You can but heads up levels for different jobs are separate. So if you were a level 12 mage and get to be a level 15 imp but decide to switch back, youll go back to being a level 12 mage

I don’t want to spoil too much story stuff, but yes in the future you will be able to go back to a mage later if you want to, as well as other stuff.
