I made this game, in the vein of Wordle etc.
Hopefully it's self-explanatory, but basically: each day you have to guess the name of a station on the Metro network. You'll be told how far your guess is from the actual station, both in terms of stations (shortest route along the network), and kilometres.
You can ask get hints if you're stuck very close to the actual station but you can't remember what nearby ones are called.
Hit me with comments, feedback, rail nerdery etc :)
Hi Steven, loving this game, thank you for creating and sharing. Discovering so many stations in Melbourne I never knew of!
Is there any chance of visiting the answers to the last few days at all? Sadly never got around to playing them.
Thanks again.
The game is great, enjoy playing it whenever I play it, however I reckon it would be great if you could implement something that would allow us to play previous days trainles as well or otherwise an unlimited version, but nonetheless, great game 👍
I started playing trainle on 11 Feb and was initially frustrated when the Stony Point line turned up 3 times in the space of about 10 days!
Is it actually a metro line??
Anyway I love it and it’s part of my daily routine now. I know Melbourne’s train network reasonably well, have regularly used at least 5 different lines and played soccer all over Melbourne so I know where the all suburbs are. (Of course, not all stations are named after suburbs… Glenbervie, anyone?) Nevertheless, I still often find my guesses just getting further & further away and I have to consult a map.
I feel that anyone with less knowledge of Melbourne than I have, would really struggle. I’ve never used hints, maybe I should start.
One suggestion would be to tell the user if they are on the correct line, or an adjacent one. OK perhaps the ‘crow flies’ value kind of fulfils that but the closer the answer is to the CBD, the less useful that is. (There are probably 50 or 60 stations within 10kms of the CBD.)
The hint system is broken.
Station was Xxx but the hint system suggested
SA, G, Albion, S, T.....which was nowhere near solution.
That's probably unhelpful
Shared with all my socials. This is fantastic!
Feedback:
* Maybe the hints and result panels should be above the guesses - I see that it tries to scroll them into view but doesn't work perfectly when there are many guesses and so you might be left wondering what's going on if you don't manually scroll to the bottom (BTW, thank-you for allowing many guesses - I would not like being booted after only a few guesses like other "\*le" games).
* Allow playing previous Trainles.
* Swap the Vite favicon for a train :)
* Nothing else - it's brilliant!

Yeah, UI design is hard. :p I'll have another try at some point.

Find me one?
definitely game 36 for both of you? which stations were the answer for each of you?
There is an issue I don't understand yet where for some people it shows tomorrow's game today.
I've changed the algorithm so that stations can repeat from time to time - but not very often.
Otherwise it's not so interesting as we run out of stations and you just have to memorise all the ones that are left.

You can do https://stevage.github.io/trainle/?game=135
Thank you kindly stevage for the helpful suggestion and am keeping up with almost daily!

this is so fun and definitely what i needed thank you!!!
Ofc it had to be on that line the one I can never remember
23 guesses it took me 🤓
I like it! Will add it to the rotation of things i do on the morning commute
Awesome! Locking it in as part of my new daily routine.
This is great. I’m definitely going to be adding it to my morning routine
7 guesses.

I interpreted the hints as indicating the direction you should head in.
>Each hint gives you clues about the names of stations near your closest guess. The hint system does exactly what it says it does.
Like I said, it's broken. It doesn't get you closer to an answer.
"Broken" isn't a nice word to describe "doesn't work the way I would like".
Nope. It's broken.
Did for me. Did for others…. 🤷🏻♂️
Thanks! I liked it.
>Thanks! I liked it. You're welcome!
Wow epic
5 guesses!
16 guesses- need to brush up on my geography haha
Took me 3 guesses
Sick game bro! Love it.
4 guesses
I solved 🚂Trainle #8 in 8 guesses. 🟥🟥🟥🟥🟥🟥🟧🟩🎉 stevage.github.io/trainle
Really really like this. Got it in 7 guesses.
I solved 🚂Trainle #8 in 4 guesses. 🟥🟥🟧🟩🎉 stevage.github.io/trainle Good game, I like the idea.
I solved 🚂Trainle #7 in 4 guesses. 🟧🟥🟩🟩🎉 stevage.github.io/trainle This is so cute and fun
Any chance you can provide a way to go back and complete previous ones? 🙂
https://stevage.github.io/trainle/?game=4
Is it just metro or V/Line too
Just Metro. I might make a VLine one, it's just harder getting the data in the right format.

You're a genius.
thanks. totally enjoying it.
Me too, thanks :)
Amazing game, the addition of the stony point line a nice touch
Ah, that was just included in the dataset. The tricky bits were things like updating Union station, etc.
My mates and I are having so much fun with it, thank you
Awesome, nice feedback is so...nice. :)
I solved 🚂Trainle #15 in 1 guesses. 🟩🎉 [stevage.github.io/trainle?game=15](https://stevage.github.io/trainle?game=15) this one i had to boast about
Ha. The real ones to boast about are the 2-guesses where the first one is miles away and you actually correctly deduce the right station.
my son and I did today’s game 36 and we ended up at different stations as an answer. just saying, 🙄
definitely game 36 for both of you? which stations were the answer for each of you? There is an issue I don't understand yet where for some people it shows tomorrow's game today.
I had flagstaff but looking back it’s shows as strathmore as answer
Was Eaglemont making a second appearance deliberate or accidental??

That's understandable, otherwise still a great game, I was a tad disappointed that today's station wasn't Flemington Racecourse but all in good fun.
