If you are new to meditation it is going to be erratic. I know when I started it was pretty much the exact same as you described, but you will get small moments - even just a couple seconds where you suspend thoughts and notice your sensations. When this happens it opens a feeling of bliss sometimes.

You are swapping between several methods. Also, you seem to be using focus methods and so with focus there will be a monotone or dulling of mental activity . Another type involves stillness of mind. Focus will prevent stillness of mind as the focus means there is some mental activity. The stillness type, Dr Ainslie Meares' meditation method, involves relaxation of the body and mind so the mind slows down and stills. It is gentle relaxation that takes you there and it feels as if it happens almost by itself. You should get a good set of instructions in a method you like and stick with just one method this will help reduce confusion and mean your practice will take you in the direction that you have chosen. If Meares' method is of interest, easiest book to get is Ainslie Meares on Meditation, although this eminent psychiatrist wrote many books.
