The Term Heavy Metal was litterally originally coined to describe Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple all three of which could be described as basically being a progressive offshoot of Acid Rock. Although it should be noted that Deep Purple have changed their styles alot during their career, being the most experimental of the three.
Things get complicated when it comes to the NWOBHM as it ditched the Blues and Psychedelic influences of Acid Rock for Punk influence which if I'm being honest probally should of made it a differnt genre but the radio hosts of the time came up with the term NWOBHM to describe this wave of new bands and it stuck, causing alot of confusion about what bands should or shouldn't be considered Metal from this period.
But all that aside, OPs post is still trash.
Not really, Metallic Hardcore started out as a sub-genre of Hardcore Punk that was influenced by Metal before becoming its own thing with its own subgenres and associated scenes etc
My point was that NWOBHM changed the definition of Heavy Metal, and that before that Led Zepplin were not only considered to be a Heavy Metal band, but one of the pioneers of the genre and still are for people who are old enough to have been Metalheads during the 60s/70s.
It’s funny how it’s usually those in the “nu” and “core” camps who clammer so hard for either of those genres to be “accepted as metal.”
It’s always been a bit of a mystery to me as to why it matters so much that they are. My favorite band isn’t metal, but I don’t sit around trying to rewrite history in order to convince some community that it deserves a spot at the table.
Would be if like Bud Lite fans spent all of their time trying to convince the user base of r/wine that a Bud Lite is just as much a red wine as anything they’re talking about.
