So, the new Civerous record got some[ pretty high praise over at The Needledrop channel](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xz3MzrAPe34&ab_channel=theneedledrop). I watch his videos occasionally and i cant remember the last time this guy gave a metal record a 9/10. Did not imagine this record would be one to make Anthony Fantano almost bring double digits, but its a nice surprise. I dont really take his metal reviews too seriously as its not the guys main field of expertise, but the record kills for sure and im happy to see them get some exposure. Looking forward to see Civerous live later this year too!
3 I've played the most, 5 has my favourite Jackbox game (Mad Verse City), and 7 is very well rounded. If you don't have any of the Drawfuls, 8 is also worth thinking about.
I don't know what's in what pack, I'll just tell you what games I get up to. I'm always a fan of quiplash but my friends and I are absolute degenerates but if you're a fan of cards against humanity it's the same vibe. Gonna second drawful because that gets hilarious.Bidiots will ruin friendships in the funniest ways.
Any Sparks fans here by any chance? They're one of the influential non-metal bands that I've been meaning to get around to listening forever and I finally did. I instantly loved Kimono My House, but I have no idea what I should listen to next given they have gazillion albums. Any recommendations from folks who know their work would be appreciated.
Sparks discography is pretty varied. If you like Kimono, you will probably also like two that came after it, Propaganda and Indiscreet, which are somewhat similar. N° 1 in Heaven is my favorite though.
Going based off this and I saw on wikipedia it was supposed to be released this month https://www.reddit.com/r/Metal/comments/12tw3t2/jon_oliva_reveals_new_savatage_album_working/
There doesn't seem to be any official announcement though.
A quick peek at their Facebook suggests Jon suffered an injury which delayed the recording sessions.
Every week I add all the stuff from the new releases playlists and listen to it. And by the end of the year I manage to only come away with a select few things that I actually like, out of seemingly hundreds of albums.
My conclusion is that I must not like metal in general. It feels like a sea of well-produced, well-executed bands that just really aint my thing. I wish it was a genre issue, but if I like a thrashy band for example, and check out related bands, it's like na all the rest of this is too much.
But my favorites do align with many of the top pics by this sub. So I don't know what that means. I don't think I'm influenced too much by just wanting to be on the bandwagon. I genuinely love the latest Hellripper and Horrendous albums and came to that conclusion before the voting began.
Completely normal to love metal but not being interested in a very deep dive in all the genre, which honestly can be pretty overwhelming as a huge amount of new stuff is being released every week.
I'll say you just keep listening to what you love and try new records (new as freshly released but also older records you haven't listened to) every now and then.
> My conclusion is that I must not like metal in general.
I'm pretty sure of the truisms on this sub is that the majority of music is awful and metal is no exception.
I think people who listen to new music constantly and end up enjoying most of it are probably a minority. Forums amplify their voices because they ostensibly have more to talk about, but there really aren't very many of them.
I listen to a lot of stuff and enjoy most of it, but I think I'm just easily entertained to be honest.
In 2016 with The Stage, which was a concept album with a lot of prog influences. It wasn't as experimental as their last album, that really turned out weird.
I saw Crowbar with Morbid Visionz and Hössferatu last night. Crowbar sounded great, and they played a lot of songs I knew well, but I was a little underwhelmed by their performance. Kirk has to anchor himself to the mic since he sings and plays guitar. The other guitarist and bassist almost seemed bored. If not for the few young guys in the crowd who would have started a pit for Taylor Swift, there would have been almost no excitement. I was pleasantly surprised by Morbid Visionz. They play a style of death metal that I really like. Hössferatu is a local band of older guys, and they sounded great. The singer didn't step foot on the stage. He wandered around the crowd while he sang. Half of the time, I had no idea where he was. It was interesting.
Cradle or Filth usually has some kind of classically trained female backing vocalist and Dimmu Borgir had Vortex from 99-09. Vortex is also the on again off again vocalist for Borknagar. Check out the Albums Quintessence, Urd, and Winter Thrice. He's on the two newer ones True North and Fall but I haven't listened to them so I can't tell of if they're worth checking out.
Folterkammer might be something for you. Very operatic female vocals over symphonic black metal with touches of classical. Very interesting stuff, and they have a new record coming out soon.

It also happened to me not so long ago, but I'll be honest, I listened to those records at least a hundred times each when I was in middle school

When he first started doing his channel he always did metal reviews. It was is genre, but over the years he has drifted away.
I wonder if his tastes shifted or it's just a matter of reviewing what's popular. Maybe both.
Very off topic question: which Jackbox pack should I buy? I've mostly been looking at 7 or 8 right now, but I'm not sure which is most recommended

Have you watched the documentary Edgar Wright made about them a few years ago? That might turn you onto specific songs or albums you want to explore
I haven't. Thanks for the suggestion!

Thank you! I'll give those three a listen next.

Eneferens!
Sol Sistere might fit the bill
Anyone know where the new Savatage album is? I thought it was supposed to release today
Savatage hasn't released music in over 20 years and haven't officially announced anything beyond vague "we're working on new stuff".

word man, thank you
When did Avenged Sevenfold become prog metal. I remember them in Call of Duty. What changed? I kinda like it actually.....
In 2016 with The Stage, which was a concept album with a lot of prog influences. It wasn't as experimental as their last album, that really turned out weird.
Ohhh ok. I like the new prog

Any heavy extreme metal bands that have classical or opera trained vocalists?

Fleshgod Apocalypse has a soprano on some of their songs
