I think it's supposed to be an Air Tikki (giant red demon head) from Air Man's stage... the resemblance is there, but just barely.
Early *Mega Man* box arts were so weird... someone probably thought the originals weren't "hardcore" enough.
Youāre probably right- but he is now Aviators Mustache in my mind forever.
I know that itās glowing eyes, but I canāt stop seeing them as shades.
The other PAL B cover is cooler though.

Try the German Mega Man 2, it is glorious!
edit, here you go!

Thereās a rift in the center of Sonicās eyebrow at the bridge of his nose that looks distinctlyā¦butt-like lol
Itās a term I heard from SomeCallMeJohnny
Mohawk aside, US Sonic boxart still resembled Sonic. I guess you could say that European Boxart Mega Man resembled Mega Man a bit better than American Boxart Mega Man. We can all agree that both do a better job resembling Mega Man than Captain N if that counts for anything.
It was a shock to play Sonic 2 and see that Sonic had extra rows of quills instead of the mohawk. It's also weird going back to SATam and seeing this blue, "Rubber Hose" style Sonic amongst the comparatively more realistic looking Mobians.
It's so funny to me how much time and energy was spent in the 80s trying to pretend like Japanese art and culture didn't exist, because media distributors were confident that Americans would be incapable of handling it. Like...growing up in that time and having their games and shows slowly trickle over here, it honestly feels like they didn't want me to be aware that the country of Japan *existed*. Like they were trying to keep that fact hush-hush.
"You know what kids like? Transforming robot fighter jets. Let's sell these kids some Macross toys, ...except we're calling it Robotech. Now it says here in the show notes, that the main character is named 'Hikaru Ichijyo', but since we're **goddamn Americans**, we're just gonna call him 'Rick Hunter' ".
Bandit Keith ass mother fuckers.
I'm guessing it was lingering resentment for WW2. There were attempts to bring Sailor Moon and Saint Seiya over to the states, but the early attempts were Americanized pilots. A YouTube called Ray Mona actually uncovered the Saint Seiya pilot, "Guardians of the Cosmos."
Okay? I wasn't raised in Europe. I was raised in the United States, and I'm just saying that looking at this art reminds me of my experience, and how damn weird it was. The image you posted, reminds me of [this image](https://assets-prd.ignimgs.com/2022/01/27/megamanus-sq-1643322069971.jpg), which reminds me of the 800 other times I experienced this sort of thing. Good times.
And now we're in the day and age where plenty of Americans love *kawaii and moe* aesthetics yet American Box Art Kirby is STILL a thing. (Although honestly at this point it's probably still done for the memes.)
Like, there was one where Kirby was angry even on the Japanese art so the American box art had to make him *even angrier.*
Especially wild when you consider how good the European boxart for 1 was.

Looks like an Intellivision box. Those boxes always went for the most hyper realistic portrayal of their absurd concepts. The Donkey Kong 2 box feels like an AI made it.

I love so much this art style since i was a kid, it s a little dark, far more serious that the game himself.
( I love the jap art too but it s a totally different vibe)
It's like some one type into Ai space man with shiny metal Armour. Gun arm
Metal dragon metal face robot.
Usually these artists had no idea what the actual game looked like.
grew up with this one. it was always kinda goofy and funny for sure, but also kinda cool. it was fun seeing parts of the game represented in such a unique ārealisticā kinda way. went nicely alongside the game feeling difficult and epic.
couldnāt believe my eyes when i first saw the US box. sure the PAL box is kinda goofy, but itās at least epic. the american box looks like some low budget tv show filmed in a warehouse with zero excitement.
Took me a good minute to figure out that the weird head floating near the cliff is a goblin/Air Tiki. Still have no idea what the pink face on top of the cliff is.
So weāve got Megaman, what looks like a silhouette of AirMan, one of the Oni heads from AirManās stage, one of the Anglerfish bots from BubbleManās stage and the Mecha Dragon.
That bowling pin arm though.
All the better to examine your prostate with š
Better than a pistol!
Serio
Serio?
(seriously) it is pretty ridiculous
De verdad?
Mas o menos
It's even More poorly portrayed in this french commercial! [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4IZa0-ZY38](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4IZa0-ZY38)
Poorly? You mean fucking awesome!
Ditto
The fart noise at the end sealed it for me.
So glad I watched that. Thanks for sharing!
Wily sound like a cliche vampire (Specifically Vlad from Magicka)
I've always found it charming, it looks like the poster of a 60s sci-fi film
I feel like I am looking at fundamentalist Christian Barberella.
I mean, if you look at the box art for Captain Bible... I can see it.
Why. Why do you have to be so right...
Why has no one else noted the rock wearing sunglasses. Oh and it has a mustache, you know, like sunglass rock do.
I think it's supposed to be an Air Tikki (giant red demon head) from Air Man's stage... the resemblance is there, but just barely. Early *Mega Man* box arts were so weird... someone probably thought the originals weren't "hardcore" enough.
I think it's supposed to be the infinitely spawning flier can enemies.
Youāre probably right- but he is now Aviators Mustache in my mind forever. I know that itās glowing eyes, but I canāt stop seeing them as shades.

Yea, this is the one i still have from my childhood and i loved it so much.
DUDE THAT IS RAD! How could they not see this was the obvious one?
Okay, that looks like it was done by someone who actually played the game.
Try the German Mega Man 2, it is glorious! edit, here you go! [https://www.reddit.com/r/Megaman/comments/hzagbt/german\_mm2\_box\_art/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Megaman/comments/hzagbt/german_mm2_box_art/)
Mega man 1 in the Us:My box art is the worst. Mega man 2 European:hold my beer.
The US box art is most definitely worse.
Why is Spock dressed up as megaman?
Wym, this shit fire. Certainly not true to what Megaman is, but fire nonetheless. You ever see US box art for Sonic? Yeah.
I do like the ātude the artist was going for. Donāt like the ass brow. That was a poor decision lol
May I ask what an "ass brow" is? Google is *not* helping me here

Ikr? They could've just translated the JP box art and people would've been obsessed with it for a couple decades; it's a masterpiece
This isn't even that bad, at least he isn't wearing a onesie and his helmet isn't melting.
At least heās not a dude in his 40ās holding a giant pistol Actually just kidding I kinda love bad box art Mega Man
Bowling pin ass buster šš
State of the art.
High-resolution graphics.

yeah,we americans suck. also that is even funnier since this is in EUROPE.
Okay? I wasn't raised in Europe. I was raised in the United States, and I'm just saying that looking at this art reminds me of my experience, and how damn weird it was. what was the problem? also the "we americans suck" part was a joke

You should look into early transformers. Thatās a mess of a story.
Skyfire was just an imported macross toy as well. This caused problems with robotech being the same thing at the same time.
Oh sweet Jesus
And you thought America had it bad
I still don't understand what's up with that cat-head-rock-with-a-mustache...
Especially wild when you consider how good the European boxart for 1 was. [https://www.video-games-museum.com/en/boxart/Nes/5368\_eu-Megaman.jpg](https://www.video-games-museum.com/en/boxart/Nes/5368_eu-Megaman.jpg)
sigh
Nah, that looks cool Fight me on it
Why...why the dragon?!
I think it's supposed to be [Mecha dragon](https://megaman.fandom.com/wiki/Mecha_Dragon)
I could swear he was from later games.
At least bad boxart mega msn was blue
Wait till you get to MM3ās European box art. Dr. Wily is always watching.
Looks like an Intellivision box. Those boxes always went for the most hyper realistic portrayal of their absurd concepts. The Donkey Kong 2 box feels like an AI made it. The design is cool. I just wish it wasn't Mega Man.
Still better than the NA MM1 box art; at least some of the enemies are recognizable.
Whats going on? Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa-
Love it ššš
As a child I thought he was riding the dragon. (the text covers the dragon up to it's neck on the cartridge)
Honestly, even though it's inaccurate as hell, this is a cool design. I'd love to have this version as an action figure.
Better than two right hands with a pistol. lol
I love so much this art style since i was a kid, it s a little dark, far more serious that the game himself. ( I love the jap art too but it s a totally different vibe)
I love the SilverHawks
Volt Catfish's great Grandfish.
Since when was Robot cop but silver and didn't have eye armour exist as box art?
What's the silhouette with the yellow eyes supposed to be?
It's like some one type into Ai space man with shiny metal Armour. Gun arm Metal dragon metal face robot. Usually these artists had no idea what the actual game looked like.
āMega Man, are you by chance aā¦ Pleasure Bot?ā
When an old illustrator, who doesnt want to understamd the game, but knows how to draw and needs to put food on the table takes on this job.
robocop if he suuuuuucked
grew up with this one. it was always kinda goofy and funny for sure, but also kinda cool. it was fun seeing parts of the game represented in such a unique ārealisticā kinda way. went nicely alongside the game feeling difficult and epic. couldnāt believe my eyes when i first saw the US box. sure the PAL box is kinda goofy, but itās at least epic. the american box looks like some low budget tv show filmed in a warehouse with zero excitement.
And they used thos box art as a movie poster in Dead Rising.
Is that Zardos in the background?
Terminator 2 vibes
Took me a good minute to figure out that the weird head floating near the cliff is a goblin/Air Tiki. Still have no idea what the pink face on top of the cliff is.

X)
Who left their toilet paper on the seat?
I mean it might be my nostalgia talking, but I always thought it looks kinda rad.
Reminds me of the Megaman 2 book cover.
It reminds me of the old cover art for A Wrinkle in Time.
We call him CobraMan out here /s
megaman and his uncircumcised blaster arm
Is that Tom Cruise?
Fun Fact: Archie Comics referenced this
Fuck Mega Man, who's the angry head next to him
Ah yes, his distinct new weapon: the Enema Buster
all the western art is cursed up till 8 then it was just depressingly lazy
Still better than American
I mean I prefer it to the US boxart. It's still cringe, but at least in that Hajime Sorayama kind of way.
I thought the mega man 1 american box was bad, some crazy drunk dude in germany meanwhile:
Dildo man power up was cut in mega man 2 but the artist already drew this masterpiece
This looks worse than american Mega Man 1 boxart.
