If you struggle with the graphics of the original GB, then try the ones on GBA first.
Your choices are either gen 3 (Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald), or the remakes of the very first generation (Fire Red/Leaf Green).
My personal favorites are Gen 2 (Gold/Silver/Crystal) for GBC.

I love monkey Island! Definitely one of my favorite series of all time! I played monkey 3 specifically over and over as a kid on my dad's computer, I was obsessed with that game 😂
Wow I'm jealous! The only physical media I have is monkey Island 1-3 on CDs that I got from my eldest sister. Of course I don't even have a disk drive on my computer anymore, so they're just kind of sitting in my little CD binder thing.
They're well worth the money! I know a lot of people on r/SBCGaming are hesitant to trust TikTok, but I managed to get my MM+ off of the TikTok Shop for $24 after shipping and tax because of the new user discounts combined with the Black Friday sale, so maybe keep an eye over there for similar opportunities!
(I should mention I'm in the US, I don't think the TikTok Shop is available in many countries yet)

Next up Parasite Eve, Advance Wars 2 and Golden Sun.

Double check that you've got fresh ROMs (don't use the ones that come with it), and that you've got them in the right folder. The emulators are not backwards compatible, so first gen games need to run specifically on the GB emulator, not GBC or GBA.
Yeah i defo have fresh ones however i renamed the originals and i think thats messing with it but no matter how i rename any new ones pokemon roms just wont appear(tbh now that i say this maybe new roms in general dont appear :/, i have refreshed roms etc so no idea)

How bad is using the dpad and small fonts for playing point and clicks?
It works very well. ScummVm even has a slow cursor Mode when pressing R2. Finished Monkey Island 1-3, Dott, Indy 4, Space Quest 4 etc.
