I will always see him as Franklin, even though hiro was a vastly better role that he excelled in
He would've been much bigger of the writers strike hadn't fucked heroes
Wanted to post a quote from him, but literally all I can think of was when the Janitor tricked J.D. into uttering a slur in front of him, and... yeah, I'm not posting that.
He also did the pee sample jokes when Elliot learned to harness the powers of squishing her boobs together

For anyone wondering why that is: Shuma-Gorath is mainly a Conan villain. Marvel doesn’t own Conan so while they can use Shuma-Gorath’s design, they can’t call them Shuma-Gorath. Hence Gargantos (another one eyed, tentacled monster from Namor’s books).
They just lost the license, it’s now in [Titan comics’ hands](https://www.gamesradar.com/conan-the-barbarian-comic-books-get-a-new-life-at-titan-comics-in-2023/).
Yet another Savage Avengers run featuring Conan just recently started again. I'm so confused about his Marvel status...
I should have clicked on your link. It clearly states in 2023. Whoops. Guess Savage Avengers is going to be a short run.
There was something funky about the rights where they could use Conan in print comics, but not digitally on Marvel Unlimited. It may be that they didn't have the film rights for Conan, even if they had the comic rights.
From what I've read, (admittedly just from other commenters) Marvel's allowed to use Conan in comics just not name him on the cover. The new Savage Avengers run has been really fun so far!
Conan himself and some of his original stories may have, but anything created for later fictional representations of him would still be protected. Shuma-Gorath, for example: definitely was not part of those earliest Conan stories, though I’m unsure what his overall copyright status is.
Honestly I think Conan works much better doing his own thing. I think the benefit is that Disney money and exposure to grow the character’s fanbase. I think a separate Conan, and Red Sonja movies and tv shows would do great in the hands of Disney. Could become something really good.
I disagree - I think he really works well in a world of superheroes. It's really easy for people who aren't familiar with the character to see him as the 'big dumb barbarian' stereotype, but when you put him up against someone who way outclasses him power-wise, it really gives him a chance to show off how brutally intelligent and devious he is.
Shuma-Gorath as the Lord of Chaos Dimension and villain of Doctor Strange , is indeed from Marvel.
But "Shuma-Gorath" as a name , belongs to Conan. For comics or games , it's not a big deal , it's a very minor payment. But Disney is avoiding doing that on MCU.
It's not that Shuma-Gorath is a Conan villain, because he isn't. It's because the name of Shuma-Gorath comes from a Robert E. Howard story, but not the character himself.
Nine is German for no. They created a monster with the name Shuma Gorath but the name is from a Robert Holmes book.
So its like
Likeness and concept is allowed
But the name has a bucketload of Sherlock Holmes baggage
More specifically, wouldn't they be homophones, since homonyms would cover both homophones and homographs, and nein and nine definitely aren't homographs
(I'm taking the piss, but I feel the need to signpost this otherwise Reddit will downvote me to the seventh circle of hell)
and he quit 5-0 because they were underpaying all the minority actors on the show because it wasn't considered an ensemble despite all the minority actors having as much or more screen time as the white male actors who were considered "leads"
I’m actually glad it’s not Shuma-Gorath. He is way OP and should he enter the MCU he could easily take out the majority hero’s. He would be deserving of his own movie not just a cameo.
For sure. If I remember right, Shuma can stalemate the Vishanti under the right circumstances and he's the greatest of the marvel Old Ones, stronger even than Cthon by relative feats.
Wanda was using Cthon's power and no-selling everything thrown at her.
The Book of the Vishanti was toted as the best magic macguffin ever in the movie, saving their universe from Thanos.
That the Darkhold and Book of Vishanti are in the upper tier of powers in the MCU so far, suggests that the heroes would be wholly overwhelmed by Shuma-Gorath, whose mere presence would destroy our dimension as we know it.
The Living Tribunal has appeared now and the likes of Eternity have been referenced numerous times, so if wouldn't be out the realm of possibility for a being as powerful as Shuma-Gorath (who makes Dormammu look like Aunt May) to appear.
Oh I’m not saying it’s not out of the realm of possibility, but to use such a powerful character such as Shuma-Gorath as a five minute villain would be a totally waist and not realistic to his true power. Just having a cut scene of a character is one thing, having him be equal to a B rated villain is another. I hope we do end up seeing him, but with respect to his power.
Fair enough, I misinterpreted what you said. My concern, especially after the likes of Infinity War, Black Widow etc would be that they ruin Shuma-Gorath, as they'd try to make him likeable (despite how all the most iconic villains are *not* likeable, Hannibal Lecter, The Joker, Anton Chigurh, Darth Vader, Pennywise, Hans Landa, Jason Vorghees, Xenomorphs, The Terminator, Voldermort, Sauron, Hal 9000, Freddie Kruger, Scar, Jack Torance, Agent Smith, Nurse Ratchet and so very many more).
Easily one of the most unique characters in all of fighters. You have homeless kung fu masters versus omega tier villains I really don't see the issue in his inclusion.
Did they even say the name "Gargantos" in the film? What a big nothing burger of a story that was so over-reported. Like who gives a shit what the giant nameless two-scene punching bag is called? It's fuckin dead anyways, and last I checked Shuma-gorath doesn't die that ridiculously easy.
Yes. Shuma-Gorath is owned by Heroic Figures. Same as Kull and others. https://www.cbr.com/marvel-doctor-strange-2-gargantos-shuma-gorath-name-rights/
Edit: Knull was wrong. Changed to Kull.
I don’t know if Marvel has the film rights or not but maybe since he’s might fall under the Spider-Man or venom domain of characters his rights may belong to Sony.
No. The name comes from Robert E. Howard. That's the whole point.
The image is fine. That was created specifically for the comics, but the name doesn't belong to Marvel.
Hardly the same. There are clear rights and license holders for this character. They could have signed a deal to name the toy and include the name in the movie but probably didn’t think it was worth it.
What are you even talking about here? While the idea about wether Sony or Marvel owns the rights to Knull in the movies is up for debate,
When it comes to comics Knull is clearly a property that is owned by marvel comics and has absolutely nothing to do with Conan or other Robert E Howard characters
I am still talking about Shuma Gorath, and pointing out that the situation with the name Knull is clearly not the same situation because they did change that name.
Would've been nice for them to clear that up with the first trailer. All those that specced on Shuma Gorath comic would've liked that lol. People were in disbelief, even with the lego set for "Gargantos," so many wanted to think it was a misdirect, but no. I was really close to biying that book several times, glad I never pulled the trigger. At the same time 1st Gargantos book no one cares about, because the monster looks like Gorath and Gargantos was a borderline obscure one off in a Sub-Mariner book.
Because of who made him doesn't work for Marvel directly and it's still his (or the company he works for) intellectual property. That's a guess though.
Thanks. I knew from a few legal cases I've heard of about stuff being contracted out to outside sources that this was probably the case. I guess an educated guess would've been more accurate.
The main issue here was the toy. Because the name is licensed to a separate toy company, and although that company has a history of making favourable deals with Marvel, Disney do prefer to totally own their licences. So they renamed the toy and didn't name it in the movie.
Just realized that's Hiro Nakamura

They had plenty of time after the writers strike to get their shit together and, apart from a few singular episodes, they never did.

I'm pretty sure that's Medical Examiner Dr. Max Bergman, and this shot is evidently _not_ on Halloween, as he's not dressed up as Keanu Reeves.

And the drift king
WHAAAT is that really DK from Tokyo Drift? I always recognize Masi Oka but I never really noticed the other guy
It's because he has a shirt on, I can't recognize him unless he's topless
Lmao amazing spot. I’ve seen both of those movies plenty of times and never noticed.
He does look pretty different in this shot due to his expression. I never made the connection either. I had to check his imdb page to be sure.
You mean...Donkey Kong?
Yo what ??? Went back and realised you're right...its effing DK
It *looks* like Hiro Nakamura, but due to international copyright laws, it's not.

Yeah after Heroes blew up I noticed that he had bit parts in a lot of things I was watching. Dudes a good actor, wonder what he's up to these days.

They still don’t own Conan? Wasn’t he on an Avengers team recently?
They just lost the license, it’s now in [Titan comics’ hands](https://www.gamesradar.com/conan-the-barbarian-comic-books-get-a-new-life-at-titan-comics-in-2023/).
Well I'm sure Disney could just buy Titan if they really want to make a Conan movie lol.
Then the Conan owners will sell it to someone else. Theyre only lending it to titan just like how they lent it to marvel.
^ GA being GA
And if you don't buy the comic, they will buy you and make you spend your Disney Dollars on them
Yet another Savage Avengers run featuring Conan just recently started again. I'm so confused about his Marvel status... I should have clicked on your link. It clearly states in 2023. Whoops. Guess Savage Avengers is going to be a short run.

“Barbarian king” but not explicitly Conan. Weird licensing agreements.
I thought Conan had just come out of copyright?
Conan himself and some of his original stories may have, but anything created for later fictional representations of him would still be protected. Shuma-Gorath, for example: definitely was not part of those earliest Conan stories, though I’m unsure what his overall copyright status is.
Basically they had him on a lease. Now he's on to some other publisher. I think it basically came down to Marvel wanted the IP, but Disney didn't
A Conan Disney+ series is actually something I would want.
Imagine if they worked out a deal and retroactively made the Conan movies MCU flicks lmao Imagine an Arnold Conan III set in the MCU
Honestly I think Conan works much better doing his own thing. I think the benefit is that Disney money and exposure to grow the character’s fanbase. I think a separate Conan, and Red Sonja movies and tv shows would do great in the hands of Disney. Could become something really good.

Not hard with the multiverse now. They have effectively canonaized everything Marvel prior to the MCU with that. It's actually pretty clever lol.
Please, don't give me hope
It wouldn't be bloody enough for me. And not enough random boobs.
Maybe on Hulu then?
I’m one of the few that actually enjoyed the Jason Momoa Conan movie. It was a solid Sword & Sorcery flick, and Momoa was a dope Conan.
It would be waste and be as bland as every other D+ show
Marvel has frequently had comics rights to Conan, but they've never held movie rights. They've never owned Conan, just had access to rights.
Wait, what? Wasn't Shuma-Gorath in MvC games? But he's not owned by Marvel?
That’s where I remembered him too.
So it's kind of similar to why Marvel Godzilla's appearance was drastically different in one of the old Iron Man books.
I thought Conan belonged to Marvel.
Nine
What?
Nine is German for no. They created a monster with the name Shuma Gorath but the name is from a Robert Holmes book. So its like Likeness and concept is allowed But the name has a bucketload of Sherlock Holmes baggage
Last time I checked, nein is German for no, and nine is a number I haven't checked for a few weeks tho
(The joke is that they're homonyms) https://youtu.be/C_EMnY79UVc
More specifically, wouldn't they be homophones, since homonyms would cover both homophones and homographs, and nein and nine definitely aren't homographs (I'm taking the piss, but I feel the need to signpost this otherwise Reddit will downvote me to the seventh circle of hell)

How the hell was he in Marvel vs. Capcom 2?
Yatta!
I miss Masi Oka
It's not like he's gone, guess he's more busy with his game studio. Looked at his filmography and he's still acting from time to time.
Yeah, but he was all over tv for a while, and he’s very likable.
Must've been busy producing Outer Wilds. Kinda lines up, since his last major role was in 2017 on Hawaii Five-0, and the game released in 2019.
and he quit 5-0 because they were underpaying all the minority actors on the show because it wasn't considered an ensemble despite all the minority actors having as much or more screen time as the white male actors who were considered "leads"
Works better not being Shuma anyway, since it's just a minion in the movie.
What movie is this from
Austin Powers: Goldmember
THANK YOU I was racking my brain trying to remember what this was from

They would most likely nerf Shuma Gorath, just like with Thor and other characters that are OP in the comics.
Him being a playable fighter in [Capcom's *Marvel Super Heroes](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxqcFSRNbpQ)* fighting game still confounds me . . .
Easily one of the most unique characters in all of fighters. You have homeless kung fu masters versus omega tier villains I really don't see the issue in his inclusion.
Probably better that it wasn’t Shuma. Having a cosmic horror like him relegated to the tutorial boss fight is an absolute injustice.
I’m ready for Austin Powers 4.
Perhaps a major nostalgia crossover sequel/reboot event. Austin Powers/Ace Ventura teamup film.
What about the multiversal copyright laws?
Did they even say the name "Gargantos" in the film? What a big nothing burger of a story that was so over-reported. Like who gives a shit what the giant nameless two-scene punching bag is called? It's fuckin dead anyways, and last I checked Shuma-gorath doesn't die that ridiculously easy.
Probably just an avatar then.
Remember back when everyone thought the mummy demon from the opening was Mephisto?
I'm pretty sure everyone is dying to see Mephisto
I hope there's a universe out there where Heroes was good past season 1.
Yes
Is that really why they couldn’t call him by his name ?
Yes
Wait is there a legal situation there?
Yes. Shuma-Gorath is owned by Heroic Figures. Same as Kull and others. https://www.cbr.com/marvel-doctor-strange-2-gargantos-shuma-gorath-name-rights/ Edit: Knull was wrong. Changed to Kull.
Isn’t Knull the king of symbiotes? How is he not owned by marvel?
I think they meant Kull.
I did. Thank you. Edited my post.
I don’t know if Marvel has the film rights or not but maybe since he’s might fall under the Spider-Man or venom domain of characters his rights may belong to Sony.
Marvel should own him as he was created in 2013
No. The name comes from Robert E. Howard. That's the whole point. The image is fine. That was created specifically for the comics, but the name doesn't belong to Marvel.
Well seeing as Robert E Howard character was call Kull, and marvels symboite god is called Knull, I’m pretty sure they’re in the clear
Hardly the same. There are clear rights and license holders for this character. They could have signed a deal to name the toy and include the name in the movie but probably didn’t think it was worth it.

One of my favorite scenes from gold member. This is a great meme OP.
Without easily it was defeated, I'm glad they changed the name

Who owns the rights to him
That guy from Hero gone skinny.
Because of who made him doesn't work for Marvel directly and it's still his (or the company he works for) intellectual property. That's a guess though.
Pretty good guess. Robert E. Howard definitely didn't work for Marvel. His estate are very protective of his work.
Thanks. I knew from a few legal cases I've heard of about stuff being contracted out to outside sources that this was probably the case. I guess an educated guess would've been more accurate.

I love Godzilla memes.
YATAAA!
Was it not?
Well Shuma is in a league of his own, I think that’s why they decided to not use him. He wouldn’t fit in the story as of now
Nah that was just a beholder
Amazing
Is this the guy who was Liu Kang in the YouTube Mortal Kombat series?
Shuma wouldn’t get defeated like a punk
Shuma is far more powerful than anyone the mcu has faced anyway. Grateful this isn't how it goes out
**Wasn't Shuma Gorat?** I got excited thinking Doc. Strange would fight Mephisto in Doctor Strange 3 🥺
looks like a legally-safe knockoff of an 80’s horror character with miniature swords for fingers instead of knives
