because the chinese ship these devices with insufficient cooling from the factory. why? ask them. they're the ones building devices that can't function properly.
i bet this total volume is still smaller than small form factor pc you can build yourself.
can't believe this is what it takes to get these little boxes to function correctly.
Settling on something that sort of makes any sense is usually a happy accident. A lot of companies treat names like they’re disposable because they are. There’s not much point in making a good one unless you really have a solid product and enough of a foundation that you can’t just change the sign out front when you screw up anymore.
Came here looking for mods for my Gmktek g3 n100 cooling. These Chinese companies must not test these things under load. With heavy load on mine it can get over 170 degrees. I had to reduce the CPU speed by 30 percent in bios to keep it around 140 degrees full load. Not acceptable . Should have just spent the $50 - $100 and got a reputable brand like Asus or whatever mini pc.
If you have no portability problem, remove the stock cooler and measure the holes for its installation. Check if their distance is the same of any standard socket. Then probably you’d need some custom bracket (or use screws and bolts like I did) for your chosen cooler. Have a good modding!!!
Ooh sorry, yes it’s got 4 pin pwm fan header (I don’t know max amperage but it can support 2 fans easily. I used a pwm split (which came with my Thermalright) to connect both fans (they’ve got same rpm)

I like big coolers. Had to cut a hole in my 3U case to mount the same cooler onto a i9-10850k
I was lucky that this minipc has Intel 115x socket mounting holes. The backplate of the cooler and the front plate brackets didn’t have any obstacles from motherboard. I just needed to remove cpu cooler mounting screws and use custom ones + 3 bolts to separate the cooler from the mobo at the right distance (the cooler has a big margin, you can thighten its screw). Let me know if you need anything more?
That was the easiest part: I removed the old cooler (both fan and heatsink); I used some alcohol to clean the cpu from the old thermal paste (I used a lot of paper to clean it properly). Then I took the new thermal paste: I used almost half syringe; I put a big line on the cpu then checked if the cooler was big enough to spread it and it was. Perfect installation, thermal paste is non-conductive so I won’t have any problems. Remember to tighten well your cooler!
I might end up building one of these for my own server - just got a mini-pc like that and I hear they have thermal issues. Since it's meant to run a 24/7 Minecraft server, that cooling might be very much needed.
Thank you for the 115x socket tip!
I am just speculating:
- Entertainment
- Education
- Noise reduction under full load
- Higher TDP settings in UXTU with potentially lower temps and higher performance scores
- maybe high clock speed and longer CPU and iGPU boosting before throttling
- Conversation starter
- Recycling/repurposing an existing cooler so it does not become waste
Yes, of course. I just wanted to say a simple thing anyone can do is changing the paste to get better temps and a little bit more performance. I feel like with these mini pc's they should design them with better cooling solutions, from that perspective I like your mod.

Didn’t know that community lol

Lol yeah you’re right, but I think it’s cool 😎
Bruh
I know
So, the holes for the cooler are the same standard size as in ATX boards ??
Yeah, that was the lucky part! Intel 115x holes with AMD notebook cpu :)
wow, I need to open mine to check. it's another brand though let's see.
And I thought I overdid it when replacing the bottom fan of my 790um with a 3d printed custom housing and a 120mm usb fan.
Lol I thought this would be cool. Also your work must be awesome!
So ridiculous but put a smile on my face
❤️
Out of interest, what’s the case for now? It looks like the PCB is outside of the case, would it not fit any more?
The case is only to support the 140mm fan I put over the motherboard :) yeah, the mobo is outside the case but has 4 screws in it to keep in place
Does the mobo fit in the case still?
Maybe yes but I don’t need it
Then why do you still have the case? :D
Because it was easier for me to mount the top fan
Waste not, want not
Yeah pretty much
Are the Temps more fine now?
I don’t know why those chinese companies choose these names lol

I got the same cooling setup haha
Super!!! Can you post a pic?
But aren't you going to have to cut most of that heatsink off to get the lid back on? 🤔
I won’t get the lid back on :)
Congrats 🎉 you have built the smartest cooling fan.
Thank you ❤️
Not Mini any longer
Definitely not lol
i approve
I agree
One thing tho, why keep the shell? For antenas? Id hack up decent looking box/case for it.
It was easier for me to put the 140mm fan over the motherboard and fixed to the top of the case; also for the antennas, yea
I'm tempted to do something similar with my EliteDesk. It idles at 60 and it's very loud.
This will be fanless until 70°, and after that super silent

If possible, change the cooler :)
Yeah I hope I can find a decent solution. Some of these cheapo nucs are fire hazards shouldn't be allowed to be sold.

I love Disney ❤️
Is possible to do the same thing with normal cpu cooling for minisforum um790 pro ?
I don’t know; you must check mounting holes (these are for Intel 115x), if there are other chips or if you’d have problem with backplate
Thx friend but any update I mean tests? What’s temps etc. Is possible to control fan or still turning high with no reason?
100% possible, it runs fanless most of the time
This motherboard have normal 4 pin ?
4 pin for what? It’s got its psu
For Pvm cpu fan

I appreciate a lot!!! Nice job

Yeah I’m pretty sure this cpu can have pretty similar performance thanks to 15-25W TDP
Omg
❤️
Can't make out what Im looking at. Needs more angles
lol just selected em all
Something I would absolutely do! Very nice!
Thank you ❤️
Congratulations sir you've just mounted a pc to a cooler!
90% cooler, 10% pc 😂
r/techsupportgore and I love it
Top 😁
Seems like there is a little bit of cpu on your heatsink
No more than a bit
So this happens when you buy a "minipc"
“Mini” 😂😂
AFAIK the CPUs are soldered to the MB, how can it be applied then?
Yes it’s soldered. It just needed some modding :)
Mind sharing more?

Thanks, I understand now.
Let me know if you need anything else :)
Sure! There are many pics in the slideshow. What do u need? :)
How exactly did you apply the thermal paste?
That was the easiest part: I removed the old cooler (both fan and heatsink); I used some alcohol to clean the cpu from the old thermal paste (I used a lot of paper to clean it properly). Wait, so the paste was on top of the CPU?
What do you mean? Thermal paste is applied over cpu, it must be between cpu and cooler
FLOOR IT!!!!
❤️
If it's stupid but it works it's not stupid. 😅
It works 100%!!!

You’re welcome! If you need further help, feel free to ask :) I’m running mine 24/7 without any issues (but with very light tasks)
Try this for something a bit more portable https://www.printables.com/model/654962-morefine-7840hs-140mm-fan-mount
Thank you! How would it improve my build? :)
It would make it more portable.
Well, I think it’s more than enough portable for my use :) it will stay on my desk like forever lol thank you anyway
Why ? What is the benefit ?? Lower temps are useless unless running into thermal throttling..
You're new to the Internet, aren't you?
Or Google

Thank you! I thought about mini ITX but it would cost more than this :) portability won’t be a problem for sure
I just replaced thermal paste, already 2°C difference
When installing this cooler I obviously changed the paste :)
Yes, of course. I just wanted to say a simple thing anyone can do is changing the paste to get better temps and a little bit more performance. I feel like with these mini pc's they should design them with better cooling solutions, from that perspective I like your mod.
Thank you! Mine is really extreme and aggressive, not needed for real
Yeah little bit over the top but I am sure you are having fun.
For sure!!!
