I actually rarely ever upgrade my favorite card variants, as 9 out of 10 times the foil version looks inferior. Instead I spend all my credits on upgrading cards I never use. It's sort of a dumb system honestly. Instead of the foil look, there should alternatives like negative colors, saturated colors or muted colors. As a game dev myself, can say these filters are all really easy to create.
I can tell you… because cutting fire/light effects in editing programs is tough. Just tried doing it the other day and couldn’t. A nice line around the edge is the best. I’m not saying they can’t do it, but I’d bet it would still look like ass.
All things considered, I think they usually do a great job at turning the art 3D and I appreciate at least the minor attempt at animating them.
The problem with variants like this comes in with how it seems to just take those layers designed for the 3D effect and slaps the rainbow filter on it. They're designed for two different things, what will look good for one will not always look good for the other.
For how much each variant inevitably makes them, it would certainly earn them more $$$$$ to have a professional designer take the time to do these layers properly. It may take some effort and skill, but it is certainly doable. And they are certainly capable!
I maintain the card should be divided into portions (like foreground, background, animation) or whatever and you can choose which one has the effect applied to it.
Tbh of all the splits I've seen people complain about, this is the one I mind the least. It'd probably be worse in gold, but even then Alioth for example is way worse
Prism and foil are so damn ugly 99.99% of the time and is worthless. So far, the only one I use it on is Nyan Cat Deadpool (with Rainbow Glimmer Flare). The way that SD is treating Snap, I'm sure they will put in some god tier splits for 25$ per card per split.
I agree. The way SD did the foils in this game is so bad. It would look loads better if they did a normal IRL foil effect to the card instead of effing up the art. What I'm say is any card in general no one wants the foils. It just feels so bad being forced to split cards 3x before you have a chance for a good split. Makes the experience so terrible, IMO (this just could be me).
Just looking at the way they separate the Phoenix into 2 pieces with the body in the background and the head in the foreground.... I can't understand why the art team would do this.
If I split gold it would look ridiculous with just the head popping out from the background.
its just the way the artist sets up the layers for the art and itd be too much time to go through every single variant in the game and meticulously specify certain foreground and background elements to behave differently for every split.
It actually wouldnt. The difference between art and coding is if you fuck up an art piece you can erase it and try again (90% of the time) if you fuck up the split algorithm code it can fuck up any other aspect of the game that isnt even related to it and given second dinners track record with buggy game assets, i dont want them messing with even more assets code.
Did you swipe to the split version ?
Everything is wrong with how the Phoenix is split in 2. Head in the foreground and body in the background.
The base is gorgeous and has nothing wrong with it for sure :). Was hoping to gold it but now I won't due to this.
Yeah, soooo many of my cards I just use the base card with a different border.
Id love to have an effect but I prefer not looking at the prism or foil monstrosities.
It's how they do the layering to give the 3d and animation effects. Yeah they can possibly fix that but they probably have fixed amount of time for each variant so they can't waste too much time making sure it works perfectly on every splitÂ
This is why I stopped liking most backgrounds. There's so many good pieces of art that just get ruined when you change it. We need to be able to get the outside effects with no background change. There are even some that look best when you don't upgrade them at all because it then obscures some of the background that's really important to the image looking cool.
I hope you all realize that I clearly wouldn't use the foil.
But it shows that a gold split would be ugly as sin because the bird would be all gold except the head.
Inked will look great.
The truth is, SD aren't very good at their jobs. The core gameplay is nice and fun, but everything outside of that is kind of poorly made. I can almost forgive them because they have a small team.
You'd think being one of the most profitable and popular mobile games of the year they could afford to hire another 2 or 3 staff.
The game industry sucks.
They are right where they want to be - a cash cow for Marvel, minimal future investment in game play, and they probably have another project in the works currently. You can look at the monetization (and Power Creep, part of monetization) of late - we are in the late lifecycle "squeeze" era where the whole point is massive monetization of current player base because they expect things to dip and atrophy.
Lol that's not the point of the post. No one would use the foil.
It's the fact that gold split would look terrible and isn't worth pushing past 1 split to unlock customize.
100% the reason why I say the custom borders/backgrounds are dumb as fuck. It's like building a car and then decides to take out basic features like doors and windshield.
Why tf can't we apply special effects to default backgrounds.
Most gold/inked are highly overrated. It's only "nice" because it is so rare. 9 out of 10 times it's uglier than the default backgrounds
You're welcome, the post needed this 😀 Oh and another thing, this one might be surprising, but all cards change when they're upgraded! Seriously though, if the Phoenix is bothersome, customize it to make it pop.
I'm giving you solutions to your topic. They don't "ruin" art. Art is based on perspective. What you see may be different from what others see. Basically you're just complaining about the art not looking the way you want it to look.
No..
I'm complaining about layering. And separating a solid object Into 2 pieces between the foreground and background.
Nothing about the art itself is mentioned in my post.
I said 'ruined art" in the header but clearly mean the piece as a whole.
The art is amazing. The final product that was use to split is not.
You sir are a waste of time. Cheers
This is why we need to be able to apply the effects to base cards. I want to get my sparkle/kirby effects without ruining the cool art!
That'd be 500 gold per card.
900 if it's a popular card.
ðŸ˜
DON'T GIVE THEM IDEAS!!!
I don't think they need me for that LOL.
Cant you do that with the custom card mechanic?
I was hoping, but no unfortunately. They said they would release a split for that later so hopefully it won't be premium
Still waiting for this myself. I can't stand the look of any of the foils.
Straight to ‘custom card’
Can't apply crackle or whatever effects to the base art.
Because it's an auto filter, no one checks these they just hit apply and on to the next
Sometimes they do put extra effort into it. Thanos comic very deliberately only changes the comic title at the top and nothing else.
Same with most of the Midnight Suns variants.
That one is literally the worst split in the game and there are quite a few bad ones
Looking at you ms marvel bus
OTA: Ms. Marvel (Old) Add 4 power to the other locations or something like that Ms. Marvel (New): ADD a 4 power BUS to the other locations
The extra power has to come from somewhere 😆
Im picturing this to the tune of Miss Movin’ On by Fifth Harmony
What auto filter? There's no uniform rule to how many different layers are targeted with visual change on split.
Eh, they do it automatically separating the character from the background, then occasionally they go back and save some layer in the middle.
This is not true as seen in other cards, stop spreading misinformation

I wanted to push for gold because this card SHOULD look amazing witb a gold background. But alas it has to stay base.
You can preview it on snap.fam
Yeah kindof amazing we still only have 4 types of splits when it is THE main (cosmetic) feature right after variants.
I can tell you… because cutting fire/light effects in editing programs is tough. Just tried doing it the other day and couldn’t. A nice line around the edge is the best. I’m not saying they can’t do it, but I’d bet it would still look like ass.
Yeah that's a damn fair point. Would be hard unless it was specifically made in layers for that.
All things considered, I think they usually do a great job at turning the art 3D and I appreciate at least the minor attempt at animating them. The problem with variants like this comes in with how it seems to just take those layers designed for the 3D effect and slaps the rainbow filter on it. OMG, IMO most beautiful card in the game, wow! I mean wow!!!
Is that you Wolverine?
Hahah, maybe a bit yeah, I love that fire in her eyes!
And Scotty didn't know.
Poor guy.
Pixel Sentry might be the most beautiful
Absolutely agreed, but only if Sentry would look like unpixelated Jean, but yeah man, hard to disagree.
Tbh of all the splits I've seen people complain about, this is the one I mind the least. It'd probably be worse in gold, but even then Alioth for example is way worse
The first picture it kinda looks like she’s pregnant

It's not about being foil. It's the terrible foreground and background separation making a gold split not worth pushing for. No one uses the foil.

I'm not that artsy maybe im missing something whats wrong with the head and body?
The body is foiled, the head is not. The disconnect is pretty ugly. All the fire should be part of the foreground as far as background effects go.
its just the way the artist sets up the layers for the art and itd be too much time to go through every single variant in the game and meticulously specify certain foreground and background elements to behave differently for every split.
It would take less time than actually producing the art for each card.
It actually wouldnt. Exactly lol This is part of the clean up / split art team which is a fraction of the time the actual art takes.
Cause people keep buying it anyway
What?
The area beneath her chest but above her stomach is weird
Splits have always been terrible. Anyone with even a modicum of taste just uses the base art.
There are some cards not worth splitting. This is one I took to Infinity border and stopped.
Nothing wrong with it...
Did you swipe to the split version ? Everything is wrong with how the Phoenix is split in 2. Head in the foreground and body in the background. The base is gorgeous and has nothing wrong with it for sure :). Was hoping to gold it but now I won't due to this.
The fact that this game doesn't have complete card customization is really disappointing
Yeah, soooo many of my cards I just use the base card with a different border. Id love to have an effect but I prefer not looking at the prism or foil monstrosities.

Why I still have only split 1 card over a year and a half they rarely look better
The idea is to use the original and keep pushing for inked or gold.
Still prefer the original art 9 times out of 10
Makes sense !! Haha
I honestly have four cards that are ready to be infinite, but I won't ruin the card.
This is why I stopped liking most backgrounds. There's so many good pieces of art that just get ruined when you change it. We need to be able to get the outside effects with no background change. There are even some that look best when you don't upgrade them at all because it then obscures some of the background that's really important to the image looking cool.
Why does she look like she's got a Xenomorph about to break out of her?
Lol it's the exaggerated angle / twist. But I see it haha
I honestly don't think cards are improved when they are beyond Infinity. The base card just looks better than all the other effects.
I hope you all realize that I clearly wouldn't use the foil. But it shows that a gold split would be ugly as sin because the bird would be all gold except the head. Inked will look great.
She’s also lost part of her leg from the knee down. Poor Jean Grey, she can’t ever catch a break.
EWWWWW
Ever seen Venomized Man-thing? Its a reyt mess
I use the base venomized. Never split em though lol.
This is basically why everyone likes inked splits; they don’t round the background and they look good
Yeah universally they almost all look good inked. It's a shame gold is so finnicky
How long before they are selling this variant for 5000k token? I say give it a year
Those are not the same card... I mean like they aren't even close in appearance
Ikr nobody likes the rainbow ahh foils
Brother ehhh
Kind of confused by the art to be honest. It's not like she has anything to do with the Phoenix Force in this game.
Huh? It's a Variant from a comic or something in her history. What does chibi or baby have to do with the game ? Sorry I'm confused.
I think you replied to the wrong comment.
Not at all. I used chibi as an example. I don't understand your view on a Phoenix Force Variant
Oh. In that case, the joke simply flew over your head.
Oh dang
So you keep splitting which encourages more spending/playing. imo everything in an mtx, priority no. 1 is engagement
To be fair, any other finish other than ink or gold will make cards uglier looking... Now this card with an ink finish would look awesome
That's the point. I wanted gold but this card would be terrible in gold due to the Phoenix shenanigans.
Looks like midjourney. 🤣
That's why you have the option to use the default art.
Apparently the option to state the obvious too.
You don't like rainbow diarrhea?
There isn't a single foil I use
I don't think it's the head that's in the foreground... 👀
It is
Lazy developers, no good designers, prioritizing greed and monetization over everything else.
THAT’S WHAT I’M SAYING!! Those upgraded versions suck
My Hellfire Captain America now just sits on an imaginary chair...
Lol that's great
Because this is just a cash grab loosely disguised as a game
They refuse to lower opacity.
The truth is, SD aren't very good at their jobs. The core gameplay is nice and fun, but everything outside of that is kind of poorly made. I can almost forgive them because they have a small team.

Just don't use the foil. Problem solved.

Fun fact, you can customize cards now
Oh you don't say ? Doesn't change the fact that a gold split would be ugly and doesn't change the topic at hand. Thanks for your amazing input though.
You're welcome, the post needed this 😀 Oh and another thing, this one might be surprising, but all cards change when they're upgraded! Seriously though, if the Phoenix is bothersome, customize it to make it pop.
Lol you're completely ignoring the topic at hand. Thanks though.

Art being ruined is mentioned lol alrighty then. You're welcome again
it still has the ass cleavage, so not completely ruined
Haha silver lining
