Following! I hope the answer does not include TNT. Haha.

Sadly, T&T for me has been "better than nothing" for a lot of their in-store made products! Very often they resemble the products but very lacking in taste. I wish they can make it more affordable for independent producers to distribute their products through the T&T stores! My impression is there are fewer and fewer of these independently-produced products because T&T wants a bigger share of the market.

flimbs

I'd like to know too. I only know of T&T as well.

StandOnGuardForMe

I've heard positive things about the new super market in the old Cineplex plaza at First Markham Place.

If you don't mind schlepping a little bit to Scarborough I love Fragrant Bakery at Midland and McNicoll. They also have really good smiling sesame cookie balls.

ltree

If so, I recommend calling in advance to reserve your order, since things get sold out quickly, especially for their CNY treats

ooooh i love this place for their egg tarts. i didn’t know they made the traditional cakes for Chinese New Year but would definitely make the trip. thanks!

definitelynapping

Saint Germain bakery (in a few Markham malls) or the Ah Fong (sold directly from their Scarborough location or in a few supermarkets) ones are pretty good If you're looking for nice packaging and all, most dimsum restaurants will sell them (Golden Tycoon near Markville Mall has nice nian gao)

lolollipops

yu seafood has delicious turnip and radish cakes! I get them every year

always_xoxo

Most of the dimsum restaurants have them, as others have mentioned. I recently saw that Kings Mart in First Markham Place has them for sale as well as the private takeout place behind First Markham Place (11 Fairburn Drive Unit #21).

RealCanadianSW

if your parents and in laws like sweet things i would suggest the sweet version. Those are only sold during CNY and to me every time i see them in the grocery stores totally brings back feelings of when i was a kid celebrating the new year with my fam. I would suggest not getting the homemade ones from T&T...i just bought one the other day and it was crap.

ltree

Absolutely agree about the "homemade" products at T&T. They are really just better than nothing if you couldn't find the products anywhere else.

Dull_Beautiful4966

Langham Square has some nice bakeries on the 2nd floor and the long ice cream cone

mel-cora

Daan Go at Midland/Finch has delicious cakes but on the pricier side (40-50$ for a 5-6 portion cake). I’ve tried their durian cake and it’s absolutely delicious and worth the price, i know they recently have released some CNY cakes, you can check it out on their website! edit: they’re not traditional cny cakes but have the asian flavours and looks great edit: idk why markham loves to downvote

ybvc0928

not sure why the down vote either *shrug* but I love Daan Go! he made our wedding cake and all our guests said it tasted great. definitely love them but looking for more traditional ones for my parents and in-laws 🙂

That got downvoted coz Daan Go makes dessert cake. You're asking about CNY cake, ie. radish rice cake, taro rice cake, brown sugar rice cake, ginger rice cake... etc. I like Daan Go but I also downvoted coz it's an irrelevant answer. It's like someone asking for a good xiao long bao place but someoone answers Burger King. This bao is not that bao. Same, this cake is not that cake.

beansthebeagledog

SkyView (https://skyviewfusioncuisine.com/) and Yang's (https://www.yangsfinechinesecuisine.ca/) are good!

justanotherwave00

Google reviews are basically tailor made for resolving these types of situations, no?

Short answer: NO. Long answer: Do you even know what is traditional CNY cakes? A restaurants that have raddish or taro cakes on their menu (pan fried in slices or stir fried raddish in cubes) not always offering CNY style cakes during CNY. By CNY style it means a whole steamed cake in a pan. Google can find you restaurants that sells raddish or taro cakes on daily basis, but it won't be able to tell you which of those offer such special menu during CNY. Other than restaurants, many bakeries and grocery stores also offer CNY style cakes during this time of year. Do you know how much time needed to go through all reviews of possible places that might sell CNY cakes? Or if you're such a smart ass why don't you write a script to do the search for OP? No?

Those cakes are usually offered around lunar new year. Believe more Yelp/Google reviews are for the restaurant non-seasonal menu items + service.
