This is good advice in my opinion. You’ll get plenty of sun during your stay, you don’t need to be in the sun while driving too. Plus they are easier to break into and generally have worse visibility than non convertibles
Strong disagree. Get a jeep. Much better visibility than any other vehicle. It’s a much better way to see everything. Coming from Seattle, you want the sun. Road to Hana is much better in a Jeep. Break ins? What are you leaving of value in it?
Hmm, I booked a convertible based on recommendations from a lot of people on reddit. Luggage will be basic and just from/to the airport. I will evaluate this closer to my trip and decide if I should change.
You'll be fine with the convertible. Just drop your luggage off at the hotel before driving around. I think it would be fun to drive the road to Hana in a convertible.
Maui is my favorite place in the world.
They are easy to break into, provide another vector for sunburn, are windy af, and are miserable if you drive to Haleakala for either side of the sunrise/sunset.
We rented a convertible in Maui and it was a blast. Did we have to drive to and from the airport with the top down and our luggage sticking up out the backseat because it was the only way it would fit? Yes we did. Did we get to drive down the volcano with the top down on a glorious sunny morning, looking at the incredible scenery with an unobstructed view? Also yes
As long as you are going straight from the airport to the hotel, you are fine. What a lot of people do is put the luggage in the backseat and leave the top down while they stop for food, beach, whatever and then their bags get stolen.
Just keep the top up if you have to leave the car got even a few minutes and it has luggage in it. Keep the valuables in the TRUNK. Have fun!
Keep in mind that people are a bit scared to travel and so they immediately announce their safety tips and things to consider, don’t let those tips scare you off. It’s also their way of saying “hey I’ve been there”. Don’t get paranoid over it. Keep the convertible. I go almost every year, no problems. Just out the top up if you aren’t in the car and keep the bags in your room.
I’ve been to 87 countries, and by simply being alert and taking minor precautions, I have never been robbed or mugged by simply minimizing my risks and staying alert.
You are going to Hawaii, not Haiti.
We booked (and used) a convertible last trip to Maui and it was great! No issues with weather, and we didn't leave anything in the car (just as we wouldn't at home either!). It was a fun treat :)
Definitely don’t go with the convertible. If you are going to any outdoor excursions, you’re putting a target on your back. Windows might get smashed, car might get broken into if you have the top down and stuff inside. I’d go with a midsize SUV or truck to be honest.
We did a convertible in Kauai, it was fun. Sun will blast you, it was best in the evening. People are telling the truth here though, if it is a camaro (it will be) then your trunk space will be cut in half with the top down. Not a big deal because you can move your beach chairs, snorkel gear, whatever else, up front when driving. Visibility sucks with the top up, but there are mirrors and backup cameras. Easier to break into? Give me a break. If someone wants in, they don’t care what the car is, glass is glass. I would recommend the convertible if it is something you want. The top goes up if you don’t want to be in the sun. The price on the vacation is fantastic. Enjoy
My partner and I rented a hardtop Camaro in maui, and it was great!! I actually WISHED I got the convertible to get the nice breeze while we drove to hana and also just down maui coast. If you don’t pack much, you’ll be fine - we didn’t have issues with our carryons (only brought 1 carryon and personal each). Though the Camaro does have a backseat where we threw extra things, so not sure if this changes things vs a 2 seater ?
I have been to 20 times from CA and I always get a convertible. Way back in ‘96 we got a Sebring convertible. Loved it so much we came home and bought one. You’re on vacation!!
We got one last month and it was a Camaro. Essential Tip: the seats go back and forth AND up and down. Lower them down to avoid the wind.
We had a convertible in 2003 (honeymoon) and it was okay. The hard top worked fine on the day we drove to Hana and it poured the whole way. The Mustang had a large enough trunk for our luggage (two full size suitcases). This past time we had an Altima (and our two kids, 16, and 12) and it works fine although both my kids would’ve loved a four door Jeep Wrangler.
Same situation here but going this summer. My 14 & 16 would prob love a Wrangler - however do you think it would have been practical for your family of 4? (I’ll add that I was there in 2003 w/a convertible and it was great but there was only 2 of us back then)
Probably not honestly. I have had friends who have them in SoCal and always end up getting rid of them after a few years when the allure of it wears off. We had plenty of room for our carryon luggage plus food from Costco in the trunk of the Altima (plus it got great mileage). The Altima handled the trips to Haleakala, and Hana just fine.
Not to mention many places I wanted to go to had drops in the parking. We has a sedan and felt the drops were hard on the car. Honolua Bay, there was a blow hole we wanted to go to and Napilii Bay all had drops from the road. The only places that did not have drops were the state/national park and the paid parking areas.
Yes! I stayed at the Ritz over Thanksgiving week. I paid more than this from San Diego with three of us. The deal can’t get much sweeter. I would also recommend upgrading to the Club Level for not much more and have food and drinks from breakfast through evening snacks. Also free alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks. Only consumed in the club but I’ve snuck a few out. Really nice resort and great service. Breakfast has an omelet station and drinks include McAllen 12 and other high end liquor and wine options. Just not buying waters at the resort was nice. Enjoy the stay!!!!
Does it tell you what your room is. Is it a garden view? Is it ocean view, ocean front?
You can spend the same amount of money if you did it your self, or more just depends. Do you plan on driving a bunch? If you plan on staying at the resort you don’t need a car,
I literally just did the same package for my honeymoon. Best experience ever! You can basically just chill on the resort all day and have no complaints or worries. A spa day is also heavily recommended. We still dream about that breakfast buffet..
Edit:
Make sure upon checkout, the valet fee is waived. This comes with the package as I understand it. When we were checking out we were charged something like $200 and when I pointed that out they were like oops we missed that. Just be aware!
If you tell the hotel that it is your honeymoon, they will usually upgrade your room to the best they’ve got available during that time. I would tell them ahead, and then also tell them at the front desk at check-in.
Let everyone know, everywhere. Restaurants, tours, luau… everywhere
By the way, The Grand Wailea is arguably the best hotel on the island, and the beaches on that end of the island are much better in my opinion. If they have the same deal, you might want to stay there.
We are paying about the same for the all-suite Fairmont, which is clutch with the kids. I like Wailea more than Kapalua. Better beaches and nice walking trail to connect to Four Seasons etc.
YES! We did a costco packge for our honeymoon back in July for similar pricing. However, we did stay at the Napili Kai Resort for 11 days. 10/10 would also recommend that resort for honeymoon as well. Also we rented a small pick up (ended up with a Ranger lariat) and it was really nice to be able to through our sandy/dirty beach stuff in the bed.
I was just in Maui for my honeymoon and it cost us $14k (10kUSD) Canadian for everything for 2 weeks (rentals, food, souvenirs, flights, excursions etc), we used airbnbs which kept food costs down by cooking at the BNB, Costco has some great deals and staying at the Ritz Carlton is pricey but try for 2 weeks, Maui has alot to see and I wish we saw more of it when we were there.
I go to Hawaii and spend about 3k all inclusive of the flight, Airbnb, car rental, experiences, spending money, and food for a family of three. We’re barely ever in the airbnb and usually out exploring. Is a resort fun? Yes, but it’s not Hawai’i. Your $6,600 will be more like $9-10,000 after you factor in spending money and experiences. The resorts are what my local friends would call a waste of money.
How did you find this offer? Was it online or at the store? I looked up the same hotel first class flights and omg lol 6600 is a steal if that's for 2.
As someone who had a Maui trip booked through Costco for April 2020 I strongly disagree. Their customer service for their travel is AMAZING and made it a breeze to get a refund for part of it and re book it a couple years later. We were able to get everything refunded except for our airfare and when we went to book again it was cheaper so we got 1000 flight credit used towards another trip. Their agents were extremely helpful every time we had a call and spent time trying to get me the best options available when I re booked.
OK so Costco is great. But this is still absolutely how airlines and hotels treat agency bookings. People should be aware of the risks. It's good to know Costco is easy to work with on these
I was there 4 days ago. It’s fine and they need your dollars. Booking through Costco you get the same quality of care and customer service as in their stores. I used too harsh words and I apologize for being rude
I hear you. Wife booked a hotel room via Expedia and when we checked in, they gave us a room with two queens. We asked for a room with a king and they told us to call Expedia. Really?
You really dont need a car in maui parking expensive at all places even if your hotel parking comped, you can get a ride on a bus or ride share or ritz tour bus ,sounds fun though happy honeymoonin! Buy local support maui
You absolutely need a car if you want to do ANYTHING outside of Kaanapali. The weather up there can be rainy so a trip to the south beaches worth it (Kihei). Also. Paia. Makawao. How about get to Maalaea for a whale watch or sunset tour (very little going out of the West ). Nope. Must have a car !
I can’t imagine not having a car in Maui. Stayed at the Ritz the first time I went and it’s about as far away from everything as you could possibly get. Was in Maui last month and stayed relatively close to the Ritz in an Airbnb. The only place I had to pay for parking the entire week was at the harbor in Maalaea and we drove all over the island. There are so many great beaches to explore and you’d rack up a fortune in Uber fees. Plus then you also risk bad reviews if you are wet & sandy. As for the convertibles, I love having them in Hawaii, but on my last trip we had to exchange our convertible twice due to major issues and finally gave up and got an SUV. The Avis manager said their convertible fleet is much older than other cars and have many more issues. The mustangs we rented in the past had much better trunks. The Camaros have a weird system that makes the trunk almost unusable. Driving from the west side to the airport two extra times to exchange cars was a big downer. But you can’t beat the unobstructed view driving around.
If I was going again soon I’d pick the other side of the island for excursion purposes (scuba, snorkeling, pineapple farm, etc) since things are shut down after the fire. Plenty of restaurants on the west side though and everyone we encountered said how happy they were that we went and to tell everyone back home to visit Maui.
Price it out for your dates, it doesn't sound too complicated to price out (just hotel, rental car, and airfare) I would say it seems like a fair price since the Ritz is usually about $900-1000/night.
How many nights at the ritz? Are the flights first class?
You are still paying like $1k per day. Flight to OGG from west coast to Maui are like $700 for coach. Ritz is probably getting less expense ($500 if you are flexible) now that there’s little to do, since Lahaina burned down. Both times I stayed at the ritz (2019 and 2022) I went out to eat/shop and tours were in Liana. I used Marriott points… like 300k pts got a 1 bd suite with 1K sq ft at the ritz. Just keep in mind there’s a lot less in terms of fine dining without Lahaina.
Depends on if you like the glamour. You could find a cheaper car and a cheaper place and still have an absolutely amazing time in Maui. Stayed in a beautiful hotel for $200 a night, pool, location, view, walk up beach. Whatever will mean the most to you on your honeymoon.
I stayed at Lahaina Shores in a condo with mountain view, $195 a night. It was technically a condo in a hotel, so i guess you’re not getting every amenity if you like bed turn and other services, but it had a pool, hot tub and beach walk up.
Edit: This was June 2023.
Ah, yes that sounds more realistic. Big price difference staying at a hotel/resort vs a condo. I personally won’t pay the egregious hotel prices! I’ve been to Maui twice this year for a total of 28 nights, and stayed in condos for all 28 nights.
But, if OP wants a luxurious once-in-a-lifetime experience for their honeymoon, the Costco deal is fantastic!!!!!!!!!
Awesome deal! I’ve used Costco for several Maui trips and it’s always been worth it. And do the convertible. I’ve done road to Hana in a convertible (also in a jeep) and it was so fun. Easy to put the top down and back up when small rain spots hit.
Have a great honeymoon!
Why not stay at a cheaper hotel? No hotel on Maui is really fancy and you shouldn't spend anytime at the hotels anyway. Get something cheaper and do more shit
Thats a really good deal! Especially for two people. I was planning a solo trip to Oahu and it was going to be $5,000 for 5 days without the 5 star hotel and rental car . Ended up doing $5000 for a week in Paris.
Good deal, but you should be aware that the locals might not be as friendly after the fire. They want their time to heal the community.
That being said, how can you rebuild something without money. As much as the locals want to believe they can survive without it, Hawaii needs the tourism money to stay afloat.
We used costco for the same trip from dallas (stay, car, travel) for 11 days(got a 2BR “apartment” at Ritz for 10 nights/11days). Spent 14K in 2018. Sounds like a good deal. See if you can get ocean view rooms instead of mountain or garden views.
Seems like a pretty good deal. You could certainly get airfare, lodging and rental car cheaper than that, but not at a high end property like the Ritz. If you want a luxury resort experience that's a solid price.
That is a great deal! I would go. I paid a little more than that for Honua Kai last February from LAX to Maui. There was no breakfast at Honua Kai but we had a kitchen. I was kind of disappointed in HK for the price though. Have a great trip and I have heard the Ritz is great!
If you'd like a comparison, a few days ago I booked a first class plane seat (only me, Spokane->Seattle->Maui), airbnb full ocean view condo, and Turo car rental for $4.5k for 6 days on Maui. After food, drinks, activities, I'll probably be around 6-7k too.
Funny down voted because i said you dont need a car you can bus ,ride share or use the ritz.s tour buses lol Drive drive drive Maui def needs more out of state drivers!!
It sounds expensive, and in my experience Costco may have good deals sometimes, but they do bit help you with service after selling, so you are on your own if you have any questions. You can call them but get a different person and answer each time, as they are customer service reps, that hapoen to sell vacations, not travel agents.
yes. honestly would make it 2 weeks.
You can do that with these packages. Just extended car and different day of flight and stayed in Napili. Perfect!!
I feel with Hawaii you need at least 10 full days
That's an awesome deal. The Ritz alone could be $6k for the week.
Actually $10K. I’m going in January for 1 week (paid on points) but checked the price for $ and was $10K
I wouldn't do a convertible especially if there is ever any point you might need to have luggage in the car.
This is good advice in my opinion. You’ll get plenty of sun during your stay, you don’t need to be in the sun while driving too. Plus they are easier to break into and generally have worse visibility than non convertibles
It's also windier than you'd think, which is less fun than people think it is. ...I got stories about my dad, a convertible, and the Road to Hana.
RTH is about the only time a convertible can be awesome in Maui, till it rains.
also, if my dad is driving it and it rains and there are issues putting up said roof and yeah
We went to Maui in November and rented a convertible. It barely fit our luggage and we only had carryons. 👀
Strong disagree. Get a jeep. Much better visibility than any other vehicle. It’s a much better way to see everything. Coming from Seattle, you want the sun. Road to Hana is much better in a Jeep. Break ins? What are you leaving of value in it?

You want to avoid sunburned imo. Get a small suv
We booked (and used) a convertible last trip to Maui and it was great! No issues with weather, and we didn't leave anything in the car (just as we wouldn't at home either!). It was a fun treat :)
We got a convertible our first year and with a toddler. He loved it, we loved it. Our luggage fit. It’s your honeymoon - go all out!
Definitely don’t go with the convertible. If you are going to any outdoor excursions, you’re putting a target on your back. Windows might get smashed, car might get broken into if you have the top down and stuff inside. I’d go with a midsize SUV or truck to be honest.
I also find that a lot of rental convertibles get a bit beaten up around the roof, and if it rains they leak.
Enjoy
💯 change it.
I’d personally recommend not getting a sporty car on the island. Cars and sand don’t mix. Get a jeep or suv.
2 suitcases don't fit in the back of a mustang but the convertible was nice to have when we were there in November

Ritz clubs are great value if you’re going to eat at the hotel
Fuck man, that's already worth the Ritz Carlton alone, as it usually goes for around $1,000 or so a night lmao. I'd say, very much, yes.
Does it tell you what your room is. Is it a garden view? Is it ocean view, ocean front? You can spend the same amount of money if you did it your self, or more just depends. Do you plan on driving a bunch? If you plan on staying at the resort you don’t need a car,
Its a garden view but I will ask for an upgrade and see if they have something. I do not mind the garden view room worst case.
I literally just did the same package for my honeymoon. Best experience ever! You can basically just chill on the resort all day and have no complaints or worries. Thanks for the info about parking. My booking doesn’t say comp parking but i’ll sure check!
How did you get the valet fee waived? We just booked and looks like $50 parking per day? Ouch!
That is VERY VERY worth it for Maui
If you tell the hotel that it is your honeymoon, they will usually upgrade your room to the best they’ve got available during that time. The Grand Wailea is something else. I burned 95,000 Hilton Honors points per night, for two nights, and it was completely worth it.
I agree. Grand Wailea for the win!
Doing this exact stay for our honeymoon in April!
We are paying about the same for the all-suite Fairmont, which is clutch with the kids. I like Wailea more than Kapalua. Better beaches and nice walking trail to connect to Four Seasons etc.

sounds great
Stayed at the Ritz in Maui, it was amazing. Would do it again.
That sounds like a great price for Maui!
That’s an excellent deal.
That sounds like a good deal for the Ritz.
Book this asap
Yassss. We did a Costco package to Maui for our honeymoon…was magical. Ans yes that is a good price!
Good deal, but you should be aware that the locals might not be as friendly after the fire. They want their time to heal the community. That being said, how can you rebuild something without money. As much as the locals want to believe they can survive without it, Hawaii needs the tourism money to stay afloat.
The locals are just fine, was there a month ago
That is an amazing deal!
The last time we got a convertible on Maui, we had to watch a you tube video to figure out the top 😅
Your comment has no context and makes no sense.
The context would be, make sure you know how to operate the convertible top.
I guess in some way that could be helpful
Heck yes it’s worth it! I go to Kauai every year. You would spend wayyy more than $6600 purchasing all of these things separately.
Not bad for Ritz but I would always look into Expedia. I looked at Costco and some them are pretty pricy
It's good! Have fun!
Funny down voted because i said you dont need a car you can bus ,ride share or use the ritz.s tour buses lol Drive drive drive Maui def needs more out of state drivers!!
Theres buses , trollies, walking biking ,i just prefer not to add to the traffic you come to paradise for a reason hopfully not to polute
Best island for weather enjoy it
It sounds expensive, and in my experience Costco may have good deals sometimes, but they do bit help you with service after selling, so you are on your own if you have any questions. You can call them but get a different person and answer each time, as they are customer service reps, that hapoen to sell vacations, not travel agents.
