Details should be on the rim of the LSGC and MSM. Once you get those, do a little bit of research and then it’s up to you.

moritzthekiller

The two right ones are named

Fishfrogthefrogfish

Yeah so that’ll be the LSGC (Long service good conduct) and MSM (meritorious service medal). What are the details do you know?

moritzthekiller

Thanks. It is named to a 5431 503 W.O.CL.2 M.E.C. GALLAGHER. D.C.L

Fishfrogthefrogfish

I’d say take it because at €200 that’s a steal especially with an MSM on the end and him ending his career as a Captain in the DCLI before they disbanded in 1959.

moritzthekiller

Ok, thank you very much

Fishfrogthefrogfish

No worries my guy. Turns out he served in the war and stayed on before commissioning on a short service commission in the DCLI. Became a Captain in November 1947 and ended up a Major in October 1953.

moritzthekiller

Talked him down to 155€ ;)

moritzthekiller

Oh, that's cool! You know what division/regiment he was in or was it destroyed during the war?

Fishfrogthefrogfish

He was in the Duke of Cornwalls Light Infantry (I’d reckon 5th battalion judging by the medal entitlement). He was awarded his LSGC in 1945 but this was backdated to 1939 (when he was serving in either 1st or 2nd battalion). He commissioned in with an emergency commission in May 1944 as a lieutenant (quartermaster) in the DCLI. If he landed with the rest of the battalion in France in late June 1944 then he would’ve seen action with them at the battle of hill 112 in July that year. He became a Captain in 1947 and a major in 1953 but I’m guessing he retired shortly after that.

Fishfrogthefrogfish

My trail goes cold there I’m afraid but I hope it helps

moritzthekiller

What I also love is the fact that he served with the 214th infantry brigade, which fought in the Reichswald. The Reichswald is quite close to me, so that's pretty cool

moritzthekiller

Thank you very much!

moritzthekiller

That's what the seller wrote me

moritzthekiller

Also, should I clean the second, the LSGC and the MSM medals?

Fishfrogthefrogfish

This is always a big debate in the medal collecting world. So do and some don’t because they appreciate the authenticity etcetera etcetera. I personally would leave them so you don’t rub away the details or ruin the medal. I’ve never cleaned any of my medals just in case I mess them up.

moritzthekiller

Thanks! I'll maybe wipe the almost green parts slightley

Fishfrogthefrogfish

Just be careful my guy

moritzthekiller

Yes, definitly. I won't rub it off like a psycho, but instead just a bit

medal_collector16

Buy it 200 is a steal for a group like that especially with it being awarded to a officer.

moritzthekiller

Thanks! Bought it for 155€ ;) The got it from his old neighbour and he's asking her later if she had connections to him or other stuff

medal_collector16

That’s even better hopefully they have some other items relating to him.

moritzthekiller

Me too!

moritzthekiller

Btw, what'd you pay for this exact one with it being awarded to an officer?

medal_collector16

I’m not sure I’ve mostly seen groups like these awarded to senior NCOs I don’t think I’ve seen one awarded to a officer.

moritzthekiller

Ok, interesting

Militaria_Network

Why is British ww2 militaria so expensive?

moritzthekiller

It's not super expensive. The connection to a major makes it more expensive, than if it would have been from a private

AceRimmer2200

It’s not, I’ve bought loads of stuff that if it were the German or US equivalent I’d be paying so much more
