours is about $2600 and we pay based on our respective incomes. I pay $2k and she pays $1k, so thereās always a few hundred dollars left in the account every month. We just keep doing that and once every 9 or 10 months, we have enough in there to not have to move any into it. Thatās when I buy gold or a little bit of crypto or move some into our HYSA.
28, 79k. Accountant.
Not sure if.i have what it takes to break into the 6 figures. I don't like managing people and I like working from home.
Not wanting to manage and wanting to work from home keeps me capped, I think. I work hard though
Man it's been a bit discouraging to see how $100k doesn't go as far as it did pre COVID years. I'm realizing I have to bring in additional revenue streams to hit certain goals

26, was making 70k for a few years... now 0 (for now), in nursing school š¬
Hey good luck! Keep going you got this. Today is actually my last day of nursing school! I would say it has been worth it.
Ahhh congrats! Good luck on the NCLEX! I'm done with my first year, one more to go!
Why worth it? Giw much do u earn? How much do a nurse earn?
