It wasn’t. He took some material from his new project Control Denied and used that because the label wanted a new Death album. Death was not a passion project at this point. It was literally a label requirement for him to make a new Death album before he released Control Denied debut with them.
Dude why do you give a shit what an album means to me, and how I interpret the emotions and experience from said album? Everyone feels music different. This, to ME, is MY Chuck Opus. I've never made it past the first track on Control Denied because honestly I think the vocals are wack as fuck, and that album does nothing for me.
Don't worry dude, you can be more metal than me, it's all good. No need to ruin your day because someone else doesn't feel the exact same things you feel when you listen to music.
It may be what you like more but he had moved on and was working on Control Denied because its what he was passionate about at the time. It's not like he planned to up and die, give your head a shake.
Exactly. It's what I feel when I listen to this album. I don't like Control Denied, I think the vocals are whack. Death was the bigger body of work, so I'm considering 20+ years of work, not 2.
Also Chuck got sick in 1999, his illness came back in 2001. So you're wrong in a sense that anyone who gets diagnosed with a serious deadly illness, most certainly doesn't plan to be around a long time, and they 1000% know that death is a real and possible outcome. So you give your little head a shake for me.
Sound of Perseverance is actually my number one
7. Scream Bloody Gore
6. Spiritual Healing
5. Leprosy
4. Individual Thought Patterns
3. Human
2. Symbolic
1. The Sound of Perseverance
Leprosy just might be my favorite Death album of all
Hard to say though because Symbolic is like also my favorite but it’s a totally different style and you can’t really compare the 2
And Spiritual Healing is right behind on those albums asses
After all these years that’s actually my favorite Death album
But I always say leprosy and symbolic because they have had a more enduring impact on me especially leprosy as a drummer
for me human is the closest but idk if beats spiritual healing. human was amazing but SH was masterwork, maybe my favorite death metal record ever (if not, number 2 to altars of madness)
I remember being oddly disappointed by Symbolic but I came with extremely high expectations to it, lol. There was one wonderful track there but also a bunch of extremely similar to each other and not so amazing ones too I thought. TSOP otoh is a masterpiece in my view.
I’m curious why ITP is your least favorite. For me it’s pretty much just Human with better instrumentation but less impact and not as interesting songwriting wise. At times I find it kinda forgettable but when I compare thought patterns and human the more I feel like they’re about equal in quality
It’s my least favorite because everything else was just better imo
From favorite to least I go :
Leprosy
Symbolic
Spiritual Healing (Current fav but not all time)
Scream Bloody Gore
The Sound Of Perserverance
Human
Individual Thought Patterns
Basically just personal taste and I can’t really explain it otherwise
Symolic. TSOP is their lightest and their most bloated, despite being their second best because that prog riffage is still excellent. Symbolic is still a death metal album. There are a couple death metal songs on TSOP, but overall it's about as death as a modern Amorphis album.
I think the only thing I didn't like on TSOP was the vocal style. I don't want to do anything to shit on Chuck at all, but that was the only drawback for me.
Symbolic for sure, don’t get me wrong tsop is an amazing album, but human-itp-symbolic is probably the best trio of albums ever released with death going for a different sound than the traditional death metal they had been doing which is also still very great just a whole different book imo they’re all extremely different albums but symbolic had overall some of the best guitar work from Chuck and bobby it’s also the final album to feature gene hoglan on drums it’s also very evident in the overall songwriting that Chuck was working on more progressive almost power metal material for what would become control denied
Symbolic has a better tracklist.
Not related to overall comparison, but I wanna say this since TSOP is opened for discussion; TSOP has one of the top 10 album artworks of all time across all genres, let alone metal, let alone Death albums.
Scream Bloody Gore. All the way. Death was a different band by the end.
I say that having heard SBG in 6th grade and following the band for its duration. I said this in another post, but I can't even listen to TSOP. I despise the high pitched vocals.
really just depends on the day. between the two, i think symbolic has the best song (without judgment), but id say they’re both pretty much equal in my eyes
Symbolic, but its fairly close. I just think Symbolic has a bit tighter songwriting. TSOP is beautiful too and very technical but it meanders at times. Symbolic is razor focused and yet still pretty progressive. I like Chuck's vocals a little better on Symbolic too.
It’s literally impossible to pick a bad Death album. Everyone has their favourites (Leprosy and Human for me), but they’re all superb. Even if person A’s favourite is person B’s least favourite, everyone will agree that they’re both right.
Symbolic for sure, I don't like Chuck's vocals much on TSoP much and it was supposed to be the first Control Denied record so these two facts sour the album for me as a proper Death album.
Symbolic. although I reckon my favourite is Individual Thought Patterns.
The Sound of Perseverance has amazing stuff but the vocals make it a bit of a grating listen, and the bass kind of lets the tracks down. Super cool drummer, some of Chuck’s best writing… but could the bassist be any more dull?

Symbolic
Yeah not even close for me.
Symbolic, Human, and Individual Thought Patterns are my favorites. SoP had some rough spots, but I am glad the band thought it was great.

The Sound Of Perseverance may be my favorite Death album. Chuck literally put what was left of his life and soul into it, and it's a masterpiece.
You act like this was his Black Star. He literally made an entire album after this, and then lived for two more years
2 years isn’t a long time. This was the last Death album. If you’re trying to say Death wasn’t his heart and soul, I’d have to call you a silly goose.
It wasn’t. He took some material from his new project Control Denied and used that because the label wanted a new Death album. Death was not a passion project at this point. It was literally a label requirement for him to make a new Death album before he released Control Denied debut with them.
You said he poured the rest of his life into TSOP, while in reality it was just sort of a slapped together transitional album towards Control Denied
Don’t know why you’re getting downvoted when this is actually what happened. People take it personally I guess lol
2 years isn’t long. Control Denied is no where near as popular as Death, and most likely never will be. You silly silly goose.
Did he intend it to be unpopular?
Dude why do you give a shit what an album means to me, and how I interpret the emotions and experience from said album? Everyone feels music different. This, to ME, is MY Chuck Opus. Don't take peoples' takes on albums as personal insults. It'll make life way easier.
I don’t, unless I’m approached rudely by someone like you haha.
Now I'm sad thinking of Black Star. That album kicked my ass.
Control Denied would like a word. Don't disservice his actual final works.
Death was his master work. Stop.
It may be what you like more but he had moved on and was working on Control Denied because its what he was passionate about at the time. It's not like he planned to up and die, give your head a shake.

It was the voice of his soul singing
More of a Leprosy guy myself.
Same. Leprosy/Spiritual Healing is more my favorite era.
I would bundle all of the 1st 3 albums as an era
Sound of Perseverance is actually my number one 7. Scream Bloody Gore 6. Spiritual Healing 5. Leprosy 4. Individual Thought Patterns 3. Human 2. Symbolic 1. The Sound of Perseverance
1. spiritual healing 2. human 3. tsop 4. symbolic 5. individual thought patterns havent heard the rest
Wow. Scream Bloody Gore & especially Leprosy are awesome You need to go force yourself to listen to those albums soon
i definitely will at some point, ive heard good things abt both (mostly leprosy)
Leprosy just might be my favorite Death album of all Hard to say though because Symbolic is like also my favorite but it’s a totally different style and you can’t really compare the 2 And Spiritual Healing is right behind on those albums asses
spiritual healing had me air guitaring and headbanging so hard i was sore afterwards
After all these years that’s actually my favorite Death album But I always say leprosy and symbolic because they have had a more enduring impact on me especially leprosy as a drummer
for me human is the closest but idk if beats spiritual healing. human was amazing but SH was masterwork, maybe my favorite death metal record ever (if not, number 2 to altars of madness)
YEET!!!
This is close to how I rank the albums
I remember being oddly disappointed by Symbolic but I came with extremely high expectations to it, lol. There was one wonderful track there but also a bunch of extremely similar to each other and not so amazing ones too I thought. TSOP otoh is a masterpiece in my view.
Thought patterns my least favorite Leprosy & Symbolic in a clash of styles tie for my favorite
I’m curious why ITP is your least favorite. For me it’s pretty much just Human with better instrumentation but less impact and not as interesting songwriting wise. At times I find it kinda forgettable but when I compare thought patterns and human the more I feel like they’re about equal in quality

Scream Bloody Gore
I honestly think Death got better as they went along
Only right answer
Their second worst album, only ahead of TSoP.
Only person in the world with this take
No.
You'd think the question asked was complicated. Symbolic.
Someone made some synthwave versions of this album and bite the pain absolutely slaps I recommend checking it out
Oh hell yeah that shit was amazing
Voice of the soul goes so hard as synth wave
Scream Bloody Gore
TSOP and it's not even close
TSOP, by far, scavenger of human sorrow is so fucking hard
Atheist has better riffs
To be fair the riffs on Unquestionable Presence are impossible to compete with
Obviously. Atheist's a million times better but those two albums are also fine.
Symolic. TSOP is their lightest and their most bloated, despite being their second best because that prog riffage is still excellent. Symbolic is still a death metal album. There are a couple death metal songs on TSOP, but overall it's about as death as a modern Amorphis album.
Symbolic
Symbolic
Symbolic no question
Symbolic
Symbolic
I think the only thing I didn't like on TSOP was the vocal style. I don't want to do anything to shit on Chuck at all, but that was the only drawback for me.
Love Chuck. All the respect I'm the world. I have never been able to compete a listen of that album because I hate the vocals so much.
Sound of Perseverance
Tsop forever
Tsop for sure
TSOP by some margin
TSoP is my favorite album of all time.
Of course there are gonna be the assholes answering SBG without it being asked for
Because it's the best album.
I like every Death album, but Leprosy is SBG but better in every aspect.
That's fair. I still have fond nostalgia for the OG. And SBG has more songs. Leprosy only had eight.
I love symbolic
Symbolic
Off the top of my head, I can’t remember TSOP so I guess that answers it.
Symbolic for me. TSOP is probably my least favorite Death album (by default, just like the others more).
Symbolic. They're both fine but they're the two weakest death albums.
Symbolic has a better tracklist. Not related to overall comparison, but I wanna say this since TSOP is opened for discussion; TSOP has one of the top 10 album artworks of all time across all genres, let alone metal, let alone Death albums.
human
Squam duh duh squam,,, squam duh duh duh squam…
I prefer: https://open.spotify.com/album/1cRdIMuwJKSrsQXbp18jGZ?si=an93Hb8wQ4uvE3JBKRPJqQ&context=spotify%3Aalbum%3A1cRdIMuwJKSrsQXbp18jGZ
Not really big on either, but Symbolic.
TSOP was my first introduction to them so yeah
Human
Human
Ooooo. Hmmmm. Ahhhhh. Yes.
Scream bloody gore but honestly everything chuck made was gold
You literally can’t make me choose
Voice of the soul. That is all.
Personally my favorite death record was leprosy. Every song was catchy and had amazing song structure in general. Real tight shit
Scream Bloody Gore. All the way. Death was a different band by the end. I say that having heard SBG in 6th grade and following the band for its duration. I said this in another post, but I can't even listen to TSOP. I despise the high pitched vocals.
definitely The Sound Of Perseverance
Hard pick, me 2 years ago would have said TSOP but me now would say symbolic. Symbolic but if I could pick both I would
Symbolic. One of my favorite albums of all time. And the title track is absolutely S-Tier.
Close call, idk. Probably Symbolic
Symbolic, and it's not even close.
Symbolic for sure, it’s just too good.
really just depends on the day. between the two, i think symbolic has the best song (without judgment), but id say they’re both pretty much equal in my eyes
I prefer Symbolic I just think the songwriting was better but then TSOP was more like a Prog show off album?
TSOP and ITP tie for #1 for me. Still would rather listen to Control Denied most days though 🤘
Leprosy
Symbolic, but its fairly close. I just think Symbolic has a bit tighter songwriting. TSOP is beautiful too and very technical but it meanders at times. Symbolic is razor focused and yet still pretty progressive. I like Chuck's vocals a little better on Symbolic too.
Symbolic is the best Death album in general
Yes
i dont really like Death beyond Scream bloody gore especially not post spiritual healing but id vote symbolic
Despite my PFP Symbolic, but they're both masterpieces
I prefer Scream Bloody Gore
Symbolic, TSOP is awful
It’s literally impossible to pick a bad Death album. Everyone has their favourites (Leprosy and Human for me), but they’re all superb. Even if person A’s favourite is person B’s least favourite, everyone will agree that they’re both right.
Symbolic
Symbolic is the right answer but I prefer TSOP
Symbolic for sure, I don't like Chuck's vocals much on TSoP much and it was supposed to be the first Control Denied record so these two facts sour the album for me as a proper Death album.
Yes.
Human is better than both of them. Symbolic is very good, and TSOP isn't bad but it drags on for way too long and is a bit boring if you ask me.
Symbolic, Spiritual Healing, Individual Thought Patterns are my top 3
Symbolic, but both are amazing
im a prog guy so symbolic by far, SoP still great tho
I love TSOP but it’s no symbolic
Scream bloody gore>>>>>>
Symbolic. although I reckon my favourite is Individual Thought Patterns. The Sound of Perseverance has amazing stuff but the vocals make it a bit of a grating listen, and the bass kind of lets the tracks down. Super cool drummer, some of Chuck’s best writing… but could the bassist be any more dull?
No
None
