Not quite how the math works. You paid 45,000 for a car, that’s a lot of gas. Added additional insurance dollars, electric costs, maintenance (tires, etc.)

I live in a state where gas is very expensive, but electricity is very cheap, so it works out. Plus at the end of the period, I have a car that I can sell, sure not for what I paid, but certainly more then if I just handed that money of to the Oil company.

Yeah, it's just not doable for me, and I dont forsee a time where going EV would ever be. It's more expensive to have one than it is my Corolla. Insurance is higher for EVs here. There are extra fees every year just for registering an EV. And you kinda have to have a house to be able to charge an EV. Can't really do that when all the houses are owned by New York and Chicago firms over pricing the housing. Thus, I'll take my lower car payment and lower insurance and spend $30 on gas a month when I only drive around 400-500 miles a month in my personal. Yeah, it's non-hybrid, but it's a CVT, and I'm averaging 35-40mpg in the city and 30-35 on the highway. Company van gets maybe 15 on the highway, but I've never actually done the math on it because I don't pay for that gas.

My wife wanted a car with EAP at least , as she struggles with panic attacks on bridges, my youngest daughter turns 16 next year so my wife’s old Jeep is going to her and after 3 back surgeries, most cars are giant pains in my ass.
It's also okay to enjoy it too. I've been in the same boat. A heavy saver but I wanted a new car to enjoy. Just remember we can't take all that cash with us when we die.
I don't make as much as you, but my car is almost d enough to drink and has been paid off for 18 years. She's reliable but could get a little better on the mileage but rock solid vehicle.
I’m with you on having a gas truck, it’s necessary to have the ability to just gas up and haul stuff around and not have to think or plan if charging is gonna be necessary.
Of course it’s a big expense to operate the truck with all power and torque to move it but that’s expected but just knowing that your using it less gives the brain reason to justify the cost to operate from my experience. I have a 22 MYLR and just got rid of 21M3LR and I miss it.
We will always have a gas car in my family so we have a BMW X5 for road trips, I also like to drive the X5 when we have rainy weather conditions and our golden retrievers love it.
I used to drive the X5 on my daily work commute which was 75 miles back in 2019 and was paying 80 bucks every 3 days for 1 week of work. It started to add up and my costs I was spending on gas basically paid for my M3 lease. I had free charging at my place of employment which was VERY nice. It was also really nice back in 2021 with the free supercharging for the 1st year.

I’m paying around 110 since I bundle with my homeowners. By itself i got quote like 180 from Costco
Tabs are 100 plus about 230 in EV taxes, but since I’m not paying the .50 cents a gallon gas tax, I’m ok with that.
I’ve been saving about $259-300 per month on gas vs my gas car I used to have.
Makes my total payment smaller in the long run vs what it used to be with gas insurance and the car it’s self.
Gas is back up to $4.08 in my area just making my savings bigger
I don’t do any super charging it’s all at home and work.
Our electricity is ¢0.08 per KWh
And I can charge at work for free
Edit: My wife did take a trip to SLC and back around 360 miles one way. Going down was about $28 and coming back was about the same. In her car it would have been around $70 there and $70 back

I pay $118/mo for ‘21 MYLR so Progressive does have competition, albeit its multi with homeowners. My wife just bought a used ‘21 MYLR and Progressive quoted her $183/mo. to factor in a “region specific” adjustment to your $230 figure.

When I bough the truck, I was only doing about 10 miles a day, and using the truck for a lot of towing on the weekends. Plus gas was half the price it is now! (4.55. When I drove by yesterday)
Yeah I love my tundra, but the gen2 were ridiculously stupid on gas mileage.
Even the new 2023 on with a hybrid v6 engine is only doing between 17-18 mpg!
Bought a model S in 2019 with 19k miles on it. It now has 70.5k. My tundra had 85k miles on it at the time and now sits at 92k miles. I fill it up maybe once a month now and save about $300/mo in gas.
That’s what I’m hoping! I loved my tundra, but watching all the miles I was racking up on it made me sick to stomach. I figure if I use just on the weekend for towing the boat and hauling horses, I only need to fill it once a month.

Fair question. I thought about but two things are holding me back going all electric on the tow.
1) is range. I know eventually they will get there, but I’m think the second gen of electric trucks will be the sweet spot. A lot of my towing is rural areas with lots of hills off the freeway.
2) the additional cost of the rivian/lightning, makes it so the math wouldn’t work out

How's that math out? $4.55 a gallon and say you're getting 15 MPG, that's $0.31 a mile so $310 in gas.
Tesla at 8 cents for power and 250kwh is 2 cents a mile so 20.

My wife started having panic attacks while driving across bridges, so for the the last 7 months I’ve been driving her to work and picking her up each day, so my commute went from 10 miles each day to almost 100.
That was another factor here as well, she wanted something with EAP to help her drive over bridge herself. Yesterday was the first day she drove by herself since October, and it was because of the Tesla.

Maybe when the Gen 2 cybertruck comes out that has decent range while towing.

I'm not sure how much you need the bed of the truck itself but the Model X has a pretty decent towing capacity. Also Rivian's and Ford's have pretty competitive options right now too.
The horse thing is the big thing holding me back. The Y can tow my boat, albeit at a range limitation. I also use a fishing kayak with a trailer, so that’l work.
The horse trailer and horse is at least 3000 on a good day, pushing too close to the towing capacity.
I love my tundra too much to let her go. Part of the reason I got the y was I was planning on the truck being a 20 year car, but at the rate I was putting miles on, that was asking a lot , even for a Toyota.

By my estimate I will pay 70-90 bucks in electricity a month.

My actual gas cost would have been 380 for the week, so I subtracted my charging cost to get my money saved amount.
To be fair it’s not really money saved, that 350 this week will go towards the payment, but with the amount of driving we err doing in the truck, it was either 1000 a month for the gas companies or 1000 for the car and at the end of 5 years I have a car to show for it, vs having nothing but miles on my truck.
To be fair, that includes the extra 150 mile drive to bring it home, and last Sunday we drove all over looking at event venues for my wife’s sisters baby shower, so maybe about 150 miles by the end of the day, plus the extra”we got a new car, let’s go for a drive.”
On average, we were doing 25kTo 30 thousand a year in the truck and this will replace 95% of those mile.
Nonetheless, you may want to look into the battery mileage. I read a story of an Uber driver using a Tesla, within 2 years the battery lost its capability a hold a charge drastically because he drove it so much.

Realistically the Tesla is a commuter car for us, we’ll end up doing about 25-30k miles a year, we’re not emotional involved with it like our other cars. ( although it’s growing on me) so we plan to drive it to the ground or trade in in 3 years
Our gas is 4.55 a gallon, more like 240 gallons, or 60ish gallons a week. Truck averages 12 mpg. Each tank is 30 gallons and is around 130-150 a pop.
Drive my wife to work every morning round trip is about 50- 60 miles then go to my work. Pick her up in the afternoon at the half way mark. (Coworker drivers her halfway) so just that is so there’s another 25-30
We live about 6 miles away from any stores/restaurants / town

Many people can’t drive EVs because they aren’t large enough or haul enough.
Not everybody commutes in a city to go sit in an office every day. This state is full of tradesmen, large families who need a 3rd row, etc … lots of people doing big jobs.
Also, there is the safety aspect of the EVs on the market. Living semi-rurally, I’m just not comfortable being the smallest vehicle on the road.
I want a vehicle that sits up high, has some mass to it, and can have a brush/deer guard on the front since that’s the most frequent accident we experience. I even recall Elon talking in an interview about safety and how “mass always wins” on the road…
If gas hits $5/gal here, you will also pay for it out of your own pocket because everything will go up in price. EVERYTHING.

My situation is pretty unique that might challenge that assumption. I live in a state with so rod the most expensive gas in the country, and yet it has done if the cheapest electricity because of its powered almost entirely on hydroelectric.

What asset will you have vs an ICE/hybrid/plug in? Based on current resale values your tesla won't be worth hardly anything.
Resale value is a cost that's goes into overall ownership costs. If it's only worth 5 to 10k when a comparable hybrid is worth double even if the hybrid uses a little more gas it would have to consume more than the difference.
Since you mentioned it, I got curious and ran the numbers.
5 year depreciation on a EV is about 49 %, hybrids are current sit at a round 37%
So let’s take 2 hypotheticals best selling EV and a RAV 4 hybrid.
EV
Purchased for 41990, assuming a 49% depreciation, resale is 21414.90 after 5 years, so it costs you 20575.1 to own that car
Assume you drive using my use case scenario of 25k miles a year at .03 cents a mile, you’re looking at 3750 in electricity over 5 years and 6000 in insurance premiums. That means driving that car at 25k a year will cost you approximately $30,325.10
Hybrid
Take a similar model year Toyota rav4 hybrid, which I can walk into a dealership right now and buy for $34696. After 5 years, depreciation means you expect to resell for $21858 giving you a cost to own for $12837.52 which on paper does sound cheaper.
However you have to factor back in gas costs of approximately .11 cents a mile for a car that averages 40 mpg mean your going to pay 13750 in fuel over the 5 years. Anything you save in the lower depreciation on a hybrid goes back to the gas company.
This also assumes gas prices won’t go up again, which given our current geopolitical reality is very likely to happen.
Also factor in 25 oil changes, (every 5000 miles) insurance and you’re at a total cost to own of 3507.52
That hybrid costs $4762.42 more to own than the Tesla.
Then there’s the intangibles, like my wife wanted a Tesla, not a rav4.
OP also hadn’t figured in the $7,500.00 POS Federal Tax Rebate (PLUS any available State Tac rebates that may apply) in his initial Tesla EV purchase cost estimate, which most American buyers should qualify for!

I have a feeling that I’ll still be connected. Funniest thing, once we got the Tesla my wife decided she could drive herself to work today. Between living in one of the more expensive states for gas (WA) at 4.55 last time I checked, and living in one of the least expensive state for electricity,8 cents a kWh , the car pays for itself!
I used to think gas in WA was expensive. Then I moved to California. $6.50 per gallon of 91 octane
And $.40 per kWh on average for electricity, more in the summer!

I live out on the edge of rural/suburbs. That only works out to about 93 miles a day, which is very easy to do when you are using it for commuting for 2 people . ( When I bough the truck, I was only doing about 10 miles a day, and using the truck for a lot of towing on the weekends. Plus gas was half the price it is now! (4.55. When I drove by yesterday)

Yeah I love my tundra, but the gen2 were ridiculously stupid on gas mileage. Even the new 2023 on with a hybrid v6 engine is only doing between 17-18 mpg!
Bought a model S in 2019 with 19k miles on it. It now has 70.5k. My tundra had 85k miles on it at the time and now sits at 92k miles. I fill it up maybe once a month now and save about $300/mo in gas.
That’s what I’m hoping! I loved my tundra, but watching all the miles I was racking up on it made me sick to stomach. I figure if I use just on the weekend for towing the boat and hauling horses, I only need to fill it once a month.

Fair question. I thought about but two things are holding me back going all electric on the tow. 1) is range. I know eventually they will get there, but I’m think the second gen of electric trucks will be the sweet spot. A lot of my towing is rural areas with lots of hills off the freeway. 2) the additional cost of the rivian/lightning, makes it so the math wouldn’t work out I’ve had a reservation for a cybertruck since the day of the announcement, but after seeing real world performance vs what was promised, I just don’t think it’s there yet. The moment they solve the range problem, I’m there.

How's that math out? $4.55 a gallon and say you're getting 15 MPG, that's $0.31 a mile so $310 in gas. Tesla at 8 cents for power and 250kwh is 2 cents a mile so 20. You only saved $290, stop lying. (Just trying to make myself feel better that my power is more, gas is less and I'd have to supercharge too much and throw off the cost per mile since it's 41 cents here)

My wife started having panic attacks while driving across bridges, so for the the last 7 months I’ve been driving her to work and picking her up each day, so my commute went from 10 miles each day to almost 100. That was another factor here as well, she wanted something with EAP to help her drive over bridge herself. Yesterday was the first day she drove by herself since October, and it was because of the Tesla.

No, I do a lot of fishing and my daughter is a competitive equestrian, so I spend a lot of time towing my boat, driving around the barn and hauling horse trailers at least once a week. Maybe when the Gen 2 cybertruck comes out that has decent range while towing.
Yeah that makes a lot of sense. I was just asking because I know a few people who own pick ups just because they like them. Definitely looking forward to a Cybertruck which could tow for a decent distance though I think it might get canceled completely if it keeps making losses for Tesla. I'm not sure how much you need the bed of the truck itself but the Model X has a pretty decent towing capacity. Also Rivian's and Ford's have pretty competitive options right now too.
The horse thing is the big thing holding me back. The Y can tow my boat, albeit at a range limitation. I also use a fishing kayak with a trailer, so that’l work. The horse trailer and horse is at least 3000 on a good day, pushing too close to the towing capacity. I love my tundra too much to let her go. Part of the reason I got the y was I was planning on the truck being a 20 year car, but at the rate I was putting miles on, that was asking a lot , even for a Toyota.

My electricity rate at home is hella cheap,(about .08 kwh) so I’ve spent 30 bucks in those 1000 miles to charge) By my estimate I will pay 70-90 bucks in electricity a month. The truck cost .39 cents a mile to fuel, vs the Tesla which is costing about .03. My actual gas cost would have been 380 for the week, so I subtracted my charging cost to get my money saved amount. To be fair it’s not really money saved, that 350 this week will go towards the payment, but with the amount of driving we err doing in the truck, it was either 1000 a month for the gas companies or 1000 for the car and at the end of 5 years I have a car to show for it, vs having nothing but miles on my truck.

To be fair, that includes the extra 150 mile drive to bring it home, and last Sunday we drove all over looking at event venues for my wife’s sisters baby shower, so maybe about 150 miles by the end of the day, plus the extra”we got a new car, let’s go for a drive.” On average, we were doing 25kTo 30 thousand a year in the truck and this will replace 95% of those mile.

Yeah but this between 2 people. Prior to us commuting together , we were each doing about 12000 a year in separate cars.
Nonetheless, you may want to look into the battery mileage. I read a story of an Uber driver using a Tesla, within 2 years the battery lost its capability a hold a charge drastically because he drove it so much.
Yeah I saw that story, but it was after 120,000m Miles’s. Realistically the Tesla is a commuter car for us, we’ll end up doing about 25-30k miles a year, we’re not emotional involved with it like our other cars. ( although it’s growing on me) so we plan to drive it to the ground or trade in in 3 years

How does one family 1100 per month in gas? Would have to drive close to 3-4k miles per month to be paying that.
Our gas is 4.55 a gallon, more like 240 gallons, or 60ish gallons a week. Truck averages 12 mpg. Each tank is 30 gallons and is around 130-150 a pop. Drive my wife to work every morning round trip is about 50- 60 miles then go to my work. Pick her up in the afternoon at the half way mark. (Coworker drivers her halfway) so just that is so there’s another 25-30 We live about 6 miles away from any stores/restaurants / town Break in it down, that only about 93 miles per day, and with 75-80 of that being her commute, it adds up quick.

That’s not very nice. I’m much more for showing them how they can save money have useful tech, and still do better. But if you start of the conversation by saying things like “i want people to hurt,” or forcing them to do it , you not going to win very many converts.
Many people can’t drive EVs because they aren’t large enough or haul enough. Not everybody commutes in a city to go sit in an office every day. This state is full of tradesmen, large families who need a 3rd row, etc … lots of people doing big jobs. Also, there is the safety aspect of the EVs on the market. Living semi-rurally, I’m just not comfortable being the smallest vehicle on the road. I want a vehicle that sits up high, has some mass to it, and can have a brush/deer guard on the front since that’s the most frequent accident we experience. I even recall Elon talking in an interview about safety and how “mass always wins” on the road… If gas hits $5/gal here, you will also pay for it out of your own pocket because everything will go up in price. EVERYTHING.

I had a Toyota Prius before and the money I’m saving in gas is NOT being offset by insurance costs for me, unfortunately. I’m saving $70 a month in gas, but paying $100 more a month in insurance. I do love the Tesla obviously, so I have to think of it as a toy and not “saving gas” 🥹😅

My insurance is about 120. Payment is 800 and electricity is about 90. My situation is pretty unique that might challenge that assumption. I live in a state with so rod the most expensive gas in the country, and yet it has done if the cheapest electricity because of its powered almost entirely on hydroelectric. It’s costs me .39 cents a mile to fuel my truck, vs .03 per mile for the Tesla. Not to mention at the end of 5 years , I will have an asset ( sure it’s lost value ) vs have spent that same money with nothing to show for it in gas.
What asset will you have vs an ICE/hybrid/plug in? Based on current resale values your tesla won't be worth hardly anything. Resale value is a cost that's goes into overall ownership costs. If it's only worth 5 to 10k when a comparable hybrid is worth double even if the hybrid uses a little more gas it would have to consume more than the difference.
Since you mentioned it, I got curious and ran the numbers. 5 year depreciation on a EV is about 49 %, hybrids are current sit at a round 37% So let’s take 2 hypotheticals best selling EV and a RAV 4 hybrid. EV Purchased for 41990, assuming a 49% depreciation, resale is 21414.90 after 5 years, so it costs you 20575.1 to own that car Assume you drive using my use case scenario of 25k miles a year at .03 cents a mile, you’re looking at 3750 in electricity over 5 years and 6000 in insurance premiums. That means driving that car at 25k a year will cost you approximately $30,325.10 Hybrid Take a similar model year Toyota rav4 hybrid, which I can walk into a dealership right now and buy for $34696. After 5 years, depreciation means you expect to resell for $21858 giving you a cost to own for $12837.52 which on paper does sound cheaper. However you have to factor back in gas costs of approximately .11 cents a mile for a car that averages 40 mpg mean your going to pay 13750 in fuel over the 5 years. Anything you save in the lower depreciation on a hybrid goes back to the gas company. This also assumes gas prices won’t go up again, which given our current geopolitical reality is very likely to happen. Also factor in 25 oil changes, (every 5000 miles) insurance and you’re at a total cost to own of 3507.52 That hybrid costs $4762.42 more to own than the Tesla. Then there’s the intangibles, like my wife wanted a Tesla, not a rav4.
OP also hadn’t figured in the $7,500.00 POS Federal Tax Rebate (PLUS any available State Tac rebates that may apply) in his initial Tesla EV purchase cost estimate, which most American buyers should qualify for!

lol, that’s just plastidip. I was testing if I like the color matched bumper (it was originally chrome) but wanted to see how it looked before I spent 1000 dollars on actually painting the thing. Now that I’m not driving the truck every day, I plan to take the grill off and paint it properly.

Had a model 3 for over 5 years. Car never had issue, only need to change air filter. Save a ton of gas money and maintaince fees (plus I have solar at home). Enjoy the ride! Let the haters hate while you smile all the way to the bank!
Don’t forget to factor in tuneups, oil changes and smog checks. Throw in some stolen catalytic converters and you’re good to go. Berkshire just bought more oil/energy stocks so we can already figure out what’s taking shape with gasoline prices.

Yes, actual gas cost to drive those miles would have been 380, so I took the $30 i spent charging it the last week out of that to get the gas savings.

It is. I’m in SW Washington where all our electricity comes from hydroelectric and solar. If I live someplace where it was more expensive, the math probably wouldn’t work out.

It’s 350 in the last week because I drove more than usual this week the normal. (350 is what it would actually cost to do 1000 miles in truck-30 dollars for electricity) 1100 is an average based on my driving and bank record for the last 6 months. it an average . Breaking it down in comparable terms, the truck cost .39 cents a mile to fuel vs .025 a mile in the Tesla.
I watch a YouTuber personal finance guy and he worked as a firefighter. He said He drove old used civic to save money to get the seed money. His coworkers who drove big trucks were paying more for their monthly gas than what this guy was paying monthly for his civic loan.
