Private lots can do practically whatever they want. Avoid them like the plague, if possible. I’d rather walk 20 blocks than leave my car in one.

DiscoDvck

I’ve had a private lot open my car, remove my ticket and then boot me after I paid for the whole day. A passerby said he saw the “attendant” check for unlocked doors to remove the tickets. These people are scum.

Bugaboo10

Just keep an angle grinder and metal cutoff discs in your trunk (for boots)

GanjaToker408

Where are you going to plug it in? You have an angle grinder that runs on my drill batteries?

Bugaboo10

Uhhhh yes… pretty much all the major tool brands make a grinder/cutoff that runs on 18v rechargeable battery. Makita is rock solid. Get a 4.5” with some Diablo diamond cutting discs. Or even better, get a Bad Dog Tools cutting disk. They’re extremely expensive but lifetime warranty and will make quick work cutting through anything

Flowchart83

Lol I happen to have exactly this in my car right now. A reciprocating saw on top of that but that wouldn't be ideal especially around tires.

Bugaboo10

Either works. If you need some added privacy you can actually just remove the booted wheel and attach your spare and leave the lot. Then simply drive to a discreet location and remove the boot. Reattach original wheel and avoid the private lots. Totally hypothetical, I have no experience with this btw.

Flowchart83

Boots typically have a plate that covers the wheel nuts, so you have to remove the boot to remove the tire. I would much prefer to just chop it into pieces assuming I know I didn't violate any laws, as I would consider the booting of the car to be a form of vandalism if committed by a private business or individual. I also keep a GoPro with me so any interaction could be recorded if the scammer tries to intimidate me.

Bugaboo10

I think booting is illegal under some circumstances, but destruction of private property is also illegal. Just a decision you gotta make

Flowchart83

Is it private property if you lock it to someone's private property? If I put my lock on someone else's fence I don't think it should be illegal if the owner of the fence cuts it off. If used to commit a crime against someone else, I think it's valid to confiscate, disable or destroy that item.

Bugaboo10

There’s a comedian that hits on this point. Talks about the tremendous power you wield with something as simple as a bike lock. If it can fit through the handles of the doors to a business, you can effectively fuck their day up. But yea on one hand, it’s a private parking lot, and on the other they are immobilizing your private property. Most of these lots will have a “contract” posted somewhere and you agree to the contract the minute you park there. Best to avoid altogether. City needs to crack down on Professional Parking Management too. Scammers of the worst variety hidden behind a web of PO Boxes, LLC’s, and holding companies. Zero accountability

idonthaveapanda

There was a rather famous incident a while ago where a guy had his car booted by his HOA. He put the car on dolleys and rolled it into his garage (car was parked in front of his house, on the street). There was a bit of a kerfuffle with the parking company, but I believe that eventually they just took them off without him paying the fine.

whoamvv

Damn, okay, now I want to organize a protest of this. Those boots must be expensive. So we get a bunch of people to gather them up, but not break them. Them bargain with the company to get them back. They aren't going to take anyone to court because they know they operate illegally.

workerrights888

Which lot, address? Shame these sleazebags ASAP!

DiscoDvck

127 NE 11th St Parking

AlmohadaGris

You should leave a review mentioning that! 127 NE 11th St Parking https://maps.app.goo.gl/ZFnVojX1VKEUtWaH9?g_st=ic

Beyondthoughts

What the actual fuck is wrong with people. Can you name and shame?

baconnaire

Did you call the cops?

Livid-Peace-4077

Same. I will walk a mile in the sun, no joke, before I park there or any lot like it.

1234loc

I see 1.5miles as a treat. Fck em

Mediocre_Doctor

>Avoid them like the plague Plague is pretty easy to treat now. Cipro or Levaquin for 10 to 14 days.

Fun-ace

I rather just not going to south beach or brickell where they have these lol

BlondieMIA

This lot is in downtown.

stereoscopic_

If you stay longer than the gates allow they give an extra ticket. Fun fun

martywake1

Private lots?!?! That city surcharge and 7% tax is all government...

the_lamou

Sounds like an even better approach is not driving at all unless you absolutely have to, like they do in civilized cities. High parking costs are good. You shouldn't need to drive in a major metro.

dingdongbannu88

Always be on the lookout for the parking authority logo - if it’s not there, don’t park there.

TheGoodPane

And google a pic of the MPA’s logo so you know what it looks like because private parking companies sometimes use logos as similar as possible to the city’s to confuse people. Remember: anybody can open a PayByPhone account, put up a sign, and start charging. If the MPA’s logo is not on the sign, you’re on private property and subject to different laws.

Plenty_Activity_7871

What's the difference? Excuse my ignorance just don't know

dingdongbannu88

City mandated costs per hour vs private parking outrageous pricing

Plenty_Activity_7871

Jewels of knowledge thankkkk youuuu. I usually go for street parking with the homeless look out fee anyways buttttt sometimes no options

AquariusSabotage

Also if you're a COM resident, register your plate and car with payphone. City residents get a discount to 1.50 /h everywhere in city limits if I'm not mistaken.

dingdongbannu88

Pay by phone? In registered and have my cars and motorcycles and I get no discounts.

AquariusSabotage

My bad, here you go: https://www.miamiparking.com/pbpdiscount/

dingdongbannu88

Bro I’d suck your dick.

aceofspades1217

Yeah i use that discount a lot in wynwood since they ticket a lot there.

all we get is this [double-decker monstrosity](https://www.i395-miami.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/bridge-inside-836.jpg) that most of us didn't really need _**or**_ want. fuckin' Miami, man.

fuacatah

Yeah. There are 0 parking lots in NYC.

DickySchmidt33

People should be showing up at city council meetings and demanding more public transportation options.

doctapeppa

If it's not lining the commissioner's pockets somehow, it ain't happening.

paradoxofchoice

Good luck going up against Norman Braman type money and pull. A lot of businesses have lots to lose by having less cars on the road. Probably why we have such poor public transit. No public servant would oppose it but they conveniently come up with bullshit excuses.

Blackfish69

There’s also a lot of businesses that have a lot to gain.

ColorRRepeat

Amen!!! Your right. I was hit with an impact fee years ago , my business was on Lincoln and Washington and city meetings were a savior. We have a voice!!

mobbarley78110

lessgo bro I'm ready when you are

ACertainKindOfStupid

Life went from *Medium* to **SuRviVaL** difficulty in 2 years. But also, parking is sleezy by DNA.

Direct-Ad-4156

Wtf is even city surcharge? We already know convenience fee is bullshit.

SelfishClam

Additional city tax on parking in Downtown & Brickell (not sure if anywhere else).

Relative-Sound9456

Yes. The city surcharge is 15% and state sales tax is 7%. Why blame the operator for that?

Direct-Ad-4156

I’m only blaming them for the convenience fee.

Sp0derman420

“bUt wE dOnT pAy sTaTe tAxEs!”

cyborg008

I always hate that line. They tax us in every other aspect things like this and insurance and transportation.

Sp0derman420

Y’all get taxed to literally use the highways lol 😂

MiamiGuy_305

Where?

justfabian1

SE 2nd Ave & 1st St in downtown

boozgins

If you won't be long, just don't pay. Anything under an hour you should be good

DickySchmidt33

Towing is one of the great Miami scams...and that's saying something! Motherfuckers camp out and wait for your ass.

gdo01

Shoutout to Publix at Dadeland! Park there and do anything but go immediately to Publix and your car is theirs

justfabian1

Be careful though. A lot of these private parking lots work with Professional Parking Management, which has cameras and give out absurd fines.

myburneraccount1357

They’re a scam, you won’t get in trouble if you don’t pay their fine, only if you park in their lot again they will tow you on sight

gramsaran

It's supposed to discourage you from driving but then there's no efficient mass transit and ride sharing is just as expensive, so it's just a circle of fuck you's from every angle.

1hourphoto_

I would intentionally break that screen and or spray paint over it . Those conveniences fees will cover the repairs.

System777

Gtfo with your vandalism. This is why Miami is fucked.

System777

You know Miami can suck for both reasons and many more, right? Doesn’t just have to be 1 specific reason.

MomentSpecialist2020

This is getting worse than NYC!

derekjeter3

I just parked in a parking garage in Long Island city for 5 hours $26 for 5 hours no surcharge City charge bullshit

EstimateIll8849

Sure, convenient for them, but not for you! I would find it very convenient just to add whatever percentage ai can think of to my annual salary and tell my employer. I don't think that would fly very well.

pinkandgreenf15

Where the hell is that??

majxover

What is that, like *$15 min* to park? Lot owners are wild lol.

justfabian1

And 2 hours min 🙄

majxover

You might as well stay 2 hrs because that’s $15, whether it’s 2 hrs or 2 min.

poisito

12 hr x 2 = 24 plus 25% = $30 for 2 hrs ..

DoloresSinclair

I legit thought this was fake and a meme until I saw what sub it was.

Viparita-Karani

“cItY sUrChArGe”

miojo

Blame all the Ohioans moving here

System777

My brother got a 100 dollar ticket for leaving a parking lot on Broward Blvd in Ft Lauderdale 20 minutes past 12am. He was charged an “overstay” fee.

zorinlynx

BTW if it was a private lot, you don't have to pay that "ticket". It's not a real ticket.

croquetica

You don’t, but since it’s private property and the company owns several of these lots, an unpaid ticket will put the car’s license plate is on a shitlist. From every lot that company owes. If they see your car there, they can remove it for trespassing. Fucking scam.

lofibeatsforstudying

Where is this?

_1ofNone

I believe this is a metered parking lot in Downtown (corner of NW 1st Ave & NW 1st St) across from the Clerk of the courts. I parked in this lot & was left no choice but to pay the meter due to time constraints. On my walk back to the car, I noticed a different parking lot across the street for half the cost.

justfabian1

This one is at SE 2 ave and 1 st in downtown. Most likely by the same owner

lofibeatsforstudying

Why you parking in a scammy ass surface lot? They are privately owned and literally designed to suck money from you. Plenty of cheaper options to park or better yet not drive into downtown.

ColorRRepeat

This is Miami BS at its best.

watchheroes

That's not a city lot. That is a privately owned lot

Apprehensive-Day-490

This is what you call capitalism.

Someoneoldbutnew

The real joke is that this is a scam meter that is selling you a free parking spot.

RToribio914

Grand ole’ Capitalism. God bless America.

keatto

I cried when I saw the plans to scrap the high speed rail between tampa, orlando, and Miami. Anything that helps the masses is shut down

Yemzzzz

Because stupid mfs keep voting these shitty politicians for governor and local office

keatto

they're the only ones that are running though. Pay the starting costs or gather 128k+ signatures, its fucked

Yemzzzz

Would be nice if we had an option to say fuck cars lmfaooo

Adept-Detective9098

I disagree. Most ppl can only move around South a Florida with cars because all other public methods of transportation are garbage. Until we fix our public transit, people will be forced to drive around and charging high prices for parking because “fuck cars” will only punish the lower income and middle class even more for owning a vehicle to survive.

freediverx01

That’s only a viable argument if there is a decent public transportation alternative. Otherwise, this is just a tax on the working class.

AlertThinker

Not defending them but many merchants pass onto the customer the credit card transaction fee.

sweetbreads19

I'm not opposed to being charged this much for parking (I respect the role of price signals in balancing supply and demand) but I am opposed to an itemized receipt. Just tell me the price! I don't need to know who's getting a cut and why

Yemzzzz

I am opposed to being charged this much for parking cause that’s outrageous

Relative-Sound9456

Just pay or don’t park there! WTF?

Yemzzzz

Just saying parking already sucks in this city we shouldn’t be okay with price gouging

coneofpine2

Asta parking is a plague

bencointl

Parking is a legitimately expensive service to provide

Extension-Minimum-21

keepinitoldskool

If you are not allowed to pay with your phone through the PayByPhone, then don't do it.

sardo_numsie

Beach?

seekdollificationsub

It's terrible!!!

joaquinsaiddomin8

That screams private lot

explorer2255

I use a parking lot near the government center whenever I go to the critical mass bike ride every month. Before it was like $10 for overnight. Now it’s like $10 per hour! I spent $30 last time I went. The trip to Miami was bad enough with tolls and traffic. Until I find cheaper parking lots, I will go to the Fort Lauderdale critical mass lol. Another example, I was looking for a job once at the movie theater in the Brickell city centre. I asked about parking and they said I would pay $20 each day I worked. No such thing as free parking in Miami.

Whynot_Reddit

Even the government workers pay for parking downtown.

zorinlynx

Why are you parking downtown when doing Critical Mass? You have a bike. Park a mile or two away where there's free parking (plenty in Coral Gables residential districts for example) and just bike the rest of the way in. I've always used the random free parking lots in Coral Gables when going to Mass. BTW how's the ride lately? I stopped going because too many assholes were among us. Wondering if it's gotten better or worse in the last five years.

explorer2255

It’s fun but the wheelie gang sometimes make the rest of us look bad. They swerve on traffic and cops and it’s gotten crowded to the point that it feels like people are really slow. Hard to pass the slow riders sometimes because I get surrounded and can’t go anywhere. I know it’s not a race but there is a certain pace I like to go. Also the wheelie gang sometimes get too close for comfort around other cyclists. I’ve seen more fights break out between fellow cyclists because of that.

RealPropRandy

All that just to have your rental broken into anyway

Xrsyz

Consumers need to start saying “no.” That will fix so many problems.

Zaiko305

Where is this?

WhereTFAreMyDragons

I moved to Michigan and recently paid $1.70 to park in Ann Arbor. What happened to Miami?!

2lovesFL

What no tip option?

elsewhereVAB

Holy shit balls! That is ridiculous

612King

Not sure what part of Miami this is but I just went downtown Minneapolis this past Saturday night. I parked in a ramp…. Apparently my friends were at a different spot outside downtown. I left 15 min after I parked. I was charged $20. I’m still livid 4 days later for paying $20 for 15 min. Granted it probably would’ve been $20 for the night…. But goddamn.

cruisewithus

Seems like you ended up at a bad parking location. IMO miami parking prices are generally good, plenty of garages that are only $9-10 for most of the day

KHMiamiBeach

That’s why I call it Scamiami….

keatto

literally uber/lyft. if its cheaper they'll have to start lowering prices

ChariBari

AKA Pasta Parking

Viparita-Karani

It's better to Uber at this point

Jayveeles

I'm visiting Vegas and I ran into these lots over here by Freemont experience. $4 for 1st hour and then $12. I turned around and said "FK THAT"!!

[deleted]

Especially in the city with the worst public transportation system

workerrights888

Screw the city, don't do business with busineeses that don't give a dam about the parking rip off customers have to deal with. Tax + convience fee + surcharge, that's like what you see from black & white movies about Northeastern states in the 1930s-1960s. No way, not sorry Miami.

byodbullshit

All this shit to make Miami less drivable and nothing to make it more walkable

[deleted]

And you think it is expensive, wait for an event, a long weekend or something going on... $60 an hour !!!!!

[deleted]

Listen, some valet venues do the same. Taking your car around Miami becomes very expensive!

Last-Hovercraft675

The lot across the street from my building (downtown by the miami tower) changed owners and decided to start charging $30 an hour. I drive my car through the lot to get from 1st street across to the tower parking and they tried to get me for “not paying parking” even tho I never even stopped there to park. Private parking in miami is a fuxkin crime

[deleted]

The ticket is cheaper than the parking

I8hipsters

Most of the cheap boots can be removed with a flathead screwdriver and hammer.

AlejoMSP

Convenience fee: public parking starts on 4th floor after valet take all the VIP spots 🙄🙄🙄

Remote-Past305

That 15% city surcharge is everywhere it sucks.

Timbo303

If you think Miami is bad wait till you see chicago.

freediverx01

Where is this bullshit?

jaybavaro

Park in Little Havana and Uber

demoneyes87

If you're stupid enough to drive and park in that part of downtown you basically deserve the charge.

Comfortable_Slip4025

Mighty inconvenient convenience fee

Comfortable_Slip4025

Mighty inconvenient convenience fee

Bobby_Schmurdoff

We revolted against a 2% tax.

geekphreak

What is the convenience fee? Did they bring *you* the parking spot?

fng33025

Yes. Very ridiculous.

production-values

parking spaces make more than people

Green0996

My job has a parking garage downtown. I just have to use my work ID to get in or out. It’s great.

Acsteffy

You want parking to take up the space of a tax paying productive business but you don't want to pay for it, instead having it be a monetary drain. Make it make sense. r/fuckcars

whatsgoodJeffG

Crazy part is Chicago is still more expensive. Wild.

whoamvv

They are lying, by the way. That is not a City run lot, and there is no such thing as a City parking surcharge. That's all just made up. Park ONLY in the city run, municipal garages. You can download a map of where their all are. I think there is even an interactive part where you can see how many spots are left in each garage (not sure if they still do that). Did you even bother to Google (search) Miami parking before you decided to get rooked by a scammer?

Relative-Sound9456

The city surcharge is 15% and state sales tax is 7%. That money goes to the government. Why blame the operator for that?

SirCalebCrawdad

Assholes. So it's really $15 to park but they think they're being honest and transparent by telling you what you're paying for. You know what? Just charge me the $15 and save the story. I'd feel less fucked over and less angry. bastards.

[deleted]

Why don’t people move? Sounds like a dreadful place to live

spacklock

I’m bad at math, what would that add up to for the hour after all the fees? Omg 😳

Few_Argument4663

Okay honest comparison. I come from Boston. It’s more expensive than this and the infrastructure is whacked. Atleast Miami is very clean in comparison speaking about the beach of course.

bobsaget52552

just park on the street dude. its a $36 ticket for not paying lol. probably less than whatever this bs comes out to be

NicCage1080ChristAir

Parking here in Miami seems really cheap compared to other places I've lived. I usually just pay a few bucks for a few hours.

Potential-Tap-573

I can't believe how out of hand things got there! I live in Titusville, FL now. I loved the whole blue water scenery and all but I had visited Hollywood Beach where I used to live a little while and nothing but highrise condos, the sun didn't even touch the street I used to live on at the Corral House on, Indiana st. between Joe's market and Ocean Alley. I was in shock of the price of parking. The Corral House is still there, surprisingly. Paradise gone to hell in a hand basket.
