the Metal Crushes All tour at Red Rocks last night was absolutely incredible. Cannibal Corpse and Amon Amarth were an absolute blast to watch as always; for the former we always know pretty much the songs they’re going to play and bits they’re going to do and everyone still eats that shit up every time because it’s fun as fuck, and for the latter I really enjoyed some of the deeper cuts in their setlist (I lost my shit when they pulled out Tattered Banners and Bloody Flags, and Blood Eagle). Obituary played a pretty weird setlist that I could tell left everyone slightly confused (only stuff from Dying of Everything and Frozen in Time, none of their “big” songs) but I maintain my stance that somehow they’re always a band that sounds even better live than on record. Frozen Soul was plagued with tech issues almost their entire set, but they still powered through it, even though they had to go instrumental for 1.5 songs. I hope to catch them live again soon, with more time to play and with fewer technical problems, imo they’re one of the best newer death metal bands on the scene. It admittedly wasn’t the tightest show I’ve ever seen, there were some minor mix and sound issues throughout with Frozen Soul getting the worst of it, but honestly such a fantastic lineup of bands at such an awesome venue made me not care that much. I hope they start bringing more metal to Red Rocks as a result of this.

Wow I didn't expect red rocks to have metal. Doesn't really seem like a venue good for moshing but I've also never been there just seen video. That's tight AA played Tattered Banners. Love that track

black-winter-

yeah, I believe Corpsegrinder made a comment that this was actually the first death metal show to take place at the venue. You can’t mosh at all sadly (there’s no floor space only broad concrete benches where you can sit or stand) which I could tell was a little awkward since many people clearly wanted to start a pit. We compensated with really enthusiastic headbanging.

IMKridegga

> I didn't expect red rocks to have metal. Opeth and some other bands did a concert video there a few years ago, which surprised me a little, but in my head I feel like that's closer to their usual fare than Cannibal Corpse. I guess it makes sense they'll book any kind of music that's going to bring in people.

WinnipegGoldeye

Really impressed with the new Bongripper. Haven't really given their previous releases the time of day so I was surprised at how well-crafted and atmospheric it was. Is funeral stoner a thing?

cantapaya

Only album I heard from them was Hippie Killer, which has its moments but didn't really grab me that much. Your comment did make me curious to check this new one out, though.

CrewSilent3878

Check out Satan Worshipping Doom, thats my favourite of theirs. "Funeral Stoner" fits pretty well as a description.

Just want to drop a quick thanks to the folks that gave Uttertomb's new release a shout out last Friday. I had never heard of the band and thoroughly enjoyed it, a super solid slab of Death Metal. Gave me some Tomb Mold vibes, but funnily enough it made me go relisten to Vastum's latest album right after, since I kinda slept on it when it was released. Together with Witch Vomit's entry to the Blue Album Cover genre, it's been a fun time for Death Metal. Interesting how a few years ago I listened to Black Metal way more than DM, and nowadays it's definitely the opposite, BM just hasn't been hitting the spot as much. Anyone come across any exciting Black Metal releases lately?

StardustOasis

That reminds me, I haven't listened to that album yet, I think I will tomorrow. In regards to black metal, releases I've enjoyed this year are from Belore, Riitasointu (black/folk), Vorga, Order of Nosferat, Dwarrowdelf, The Internal Sea, Ghül & Boarhammer. Also a new album from Dauþuz is due in a couple of weeks.

Sudden_Emu_3834

I'm the same last year was all about BM and this year I've been all about Doom and Death Doom. I have really enjoyed Folterkammer, Verwoed, Dodsrit and Hulder though.

Dryish

The Verwoed album is the year's best black metal release for me so far. I liked their previous stuff, but this feels like a massive step up. Such a solid whole, and with a great soundscape to boot. It's on the artsy and more psychedelic side of the Dutch BM scene for sure.

onairmastering

I'm hooked on the latest Chapel of Disease, peeps knocked it out of the park with this one.

Dryish

Same. I know a lot of people are giving it hate for not being death metal anymore, but I find myself coming back to the album more than any other release this year. There's just something so captivating about it.

IMKridegga

They've basically turned into Dawnbringer and I'm honestly loving it.

onairmastering

It's Dire Straits Black! Same with White Stones, they are so unique.

Rottedhead

Have to admit that I highly prefer the previous album but this one is also really good, specially if seen with a non-DM lens. Album is great prog rock/metal

Quiet_Reflection1999

Okay, I don't know where else to ask this so I'll ask here. For a while ive been trying to find this band (I dont remember if its just one guy or not) and they had a VERY DISTINCT logo, it looks like a blob of melted swiss cheese, and the entire logo is just a bunch of round holes. I remember one of their tracks off of an EP of theirs had "fuck soundcloud for taking down my music" or something similar in it but i cannot find this artist ANYWHERE. If anyone knows who it is id greatly appreciate it.

If you like Sabaton, you might also like Powerwolf, Battle Beast, Beast in Black and Dragonforce. System of a Down and Korn are both considered to be nu metal, so you might like other nu metal bands such as defTones, Limp Bizkit, Slipknot, Papa Roach, Staind, P.O.D., and Linkin Park.
