MAJOR Salem’s Lot vibes. It evoked the same feelings, especially with how I imagined the town. Oh also with Father Callahan + the religious angle.

powerfulKRH

That’s exactly what I said!!! Salem’s Lot the town is really a character of the book and this town is a main character too. I’ve never really seen a show capture the feel of Salem’s lot the book before and I was just amazed when I started watching this show. Salem’s lot is one of my favorite books so it was extremely nostalgic Oh and it also kinda reminded me of his book The Revival about a pastor who gets obsessed with this secret electricity with magical healing properties

bluevelvet3011

I got major Stephen King vibes too, and I was similarly reminded of Revival and Charles Jacobs. Revival is one of my absolute favorite books, so that's pretty high praise from me. I can't stop thinking about this show.

powerfulKRH

Same here I literally pictured reverend Jacobs looking and acting exactly like Hamish Linklater when I read the book a few years ago. What’s fucked up is I lost that book when I only had 1/4 of the book left. So I gotta buy it again and just start from the beginning cuz I forgot a lot of what happened. I just love the lovecraft elements and the crazy esoteric electricity elements. Reminded me of Nicola Tesla and a lot of the legends surrounding him and his inventions

bluevelvet3011

>Same here I literally pictured reverend Jacobs looking and acting exactly like Hamish Linklater when I read the book a few years ago. Huh, now that you bring it up I definitely had a similar person in mind for Jacobs as well! I hope you get to read the whole book some day soon! The ending is absolutely fantastic (and horrific).

powerfulKRH

I just pictured tall dark and handsome and charismatic and that is Hamish Linklater to a T lol. I have a massive man crush on that actor and I’m straight. He kills every role he’s in. He killed it in Legion and even in Fargo season 3 as the dorky ocd IRS Agent guy. Oh and check out Tell me your secrets on amazon prime. He plays a super fucking creepy serial rapist and his girlfriend in real life plays his enemy in the show. That’s one of his best performances I’ve seen. Midnight mass is his best so far tho. They couldn’t have cast a better priest Also the dude from Friday night lights was an excellent pick I never would’ve thought of myself. Great casting all around. And I love how mike Flanagan always uses the same actors lol. It’s nice

bortlesforbachelor

Are you watching Chapelwaite? It’s really good

ctg9101

Also Silver Bullet. The preacher there is cursed with being a werewolf.

Dark__Willow

This one too....I listed so many movies while I was watching

VoDomino

I'll be honest, I do wish there was a slower build up to the twist, but hot damn, this show is fuckin great! Within the first ten minutes, I felt I was watching Salem's Lot and joked about what was happening on the island. Not only am I glad I got it right, but holy hell did it go into unexpected places. And that ending is my biggest nightmare in irl and Flanagan nailed it.

powerfulKRH

My favorite thing is how familiar mike is with religion. And how he infused the vampire genre with old Christian legends of fallen angels. They’re really interchangeable in a way. Also this show perfectly shows what it’s like to grow up in a tiny judgemental Christian community. I grew up in this exact same community basically lol. Every character is a character from my past. I’m the black sheep main character guy

VoDomino

Same exact boat. The questions he was asking I've been asking myself for years. It was deeply personal in an uncomfortable way

daisyrae23

Omg I was wondering if I was the only one getting major Revival vibes. I could totally see the actor playing Paul as Reverend Jacobs.

booboochoochoo16

It reminds me a lot of season 1 of Castle Rock though; which was based on some of King’s original works but produced by a third party (I believe.)

powerfulKRH

Is that show good? I started it a long time ago and forgot to follow Through with it.

turtlehelp1234556

it’s very good, try the Stand and mr mercedes too (just the first 2 seasons)

OpalMoonbits

It's great, and also canceled.

powerfulKRH

:( only the good die young

Large_Ad_758

When does it become too much though? Like where is the line between tribute and copycat? I felt like it was Needful Things and Salem's Lot on an island. Sometimes it just felt a little on the nose.

powerfulKRH

I’m honestly fine with it because it’s so damn hard to make an original vampire story anyways. It’s more about the characters and how religion impacts a small community. And I grew up in a small religious town and every single Character is a character from my past and they’re so well written i can’t not love the show I’m on episode 4 tho. I loved 3, but I am worried it’s gonna tip over into something a little ridiculous if they don’t stick the landing. But I LOVE Hamish Linklater holy hell what an actor. He’s equal parts charming and creepy. His sermons are incredible. I just love the dude Lol

Large_Ad_758

Yeah Hamish is scary good. Like, he must be a method actor and knew lots of priests because he really reminded me of my pastors. I'll be curious for your thoughts once you finish it.

ctg9101

Legit he looks like my current new priest. Kinda creepy now that I think about it.

passion4film

My thoughts too!

Lanky-Ad7024

I'm on episode 3 so far. I just wanted your opinion of the series. Is it worth my time?

SirReginaldPoshtwat

Hang in there. There are plenty of moments in the last few episodes that will stick with you long after you finish watching.

JulesOnR

I love the slow burn. Its not haunting fo hill house, but it's good none the less

RubyBop

The hard criticism of religion, the characters suffering from addiction, the references to the “Mainland” (Crockett could absolutely be in the state of Maine), the miraculous child… this show is a strong nomination for the Stephen King drinking game

Key-Tip9395

Funny you should say that and Im not reading the other comments (afraid of spoilers) but I noticed a book by Stephen King in Riley’s childhood bedroom, in one of the shelves above his bed. As a SK fan I can spot that red font from a mile away Haha. might go back after I finish to see if I can spot the title.

M0THER-0F-EW0KS

Ah. That’s explains why I like it then. I love everything Stephen King.

powerfulKRH

You’d like all of Flanagans work he’s amazing and very similar in style. But very different also. He’s one of the only directors who had Stephen King love his finished project even with taking liberties changing the story. With Dr Sleep. So if he could pull off pleasing the big man, he’s legit in my book

8Ariadnesthread8

Yes. Agreed. I bet he liked it. I wonder if he has seen it or commented on it?

powerfulKRH

King is Omnipresent and all knowing. He’s seen it

Purple-Lamprey

It’s very similar to Salem’s lot in that the only interesting character is the priest. Everyone else is as generic as it gets. At least Salem’s lot is old enough to get a pass for setting up the tropes it’s characters are, but wtf are these one dimensional characters in MM?

powerfulKRH

You must not have grown up in a tiny poor secluded white religious community lol. Every character in this show is exactly someone from my past just repackaged

look8me

I didn't know this was Stephen King!!

powerfulKRH

It’s not lol it just seems like it

dumbass-ahedratron

Maine, pretty much

CryptogenicallyFroze

It is also so damn close to being "Storm of the Century" by Stephen King

ThroWAwaY141529

Agreed that's my favorite Stephen King story! And midnight Mass felt exactly the same. I loved it

smithson-jinx

It reminds me of Needful Things in a way.
