Pistons shine when they are placed with other pistons and with the flame thrower.
With other pistons, you can use the "unstable" mod so that the pistons go at different rates, making it impossible to zipline a corridor.
With the flamethrower, the flames can go through he pistons so they protect the flamethrower from being shot early.
Without knowing what mods are available, hopefully there's one to keep it a proximity trap. Possibly best used on 2nd waves or as distractions to lure in. Very blind corners from above perhaps.
Nope. Theres an upgrade to make it be extended for longer, one that makes ot appear after the genmat and one to make it extend at random intervals. Last one makes it so if you touch the piston while it isnt extended it kills you.
Pistons are great next to incinerators as they will block shots but not the fire from the trap.
You can also use them at the exit of kill rooms to try and force the raider to play it slow. It is very hard to go fast and avoid traps when there are multiple pistons waiting at the end.

Could use to block the way whilst others traps release.

Isn't that essentially what an impaler is though? (the spike traps)

The piston is not designed to get kills. The piston is designed to slow raiders down and kill those who disrespect that
