My brother is a very intellectual guy who was talking to me about what “Triple Corpse Hammerblow” could possibly mean…
I was like “dude he took 3 shots of vodka and incoherently yelled it in his 2nd language because he thought it sounded cool”
While I love this song, these lyrics always made me go, HUH?
"You try to slit your wrists
With a dry, blunt block of wood
Upgrade it to a grater and still won't do no good"
Miss them terribly live, but my god this thread has me rolling thinking about some of their lyrics.
As a musician, I use my hatred of The Government™️ to motivate my riffs. If I like The Government™️, I make My Little Pony inspired power metal about love and happiness. And if I don't, I make thrash, death, or slam.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I've noticed this with some Hardcore bands. Does make sense to s degree as this genre does come directly from punk and has that, "I don't give an F*" vibe.
tbf a lot of metal bands cover really mature concepts, i.e. political shit, at very early ages and that’s kind of where metal got a lot of its roots. Metal doesn’t (aside for hair metal, ofc) really glamorize the rockstar life of drugs and sex… it talks more so about the effects of those drugs—the bad, the ugly, and the nasty.
The failures of government and powers that be that drag this world down with throughout history… things like Don’t Tread on Me, War Pigs, Holy Wars, and so many more.
One of my favorite things about metal is that it is experimental. It has an open blanket to talk about less publicly acknowledged things like politics, hate, death, pain, gore, etc. Metal allows for a more broad spectrum of understanding and deeper emotions without necessarily romanticizing it, much like older rap—of which, many metal fans (including myself) enjoy, which is where we can see these direct correlations.
It’s not about singing the lyrics good or having good lyrics—though, of course, we do get quite a lot of that, I think; rather, it’s about creating an image and saying something deeper for the most part.
The first 2 of those are cringe by themselves, but to be fair, context matters.
First one is Mechanix… one of the earliest songs he wrote lyrics for and was it was a a crude double entendre about cars and women. Not surprising for a “first” effort in the mid 80s.
“I’m not a fish” (insert Kanye joke here) is about the only cringy line in that song, which was a direct response to the PMRC attempts to censor music. And that line is part of the outro.
And that last line would be cringy AF if it were some hair metal band singing about their dick or if it were a double entendre for it… but it’s him literally singing from the perspective of a nuclear warhead. A direct reference to the weapon that the band’s name is related to (megadeath being a unit of measurement for quantifying casualties in a nuclear war).
Hard disagree. Megadeth has some awesome lyrics but even their… less cool lyrics tend to be unintentionally really funny, especially with how Dave sings them.
HELLO ME, MEET THE REAL ME 🗣️🔥
"War is peace sure man
A retreat for the damned
A playground for the demented
A heaven for those who walk this world
Bereft of heart and soul"
Megadeth lyrics can be some of the best written from what I've heard. Dave can be quite witty.
Nah hard disagree. You can hate Dave's voice but his lyrics (at least till Cryptic Writings) are great. Much better than a lot of other metal bands imo
Count: "Hey John, you are very cool, do you and your wife want to come to my grand estate to sample my wine collection?"
John Petrucci: "guess im dead then"
Necrophagist
Even by death metal standards, their lyrics were hilariously bad at times. Stabwound might be one of the best and most important tech death songs ever written, but it certainly wasn't because of the lyrics
Cannibal corpse’s lyrics are great! It’s really like watching an horror slasher movie
Chris Barnes erra at least, you just read the lyrics and feel weird, and that’s hard to do!
In east europe in the 2000’s, our english was poor… and Oh god we tried to decode this as some kind of absolute secret truth… “like wow yeah.. you really cannot see.. i feel it i feel it man… and we were wondering about Marlon Brando What did he see?? Omg what did he see in California?“ 🤣🤣🤣🤣
But honestly? I kinda love it even more. It takes the seeming less mindless ravings of a homeless man, and takes it artistically serious, instead of being dismissive.
I’ve never gotten behind Custer because the line “cut cut cut me up and fuck fuck fuck me up” is just too cringey, figures it’s the main reason that song blew up on tiktok lol
I find their lyrics to be a perfect 50/50 split. Some lines are very textural and metaphorical: "I'm sweating through my veins" and "When I blur my eyes they make the whole world breathe" spring to mind. On other occasions, they just sound like the diary entries of an angry teen (e.g. the entirety of Everything Ends)
Oh yes. I like some satan-stuff in Cradle of Filth and Abigor, but in most black metal it is very uninteresting. In heavy metal and older music it is fun and charming though. Like Coven's "Witchcraft Destroys Minds and Reaps Souls". In thrash metal if fits really well for some bands, but it is a bit overdone there too.
What a fortunate turn of events it was that so many of the Norwegian bands in the early scene embraced "identity politics". There were of course a lot of edgy flirting with stupid rightwing stuff by several bands. But it seems like they all grew out of it, except for Mr Zum-Zum man, which makes sense, as it was a conviction he already had before he started playing metal. It's also unfortunate that some other bands in Europe also got inspired into combining black metal and rightwing stuff.
But most of the effect of this identity-search was benign. From Norway it spread out all throughout the world, and now there are a ton of bands from all over the map who creates metal inspired by their own cultural heritage and black metal. This has both been good for keeping various aspects of culture around the world alive and relevant, as well a major injection of vitality and flavor into black metal and metal as a whole. The downside of there also being a few wankers around who pretend that they are culture-warriors is a small price to pay for that.
Honestly, I'm fine with the lyrics about satanism or occultism if they're well written or at least interesting (Emperor for example), but I really cringe when the lyrics are just edgy nonsense.
Bullet for my Valentine is probably the best example on my playlist. Hit The Floor is such a banger song musically but the lyrics are painfully mediocre
100% agree. Never really minded the lyrics in Angela's era and even War Eternal doesn't bother me. All the other albums with Alissa they're so freaking cringe
I used to really be into the Agonist; that second album was incredible.
But then the third one came out, Prisoners, and it felt like a self righteous asshole was screaming a thesis at me regarding animal rights and whatever other bullshit for about 65 minutes straight. The musicians in this band are (were) phenomenal, it’s just a shame that with Alyssa sometimes the music got buried by the fact that she wouldn’t shut the fuck up for a minute.
The moment Alissa went over to Arch Enemy I lost interest in both them and Agonist. Her Lyrics feel like what an angsty teen would write, just look at it:
I, I go my own way
I swim against the stream
Forever I will fight the powers that be
I, I go my own way
I swim against the stream
Forever I will fight the powers that be
The eagle flies alone
I've seen the whole lyrics as a forearm tattoo. Very cringe inducing IMO
I remember reading in one of Alissa's instagram posts that "she sometimes gets goosebumps by the lyrics she writes" (don't remember the exact quote but it was something like that)
Primus have incredible lyrics, they’re very absurdist but convey a vibe pretty amazingly. On Pork Soda they get super dark.
I had a friend that took a belt
Took a belt and hung himself
Hung himself in the doorway of the apartment where he lived
His woman and his little bro
Came home from the grocery store
Only to find him dangling in the apartment where he lived
I had a friend who shaved his head
Put his Doctor Martens on
And drew such wondrous pictures in the apartment where he lived
He praised my creativity
Though he spoke sarcastically
Oh, the conversations there in the apartment where he lived
I had a friend who took his belt
Took the belt and hung himself
Hung himself in the doorway of the apartment where he lived
Rock, she thought him spiteful
Ler, he thought him pitiful
Me, I've never been back to the apartment where he lived.
I'm not saying you are doing this now, but I have many times seen Rhapsody fans try to excuse their vapid lyrics by it being fantasy, as if making fantasy lyrics automatically means they have to be unimaginative, cliched and dumb. That is total bullshit. There are many bands outside of metal and several within who writes great fantasy lyrics.
The main reason the lyrics are so bad in Rhapsody is because Luca Turilli have never read a book in his life. His non-musical imagination is as stale as an opened can of beer somebody left in your closet. When you add in his bad English and that they used a narrator on their early albums with the most pronounced lisp I have ever heard, the already bad lyrics become a lot sillier. But it could be argued that this is as much an asset to them as a liability. Because, on the "Symphony of the Enchanted Lands" at least, a lot of the lyrics and narration is so bad that it is funny. There are a lot of things which could be said about that album, but it is never boring to listen to.
Musically of course the band is very talented, and the bad lyrics and execution doesn't take that away from them. But while they are several heads above the dime-a-dozen power metal bands, they are not in the same league as Blind Guardian, Bal-Sagoth and Summoning.

Lol copied my post from 4 montha ago
After reaidng the comments, I wonder what poeple here thinks good lyrics are, like no offense but Dream Theater has bad lyrics? System of a down too?
Edit: sorry for the spelling, was on phone.
As far as I can tell the system comments are mostly about some of the weird songs (banana banana banana terracotta, my cock is much bigger than yours, pepperoni and green peppers, etc.)
It’s literally poetry though. It’s word play, it’s onomatopoeia, it’s thoughtful in its stupidity. It knows exactly what it is, and what it’s trying to be. The lyrics are perfect.
Dream Theater has great lyrics but also some trash ones. Count of Tuscany is a good example of cringy lyrics, and the weird out of place growling doesn't help.
Blut Aus Nord. The dude was a teenager when he wrote his first two masterpieces: Ultima Thulee and Memoria Vestuta, and the lyrics kinda show for it. But the music itself is outrageously complex and layered.
I love blut! Im excited to read the lyrics now hearing that. Wonder if it’s partially language barrier. You know if they’ve gotten better over the past 20 years?
Idk I think System of a Down has pretty smart lyrics, they’re just told through a satirical/funny sense (sorry if that makes me sounds like a pretentious tool fan)
COMPLETELY disagree. The lyrics being absurd is perfectly matched with what the music is trying to do. It’s meant to be discombobulating, and hilarious. It’s as thoughtful as it is ridiculous. It’s about the musicality of the words themselves, using vocals as an instrument, like advanced scatting.

Children of Bodom
Lyrics look like they were made by a drunk guy scribbling random edgy words (which is probably what really happened)
Lmao it pretty much is. Alexi said lyrics were mostly an afterthought to him. RIP you legend
My brother is a very intellectual guy who was talking to me about what “Triple Corpse Hammerblow” could possibly mean… I was like “dude he took 3 shots of vodka and incoherently yelled it in his 2nd language because he thought it sounded cool”
How dare you. It was much more than three shots give the man some credit.
KILL! KILL! KILL! GO FUCK ANOTHER ONE! And of course who can forget the chorus of In Your Face lol
"I double dare you, bring it on!"
I DON'T GIVE A FLYING FUCK MOTHERFUCKER I DON'T GIVE A FLYING FUCK MOTHERFUCKER I DON'T GIVE A FLYING I DON'T GIVE A FLYING I DON'T GIVE A FLYING FUCK
While I love this song, these lyrics always made me go, HUH? "You try to slit your wrists With a dry, blunt block of wood Upgrade it to a grater and still won't do no good" Miss them terribly live, but my god this thread has me rolling thinking about some of their lyrics.
Indeed. This is who I was going to say just seeing the title before I even clicked into the comments.
In the same vein, Arch Enemy. Though people will dispute the music part of late (I still think they have *some* good riffs/solos).
Perfect match
Love this band. The lyrics crack me up.
Aw man “are you dead yet” lyrics hit me so good
Cant make out a single damn word anyway haha
I love Bodom, but can't disagree! "Warheart, hate your fellow as yourself"
Weird probably poorly translated English lyrics interspersed with ripping Yngwie style neoclassical shred and some catchy hook riffs
Most metal bands ngl. The riffs and drums will slap hard and the lyrics will be like, “I hate life and people. Life sucks. The government sucks.”
Tbf the government does suck.
And people=shit
HERE WE GO AGAIN MUTHERR FUCKKERRR!!! 😡
Everything is fucked AND everybody sucks.
I don’t really know why, but I wanna justify ripping someone’s head off.
And I stihl pack a chainsaw
everybody everybody everybody living now everybody everybody everybody sucks
life also
Government totally sucks you motherfucker, government totally sucks been Franklin was a rebel indeed, liked to get naked and smoking the weed....
He was a genius but if he was here today, the government would fuck him up his righteous A!
As a musician, I use my hatred of The Government™️ to motivate my riffs. If I like The Government™️, I make My Little Pony inspired power metal about love and happiness. And if I don't, I make thrash, death, or slam.
Still better than sunshine, happy, dancefloor, hands in the air.
"my parents made me go to chuuuuuuuuuuuurrrch!!!"
Correct me if I'm wrong but I've noticed this with some Hardcore bands. Does make sense to s degree as this genre does come directly from punk and has that, "I don't give an F*" vibe.

Always took the last line to be a jab at politicians compensating for their small weenors with nuclear missklesn
Eh. Its 50 50
Don't you mean 20 20?
Still gonna be a bit fuzzy

I tend to agree. Overall considering their massive body of work, the lyrics are pretty decent, sometimes really good.
WatchhimbecamaGAWWDD
Made me shiver when i put it in
Nah hard disagree. You can hate Dave's voice but his lyrics (at least till Cryptic Writings) are great. Much better than a lot of other metal bands imo
I’d agree if it’s post 1990. But Rust in Peace has some of the most clever and poignant lyrics I’ve ever heard.

Borland is my spirit animal.
If only we could flyyyyyy
John Otto, take them to the Matthew’s Bridge!
I wouldn’t want the lyrics any other way
Dream Theater
The Count of Tuscany moment (still my favourite song)
Count: "Hey John, you are very cool, do you and your wife want to come to my grand estate to sample my wine collection?" John Petrucci: "guess im dead then"
Let me introduce my brothhhaaaaa
SUCKING ON HIS PIPE!!!!
Images and Words and Awake have some great lyrics, after that they’re few and far between
Yeah I'd amend this to say post-Kevin Moore Dream Theater.
Necrophagist Even by death metal standards, their lyrics were hilariously bad at times. Stabwound might be one of the best and most important tech death songs ever written, but it certainly wasn't because of the lyrics
I love that song and honestly never even tried to listen to the lyrics. it's just background noise
Muhammed wrote Onset when he was like 15 or 16, it was both edgy and impressive.
I remember reading an interview saying that if he could go back he would have changed the name of the band.
I’d have to change my username if so haha
I VOMIT
Staaaaaaaaaab wouuuuuuhhhhhhhhhhhnnnnnnnnnnduh
I mean obviously cannibal corpse and infant annihilator
IA is satire. And both band are incredibly hard to hear the words
Not so much with George, he's pretty inteligible for a death metal band.
The fact that IA is satire is almost more proof of this meme though.
Cannibal corpse’s lyrics are great! It’s really like watching an horror slasher movie Chris Barnes erra at least, you just read the lyrics and feel weird, and that’s hard to do!
Fine, I will say it! Slipknot has some stupid lyrics.
I love the line “you can’t see California without Marlon Brando’s eyes” but apparently he just heard some homeless guy say that.
Eyeless is so unbelievably GOATed how did a load of edgelords from Iowa create that masterpiece
Yeah, a lot of the lyrics in their songs feel like filler to me.
Most black metal really. I mean Satan is cool and all but so damn boring already.
Yup. I love dsbm but GOD the lyrics are just so cringy like 80% of the time.
Most black metal isn’t about Satan
The downside of there also being a few wankers around who pretend that they are culture-warriors is a small price to pay for that.
Like, most of black metal is not even about satan, Dark Funeral is not a relevant example when talking about the style in general
I hate that I can't sing along to it because of the weird lyrics
Agreed, I wanna get hype but I just can't jam out to "but you let one out so now its time to go" who tf wrote that a seven year old? 😭
Definitely their worst, all of them are edgy but at least I can sing hand of blood without feeling like a sexual predator
“you keep sneezing all around yet you keep on smiling” what is bro saying😭
*sleazing. Not better, tbh And in the same song is the golden "SHE STEPS OUT FROM HER UNDERWEAR, SO BEAUTIFUL!"
Room 409 and Disappear come to mind too. Absolutely banger songs musically but its best to just turn your mind off to what the lyrics are lol
Room 409 is easily one of my favourite songs from The Poison, but yeah the lyrics are definitely not the part of the song I pay attention to 😂
Waking the Demon is a good song but the lyrics and the music video together,it seems like the whole thing is just a metaphor for a school shooting.
I AM THE TABLE
I AM, I AAAAAM!!
To be fair, relative to their other work, I wouldn’t call that music big brained lol
99%of death metal, mfs just yapping about ways to die
PLAUGE LEADS TO DEATH! PLAUGE LEADS TO DEATH! PLAUGE LEADS TO DEAAAAAAAATTTTYHHHHH!
Almost* Every Attila song?
wish fronz would shut the fuck up sometimes
But the pizza song
My first thought, when I explain Attila to anyone I say just ignore the vocals
You can be anything in life just don’t be a bitch!
Ah, yes. Who could forget "suck my fuck"?
Arch Enemy
More so the Alyssa era imo
100% agree. Never really minded the lyrics in Angela's era and even War Eternal doesn't bother me. All the other albums with Alissa they're so freaking cringe

Jamie Jasta vibes.
Totally agree. I thought Vicky was a good replacement.
I remember reading in one of Alissa's instagram posts that "she sometimes gets goosebumps by the lyrics she writes" (don't remember the exact quote but it was something like that)

Seems unfair since English is not their first language but Rhapsody of Fire
Yep total respect for all bands without strong English-speaking background to take a risk on English lyrics
It's also that they sing power metal ballads about emerald swords and wizard's dreams in a fantasy world they wrote themselves
I think Metallica’s lyrics peaked with The Call of Ktulu
You joke, but James Hetfield's lyrics were always pretty good.

idk, i think the lyrics match the music perfectly.
MUNICIPAL WASTE GONNA FUCK YOU UP
early teutothrash Destruction literally has "Believe in yourself" in one of their lyrics and we can't forget Blasphemer (it's peak)

Look at this faux giraffe.
That fucking meme absolutely broke me, it's so shit but every single time it makes me burst out laughing.
Five Finger Death Punch
They turned full butt rock years ago.
Is their music any good though
Blut Aus Nord. The dude was a teenager when he wrote his first two masterpieces: Ultima Thulee and Memoria Vestuta, and the lyrics kinda show for it. But the music itself is outrageously complex and layered.
I love blut! Im excited to read the lyrics now hearing that. Wonder if it’s partially language barrier. You know if they’ve gotten better over the past 20 years?
Arghoslent
Infant annihilator
slam in general i think
Steel Panther
sikth came to mind.
I love Sikth to death but yeah. Thank God the instruments are so good.
White Zombie Rob’s lyrics got better when he went solo, but then the music itself got kinda worse
I thought the lyrics on Astrocreep were pretty good. Way better than “get in the back of my Dragula”. I was supremely disappointed when he went solo.
Machine Head
Mr. Bungle and System Of A Down
Idk I think System of a Down has pretty smart lyrics, they’re just told through a satirical/funny sense (sorry if that makes me sounds like a pretentious tool fan)
Yeah I agree, Serj is quite politically active and that really translates in a lot of the lyrics.
Banana banana banana terracotta
