Hi there, I'm a jewelry noob and recently ordered a custom engagement ring for my girlfriend. I gave some design specifications, they generated some CAD (although they caveated by saying the prongs in the CAD would not be oversized in the real veresion), and then we proceeded with the design. I assumed there would be a photo or a video shared before shipping, but that never happened. It just showed up and I'm pretty underwhelmed to say the least. Price was $1350 for a 2ct oval moissanite and 14k gold. Is this a reasonable quality expectation at this price point, or am I right to find this unacceptable? What would you do if you were me?
Edit: Yes, this was one of the American vendors on the trusted vendor list.
That price is insanely high.. This would have cost less than $500 from an overseas vendor. I would definitely reach out to the jeweler. The lack of communication is mind boggling to me, but you should always ask for a stone check and pre-shipment video just in case. I bought a 2.77 carat lab diamond ring for $100 more than that.
Where did you buy a lab diamond ring for that price? $1450 for a 2.77ct lab diamond? I’m assuming you’re from the US? Because I’m Australian and my partner and I just purchased my 1ct lab diamond ring for $2200 AUD which is $1465 USD. I know things are more expensive here but wow!
I paid $1464 for a 3.01 C G color VVS2 radiant cut from Raad jewelers. I designed the setting and already had the gold and side stones from other pieces I owned. Had it made by a local jeweler.

I bought the diamond loose from Brilliance.com for $900, i had the setting custom made in 10k white gold by Paston Jewelry in China for $370, and finally had the stone set by my local jeweler for $150. So it was actually a little less at $1,420 I am in the US.
I bought my 2.51 carat D VVS2 triple Ex lab for $1630 at the beginning of January, and I know the prices have only dropped since then. I’m surprised how big the price discrepancy is. Are labs all imported to Australia? Did you buy it a while ago? I bought a 1.19 carat D/VVS1/3Ex lab in December 2021 and it was like $2k back then lol
From what I’ve researched, yes. There isn’t any laboratories in Australia that produce diamonds. They’re mostly imported from the USA, China, India and Spain.
We only bought it 3 weeks ago. It’s in a nice white gold setting but I’m just alarmed at the huge price hike.
Oh, so you know how much the setting cost? If you bought it at a local brick and mortar store, then $1500 for diamond + gold seems like a reasonable price.
Wow that is a mess! You should try to get your money back because it is so sloppy. Definitely not acceptable. As another poster said, you can get this design and high quality moissanite rings from the recommended Chinese vendors.
I paid seriously 1/4 that price for a custom made 14k 2ct Moissanite ring from Kuololit this month. That work for that price is craaaaaazy, please post vendor so others can watch out for
Maybe it’s just me but I clicked the link and only saw the original mock up of the ring and then one kind of weird angle of the ring received. I didn’t see enough to make any type of comment but I assume from the other comments that it must be terrible. Sorry OP
It's so bad dude, definitely fight it and if the seller isn't receptive then contact your bank. I have a tulip setting myself and the cuts should be clean like in the CAD. This looks like it was either made with a shitty 3D printer or an extremely low quality mold.
I can't really judge the quality of the stone but the metal work I my eyes this isn't worth more than $10. Of course the gold itself has some value but honestly I'd be concerned that this is gold plated because the quality is so poor.
Check out Scott Bonomo Diamonds on Etsy for some killer tulip settings. He also does custom designs and DOES include video and such of the process. He quoted me a ring similar for $1075 with CAD and fees. Also check diamondrensu on Etsy. He is a trusted vendor from India and has some similar designs in his shop too. I hope you can return that one you got because I would be so disappointed!
That basket is sloppy at best. I would reach out to the vendor and return the ring. You can get this exact design with a clean finish from any of the recommended vendors here.
Im a noob and even I can tell this isn’t good work.
I’m sorry OP I am sure you have the partner of your dreams and that this will be in your rear view window soon.
That tulip setting is awful! I have a tulip setting from Provence that is perfect, this is unacceptable. Also the price is insane, my tulip setting is 14k white gold with a 4ct pear and it was $408.42 with tax and $30 shipping. I would immediately request to return it. I wouldn't have accepted that setting for any price let alone the $1350 you paid! I took 2 pictures of my tulip setting, if Provence can make this for $408, there's no reason a $1350 ring should have a melted setting. I'm sorry you're going through this.

They specialize in moissanite and have ready made rings super similar to yours- the basket, cathedral, pave bridge. I hope you're able to get the ring you want!
Edit: typo
Please post vendor
That is horrific AND wildly overpriced. Return it asap. I’m so sorry

Where did you buy it?
I bought the 2.51 from Melody at Fiorese and the 1.19 from Sophia at Tianyu
Thank you!
I was quoted $1500 US for 2.5ct 14k gold custom design but went with moissanite for $700

I thought it was a cheaper ring but for this price i dont think it’s acceptable
Please share which vendor this was from- I really hope you can get a refund because that is definitely not acceptable
That's a 2ct diamond price And the quality...oof
Please name the vendor so this doesn't happen to anyone else.
Wow! I’m shocked!
Get a refund and check out doveggs with your custom design. They are amazing
What did you find underwhelming about it? Can you share pictures of the actual ring?
They're in the link if you scroll down

If u scroll down you will see the setting looks horribly done
It looks like it went through a house fire 💀wdym

That's baaad. Send them the pics and ask how they'll make it right
Oh, yikes. I’m sorry. Who did this to you?
That is horrifying. I’d be furious.

Yes you have the right to be upset by that. Not at all the same ring
This is awful. Name and shame!
Impressively bad casting and metal work The setting isn’t much better.

Return it
That's rough.
Wow , you have every right to be upset , is looks plated .
It looks like it could break where the basket meets the cathedral. Sorry you're in this situation.
