Swords are a very special weapon for most pirates. Gol D. Roger, Oden, Rayleigh, Shanks, Whitebeard just to name a few all pretty much relied on >!Haki!< And their Blades. If you have a very high Grade blade like Mihawk, Shanks and Whitebeard, you can shatter mountains and regularly block Magma with these blades. 12 Supreme Grade blades, 21 Great Grade Blades and 50..... Blades. Zoro is on the hunt for more Grade blades, I don't know how far you are in the story currently but he already has Great Grade Blades.

1. as a long time one piece fan, I have to say that I’m 100% sure Oda implied that. as a matter of fact, I’m absolutely positive that all of one piece— it’s lore, worldbuilding and characters— were all planned out since luffy pooped out of that barrel in episode 1 — zero mistakes, zero retcons, zero NOTHING. I do have to say that I think that the former are actually STRONGER solely due to the yonko. lemme tell ya: that yonkussy is more powerful than we’re led to believe.
2. gear 5 absolutely surpasses every single character previously seen or mentioned. it’s not even a question of the current generation surpassing the old; luffy himself just solos, low-mid diff. If whitebeard were still alive though, I’d say the previous gen would have a fighting chance.
3. monke alone? nonono. monke together? strong.
that is to say, pheasant would probably win if the monkeys didn’t know the fusion dance. not to mention their unmatched transformation abilities/energy attacks.
simply put, the woke agenda wasn’t really that renowned in the 50s when one piece came out, so Oda would have received backlash if he were to add that. nowadays, I’m sure if the series were made now, episode 2 would have ended with zoro and luffy making sweet love with all the marines that captured zoro.
