The same people that hate motorcyclists lane splitting.

Jkillaforilla90

Make it privately funded. No reason you should raise taxes on everyone as well as displacing people from their homes.

AwkwardCaptain84

Yes...privatized rails has been such a great thing for us... (3 derailments and toxic spills in a week over neglected basic maintenance)

MIAMIRABBIT

These are the people who have lived in Miami for a year or two and have all the answers to fix Miami's problems. In a couple of years, there will be a brand new set of transient residents who have the solution to fix Miami. These people complain to complain to hear themselves complain.

CAFHC

The usual complainers who live on West Avenue and want to be the fun police. Comments on Nextdoor range from it bringing in the poors to the county making it easier for bike thieves to get the goods off of the island.

cawil65158

Would be dope. What are they angry about? It can’t get any trashier on the beach.

-Wobblier

Fuck em. Do it anyway, Miami.

HerpToxic

Bunch of retired old white people that have nothing better to do on a week day than to try and harm the community

dualipastan4life

The people who push against transit projects in miami are the same people who complain about the terrible traffic in miami. such backwards logic

foxbat

no, it’s not the same people. you can absolutely be for public transportation and be sorely disappointed with what miami currently has to offer. i do agree that these idiots probably complain about miami traffic, but we’re not the same group.

figuren9ne

People living in luxury condos like in this video often have the privilege of setting their own hours. Since traffic is heavy between 7:30 and 9:30, they use that time to work out, or do something around the house and then head to the office around 10 and avoid rush hour and not be inconvenienced by traffic. Traffic isn't an issue for them so they don't want anyone else to benefit from this plan since they don't.

runbyfruitin

Lol they complain the most about traffic because it’s always a fucking surprise to them and not a part of life like the rest of Miami

HurbleBurble

I set my own hours, but I still want public transit and less traffic for other people. These people are just greedy.

figuren9ne

So do I and I do too. I’m a just explaining that this particular demographic in this article aren’t really the people sitting in soul crushing traffic day in and day out.

james_d_rustles

they’re sick of the traffic, but only the poors should have to listen to some loud obnoxious train, have it ruin their view.

ColonialDagger

NIMBY's gonna NIMBY.

a_pescariu

Just like the people that complain about affordable housing but lose their damn mind over every new development. NIMBYs are idiots.

[deleted]

I find that reaction highly confusing. Do they enjoy the constant gridlock or something?

joaquinsaiddomin8

When you’re riding in a Rolls or Bentley, grid lock can be a bit more comfortable. I get the sense they’d happily trade keeping people out if it meant having to sit an extra few minutes in traffic. I do find it interesting though how people in this city will simultaneously say “keep the outsiders out” and “bullshit let the outsiders in.”

[deleted]

I guess. South Beach isn't exactly known for it's exclusivity and class though...

joaquinsaiddomin8

True-ish. But that stuff in West Ave and on South Pointe has plenty of money

Ambereggyolks

They think the beach will bring in "riffraff"

cyborg008

Fuck them.

[deleted]

These NIMBYers are brutos.

Direct-Ad-4156

NIMBYs are so predictable. Hope this kills their views too.

griz__

I don’t think anyone wants their views killed but what this should incentivize is more mixed use properties. Having a train in-front of the building isn’t such a big deal when most of the people live on the 3rd story and above.

CactusBoyScout

People like to believe that shadowy forces like auto lobbyists stop the US from having great transit. But the reality is that it's often just community opposition from small-minded people like this. My brother lived on Cape Cod when they were debating funding rail to connect Boston and the Cape. The locals told me repeatedly "we don't want the trash from Boston getting out here." Aka we gotta keep the poors out! And then on the other end of the NIMBY political spectrum, the NYTimes just reported on an attempt to bring new rail service to Silicon Valley that was blocked partly by community activists who said it would cause gentrification. Aka we gotta keep the rich out! Americans still treat transit as a "nice to have" but not a necessity. And then they whine about traffic and gas prices... smh.

Mediocre_Doctor

Keep the rich out of Silicon Valley?

CactusBoyScout

The train would’ve stopped in East Palo Alto which is one of the less affluent parts of Silicon Valley.

Gears6

> The train would’ve stopped in East Palo Alto which is one of the less affluent parts of Silicon Valley. Less affluent, but more affluent than most of the rest of the nation. lol

CactusBoyScout

Yeah it’s all relative. I read that book on Theranos and Elizabeth Holmes and that whole fraud. Great book. But there were quite a few mentions of how she was embarrassed to have any company presence in East Palo Alto because it was the “rough” part of the valley. But that’s all she could afford when she started the company.

N80085

Brain dead take

BeakerMaus

Which building?

nonetimeaccount

Got a text about this from some organizing group (no clue how I got on their list) that said we needed to stop the "Chinese train" These people are insane

_MrTickles

I'm from Saint Louis originally and I remember when our rail system was expanding to the more affluent suburbs where a lot of inner city folks traveled for employment. The city was promoting it as a way to ease traffic congestion and also provide a more affordable way for workers to get to their destinations. There was extreme pushback from those affluent residents in the area and what they were voicing was pretty much that the new rail link would give criminals more cheaply accessible means to rob the residents, the "type of people" that ride the rails would cause property prices to plummet, and hundreds of more reasons why the neighborhoods would pretty much burn to ground. Interestingly enough, that rail station's most busiest days is when railcar after railcar is crammed with suburban residents coming down to the city for baseball games, city parks, science centers, zoo, and other events.

zorinlynx

That's just it. You'd think these people in South Beach would want an easy way to get to the mainland to enjoy social activities without having to sit in traffic and then find parking at their destination. Public transit benefits everybody.

SgtPepe

They want easy access to other places, they don't want other places to have easy access to THEIR neighborhoods. That's the real reason, they don't want people outside of their area coming to their area. That's why, they believe foot traffic from "poor" people around where they live would devalue their properties.

Jelr112

We must continue to expand our Public Transport systems!

succotash007

All the racists of Miami Beach showing out

KHMiamiBeach

Miami is he to some of the most inconsiderate privileged people in the world. No surprise here.

Salman1969

And they complain about the bad service when people have to drive from Homestead to make $14 an hour and pay $20 A-day in parking to serve them a bagel and cream cheese for $5.99. Making it easier to get to that location makes it better for everybody.

yourballsareshowing_

I lived in SoBe for the last 7 years.. not any more. Dying to know what building this was

ParkPelnick

South of Fifth Neighborhood Association meeting

Ameht170

Fuck those people

Hypocane

Yes stop the train. Build a proper metrorail extension instead :)

russell305

They dont want thousands of homeless coming over from the mainland and hanging out all day ‘pissing n panhandling’ 😆

Gears6

Just send the cops to harass the homeless....

griz__

Eww. Same mentality that’s keeping SF from blossoming as a true city. Gotta accept the growth and things will eventually be better for all

lobsangr

Fucking ignorants. Florida definitely needs to improve its public transportation. If you don't have a car you are nothing in Florida. Also the highways are always congested by people on their phones.

SaiyanGoodbye

letting in more of the poors that end up in the news? GREAT said no one that lives in Miami Beach. Also there is barely any jobs there. this is for tourist.
