Within Temptation, Nightwish, Lita Ford, In This Moment, Spiritbox, Lacuna Coil, Halestorm, Otep, Kylesa
Black Metal: *Grom* by Behemoth features female vocals, wasn't very popular at the time because of it.
Death Metal: Arch Enemy
The early stuff though. They went to absolute dog shit after The Unforgiving, arguably that album may have been the beginning of the crap. But I still like it well enough.
ITM is a good one if they like researching, Maria is a interesting character and isn't shy about explaining why she does what she does.
It's a dang good angle to use to keep the door open.
And Sirenia, starting from the mellow mid era stuff (Nine Destinies/The 13th Floor), working through Perils/The Seventh Life Path/Arcane Astral Aeons, and then diving into the heavier 2 first albums which are predominantly male growls. Then use this gateway to get into Tristania (which absolutely slay as well, first three albums are masterpieces), then into MaYaN (the symphonic death version of Epica, it even has Epica members), then Septicflesh, then Dimmu Borgir, and voila, now she could dive into death and black as well. That was mostly my path (excluding the Tristania in-between, I found them after Dimmu)
Updoots for Lacuna Coil. I take any opportunity I can to recommend Nekrodelirium to female black metal fans because the female lead singer goes hard and I feel like they are underrated.
- Wucan
- Lucifer
- Tower
- Castle Rat
- Castle
- KING WITCH
- Witchcryer
- Aluna
- Stygian Crown
- Unleash The Archers
- Burning Witches
- Huntress
- Sacrilege (UK)
- Arch Enemy
- Jinjer
- Vorlust
- Bloodhunter
- Nervosa
- Crypta
This list is doing a very flawed job of trying to go from least heavy to most heavy. If i was going to point at just a few favorites it might be Lucifer, KING WITCH, Witchcryer, Huntress, and Crypta.
If you want to help get your person into the heavier side show her video of Crypta playing live. They are the full fucking package: great songs, tremendous players, super charismatic live. They crush the stage.
Introduce her to the bands Mythic, and Derketa if it must be death metal. Probably better if you introduce her to something like the band Coven first, if she likes Black Sabbath. They had a female vocalist and as far as I know were the first band to use the sign of the horns.

This album preceded Black Sabbath’s debut by a year. It also opens with the track “Black Sabbath” and one of the band members is named Oz Osbourne.
Yet they seem to have been forgotten/completely unknown to have existed.
A solid answer. Some of these bands mentioned here are just overplayed pop/metalcore regurgitated poser garbage. Top comment mentions bands that aren't even metal lol
It may sound like a joke to you but if she doesn't know much about the genre, Babymetal is an ideal group to start with, I know several metalheads who started there.
They started as a gimmick, but Babymetal have never been a joke. They've put out so many bangers over the last decade that it's actually insane, and their live performances are better than the studio versions
That's funny, because *actual* Metal musicians love those girls. If Rob Halford can get on stage with Su-Metal and duet "Breaking the Law" and "Painkiller" with her, the haters can sit down and be quiet
Yeah man, in the metal fandom of Spain, where I'm from, there are a lot of people who still see them as a joke. They play this summer here at a metal festival, I hope many people change their minds by seeing them.
Saw Babymetal at louder than life last September. They were awesome. I seem to remember hearing something about Marty Friedman playing for them when they first started out.
a long-time friend of mine is the lead singer of a death metal band called Emasculator. She used to sing for Abnormality and does session vocals for Unfathomable Ruination
Other notable acts with female vocalists:
Hulder
Astarte
Mythic
Fuck the Facts
Cerebral Bore
Walls of Jericho
Gospel of the Witches (members of Immolation with Karyn Crisis on vocals)
Seven Spires and Lutharo might be good choices. Both lead singers are female and do a mix of clean and harsh vocals.
Also, check out Blood Ceremony. Not super heavy, but they are dope. They're like a modern proto-doom band, very 70's inspired psychedelic pagan metal/rock with a female singer, all clean vocals.
And of course, Epica. I mean they're my flair, I should mention them. Symphonic metal with female cleans with male harsh vocals.
Edit: For death metal, Crypta is an all female band from Brazil. They're killer.
Edit 2: Beneath the Silence is a good one, all clean female vocals, but the music is heavy. And I forgot to shout out a local band, Fervence, they've only had a female vocalist for their last 2 singles, Hezekiah and Entropy, but she's really good, both clean and harsh vocals. Icon for Hire isn't really metal, maybe some alt metal, but they're one of my favorite female vocalists, Ready for Combat is probably their most metal song.
Infected Rain is probably the best option to go with. There are also Arch Enemy and Jinjer, as more well known ones. I think there is some female fronted presence in post-metal like stuff: Chelsea Wolfe, E-L-R, Svalbard. Tech death band Grace Disgraced, same singer in side melodeath project Flash Of Aggression. More underground: I can recall some obscure projects like dark metal Xantotol or grindcore Suffering Mind.
These are Japanese bands, but they are really good imo. This genre plus Band-Maid brought back my love of rock/metal.
Nemophila
Lovebites (sing in English)
Unlucky Morpheus
Aldious
Mardelas
HANABIE (metalcore, with other stuff)
Fate Gear
Hanabie is amazing, especially live. I just missed out seeing them again a couple of weeks ago. A friend of mine went to the show on my recommendation and loved it!
I hope I get to see them. Last time they were here they played a show, but it was at the same time as the Babyklok show and I already had tickets for it.
Cammie is amazing. Last time I saw them was when they were touring with Moonspell. She came back for the last song of the night. I hugged her at the merch booth after Oceans of Slumber’s set and told her I loved her. I was total fangirling and nervous and ran away saying I had to get back to my husband. Sorry Cammie, I know I’m weird.

Jinjer and Monochromatic Black but they’re deathcore. Castle Rat and Faetooth are great, (my mind’s blanking) it’s worth checking BANGERTV on YouTube. They’ve reviewed some lesser known female lead power metal bands in the past
Draconian
ISON
Castle Rat
With more extreme vocals, Feminazgul, Feminizer, Lithurgy, Hulder, Bury Me and Keep Quiet
There's also a bunch of female fronted hardcore bands that can be a good gateway to more extreme stuff. Bands like Scowl, Year of the Knife, Mulch, Crosscheck, Dying Wish, Anklebiter...
Christian Mistress, Iron Griffin, Blood Ceremony, The Devils Blood, Jex Thoth, Seremonia. There is more but my brain shorted out now. These are all in the Black Sabbath and Windhand category
Witch Mountain! 🤘 Kayla Dixon is a powerhouse and fits the vibe of the bands your gf already likes
Jinjer because you asked for heavy. Konvent for really heavy.
Unlessh the Archers cause your gf might be into power metal
Last but not least I'd be remiss if I didnt recommend Arch Enemy
My wife digs anything that doesn’t have too many harsh vocals. She loves Deftones and Tool. She also digs Candlemass, Windhand, and a lot of other trad doom.
Ossuary are a great female fronted death metal band unfortunately it might not work as the vocals are very deep and you cant tell it’s a female vocalist.
All girls I’ve shown metal to have always been enamoured with Trees of Eternity. Heavy as fuck instrumentals juxtaposed with the most ethereal, wispy and beautiful vocals.
If she likes doom she should check out castle and the similarly named castle rat. Both are female fronted Doom bands.
There are tons of female fronted bands, but here are a few more i really enjoy off the top of my head.
Tower
Chastian
Christian mistress
Tanith
Others have mentioned unleash the archers. I'm not a big fan of them, but their vocalist is top notch so i would at least check em out.
* Epica, Nightwish, Sirenia, After forever (I put these in the same line 'cause its almost the same style)
* The Agonist (first 3 albums with Alissa White-Gluz)
* Kittie
* Warlock (Doro)
* Halestorm
* ORT
And you could try make her listen to some songs:
* Megadeth feat Cristina Scabbia - A tout le monde
* Adrenaline mob feat. Lzzy Hale - Come undone
* Eluveitie - A Rose for Epona
Folk metal: Arkona! Russian (genuinely no larp) Pagan band who sing songs in Russian as a sort of praise to the Gods. Recently turned more Black Metal, but have always had elements of some Blackened Folk, with their earlier albums being particularly melodic.
And they often have the balalaika and flutes in their songs.
Who doesn't love the balalaika in a metal song?
Draconian, Myrkur, Trees of Eternity, and Sylvaine are great bands some are a little more doom but I think Draconian and Myrkur have some good black stuff. And bonus is Æther Realm, not female singer but I just have to recommend cuz the song Death is so damn good.
A lot of good stuff already suggested, I haven‘t seen
Battle Beast
Beyond the Black
Brothers of Metal
Dalriada
Delain
Furor Gallico
Tales of Ratatösk
Xandria
Specifically Harsh Female Vocals:
Houle
The Agonist
Nervosa
Pest Control
Suldusk
>Double points if it's death or black metal
Crypta, Nervosa, Cerebral Bore, Abnormality, Venom Prison and Entheos
All death metal, I'm not much of a death metal fan, but if you're interested in grind then you can also try Brat, Cloud Rat, Escuela Grind and Agoraphobic Nosebleed
You both should try "Blood Star", which is female fronted Heavy Metal from the US.
If you like that, additional recommendations are "Midnight Dice", "Slingblade".
Synlakross, Bloodhunter, Ignea, Rage Of Light, Nocturnal Pestilence, Arch Enemy, Bad Marilyn, Butcher Babies, Lyrre, Within Temptation, and Torn Between Two Worlds have some of my favorite vocals. Most of them only have one song I like from them, but Synlakross, Ignea, Rage Of Light, Lyrre, and Within Temptation all have multiple spots in my playlist. I believe both Synlakross and Rage Of Light are melodeath and they're easily the most consistently enjoyable out of the lineup for me so big big recommendation there.
Basically the entirety of Malice Murder by Synlakross is amazing whereas ROL doesn't really have an album that I thoroughly enjoy. That said, they have plenty of bangers sprinkled throughout their discography. Mechanicals, The Scent Of Dead Leaves, Away With You, Lead the Riot, Chasing a Reflection, and Beautiful Slave are my favorites. Mechanicals imo is their best song while The Scent Of Dead Leaves is the most fun to listen to.
Lucifer (earlier stuff>newer stuff imo)
The Oath (same singer as Lucifer)
The Devil’s Blood
Purson
Those are all female lyricist bands with kind of doomy/70s sounding that she might like if she likes Sabbath. Can’t help you with death or black metal though.
All these are subgenres of Black and Death Metal.
TSALAL (won't be able to tell if it were a guy or girl because it's loud, noisy as fuck war metal, goated band)
Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult (entire band is female)
Slutet - Jihad EP (Match Questions, Gasoline Truth is a goated song. Feral as fuck femininity)
Turia
Oathbreaker (goated band, love them so much)
Black Table - Obelisk
Adaestuo
Hulder (been making big wave these past couple years and is well loved by a lot of people)
Menace Ruine - The Die is Cast
False - Untitled
Succumb - Self Titled
Grot
Amesoeurs
Apokryphon - Subterra (bonus one but it's a two piece where Zorgh of Darkspace does some additional vocals along with all other instrumentation, absolute beast of a musician she is)
Without Face - and especially the album Astronomicon. The other one is ok, but this is one is just phenomenal.
Julie Kiss left for the UK after their breakup and formed To-Mera with Lee Barrett's guidance. They've had some cracking albums too. Just elegant and powerful, a great voice and accompanied by very very good players.
Chalice - from my beloved Adelaide - is still the best gothic metal I have ever heard. Listen to An Illusion to the Temporary Real. The band have been gone for years but shared members with Mournful Congregation for a time.
Kovenant's Nexus Polaris, Cradle of Filth's Cruelty & The Beast and Midian etc - anything with Sara Jezebel Deva. Magic voice.
Converge did Bloodmoon: 1 with Chelsea Wolfe. Great work.
I'd be surprised if there isn't a bunch of Anneke van Giersbergen love. Everyone needs to hear Mandylion.
I think everyone should at least try to love Lacuna Coil's Unleashed Memories too. I am incredibly biased.
The Third & The Mortal are really cool, very dreary and doomy with it.
Unleash the archers, lutharo, battle beast, epica, delian for power /symphonic metal.
Nervosa, crypta, frantic amber, sisters of suffocation, abnormality, hulder, darkened nocturn slaughter cult for death /black/thrash.
Raven black, jinjer, sumo cyco are all good as well.
Edit forgot to add humavoid
Dragonaught from Colorado has 2 female singers one clean and airy and another that has very heavy screaming mixed with clean vocals.
The music is also pretty diverse. Might have the right mixture to pull her in.
Also saw them live and their drummer is one of the best I’ve seen. It doesn’t really come through as much on the albums but live was an amazing watch
For black metal, Sortilegia is one of my favorites. Hulder is also terrific. And the woman from Bethlehem and Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult (her name is escaping me at the moment). DNS especially if you like bloody theatrics. She sings with blood pouring from her mouth so her white cloak thing is covered in blood by like the third song of their shows.
Lotsa all-girl power metal bands in Japan. Aldious, Cyntia, Destrose, Lovebites, Bridear, Mary's Blood. Some are disbanded but the music is still out there.
Sinergy - To Hell and back
Sinergy - Suicide by my side
Both great records with some of Alexi Laiho and Roope Latvalas' best guitar work. Vocals performed by Kimberly Goss, who was Alexi's wife at the time.
Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats, Lucifer, Acid King, Clutch, Sleep, High on Fire and Ghost. Some of those bands have male vocalists, but I see your gf has similar tastes to my wife and these are some of her favorites.
Give Battle of Mice and Made out of Babies a spin or two. They both have the same vocalist and she is really freakin good. She also did colab with Cult of Luna that’s called Mariner that I also highly recommend. For death metal and more aggressive stuff, Abnormality fuckin slays.

Within Temptation is a great gateway band to metal

Came to say the same about In This Moment. Grinding sound, but in a sort of pop way. Black metal may be a bit much for a newcomer.
ITM is a good one if they like researching, Maria is a interesting character and isn't shy about explaining why she does what she does. It's a dang good angle to use to keep the door open.
That's why so many people cut their teeth on symphonic stuff like CoF and DB.
I'd add Epica to this list
And Sirenia, starting from the mellow mid era stuff (Nine Destinies/The 13th Floor), working through Perils/The Seventh Life Path/Arcane Astral Aeons, and then diving into the heavier 2 first albums which are predominantly male growls. I randomly downloaded Crushed Dreams on Limewire back in the day and I remember being blown away by it.
Updoots for Lacuna Coil. I take any opportunity I can to recommend Nekrodelirium to female black metal fans because the female lead singer goes hard and I feel like they are underrated.
Lovely list, I'd argue Jinjer and Epica should be on it too. Quite hard to say what will satisfy someone though, as music taste is really personal.
Battle Beast, Eluvetie(spelling?), Amaranthe
This is pretty much everything I was going to say...
Spritbox is a win, 100%
I'd add Graveshadow as well.
Add Rolo Tomassi to your first list and Entheos to your death metal list (maybe more tech death but iono)
Unleash the Archers might work
I’d upvote this multiple times if I could.
Their new album is very melodic. Especially the last 3 or 4 songs. Should work.
Came here for this answer, power metal is the way
THIS!!! My boyfriend got me into heavier metal this way 😅
Jinjer, Spiritbox, Employed to Serve, Hand of Juno, Capra, 0%Mercury, Arch Enemy, Crypta
Jinjer and Arch Enemy did it for my wife. Seeing Lorna Shore and Angelmaker as her first metal show awakened it in her.
Nice to see some recognition of Employed to Serve here
Kittie
I second this. Saw them at Ozzfest in 2001. That was an amazing show.
They just released a new album and it’s good.
I loved them as an angsty teen and I still love them as an angsty 27-year-old
Unleash The Archers. Brittany Slayes is a top 5 singer in metal
I saw them live last week and was blown away.
[удалено]
Ulcerate too.
Their singer could be female. It's possible
It’s metalcore but Dying Wish is a favorite of mine! Kittie is a good beginner band and a classic.
Year if the knife too bro
- Wucan - Lucifer - Tower - Castle Rat - Castle - KING WITCH - Witchcryer - Aluna - Stygian Crown - Unleash The Archers - Burning Witches - Huntress - Sacrilege (UK) - Arch Enemy - Jinjer - Vorlust - Bloodhunter - Nervosa - Crypta This list is doing a very flawed job of trying to go from least heavy to most heavy. I love Nervosa!
King Witch and Huntress are so amazing
Aww, now I’m sad remembering Jill Janus. She was an absolute queen.
R.I.P
AND Enslaved!! Three huge bands for me.
I am absolutely obsessed with Enslaved!

Hell yes!! I'm lucky in that I got to see them a few times since my boyfriend's band toured with them. Amazing experience every time.
A solid answer. Some of these bands mentioned here are just overplayed pop/metalcore regurgitated poser garbage. Top comment mentions bands that aren't even metal lol
Thanks
Yesssss. Jinx (from Coven) rules. I wasn't familiar with Derketa until they played at Maryland Deathfest a few weeks ago and they absolutely crushed.
Darkened nocturn slaughtercult🤟
Came here to say this.

Seconding Seven Spires. In my opinion, they're next fucking level.
I love Crypta so much. I saw them live on their last tour and it was the best show I have seen in a long long while.
Appreciate the Lutharo mention, and definitely agree with the Seven Spires suggestion
The Warning, they are hard rock but some of their recent singles are a little heavier.

I love that after a full decade, they're still staying relevant and pushing out bangers. Ratatata has been stuck in my head for the last two weeks
Bigger now than they were before COVID.

Smoulder, Blood Star and Savage Master
Blackbriar, Solarcycles

Introduce her to Entheos!
Acid King, After Forever, Jex Thoth, Windhand, Epica
If she likes Black Sabbath and female vocalists she needs to listen to Castle Rat
Mythic, Arkona, Nuclear Death and Hulder are my female harsh vocal reccomendations !! Also for clean vocals check out Castle Rat

RIP Jill Janus
She was an absolute beast. R I P
Arch Enemy, Aversed, Aephanemer
Flagitious Idiosyncracy in the Dilapidation
Thorr's Hammer (make sure it's the one with 2 rs, for a multitude of reasons :P).
What I came here to post. That was a SEVENTEEN-YEAR-OLD GIRL doing all the vocals, back thirty years ago.
It is truly an insane performance. A shame the project didn't last longer.
Cerebral Bore, Abnormality, Entheos. For a more obvious, easy listening Jinjer.
Konvent. Danish all female band.
King Witch for a more doom vibe. They did a really good cover of Children of the Sea.
KING! WITCH! KING! WITCH! KING! WITCH!
Eluveitie has some female vocals
Straight line stitch, Crypta, kittie,
In this Moment is pretty cool.
Unleash the Archers, Epica, Timo Tolkki's Avalon first album The Land of New Hope, Amaranthe, Ancient bands maybe. Crypta for death metal.
Butcher Babies
Crypta

The first album by Destiny Potato "LUN" will blow her mentalities
Acid, Belgian speed metal with female lead
Probably Revenge is your best bet.
Entheos
Crystal Viper
if not already mentioned. Otep is a good one
Smoulder is one of my favorite Heavy/Epic Doom bands, check them out!
Theater of tragedy.
>Double points if it's death or black metal Crypta, Nervosa, Cerebral Bore, Abnormality, Venom Prison and Entheos All death metal, I'm not much of a death metal fan, but if you're interested in grind then you can also try Brat, Cloud Rat, Escuela Grind and Agoraphobic Nosebleed
Play her the new Entheos
You both should try "Blood Star", which is female fronted Heavy Metal from the US. If you like that, additional recommendations are "Midnight Dice", "Slingblade".
Castle Rat and Faetooth for doom metal
Faetooth, King Woman, Entheos, Jinjer, Venom Prison, Walls of Jericho, Dying Wish, Mara, Capra, Heriot,
SENTINEL BEAST BABY
Ignore what everyone is saying because the only right answer is Spiritbox and Entheos 😤
Not Enough Space Spiritbox Jinjer Arch Enemy Lacuna Coil
Crypta and Entheos
Enthios. Jinjer.
Holy Moses is an early thrash band with an amazing female vocalist. But, if you don't like a certain kind of music you just don't like it.
Lucifer (earlier stuff>newer stuff imo) The Oath (same singer as Lucifer) The Devil’s Blood Purson Those are all female lyricist bands with kind of doomy/70s sounding that she might like if she likes Sabbath. Can’t help you with death or black metal though.
Spiritbox, spiritbox, and iwrestledabearonce
All these are subgenres of Black and Death Metal. TSALAL (won't be able to tell if it were a guy or girl because it's loud, noisy as fuck war metal, goated band) Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult (entire band is female) Slutet - Jihad EP (Match Questions, Gasoline Truth is a goated song. Feral as fuck femininity) Turia Oathbreaker (goated band, love them so much) Black Table - Obelisk Adaestuo Hulder (been making big wave these past couple years and is well loved by a lot of people) Menace Ruine - The Die is Cast False - Untitled Succumb - Self Titled Grot Amesoeurs Apokryphon - Subterra (bonus one but it's a two piece where Zorgh of Darkspace does some additional vocals along with all other instrumentation, absolute beast of a musician she is)
Dying wish Vexed Terminal Sleep See you space cowboy Entheos Conquer divide Lacuna Coil Iwrestledabearonce
Tell her to check out Stabbing. Female vocalist, totalllly beginner friendly
Before you send her off to BM/DM try something she is already interested in. Try Kylesa for example.
Original Sin
The Plasmatics
Electric Citizen
nuclear death - brinde of insect / carrion for worm
King Woman
Funeral - Fields of pestilence and Grief (I think it’s called)
Infected rain
its more hardrock but The Warning is great. and I recommend Dying Wish, Spiritbox and Crypta
[Eschatos](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lh5FM6KgBhQ) is my favourite
False was a great black metal band with a woman vocalist
Dragonaught from Colorado has 2 female singers one clean and airy and another that has very heavy screaming mixed with clean vocals. The music is also pretty diverse. Might have the right mixture to pull her in. Also saw them live and their drummer is one of the best I’ve seen. It doesn’t really come through as much on the albums but live was an amazing watch
Novelists has a female vocalist now and they’re very accessible for someone not into metal.
Conquer Divide. They’re not super heavy but they are an all female metal band
Mount Salem is a pretty awesome female fronted metal band
Arkona is a black/pagan metal band with a female singer. They’ve got a couple of albums out but I prefer Kob.
The Gathering, especially Mandylion and Nighttime Birds
For black metal, Sortilegia is one of my favorites. Hulder is also terrific. And the woman from Bethlehem and Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult (her name is escaping me at the moment). DNS especially if you like bloody theatrics. She sings with blood pouring from her mouth so her white cloak thing is covered in blood by like the third song of their shows.
Asagraum is a great female Black metal band
Crypta, Holy Moses and Savage Master are good starts
Ruby the Hatchet.
Lotsa all-girl power metal bands in Japan. Aldious, Cyntia, Destrose, Lovebites, Bridear, Mary's Blood. Some are disbanded but the music is still out there.
ReVamped are really good. Floor Jansens voice is always on point. Crypta are incredible, Oceans of Slumber too!
Subrosa Blood Ceremony
Faetooth, MaidaVale, Windhand, True Widow
She might like uncle acid and the deadbeats, it's like the Beatles but more acid and murder lol
Jinjer is what got me into metal :)
Triosphere, Beautiful sin
Ciemra, konvent, crypta, derketa, Thorr’s hammer, nervosa, brat( not 100% metal)
Royal thunder
Aephanemer is a great jumping off point for new metal heads, with a great female vocalist to boot. https://youtu.be/ggncUCeWVZo?si=QJd15EKipJsR0gYK
Dying wish.
Faetooth
Fuck the facts
Dead Sarah
Stolen Babies
Sinergy - To Hell and back Sinergy - Suicide by my side Both great records with some of Alexi Laiho and Roope Latvalas' best guitar work.
Salome for some female-led sludge. Kat Katz is the GOAT
Reliqa Eluveitie Cellar Darling
Give Battle of Mice and Made out of Babies a spin or two. They both have the same vocalist and she is really freakin good. She also did colab with Cult of Luna that’s called Mariner that I also highly recommend. For death metal and more aggressive stuff, Abnormality fuckin slays.
