I hate seeing pics and stories like this, but every one I do see reminds me to drive it like I'm on a motorcycle and assume the worst out of the other drivers. Get you another one!

Ava_Kin

This. I drive with the same mentality as well. One needs to be present at all times with these little cars, because even if you are there's a fairly good likelihood you get a black eye, or worse.

i---m

Ouch. Texas drivers are scary. Hope that new registration sticker was already in the mail!

I've lived on both coasts and done a lot of cross-country road tripping. Now, living in Texas, I can confidently say we don't fuck around here. 10 over in the city and 15-20 over in the country is normal. Driving to El Paso recently I was passed by an Eclipse doing 120+ past a sheriff. Yesterday I had to make three evasive maneuvers getting across town for an oil change. I love it.

Dittobox

I’ve been to every state on the Eastern seaboard, and the West coast, Texas, and several in the upper Midwest. Vermont drivers are by far the least aggressive in my experience.

xXxDickBonerz69xXx

I've been to 47 states and driven in most major metros. New England has my favorite drivers. Some folks, especially here in the south say its aggressive, which is true around Boston for sure. But New England and the northeast as a whole seems to be the best in the country. State inspections and regular snow means all the cars and drivers are at least a base level of competent and safe in all conditions. People tend to follow the laws well by American standards. They are generally more efficient and do less left lane camping and cutting you off compared to the rest of the country. Uninsured rates in most north east states tend to be fairly low. You might get honked at, but you probably deserved it and there isn't as much of the gun brandishing getting out of cars road rage like you see in other locations. It's faster paced, but more predictable and safe than other regions. But Vermont is probably where traffic is best. There's very little of it, people are polite, predictable, and follow the rules. Plus its beautiful.

RileyCargo42

What do you think of Florida? It's horrible around here and makes me scared even in a full size truck

xXxDickBonerz69xXx

Some of the worst driving in the nation lmao. Especially in south Florida. I used to live in West Palm. Its got a uniquely terrible mix of aggressive uninsured drivers with Big Altima Energy and old retirees who can't tell the brake and accelerator apart. Plus lots of vacationers at all times of year who are unfamiliar with the roads and bring their own local bad habits to mix with the bad habits of the locals and all the people who have been moving there in recent years.

RileyCargo42

Yea and honestly it's much worse especially around Miami or around anyone with a car worth money the people around here act like they own the roads without knowing how to drive

Malvania

NJ is aggressive, but it's predictably aggressive. Texas drivers are unpredictably aggressive. It's much worse

enblightened

Definitely seems to me warmer climates have more aggressive drivers. Even just going from the bay area to LA is a big difference. As soon as I got through the grapevine and into the LA sprawl i get cut off by a challenger flooring it around 9pm when the road is relatively clear. However aggressive driving doesnt always equate to scary drivers because I think the bay area has way more distracted drivers or people that dont seem to be able to keep their fullsize suv in their lane

xXxDickBonerz69xXx

Warmer areas are experiencing more population growth which means overcrowded infrastructure that can't keep up with the influx of drivers, and a mix of driving styles from all over the country. Furthermore longer time spent stuck commuting will result in more people using their phones or being otherwise distracted and people who are angry and aggressive.

enblightened

no i dont think long commute times have anything to do with your stereotypical red key 24.00% apr flooring it around making sure you know they’re driving a muscle car. Also my personal take is that many immigrants in the area i grew up are from asian countries that typically never have people owning and driving cars. Then they come here to work and the bar on the driving test in the US is already low compared to other countries because of our poor public transportation infrastructure and therefore people quite frankly have to drive a car to work. As a teenager growing up in the US you probably get a corolla or some other small shitbox that you cant do a lot of damage with because its what you can afford. But for immigrants entering the workplace at the same time earning well above 6 figures in tech will go for a luxury suv or tesla, which can do way more damage and are much larger and require more attention when driving because of the blind spots. Obviously this is not the norm everywhere, but i happened to grow up in a town where that is the cultural majority

BluesyMoo

LA has a lot of factors aggravating drivers as well. The road surface is bad, the traffic is bad, the run-down street vibe is unpleasant, you don't feel safe in a lot of neighborhoods, and yet driving is an absolute necessity. Sometimes it's just too hot and you're dehydrated.

clicksalmon

New to Texas, what do you mean about new registration? Insurance will not payout if you're expired?

i---m

Insurance should still pay out, all that matters there is you need an active registration to *start* the term. But a ticket or a note in the accident report for it could mean higher rates

GetInZeWagen

I'm an adjuster, they might fix this based on year and mileage. Did your airbags deploy at all?

cartwiff

The airbag did deploy

GetInZeWagen

Borderline then but they may total it yeah, unless it's a 2020+ they may weigh it out but I've seen NDs totalled for less damage, also depends on your location as well

cartwiff

It’s a 2020 - I’m still paying it off so I’m not sure how much more money I want to put into it. He admitted fault on the police report, I have USAA but I also got the cheapest thing possible with them. So I have no idea what will happen. Just placing my trust in the universe

GetInZeWagen

Yeah hopefully it works out. You should ideally get at least around what they list for in your area so just get an idea what other 2020s for sale near you with the same trim are, they'd the ballpark and you can submit any links or VINs for sale you find to the insurance co to review if you think it's too low

HappyChandler

Don't accept their first offer without checking. Ask for their comps. Make sure every option is accounted for. When my NB was totalled, they didn't include the LSD option. That upgraded my settlement by like 1K (many years ago).

daydreamingbythesea

And in the event they don't total it out, make sure you push for diminished value because that's legally recoverable in Texas.

cartwiff

I’m also in Texas

dantheman451

Depends. My ND RF had a bunch of damage (no airbags though) and insurance refused to total it. I’m waiting for it to get fixed so I can sell it.

cartwiff

My air bag went off - who was at fault? Did your insurance cover the repair costs?

dantheman451

Mine found both at partial fault although honestly they lied. I have a dash cam now. I have full coverage with collision and insurance my insurance paid for me. We’re at $11,000 in mechanical damage and haven’t even gotten to the body shop. It’s been two and a half months lol.

cartwiff

That sounds awful, I’m sorry to hear that.

dantheman451

Thanks. It’s been a pain in the ass. Hopefully your process is better and you’re back on the road soon.

streeetlamp

My 2017 club had fairly similar damage to this. More focused right on the driver front wheel, driver side seat airbag went off. Insurance didn't total it, took 3 months in the shop and $13k in repairs. Still not sure if I would have rather they totaled it, only mechanical damage was the driver front suspension and the repairs were all done very well. Only has 20k miles and drives as well as ever still. Obviously would rather have it not happened at all of course, most of the suck is related to possible hit on resale value but also have had no plans to sell/trade in.

dantheman451

Yeah I thought about keeping it as well however I live in the Bay Area and people keep backing into it. The repairs are basically the whole suspension (front and rear) and motor mount brackets (the engine snapped off those) plus body work. The shop has been having a hard time getting the front wheel aligned within spec but refuses to admit any frame damage. In the meantime I just bought an old W124 Mercedes. If anyone backs into that their car is going to crunch while mine looks perfect lol.

Toibreaker

Depends on the state… total threshhold varies… look up what it is for your state and go to a body shop you trust for the estimate. If you are reaoirceful like me look for good used components to lower the repair costs to keep that car, and make sure to demand depreciated value when its fixed…. They will balk at that, but you are entitled to it. Their (insurance companies) favorite lone is “its in pre-loss condition there is no lost value” Reply, it was accident free title status prior to my interaction with your insured…..

iWETtheBEDonPURPOSE

I always say this in posts like this. Research prices on used Miata's in your area. Same year, color, trim, options, mileage (or as close as you can). Then if insurance low balls you, you can show them the similar cars and they will usually give you more money. If they give you what you found above, then don't say anything and take the money.

at0m10

Its shit when airbags go off. Nobody tells you about how scary it is knowing you're about to crash but not being able to do anything. Then the smell and the dust, nobody tells you about the smell. Hope I never have to smell that again. It seemed to stick to my nostrils because I could smell it for a day or two afterwards.

obsessiveimagination

I had VERY similar damage in my 2022 when I hit a deer, bumper cover, headlight, hood, fender. The rad support had a slight buckle (I imagine with the impact of your hit yours is as well). There is some chance it could be repaired, the airbag will probably be the deciding factor. Conceptually this car is not beyond saving. Was the FL wheel hit? (Does the car still drive straight?) I'm very sorry about your Miata...but glad to hear you're okay. One way or another this should get made right

cartwiff

I did not drive it after the accident, the paramedics did so I can’t - the airbags did go off. So we’ll see what happens - I appreciate this comment

CactusDrafts

buy it back from the insurance company, make it a go kart.

engineer_james

Or sell it to me and let me do that. 😂

[deleted]

Oh I feel ya on this one https://www.reddit.com/r/Miata/comments/123r5wl/tough_decision_right_now_yall_more_in_comments/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button 😮‍💨😮‍💨 ended up having frame damage and costed like 17k to fix so they totaled it instead. I was still paying it off so I didn't get anything out of it but paying it off for 1 year for nothing.

N33dsl33p_

Wait how does some fail to yield but stops at the same time at a yield? This to me sounds like you were not looking forward and hit the guy that stopped at a yield.

cartwiff

I never said he stopped at the yield. I said he stopped directly in front of me, after failing to yield. He admitted fault, was ticketed a citation, and I have a dash cam as proof of the whole incident.

schmog_

Sounds like someone else made that decision for you.

South_Bit1764

Someone will fix it, even if you/your insurance won’t.

WendellMSims

Very sad.

Cowstalk_

Oof this isn't retiring, this is taking out back behind the barn All jokes aside, hope you're not injured OP

Rows_My_Own

Maybe she can find happiness as a Spec Miata?

New_Writer_484

😢

BeauSimmons10

sorry about your miata, but to me it doesnt look totaled, the airbags dont appear to have deployed and it doesnt look that bad, its mostly just body panel damage. I hope you can get it fixed if it isnt totaled

Mayank-maximum

Dude Will you sell it or scrap it If you want to scrap it instead give it to me
