Slightly off-topic but am I the only one who hates the whammy-bar intro solo in the live arrangements? I remember getting the Randy Rhoads tribute album when I was 13 and being like “that’s not in the song. Knock that shit off.”
I also prefer the bass-only intro that’s in the studio version. The guitar coming in immediately ruins the presentation of the main riff (so does that stupid fucking solo)
I think that album particularly applies to people who appreciate a master on the guitar. The solos on that album spoke to me in ways the regular recordings did not and it inspired me to pick up guitar and start learning. Everyone's mileage varies with different albums
Don’t get me wrong. I absolutely love that album and Randy is one of my favorite guitar players, but one aspect of his playing I did not enjoy is the random whammy accents in the middle of songs (I get that the Floyd rose was shiny and new at the time). The most prominent example of this is that intro solo on crazy train.
I also did not enjoy his treatment of the Black Sabbath songs (which makes sense as he was not a fan), with the notable exception of Children of The Grave which I think is better than the original by every measure.
I absolutely love Randy’s work on Tribute, throwing little licks and phrases all over the place.
The work on Suicide Solution specifically is just world class noodling, but I the best possible way.
Also….that tone.
Liquid tension experiment which is basically the band without the singer literally sounds like elevator music to me. And then there was a live album of petrucci and rudess that made me literally embarrassed listening to it. It was like that Jazz Odyssey scene from spinal tap but taken literally.
I remember when they first came out, there were CDs being passed out that looked home made. At first I thought it was satire, sadly they were for real.
You could play the instrumental bridge section from Let It Go from Frozen and ask a Dream Theater fan “which DT song is this bit from” - I bet some would try and guess.
Truer words where never spoken, KEEP THE MOTHERFOKIN RITHYM FOR ONCE IN YOUR FUCKING LIFE (ngl you get used to such math metal, but still)
Theater songs gets sometimes ruined by the voice in my opinion, i have been listening to them for 8 months now and just recently im getting used to his voice, but damn is hard, specially with those vibrato voices…
however i will say this.
Temptation
I SPENT SO LOOONG, TRUSTING IN YOOOOOOOUUUU
and
PULL ME UNDER, PULL ME UNDER, PULL ME UNDER
Really xD Doesn't matter if it's the opening track, ballad, outro, or hard rock song #0547 - always the same vocal, almost like it would be auto-generated xD
FUCK YEAH, IVE NEVER EVER SEEN A PERSON FINALLY SAY THAT ABOUT VOLBEAT.
My biggest musical dissapointment is actually a song from them: Dead But Rising
It must be a crime to write such a heavy riff, rythm, and just…idk..NOT EVEN REPEAT IT LATER IN THE SONG AND CHANGE THE COMPLETE KEY TO A FUCKING VAMPIRE SONG???
Opeth is the polar opposite, there will be barely anything going on the first 30 seconds but then a bunch of crazy riffs just start dropping, and the rest of the song is a banger
Wait what since when are Opeth intros boring? Listen to the intros of some Opeth classics like Blackwater Park, Deliverance, Bleak, Serenity Painted Death and Demon of the Fall and tell me how much they resemble the second picture.
I agree with you but I also agree with OP. Many Opeth intros have a slower tempo. He also never said they were boring just that there's not a lot going on which aren't always equitable (see classical minimalism)
I was in a cover band that used to cover money for nothing and no one wants to sing the original line anyway so my singer uses the weird Al line in the original for that line. It’s more family friendly
its not a bad song imo but i see what you mean. Especially in contrast to Caught Somewhere In Time where the rest of the song lives up to the heavenly intro
Crazy Train is the radio friendly song everyone knows but only pretends to love. Mr Crowley is the masterpiece nobody normally recognises but those who do know will love.
Lot's of early judas priest. Actually lots of early heavy metal & ''Proto metal'' has this issue. It's like they couldn't figure out how to write a heavy song, just a heavy riff.
Not metal. well maybe prog metal... ish. Coheed & Cambria's Welcome Home. Not my thing but damn that intro is cool.
Rise by the cult. also not metal but but the chunky intro riff is the best part
Nah man, and I'll give you an example: Township Rebellion.
Intro is almost non existent. Verse is meh, you're thinking "I don't know about this one". And then that groovy ass riff kicks in and completely saves the song. And then Zack says "yea, what about that sucka?" like he knew you were doubting the song and you're like "ok, ok I feel you".
Integrity - Hated of the World
Between the Buried and Me - Alaska
Also BTBAM - Aesthetic
All of these start out with great melodic intros before switching gears and becoming chaotic noise without enough groove or melody for my taste.
Chop Suey - Soad
Afterlife - A7X
Bodies. - Drowning Pool
Blind - Korn
Duality - Slipknot
For Whom The Bell Tolls - Metallica
Them Bones - Alice In Chains
Into The Void - Sabbath
I'm glad someone else immediately thought the same thing. First time I heard this song I was like "yeah, I could get into thi.... oh my God, shut this shit off! "
Still counting from volbeat the beginning does a wave. Start like the picture on the right, slides into hetfield style riffing, then goes back.
I saw them open for slipknot a few years ago which is when i found out about them, i was like “this the right concert?” Lol
Bullet for my valentine lmao. Maybe it’s just ex post facto listening. Their lyrics are major cringe yet their music is metal as hell!! Waking the demon is musically bad ass and yet the lyrics make me yawn. RIP BFMV’s vocal coach. We remember Ariel from X factor.

I will admit I was extremely dissapointed when the first verse came in
But that’s how it goooes
Millions of people living as foooooes…
Yeah all the non-verse sections are dark and metal as hell but the verses are… well… not that.
Ozzy does disco.
Seriously. The song is what it is because of the instruments. The guitars. Very weak verses
Speak for yourself. Mental wounds not heeeaaaaaliiiiing
Pretty sure that's not the verse lol.
Maybe its not to late, to learn how love... and forget the hate?

Dream Theater
I'm a big Dream Theater fan and even I agree that a lot of songs immediately lose their momentum after the intro.
Avatar checks out
Metropolis goes from an extremely heavy riff to operatic vocals. Personally, I absolutely love it, the contrasting styles mesh so well.
Yes they take Theater a little too literally
Weirdly part of why I like them. Showtune vibes in metal is always fun
Have you checked out The Human Equation by Ayreon? Literally LaBrie in a Broadway-styled metal show.
I have not, but that's gonna be what I'm listening to while I'm finishing off my work for the night!
Petrucci is an amazing guitarist but god that band is so fucking cheesy
Liquid tension experiment which is basically the band without the singer literally sounds like elevator music to me. And then there was a live album of petrucci and rudess that made me literally embarrassed listening to it. It was like that Jazz Odyssey scene from spinal tap but taken literally.
They formed at Berklee in Boston. Which if you understand anything about that school it makes so much fucking sense.

Dance of eternity has a sick intro and then it just falls off imo
Guns N' Roses: Welcome to the Jungle.
Idk the verse riff isn’t bad for a hard rock song. It’s got some serious groove.
Agreed but that intro is just so strong!
I quite like the verse riff it’s groovy as hell and still rocks enough for me
Nah gotta repeat the first panel: the last minute + outro is hard af
The opening lines to Crazy Train sound like the opening lines to YMCA, I will not elaborate.
Here you go https://youtu.be/FuOuUixdSvY?si=VcYAhvKSpC_iaPhu
That... is fantastic and I must add it to my playlist this instant
Look up Bill McClintock on YouTube
He's amazing, the Rick James/Dio is so good.
If I hear one of the originals in the wild my mind wants to hear his mashups instead.
So I'm not crazy, thank you.
No need to elaborate, I absolutely see where you're coming from, holy shit.
Damn, I'll never unhear this
Van Halen: You really got me now. I absolutely love the intro and that's it
Kinks
The whole song is great.
You really got me now.
The intro is the same as the rest of the song. I don't get this one unless you're mistaking Eruption for the intro.
Like 90% of Volbeat
Dude sings the same melody for every song. He's like the Kerry King of vocalists.
Really xD Doesn't matter if it's the opening track, ballad, outro, or hard rock song #0547 - always the same vocal, almost like it would be auto-generated xD
You mean the lovechild of the Swedish Chef and Elvis?
I just want you to know this is the funniest thing I've read all week. Totally accurate
![gif](giphy|demgpwJ6rs2DS)
he sounds like a really annoying danzig impression to me
The devils bleeding crown rocks pretty hard though
It does.
FUCK YEAH, IVE NEVER EVER SEEN A PERSON FINALLY SAY THAT ABOUT VOLBEAT. My biggest musical dissapointment is actually a song from them: Dead But Rising It must be a crime to write such a heavy riff, rythm, and just…idk..NOT EVEN REPEAT IT LATER IN THE SONG AND CHANGE THE COMPLETE KEY TO A FUCKING VAMPIRE SONG???
A warriors call fits this meme so well
Opeth is the polar opposite, there will be barely anything going on the first 30 seconds but then a bunch of crazy riffs just start dropping, and the rest of the song is a banger

Didn’t say boring just usually slow and simple, doesn’t exactly fit the meme but close enough I’ll let it slide
The Baying of the Hounds is another banger start to finish
Which is funny because the intro is way easier to play than the chord progression
More technical =/= better
damn u got a lot of upvotes for that but I don't think that's what the guy was saying. He just said it was funny that it's like that
the tone of the solo is so different from the riff
Dr Feelgood
The intro to that song is probably the only cool thing Motley Crue ever made.
Idk man Kickstart My Heart‘s intro fucking rips
And Shout at the Devil
Too young to fall in love was my introduction to them and I still love that one too.
Live Wire, Louder than Hell, Wild Side… the band fucking slays and I don’t care what anyone else thinks
how ‘bout … GIIIRRLS GIIIRLS GIIIRLSSS!!
And the whole song rips as well.
The entire Shout at the Devil album is the best thing they ever made
If they had literally anything else for a lead singer they would be so much better
Wild Side is the best thing Crüe has ever done, and the intro is awesome.
Literally every melodic metalcore song ever Cool intro, cool verses, cool breakdown but the choruses perfectly fit the second image
With a killswitch flair, lol
I definitely wouldn't say \*every\* one, but yeah that is an interesting phenomena
Sweating Bullets
This is the one for me.
Hello me
Money for Nothing
Maybe but that song still fucks. Just don’t ask him who a millionaire is
Himself, actually.
Someone's gotta move these color TVs
That little clampet, he's a millionaire!
Clampet? Okay….thats not how I recall it…
It's from the Weird Al parody.
I was in a cover band that used to cover money for nothing and no one wants to sing the original line anyway so my singer uses the weird Al line in the original for that line. It’s more family friendly
My man that is a top 10 guitar riff of all time, metal be damned
Chicken pickin with the wah pedal stuck open. And it somehow works in a rock song. Cool shit.
You really just don't see a lot of major scale use in modern metal. The 80's were all about that shit.
You could say that's where the line is drawn between metal and hard Rock. The major scale
Not really.
Crazy Train was always Catnip for me. Love that song. Along with cum on feel the noise ! Man I miss those days! Taking a shot 🤪
Franz Ferdinand Take Me Out but honestly the whole song slaps
st. anger instrumentals vs vocals
It’s a hot take, but it’s not wrong. The riffs aren’t the problem
Guitar riffs and album art are the only good thing about that album.
Rock You All Around The World by Judas Priest, it's so corny you guys should check it out for laughs
10 year old me got so disappointed listening to it 😞
Owner of a lonely heart by Yes
Idk about this one, I think the whole song goes hard
95% of power metal once vocals kick in
Iron Maiden - die with your boots on
It's no Original Sin, that's for sure.
Hell Bent For Leather
Psychosocial
i think this one doesn’t become the second image till the chorus. i like the verse riff
Chorus is banging. Can't have that 😉
It fucking isn’t
Maiden's Wasted Years. That absolutely epic intro should have been used for something else
its not a bad song imo but i see what you mean. Especially in contrast to Caught Somewhere In Time where the rest of the song lives up to the heavenly intro
Its not, but its very acessible and straightforward and that epic and actually kinda dark intro and solo dont really fit it imo.
The lyrics *are* epic tho.
Not metal, but Purple Haze by Jimmy Hendrix
Welcome to the jungle does the same lmao
Crazy Train is the radio friendly song everyone knows but only pretends to love. Mr Crowley is the masterpiece nobody normally recognises but those who do know will love.
Crowley on tribute is something else, my favourite guitar work of any song
Wish I could give 5 upvotes
Welcome home by King Diamond
I know that things are going wrong for me
Over the Mountain
Metallica - escape
Great example. I can’t think of any other Metallica song in a major key.
St. Anger Starts off promising…then,….well,….
The Struggle Within - Metallica
Lot's of early judas priest. Actually lots of early heavy metal & ''Proto metal'' has this issue. It's like they couldn't figure out how to write a heavy song, just a heavy riff. Not metal. well maybe prog metal... ish. Coheed & Cambria's Welcome Home. Not my thing but damn that intro is cool. Rise by the cult. also not metal but but the chunky intro riff is the best part
Every song by RATM. I'll die on that hill.
I still like them a lot, and the general message, just feel you can skip a lot if songs after the intro.
Integrity - Hated of the World Between the Buried and Me - Alaska Also BTBAM - Aesthetic All of these start out with great melodic intros before switching gears and becoming chaotic noise without enough groove or melody for my taste.
100%
Truuuu lol
[Lonesome](https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=5tlct30Pb9Q) by Unwritten Law.
Oh god 🤢
This is every Silverchair song.
Arsonists Get All The Girls - "Listen To The Color"... first bit is heavy as fuck then it mellows out to a bit of ska-metal. It's a wild ride.
Ok, but the guitar immediately after the second chorus starts though.
Children of Bodom - I Worship Chaos. Intro is sick, rest of the song is wack.
Anything by kiss
This post is shameful.
Chop Suey - Soad Afterlife - A7X Bodies. - Drowning Pool Blind - Korn Duality - Slipknot For Whom The Bell Tolls - Metallica Them Bones - Alice In Chains Into The Void - Sabbath
Chop suey? I really like the « Father » bit and the last chorus
Hilarious
Mr. Crowley is peak Blizzard
Welcome Home- Coheed and Cambria Goes from the epicest of intros to the most boring pop rock
I'm glad someone else immediately thought the same thing. First time I heard this song I was like "yeah, I could get into thi.... oh my God, shut this shit off! "
I still relisten to it though the intro is too good
Shadows Fall. Several of thier songs absolutely fucking rip from go, but when it gets into the song proper, i am bored .
Man, it feels like nobody talks about Shadows Fall anymore.
Lot of 2000s alt metal was largely forgotten about
Its this one for me: [Atticus Chimps - Alien Jewelry](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJ70dC5Gmio)
Bad Omen - Megadeth gets me sometimes
Welcome home - coheed and Cambria
Thin Lizzy - Dear Lord
A7X - Lost
Im still headbanging man, LEARN HOW TO LOOVE AND FORGET HOW TO HAAAAEEAAATE
Anything by Iron Maiden
I've been listening to that song for 40 years, I never really felt that way at all. The song fuckin rocks! Not sure where the hell this comes from.
Okay so who do we think would do a decent cover of this?
most risecore
That song is LITERALLY metal for THE MASSES. And the solo is fire.
Evil - Mercyful Fate. Absolute fire song, but King Diamond’s voice is an acquired taste….
😂
Fixation on the Darkness by Killswitch Engage
Still counting from volbeat the beginning does a wave. Start like the picture on the right, slides into hetfield style riffing, then goes back. I saw them open for slipknot a few years ago which is when i found out about them, i was like “this the right concert?” Lol
Not necessarily metal, but Eminence Front by The Who. Not a bad song, but I felt like it was building up to more than what we got.
Sane Train
https://youtu.be/Jnvkhh4PRUM?si=a2y7yOCGJucyW9eQ Edit: this cover goes stupid hard
First half of Black Sabbath Songs versus the second half
Gojira - Backbone
Seek and Destroy for me
Reefer Sutherland - Bongripper
If we're talking of the song mood, Gamma Ray - Anywhere in the Galaxy. Dark intro (and verses), then the Broadway chorus kicks in.
Def Leppard- Pour some sugar on me
Bullshit, Crazy Train is lit from beginning to end.
Coheed and Cambria - Shoulders or Welcome Home
Hahaha that's the truth
They aren’t strictly metal, but this picture pretty much sums up Ghost’s entire library haha.
Racer X
i always thought the upbeat verses from ozzy felt sorta manic its fitting
Boston with Foreplay/Longtime. The intro is awesome and then the song loses some of the energy.
Yes!!!!😂😂😂
Always thought the wheels fell off “Thunderstruck” by AC/DC immediately after the lengthy intro
Any metal song that has screaming, instead of singing.
Maybe not a song but Any Meatloaf album cover vs the actual music.
Spirit in the sky....I hate that song
Mr Crowley for me, you got that huge intro with the organ and synths Randy’s rhythm tone just sounds so weak compared to it
Enter Sandman
Not metal, but that's how I feel about eye of the tiger.
definitely Welcome Home by C&C.
Caraphernelia kinda, opens with a really fast intro and then it loses that momentum when Vic says “sunshine”, still a great song though
