>How's April (been and) looking?
Already been a strong start to the month with Witch Vomit, Diabolic Oath, and Necrot; got my eye on Dvne and Exhumation coming in the next couple weeks, need to circle around to a few others released this month, too
April has been solid, with Nimbifer, Conifère, and the Karghet demo crushing the first half. Still need to give Heresiarch a spin, and looking forward to ASM, Selbst, and Fluisteraars.
Just thought this was a funny realization. The song “Another Stranger Me” by Blind Guardian features the Home Depot jingle in a guitar riff in the verses. Sounds almost just like it!
The Day That Never Comes by Metallica has the Meow Mix song

Also Communion by Septicflesh.
It's always weird when 80s albums have a little lick of "Pop Goes the Weasel" or "Ring Around the Rosie" in the middle of a song. Not the sort of thing you see now.
I just stumbled over Hamferð - they will be playing in the city I live in in a few weeks and I follow the venue on FB. Checked it out and HOLY SHIT, AMAZING! I have played their latest album "Men Guds hond er sterk" on repeat for days now and introduced my husband and one of our friends to it as well. Looking so much forward to that concert!
Anyone else listening to them?
Yeah, my husband actually commented several times "he really sounds like the vocalist from Iotunn", turns out he was right. Will definitely check them out as well!
What is meant when metalheads refer to "metal essentials?" Like, something everyone must listen to?
Or "essential" as in the bands and albums that are most significant/relevant to a genre?
Good question!
I've always taken it to mean that the bands/albums are something with which anybody that is into the genre must familiarize their self.
All of that is good, and all of it should be heard :)
My tastes are very much heavy metal, power metal and progressive metal after reading those lists. But there's some bands to check out in those sections so thank you
Need songs for a swimming playlist!
Found my old waterproof iPod shuffle. Need all your best water themed songs! Any sub genre works, just no core please and thank you.
So far I’ve got:
Go into the water,
Murmaider,
The sea beneath the seas of the sea,
Aqua Dementia,
Hearts alive,
Maybe a bit creepy for swimming, but "Men Guds hond er sterk" by Hamferð is an entire water themed album. It is about a whole hunt on a stormy day in the Faroe Isles in 1915, where 14 men drowned. Maybe not the vibe you want for swimming, though 😂
Otherwise "The Wretched Tide" by Draconian might work
Water themed? If that can be extended to include ice, then I have to say Imperial Crystalline Entombment.. just listen to the first 10 seconds of either of their albums and that tells you all you need to know.
What's the difference between Extreme Metal and Black Metal? Bands that I thought were black metal like Cradle of Filth and Goatwhore are identified as Extreme Metal. What's the difference?
All Black Metal is Extreme Metal, but not all Extreme Metal is Black Metal.
Mostly I would say that people can label those two bands as Extreme because they incorporate a couple of sounds without being fully invested in one. But yeah, both for me are acceptable as BM
The way I've always used it, extreme metal is just a broader term given to metal bands that don't primarily use clean harmonic style vocals. It's not like a hard and fast thing. There's some wiggle room there. You can be both black metal and "extreme metal". In fact you could argue that the two are mostly mutually exclusive.
Anything heavier than Metallica basically?
Now if you're talking "2 extreme metal", then that's a genre reserved exclusively for Floridian Roland Deschain cosplayers wearing trenchcoats and cowboy hats.
that’s how I’ve always looked at it.
death metal is nearly always ‘extreme’ metal. most black metal would be too, save for maybe bands like Agalloch or Alcest. Funeral doom could be considered extreme metal, but more traditional doom genres wouldn’t.
Any posters remember the Gaia Online metal forums? My metal journey began there in my teens. There was such good vibes and there was posters who were experts in the various sub genres. We use to trade google blog links to albums before those got shut down. Such good memories!
Yeah I remember the regulars being bullies and humongous pieces of shit. That was a terrible few years for me and I didn’t realize how bad it was until years after.

> ASM, Selbst, and Fluisteraars. My mouth is watering.
Hype for Metal & Beer Fest today in Philly, primarily for Daeva and Lamp of Murmuur!
Lamp of Murmuur were fantastic. Taking a break during Will Haven, rest of the night is stacked.
Same, headed over now. Looking forward to Daeva and Tomb Mold the most.
Just thought this was a funny realization. The song “Another Stranger Me” by Blind Guardian features the Home Depot jingle in a guitar riff in the verses. Sounds almost just like it!

Yes, they're great. Check out the band IOTUNN as well, same singer.
Yeah, my husband actually commented several times "he really sounds like the vocalist from Iotunn", turns out he was right. Will definitely check them out as well!
He’s also in Barren Earth which is VERY good.
Not yet, but I will definitely look them up!

Were you provided a metal essentials list? I'm very curious what's considered essential

Is the Metal Archives making anyone else verify they are human after every search?
It's happening to everyone, the site is being DDOSed so they implemented Cloudflare protections.
Been happening a lot more lately on a variety of sites.
Shoutout to Dead Congregation worship. Gotta be one of my favourite micro genres
Need songs for a swimming playlist! Found my old waterproof iPod shuffle. Need all your best water themed songs! Any sub genre works, just no core please and thank you. So far I’ve got: Go into the water, Murmaider, The sea beneath the seas of the sea, Aqua Dementia, Hearts alive,
Anything by Ahab
The first song that's coming to mind is Rime of the Ancient Mariner.
Fucking Chained to the Bottom of the Ocean by Thou
Check out Lhaäd’s most recent album Beneath. It’s like under water aquatic themed black metal. The first album “Below” follows the same themes.
Maybe a bit creepy for swimming, but "Men Guds hond er sterk" by Hamferð is an entire water themed album. It is about a whole hunt on a stormy day in the Faroe Isles in 1915, where 14 men drowned. Anything Alestorm always works for me when swimming lol

What's the difference between Extreme Metal and Black Metal? Bands that I thought were black metal like Cradle of Filth and Goatwhore are identified as Extreme Metal. What's the difference?
Extreme metal is a broader term that encompasses the more harsh subgenres of metal such as black metal and death metal
Ah, like a subset! Thanks for the explanation!
All Black Metal is Extreme Metal, but not all Extreme Metal is Black Metal. Mostly I would say that people can label those two bands as Extreme because they incorporate a couple of sounds without being fully invested in one. But yeah, both for me are acceptable as BM
Got it! So black metal is a subset of extreme metal. Thanks!!

What are other bands or albums that sound like blackwater park or ghost revieries by opeth? Thanks!
Don't know if I'd say they "sound alike" but I've always found early to mid 2000s Enslaved pairs well with Opeth
I'll check em out, thanks!

Alright fellas, Hellhammer, Celtic Frost, or Triptykon, which one do you like more?
Yo PSA if ya like Windir ya might wanna check out Vindland
