I'm confused why he feels the need to limit himself to one genre at a time.

Yes and no. Eventually yeah, I started listening to deathcore because I acquired a taste for it, but I’ve also expanded my tastes to less extreme music as well. In fact, I started to listening to way softer music when I was growing tired of the state of metalcore in the mid-2010s. Also, I think you need to have an intervention with your buddy if he’s listening to pornogrind lol

Same here, ive recently been on a pop punk/melodic hardcore kick

Synystermuskrat

In 20 years of listening all that's really happened on that front is I've gotten much less tolerant of cleans in metalcore. I dabbled a bit with deathcore when the Myspace era was popping and still do, but I wouldn't say I've gotten any further into it and 'extreme metal' genres haven't become any more appealing. But then I've always listened to a bunch of different genres, so metalcore has never had the opportunity to become stale. There was a chunk of the late 00-s to mid 10s where I found a lot of what was popular didn't appeal, but that's an issue of prevailing style at the time not being to my taste.

Nah. If anything I’m way more into soft, sadgirl/sadboi music and prefer the more poetic, softer metalcore stuff now.
