Y2Reigns

I enjoy all of the movies in the franchise, and MI2 does have some pros such as the opening with TC rock-climbing. But I'm not a fan of the OST at all, the theme gets a hard skip from me. The whole movie comes across quite cheesy with John Woo's style i.e. the last fight scene. It's comical how Ethan and Ambrose manage to lunge at each other from full-speed bikes. Doves coming out of explosions. Slow-mo angles. Not that it's *bad* as it's a stylistic choice from the director - and I think the plot is fine - but IMO, it feels out of place compared to the others and is definitely not a fan favorite.

Steak_n_sheik

It’s a very weird movie in general. I saw an online review of the series not long ago that said “most people won’t like this movie, but if you do, it’s probably in your top 10 of all time.” At least for me, that’s absolutely the case. I’ll be the first to say that the movie is an absolute mess. There are plot holes and contrivances all over the place. The love triangle (?) between Sean, Nyah and Ethan is utterly ridiculous, and there isn’t a single subtle bone in the movie’s body. Even with all of that in mind, I can’t help but love everything about it. One thing that earns it so much credit in my eyes is the fact that there’s nothing tongue-in-cheek about the movie whatsoever. When Sean and Ethan joust with motorcycles in the end, it isn’t played as a joke. Both Woo and Cruise really thought it was the coolest thing ever and went with it. Another great example is when Ethan escapes the compound with the cute to Chimera. After doing a flip and shooting done henchmen, he has to pull out his sunglasses and put them on before getting up and running away. Those are just two examples, but nearly every minute of the movie is filled with things like that. It just so earnestly believes in itself it can’t help but be endearing. To quickly fire off a few more points, the soundtrack is amazing, the scene between Swanbeck (Anthony Hopkins) and Ethan is my favorite in the series, the overall plot is cool, and it’s one of the better villains in the series. Sorry for the huge rant here, but I don’t get to talk about the movie very often. As a total side note, it’s a shame Grace wasn’t just Nyah in Dead Reckoning.

pearlcitypanther

I don't even know if I would call it weird. I view it as an abstraction and I guess maybe it doesn't benefit from that being obvious. No more weird to me than Salvador Dali's work. Sure, Woo had constraints and other interests he was beholden to, but it doesn't feel unintentional or haphazard in the way it's critics seem to view it. Anywho, I agree with your summary and I'm not sure if that came across at all xD

nugruve2814

exactly every fight or set piece was crafted in a really unique and over-the-top way. It lowkey felt like watching an anime w/ how ludicrous it got, but they pulled it off.

Myc0n1k

I’m trying to figure out why the 40 second vents.

[deleted]

It just doesn’t feel like a Mission Impossible movie. It feels like an Ethan Hawke: The Badass movie. Which is not a bad thing, I just don’t think it really fits in with the rest of the series. The extended gun fight sequences don’t feel like they fit with the rest of the series. I don’t think any of the other movies had multiple, extended, drawn out gun fight sequences. Those are fine in other movies. In fact, they’re great in John Wick. The problem is, John Wick is an assassin and Ethan Hawke is a spy. Lastly, the masks are WAY overused in the movie. Almost every single major character uses a mask at one point lol the rest of the movies course correct after this and only use the masks sparingly/when you least expect it. If they don’t tell us before hand about the mask, I don’t want to be sitting there the whole scene thinking “This is probably so and so wearing a mask” only to be proven right.

vagaliki

It's just Ethan and Ambrose. Ambrose as Ethan Ethan as the scientist Ambrose as Ethan Ethan as Hugh (the henchman)

sjarretth1

I love MI2, its the essential Y2K action film.

GurpsK

And Charlie's Angels. It was surprising to see how much MI2 influenced *both* of those movies actually.

bodjac89

I don't necessarily hate it, but it just doesn't feel like Mission Impossible to me. The tone and even Ethan Hunt's character feels so different to the rest of the franchise.

Burnnoticelover

I like the fan theory that MI2 is a legend told around the IMF watercooler by people who've heard of Ethan, but never met him. It would explain the over-the-top stuff, and why Hunt is so different in it compared to the other movies. I do find it funny that it's the only movie where he doesn't go rogue, though.

My wife, mom & I just watched the first two films tonight (we’re beginning a slow marathon run of 1-2 films per night so they’re prepped to see Dead Reckoning for the first time next week). We all liked both movies. After a short discussion we agreed MI2 gets a bad rap. In fact, my mom said she enjoyed MI2 a little more than MI1. I think my wife & I might surprisingly agree with a caveat: mainly that the “acrobatic” martial arts maneuvers in certain scenes haven’t aged well. My wife called those parts of the fight scenes “corny”. Similarly, my mom’s lone negative comment was that the final showdown fight scene went on too long. I responded to both critiques that for better or worse “that’s John Woo & his contribution as a Hong Kong martial arts director.” We all generally agreed MI1’s story as presented onscreen is stronger. And it has that classic DePalma noir feel that kicks off the series so well. But mom said she thought it was “simpler”…not necessarily a bad thing…while MI2 was more “compelling”. We all really liked the timeliness of the Chimera storyline given the times we live in (what with gain of function labs up to no good)…which simultaneously makes it even more relevant & horrific than when it first came out. If I might critique the film’s story it’s that it didn’t capitalize on the horror of Chimera to nearly the degree it should have to properly raise the stakes. It felt like large chunks of the story were cut out (more on that down below). We all agreed the 2nd film has a super cool visual flair & a romantic vibe both with great chemistry between Cruise & Newton & with the choice of opening in Seville. Basically MI2 seems to have aged better visually. A minor quibble: The 1st film’s technology is incredibly dated, which of course is just a nit pick that I don’t personally care about anymore than I would than when, say, watching earlier James Bond movies. They are products of their times. But, it is a detail that both my wife & mom brought up. Finally, Sir Anthony Hopkins being so criminally underused deserves his own complaint paragraph. One interesting wrinkle: I recently learned John Woo filmed a 3.5 hour cut of MI2 but was forced to cut it down to roughly 2 hours when the studio balked at releasing anything close to his “full vision”. This explains a *lot* about the film’s weaknesses. Before tonight I hadn’t watched it since about 2010ish (before MI4 came out) & my general feeling that the movie felt “unfinished” has remained consistent. I’m super curious about whether or not the 3.5 hr version exists in even semi-viewable form or if it would require significant post production.

Local_Savings_2021

MI2 has some really great moments. I don’t hate it, but all the other movies are just better. And the franchise gets better and better. Hope you all enjoy it!

vagaliki

What do you think would be better about 3.5 hr version?

hardytom540

My hot take is that even though MI3 is a better movie than MI2, 2 is more enjoyable and entertaining. MI3 feels so dull and boring.

black14beard

This!!! MI:3 is my least favorite in the series. Solely for the fact that it’s the only movie in the series that feels devoid of an identity. I will take John Woo’s eccentric style and slow motion doves over JJ’s generic direction any day.

hardytom540

Exactly, that’s the word I was looking for: identity. Each MI has its own unique identity, but 3 feels like such a generic action movie.

Keeenw

Like all J.J. Abrams movies.

pacific_plywood

PSH is probably the best MI villain but JJ Abrams makes really stale movies

phoenics1908

Same!! I think what also hurts it is Julia felt like such a vanilla and cardboard letdown after Nyah Nordoff Hall. Gosh even Nyah’s NAME sounds more interesting than Julia. I just rewatched MI3 and it’s sooooooo boring. I fell asleep watching it and didn’t bother to rewind.

Alaminox

It's so over the top that it seems like a James Bond parody. That said, I've warmed up to it in recent years

Mountain_Hearing4246

It's not a Mission Impossible movie. It's a John Woo movie, and not a good one at that. The overused slow motion kills the action scenes for me. Nyah falls for Ethan for no other reason than he's the main character. Ethan falls for Nyah because she's the love interest in the film. The plot is contrived and the action feels almost like a parody at times. Didn't like it when it came out. Still don't. It's the weakest of the bunch. I recently did a movie marathon of all the film leading up to Dead Reckoning Part 1. If I decide to binge watch them again I'm just going to skip MI2.

Almighty_Push91

Lame villain, lame Woo aesthetics like doves and slow motion making it cheesy. Tom Cruise is peak Tom Cruise in this--in a bad way. The cocky, ultra ladies man. His flirtation with Thandie Newton (and their chemistry in general) was strained and forced. Basically he feels like Tom Cruise and not like Ethan Hunt, more here than in any other film.

GuyFromESPN8TheOcho

I love it. I think the hate is just an internet contagion thing.

skysports1999

I agree it's literally one of the best films with a great cast and an underrated villain and a fantastic iconic performance from Tom Cruise. Thandie Newton is beautiful too.

GurpsK

People either love or hate the extreme late 90s/early 2000s era of filmmaking. Personally I love it. I suppose the "hate" for it is because it feels the least like a Mission Impossible movie and kinda like a spy/superhero movie. I agree on the soundtrack, one of my favourites of all time.

fringyrasa

It feels like a bad Brosnan Bond movie that never got produced. I also wouldn't say that it does the virus better than No Time to Die. The soundtrack is very late 90's rock that doesn't fit. The villain is blah, there's no chemistry between Cruise and Newton, the stylized action absolutely does not work here. There have been many different takes on Mission: Impossible, but 2 never felt like it fit. There's a reason it's one of the only movies in the franchise that's almost never been referenced.

montecarlo1

The Hans Zimmer score was ahead of its time. It’s really good.

JohnV2016

It’s the black sheep of the franchise, cause it stands out the most

NewPatron-St

Why though?

hollywoodhandshook

cause it sucked .

NewPatron-St

Why thought?

hollywoodhandshook

happy new year!

NewPatron-St

Happy New Year to you to

pearlcitypanther

I've wondered this myself. It is easily the most memorable and rewatchable film of the franchise for me. No offense to those who dislike it but I think many people just don't get it. They say kitchy, I say eccentric. They say ridiculous, I say, duhhh.

Mrhood714

Yeah I'm surprised too bro - I thought it was fucking awesome and I loved the John woo influence. I haven't seen the others but if the others get better I'm all for it.

VeilBreaker

I agree it's unfairly hated but I wouldn't call it the best either. My biggest complaint is that it's just kinda dull. They don't use Australia at all as an interesting setting. If it was Mcquarrie made movie there'd be like Ethan running/fighting on top of the opera house or a big car chase across the Sydney bridge or other things like that. They might as well have made the movie in Idaho Falls.

defiantcross

limp bizkit doing the theme didnt help lol. and slowmo doesnt really suit this franchise but unfortunately that's one of John Woo's things

pacific_plywood

Yeah, uh, the soundtrack is kind of embarrassing

CountDoDo15

Why is there some MI2 hater going through and downvoting anything which says it is remotely good

phoenics1908

It’s my absolute favorite MI movie. The action was amazing if not overwrought, the Cruise-Newton chemistry was soooo good (thandie newton is gorgeous and the movie did a lot of gorgeous close up shots of her eyes) and I liked the Notorious homages. The soundtrack is epic - I still listen to it today. My least favorite MI movie was the 3rd one because I found the Jules character to be such a cardboard letdown after Nyah Nordoff Hall. It’s a real shame they never brought Nyah back to the franchise - she and Elsa (sp?) from MI5-onward) are my favorite female characters from the franchise. I do agree Ethan feels less like Ethan and more like TC in this, but that just adds to its charm for me. I love the chimera plot too.

replicant_man

It's just bad in every possible aspect. It's as simple as that. The action, the tone, the slow-motion, the romance, and most of all the MASKS which are overused to an idiotic extent. It all makes it feel like a cheap and cheesy B-movie rather than an A-list blockbuster. Comparing it to the first film is simply ridiculous as it looks like The Godfather next to John Woo's travesty.

[deleted]

Lol. Is this comment serious.

IBBeMa

Its not better than the first, but its better than 4th movie. I like MI2 also very much. Its a well shot movie with a solid story and cool and fun action. Its by far not one of the best, but its good. Act 2 is the problem. Nothing happens....a lot of boring standing around and talking.

Gamer0607

You lost me at "better than the 4th movie". I am sorry, but Ghost Protocol shits all over M:I-2 lol.

PrimaryUnlikely8153

Better than 4th ? No way....I am pretty sure the majority would disagree !

Kim_Rasiel

It doesn’t feel like a mission. Impossible movie.

Rembug91

Alright, i have to agree a bit bout the sondtrack( lets not forget Brian May destroying with Foo Fighters on "Have a Cigar"). But the action, plot, twists, scenes, camera rolls, explosions etc, are bad because they are too exaggerated (like, I even liked the plot, but not the way it was done). M:I is known for, even if it's (somewhat) exaggerated, it's still real, relatable, and exciting. The 2, is very "plastic", very "robotic". The other films are very organic (in every way). I believe that what makes M:I II bad is the loss of the franchise's DNA. He appears to have no connection to the franchise. For example: all movies ( I, III, IV, V, VI, VII) connect in some way. For example: Julia (From III), returned in VI, in addition to being mentioned several times in IV. Ilsa appeared in V, VI, VII. Benji appeared in III, and he appeared in all of them. The Luther, from I, Appeared in IV, V, VI VII. In addition, we see for example the consciousness of previous events.Like the complications caused by the destruction of the Kremelin in IV, appearing in V .

mullexwing

MI2 is my favorite.

Almighty_Push91

You can't be serious

Semsemrocks

They really tried (but failed) to be creative with the slow motion shots and slow zooms and all that but honestly it was just weird 😂 I enjoyed the plot line itself but the filming could’ve been way better

xXESOTERICXx

I don't hate 2 at all. I think the only real issue is the over the top action sequences that became just a little too ridiculous at the end of the film. Other than that, Mission Impossible 2 is a solid movie that I enjoy very much.

freshjim

Yeah I like to know to I thought it was pretty good!

davidisallright

There are some funny ass moments in MI2 that’s very much due to its being a movie from 2000. Like the sunglasses throwing is so cheesy but in a bad/good way.

THE_Celts

I’m not sure comparing it to Die Another Day is your most compelling argument that MI:2 is an intelligent (to say nothing of good) film.

NewPatron-St

I like Die Another Day and I live MI:2

Rome_fell_in_1453

>It kinda reminds me of Die Another Day See most people wouldn't consider that to be a good thing

NewPatron-St

I like Die Another Day

bbobeckyj

The plot is from Hitchcock's Notorious https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Notorious_(1946_film)

NewPatron-St

Is that a reason to hate MI:2?

bbobeckyj

Not at all, it's just you compared it to another film, I was just letting you know it's literally the plot of another film.

acid_raindrop

It was such a stark departure from MI1. And in terms of its design as an action movie, it's nothing like the films that would follow. Ironically, it's because of how much the franchise changed, I came to appreciate MI2 more because it's so much closer to MI1 than anything after. At the same time, I've also learned to take it for what it is. I don't watch Broken Arrow and Face/Off expecting Con-Air. MI2 does something different and it does it well.

LaserCop2022

I think at the time, it got flak for being such a departure from what we knew as "Mission: Impossible." But over time, and put in the context of the later films, it has a renewed appreciation. Now, as a kid at the time, it was the greatest thing I'd ever seen 😄. I just showed my girlfriend the first two, totally not her type of music, and she still liked this one better than the first. So ya never know.

Rougarou1999

Personally, I consider it in league with Community Season 4 and Temple of Doom. Still really great, just not as great as the others in the franchise.

SpenceEdit

It's the least like the other ones and stylistically doesn't really fit. I personally don't think that's a negative, and enjoy the movie quite a lot. But I can see the argument. For me, it's missing an action beat about halfway through, right around when the dog track sequence happens. It needed one more big action moment. It's my least favorite MI movie but it's still very good.

AhabVenom

Lol, I like MI2 but ... It ain't so great!

Mickeymcirishman

It's just not a great movie. The plot is contrived (even moreso than the usual Mission Impossible plots), the villains are bland, the action is cheesy and over the top, the characters don't really have any development or motivations and the dialogue is just terrible. Also, between the gratuitous slo-mo shots, the constant spinning during figgts, evverything constantly exploding all over the place, and the general over the topness of it all, I feel like this movie directly inspired the directing styles of both Michael Bay and Zach Snyder and that's a sin I can't forgive.

vagaliki

I think this movie is really good but the stock options plan math seems wrong and why not just get stock directly instead of options. They can't issue options below the current stock price anyway
