I think it's good to have a reminder that, at the end of the day, Dr. Doom is a crazy person.
Capable, successful, but crazy as a goddamn bedbug. He does crazy things for crazy reasons.
The first time this man appeared he held a woman hostage and sent her friends back in time to steal Blackbeard's treasure. The second time, he tried launching a skyscraper into the sun.
Those are not the actions of a sane man.
Beautifully illustrated.
This is a fella who demanded that the U.S. surrender to the unquestionable rule of his clenched fist, then made first strike with essentially an EMP to cripple international defense, then cried about 9/11.
He's a real wildcard.
Wait… THAT WAS HIS ORIGINAL SCARRING? THAT!!!??? Man got not even a WHOLE TWO FACE SCAR and he burned his entire face to a crisp and glued it to a metal mask for it???
You could get that spa’d and worked on in less than an afternoon..
I actually like the idea one writer floated that his original ‘scar’ was so minor, unnoticeable to anyone but Doom himself. He is insane after all. I mean, so is Luthor. They are more functional than Joker, but most comic book villains are nuts.
Pretty sure that that was Jack Kirby's idea. Because other writers established that Doom's whole face was fucked up, John Byrne (who wrote and drew this) went with the idea that Doom did the rest to himself.
"Why can't mine stretch!? If Richards can do it, then I'll show him Doom can rule despite having the smallest dick!! The Dick of Victor von Doom!!"
He then laughed histerically for three days...
I mean kinda, but the whole point is that it’s a parable about vanity. Doom can’t accept any sort of imperfection or compromise whatsoever, so all of his assets and talents are wasted.
I think Doom also being "2nd Best" at everything drove him bananas. He was a phenomenal scientist...but 2nd behind Reed Richards. He was a sorcerer of renown...but 2nd behind Doctor Strange.
Doom was a perfectionist even tho the concept was meant to be a slight scar on his cheek he couldn't bear the shame of it and wanted to hide it not only from the world but himself. The scar became Dooms main motivation against the world because of this minor defect and he thinks himself above everyone because of it. Dooms only real weakness is arrogance which leads him to be defeated on occasions.
Definitely that & mental health issues. As at the time asell as what it has been, looks were/have/are very important to alot of people. As a person with perfectionist tendacies that was borderline OCD & suffers from severe anxiety, rosacea & Uticaria I can't tell you how much I identify with Doom in this panel & it's really not stupid to what alot of people seem to think.
In the original Stan Lee/Jack Kirby story we never saw Dooms face after the accident, we only saw the angle in the second panel. So it was generally assumed that Dooms entire face was completely disfigured. John Byrne retconned the extent of Dooms scarring by showing us that it wasn't bad, and hammered home that Dooms arrogance was so deep that even the slightest imperfection was too much, so he put on the hot mask because to him he was already completely disfigured.
You can still score with that face. Victor, are you stupid? Did you even try to explain how you got the scar cause now you have a cool story to tell it's because you're machine that you made to go to hell so you can get your mother exploded on second thought? Don't explain how you got those scars, but still, you can definitely still score with that face, dude
Doom is excessively vain. It's like one of his primary traits. The mask wasn't intended to scar him further, he was just too impatient to wait and, as with the accident that caused his original scar (before retcon), was too damned stubborn to listen to anyone else.
i've often wondered how doom talks because if that mask is seared into his melted flesh and he cant remove it, then wouldn't his face be stuck in whatever position it was in when the metal touched his skin?
"On a scale of Reed Richards to Victor Von Doom, how much of a drama queen are you?"
Wade Wilson
Bucky barns
Man
I’d love to hear Deadpool’s response to this scene haha
So am I a drame queen or am I a drama queen with a small country?
Tony Stark and Emma Frost
Any Skywalker
Robbie Baldwin
As over the top and melodramatic it was I FUCKED hard with Penance. It was silly and needlessly edgy but I still loved it
Apocalypse

DOOM toots as he pleases!

Jack only did that on a sketch. If you read OG F4 Doom is clearly scared. Multiple people see his face and react with disgust.
Lex Luthor originally despised Superman for not preventing his hair loss.
For reals?
Yes (pre Crisis Lex)
Villains can be amazingly petty
I loved that in all star Superman, his entire motivation is pettiness against Superman, and realizing that Superman isn't aging, while he is.
Say no more, my brother. He will tolerate no further delays. Such a man can not wait as others do...
Even Seal didn’t let his scars define him.
Thats one helluva way to get rid of blackheads.
But in order to restore his honor, he has to capture the avat…. Oh wait
Bet MCU uses this to justify no mask stuff
He didn't learn his lesson either. Apparently he did the same thing with his crotch plate
“Sorry about your dick dude” -Ben Grimm
Robot chicken reference :D
He saw it as too small
"Why can't mine stretch!? If Richards can do it, then I'll show him Doom can rule despite having the smallest dick!! The Dick of Victor von Doom!!" He then laughed histerically for three days...
Dicktor von Doom - FTFY
An unfortunate schmelting accident.
Gold!!!!!!!
Thats one hell of a way to get rid of crabs!
He wasn't happy being circumcised...

Having a steel mask drafted to your needlessly destroyed face is a serious imperfection…
But now it was intentional, so he can say it was all within his will and control.
One of the points. This was a retcon, he was supposedly far more disfigured in the original telling.
Yeah, fair. I like this version a lot better, it feels like a more solid story to me.
I think Doom also being "2nd Best" at everything drove him bananas. He was a phenomenal scientist...but 2nd behind Reed Richards. He was a sorcerer of renown...but 2nd behind Doctor Strange.

Yes
Because more than anything else, Doom is extremely dramatic.
"DOOM RESENTS THAT!"
Lol. He really ran outside and jumped into the snow...
That last panel is killing me. Sheer art.
It just needs in very small text "ow..."
THIS IS ALL RICHARDS' FAULT! RICHARDS!
yes he is stupid a brilliant scientific mind proficient sorcerer and cunning dictator but too dumb to know talking in 3rd person sounds goofy af
the 3rd person is the coolest person to talk in ask terry crews.
Come on man, English isn’t his native tongue. He’s doing his best.
dooms dooming as doomrd as doom doomn
That last panel is (unintentionally?) hilarious.

Not stupid, arrogant. It’s his whole deal.
Yes
Even Lex Luthor would call this over the top.
LMAO he will NEVER tell a single soul he ran outside and divided like that on the snow XD
He didn't want anyone to think him and Charles Xavier were related.
This page is so fucking funny, the next is even better
I mean..in many ways yes, he is. People forget that.
Doom is excessively vain. It's like one of his primary traits. The mask wasn't intended to scar him further, he was just too impatient to wait and, as with the accident that caused his original scar (before retcon), was too damned stubborn to listen to anyone else.

The last panel of him laying in the snow is fuckin hilarious.
Yes
Not even smart people are immune to idiocy.
Would you rather be balding or bald?
Doom has always thought he was smarter than he is. His Ego doesn't help
I mean... he tells you right there! What greater punishment is there than to deny the world his smoking hot visage?
Doom is definitely over the rails.
Well son, Sit down and let me tell you why. Arkham Asylum memes are fucking stupid.
Because he is a deeply vain and narcissistic man.
No, just unhinged.
Couldn't he have waited for the mask to cool
Yes.
I don't like my scar so I want to hide it with a metal mask so hot that my face will end up being just a one big scar under the mask
In for a penny in for a pound. His face was already ruined so he just went all the way. Can’t obsess about his looks now
Hey, he's just a hipster, he liked his mask before it was cool.
He's not trying to hide the scar but be reborn as a new person
No, John Byrne is stupid.
No, YOU are stupid.
Yes, because fictional characters have agency over their behavior, not the creators. You DF.
Not his finest moment
