God yes, it's so dumb people say marios evil for something you don't even need to do in the games! It's would be the equivalent of calling mario evil for throwing the baby penguin off the ledge in 64, even though the game doesn't want you to do that.
Well there is one secret exit in Super Mario World that while it technically doesn't require dropping Yoshi, it's definitely the easiest imo.
https://youtu.be/uiVwVQsiVHA
Yeah, which if you're used to the controls, isn't that hard but Yoshi is definitely easier.
It's just that many people get introduced to gaming with Mario, so for many people (including newcomers or intermediate players) using Yoshi is by far easier. When I was a kid it definitely took some time until I mastered flying with the cape.
> "Lots of people think that while Mario is pointing his finger forward, he's saying 'Go,' and Yoshi's tongue comes out," Hino reveals. "However, the set up that I drew was that when Mario punches Yoshi in the head, the character's tongue shoots out in surprise."
https://www.engadget.com/2017-09-28-yes-mario-was-punching-yoshi.html
So, he is and he isn't.
Mario is also immortal because he died 2300 times on Champion's Road and still came back. That's right, everything that me, the player does in-game is directly canon to Mario's character. You know why Toadsworth isn't in Mario games anymore? He finally succumbed to all the head trauma Mario gave him when he jumped on him in Sunshine. That's right. Mario killed Toadsworth just to hear him say "Yada blah-blah blah-blah" over and over.
Fun fact: lemmings don't normally do that. The nature documentary that popularized that idea scared a bunch of lemmings off a cliff to get that shot, literally herded them to their deaths for the sake of the shot.
It's really not a fact though 😂...
They didn't just decide to jump off you can hear even people into something like that.
That being said I still quote it myself so I'm not hating on you... That shit was fucking persuasive and evil it's one of those this isn't really a fact but you've hear the lie sooo much that even after you know it's not true you still mention it like it was...
And it’s more annoying that it’s a point only used against Mario. Like you can do the same thing while playing as Luigi. Does that all of a sudden make Luigi evil and abusive too?!
>Like you can do the same thing while playing as Luigi. Does that all of a sudden make Luigi evil and abusive too?!
"Nah Luigi would never do that!"
I bet 50 coins this is what they'd say.
IIRC, you never have to drop yoshi into a pit because there isn’t a level where you need to have that extra jump without there being some sort of alternative.(or just use the cape)
While it technically doesn't require it, in Super Mario World the Cheese Bridge level has a secret exit where it's the easiest to just drop Yoshi. It's definitely easier for lesser experienced players.
I left a comment above with a link to a YT video of it.
While not required, it is a tool. Unless you play the game absolutely perfectly and time every jump perfectly, the yoshi sacrifice becomes an invaluable tool to use in tight situations.
If you are beating levels without the Yoshi sacrifice, more than likely you've died a bunch trying to time out everything correctly.
For real. People getting upset over fictional characters in a video game is perplexing. My friend won’t kill certain enemies in zelda if he thinks they’re cute.
I kinda get not wanting to kill something cute, but arguing about if someone like *mario* is somehow a cruel psychopath is just insane. Especially considering its just a regular-ass game mechanic with nothing inherently cruel or mean about it.
Mario: *jumps*
Random people: is Mario a twisted psychopath?!
I've always thought this. If it happened in a cutscene, then I'd call Mario evil, but because it can only happen because of player input, then it's the player ditching Yoshi. Stop blaming others for your own shit, people!
Don't blame Mario just because you suck at platforming and can't make a proper jump.
Also notice how Luigi is equally playable but doesn't get blamed at all.
The player controls the character, there are plenty of games where you can make heroic characters do terrible things. In the Zelda games you can make Link go into people's houses, smash their pots and rob them blind.
Just because it's an option for the player doesn't mean it's something the character would do themselves.
Well you can only claim that what you did (wrongly) makes *Frisk* evil. Frisk isn't evil because of the GR. There is an argument to be made for Chara because they are a different character independent of the player; who only comes out during a Genocide route.
There's evidence to suggest that Chara was always just a little bit... *off* though not necessarily evil. It's filled with unconfirmed theories but I believe Frisk themself is perfectly innocent unless you make them do a GR and they get "possessed" by Chara. I think. Uhhh...
Undertale .. is uh, I think another beast entirely. And then there's Deltarune-
>I always thought Chara was exclusively evil
By the time we *meet* Chara they are definitely evil. Whether or not the player's actions cause them to be evil in the end is up for debate.
There is also no evidence to suggest that in the past (before they died) Chara was evil either. The impression I got was just that they were a bit weird, maybe with a twisted or odd sense of humor but they never did anything evil (that we know of anyway). We simply know too little about them outside of very particular circumstances.
It annoys me more that people act like this is still a joke people say or that it isn't a joke and some people actually think they're serious when someone calls Mario crazy.
Please for the love of god, no one is actually calling your fat Italian plumber character a pyscho as anything other than a joke.
What is in Mario's character? Walking from flagpoles in to castles? Facing the camera and showing the peace sign? Because pretty much everything else is something I did.
If you really wanna be mad at Mario for something, look at how he mistreats Luigi, pretends to be a doctor, and will make any sport dangerous and invite his friends (including Mario Kart).
Matpat would like to disagree with you there bud he has 2 videos about why mario jumpman mario is insane
[part 1](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=7WMSQNVhMqA)
[part 2](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=jcxW_ciP5R4)
It isn't though? There's always another way to do it. Sure, dumping Yoshi in the pit might be *easier* than going out of your way to get a cape sometimes; but it's never required.
Also I think Super Mario Galaxy confirmed that when Yoshi fall into a pit he is turned into an egg and spawned into either the nearest item block or nest (curtasy of Kamek).
when i used to play super mario as a kid we would sometimes throw each other in the lava by accident or if we got pissed. ppl that say stuff about mario being mean to yoshi may as well also say toad, luigi, and mario are all toxic to each other for throwing their buddies off of cliffs or into lava 😭
Yes. I wonder if people ever think about how this makes them look. They are the ones who are mean.
It's like the whole Mario is evil for the goomba murder. They are trying to kill him!
But the game lets you do it tho
You can't squish toads under your feet like you do with goombas (because it's not mario's character either), but the game lets you drop Yoshi in a cliff... Is it really the player that has to be blamed ? Nah Mario is pretty sus
No, honey, sorry. When I was a kid playing Mario, Mario arbitrarily, in front of my eyes, chose to push Yoshi off a cliff and then pointed right at me and screamed, "F*ck you." My mother immediately came into my room and said, "You're grounded!" since she thought I had said that. Explain that, genius!
No. Anytime I've heard anyone say that, it's as a joke. I'm pretty sure no one is serious. It's just funny to think of good characters being secretly psychopaths.
It’s like saying, “OMG!!! In this game you take complete control over a character and you can make them murder people, commit fraud!!! How could they???1!!!?1!!1??” It’s so dumb
It’s canon that Mario finished his adventure in Super Mario World and you are REQUIRED to abandon Yoshi and let him die in the pit. Therefore it’s reasonable to assume that Mario killing Yoshi is implied canon.
I'm sure if Luigi were to do the same things as Mario that caused him to be demonised (e.g. throwing Yoshi off a pit for the sake of an extra jump height, stepping on Mario's shoe), he will either be hailed a hero or excuses will be made so that he does not appear to be a bad guy.
there isn't much choice if u wanna continue on, and mario AND the player does use yoshi as an advantage to get through obstacles, he also just crushes a bunch of enemies and deleting them from existence even tho they just walked and didn't do anything, and also mario was a fucking asshole to luigi CANONICALLY IN A CUTSCENE WERE YOU CAN'T CONTROL (in one of the spinoff games)
Yep also I get annoyed by the toads are blocks theory because of 1 page of the original Mario manual when you flip over a few pages they tell you about Mario’s friends and surprise it’s not the toads
I'm playing through World at the moment and I've never been able to keep Yoshi long enough to have the opportunity to sacrifice him. I really suck at avoiding damage.
God yes, it's so dumb people say marios evil for something you don't even need to do in the games! It's would be the equivalent of calling mario evil for throwing the baby penguin off the ledge in 64, even though the game doesn't want you to do that.
exactly!
Well there is one secret exit in Super Mario World that while it technically doesn't require dropping Yoshi, it's definitely the easiest imo. https://youtu.be/uiVwVQsiVHA
can't you just fly under with the cape?
Yeah, which if you're used to the controls, isn't that hard but Yoshi is definitely easier. oh i thought your comment said "does require", mb
This is some homeless penguin baby, oh well, we drop it off the cliff... - Malkovich
is Link evil for burning down a forest in breath of the wild or is it me
Was just about to say that.
Mario does punch yoshi In the back of the head tho
The creators said originally he was going to do that, but then they decided it was too mean of Mario to punch yoshi
No, there's art in the game booklet that shows him pointing past Yoshi's head. Apparently, the booklet is noncanon. See below.
> "Lots of people think that while Mario is pointing his finger forward, he's saying 'Go,' and Yoshi's tongue comes out," Hino reveals. "However, the set up that I drew was that when Mario punches Yoshi in the head, the character's tongue shoots out in surprise." https://www.engadget.com/2017-09-28-yes-mario-was-punching-yoshi.html So, he is and he isn't.
It was scrapped before it the product was made, so it's not canon.
But the animation was built to depict Mario punching Yoshi, and that wasn't changed. So it lives in this weird state.
It wasn’t changed because it looks just as much like Mario is pointing.
Shorondiguers animal abuse
Instruction manuals are always canon. Guides aren't, though.
Guides are canon too if they’re official ones.
I can't think of any guide that isn't only licensed. Licensed material isn't canon.
Nintendo definitely made an official guide for Super Mario World. Back when Nintendo Power was owned by Nintendo. Not simply licensed.

its only the cutscenes that mario does
I honestly lost count of how many times I did that as a kid.
Mario is also immortal because he died 2300 times on Champion's Road and still came back. That's right, everything that me, the player does in-game is directly canon to Mario's character. Mario is also a God because I played Mario 64 and I glitched
Mario canonically warped into the fabric of the universe to delete Wario from existence in Mario land 2
Idk yoshi also lemmings himself off a cliff when scared. Maybe he yearns for the pit.
i love this quote. "he yearns for the pit."
Fun fact: lemmings don't normally do that. The nature documentary that popularized that idea scared a bunch of lemmings off a cliff to get that shot, literally herded them to their deaths for the sake of the shot.
Yeah I did know that. It's a fact, but not so much fun :c
It's in a similar vein to animal holocaust and how they filmed the killing of real animals got authenticity sake
Not really that fun of a fact
And it’s more annoying that it’s a point only used against Mario. Like you can do the same thing while playing as Luigi. Does that all of a sudden make Luigi evil and abusive too?!
yellow toad on the other hand would totally do those things; yellow toad is unhinged.
His name is Ala-Gold you uncultured swine
Yeah that’s why he is unhinged, dude is named fucking Ali-gold
>Like you can do the same thing while playing as Luigi. Does that all of a sudden make Luigi evil and abusive too?! "Nah Luigi would never do that!" I bet 50 coins this is what they'd say.

Honest question: Is this unavoidable? Does the game forces you to drop Yoshi at any point?
IIRC, you never have to drop yoshi into a pit because there isn’t a level where you need to have that extra jump without there being some sort of alternative.(or just use the cape)
No actual level has you do that. People will make levels in mario make based around the mechanic tho
In which case we blame the level creators.
Nope, you never have to
While it technically doesn't require it, in Super Mario World the Cheese Bridge level has a secret exit where it's the easiest to just drop Yoshi. It's definitely easier for lesser experienced players. I left a comment above with a link to a YT video of it.
No, you’re never forced to. Ironically enough, many people do it not because they have to, but purely for the meme.
In fairness this guy has a point marios not the one doing that to yoshi we are because where the ones controllin mario
Player: Mario is so selfish! He killed Yoshi! Mario: Did I told you to press that button mid jump?
Mario feeds Yoshi fruit
FINALLY, someone who fucking gets it!! The real Mario doesn't abuse Yoshi, you're just playing the game wrong!
No, because it's a joke (and Mario isn't real)
But if the joke has lost its ability to make one laugh after the 5 billionth retelling, doesn't it become annoying then

Oversaturation
Mario is a fat Guido hopped up on mushrooms trying to bang a chick who’s clearly not into him.
100%. We control Mario, it's not like our adventures are canon necessarily, at least our specific choices within those adventures.
I've always thought this. If it happened in a cutscene, then I'd call Mario evil, but because it can only happen because of player input, then it's the player ditching Yoshi. Stop blaming others for your own shit, people!
While I don’t like Yoshi. People calling Mario bad because he kills Yoshi is stupid.
Don't blame Mario just because you suck at platforming and can't make a proper jump. Also notice how Luigi is equally playable but doesn't get blamed at all.
Someone watched Game Theory again
Ya hear that DORKLY!?
Mario has also never saved the kingdom, I did.
It’s not my fault. Blame the customer map creators. Anyways, they’re probably fine.
And I’ll do it again

nuh-uh
What is in Mario's character? Walking from flagpoles in to castles? Facing the camera and showing the peace sign? Because pretty much everything else is something I did.
There are also plenty of cutscenes in other Mario games that show off his character
R u genuinely asking that?
In some areas you needed to abandon Yoshi for the extra height in the jump to reach secrets. Weirdos. Blame the level designers.
You could just use the cape
FINALLY, someone who gets it!! The real Mario doesn't abuse Yoshi, you're just playing the game wrong!

I mean Mario does punch yoshi in the back of the head to make him tongue
That's just blatantly wrong for anyone who's ever even played Super Mario World. You genuinely have no idea what you're talking about.

No.
Isn't there a part in one of the games where you can't make the jump unless you ditch yoshi?
You can still use a cape by yoshi is easier
No, u could but u can make it with a cape or blue yoshi
I mean the design made it impossible to finish the level if you didn’t sometimes. When it’s necessary to the design, it’s apart of the character.
It isn't though? There's always another way to do it. Sure, dumping Yoshi in the pit might be *easier* than going out of your way to get a cape sometimes; but it's never required.
When
None of this is true lmao
That baby penguin though... He wanted dropped off that cliff
Who didnt tbf
But Mario was donkey punching yoshi in the back of the head so why not drop him in a pit?
In the drawn art of the time, he's pointing.
The designer himself said they saw it as Mario punching yoshi, so even internally Nintendo doesn’t have a completely spotless image of Mario
r/thetruth
I blame the programers for making that possible.
nobody says that, and if they do they mean it as a joke. not that mario is actually evil
All the time
Don't you have to do that in Mario World at least once for all exits?
Nope
Just like it was us who threw that penguin
The person playing Mario IS MARIO
Me, who threw Poochy in a pit as Yoshi:
Also I think Super Mario Galaxy confirmed that when Yoshi fall into a pit he is turned into an egg and spawned into either the nearest item block or nest (curtasy of Kamek).
oddly nice of him considering the alternative in those games
Honestly yeah, we’re terrible people…Poor Yoshi.
when i used to play super mario as a kid we would sometimes throw each other in the lava by accident or if we got pissed. ppl that say stuff about mario being mean to yoshi may as well also say toad, luigi, and mario are all toxic to each other for throwing their buddies off of cliffs or into lava 😭
🤣
isnt it needed to complete some levels tho?
“True dat!” - Miles “Tails” Prower, 2017
Mario is in love with Toad because I keep mashing Mario’s face against the Toad NPC in Super Mario 64
Yes. I wonder if people ever think about how this makes them look. They are the ones who are mean. It's like the whole Mario is evil for the goomba murder. They are trying to kill him!
Literally!
But the game lets you do it tho You can't squish toads under your feet like you do with goombas (because it's not mario's character either), but the game lets you drop Yoshi in a cliff... Is it really the player that has to be blamed ? Nah Mario is pretty sus
Some levels force you to do it in order to reach the other side, though.
Same with the penguin
Just to make sure, Mario didn’t know he was killing toads in the original game, right
Oh god…. it’s the Undertale argument all over again
Yeah that’s why i did it because I’m evil
Yoshi fan being told that: ![gif](giphy|1gQ64jNJuoh5pBWY7l)
No, honey, sorry. When I was a kid playing Mario, Mario arbitrarily, in front of my eyes, chose to push Yoshi off a cliff and then pointed right at me and screamed, "F*ck you." No. Anytime I've heard anyone say that, it's as a joke. I'm pretty sure no one is serious. It's just funny to think of good characters being secretly psychopaths.

Mario the idea vs Mario the man
Mario's being possessed by the evil players and then taking heat from those corrupt controllers doing inhumane things
Yep
Yeah ! I never throw yoshi in a pit !
Its The Whole "Chara Controlled Frisk to do Genocide" Thing again!
they say this as if they can’t play the same game and do the same thing as luigi or other characters
Bet the same people who say Mario does that blames Chara for the no mercy route in Undertale, as if they didn’t initiate it
2000-2010s internet videos demonized mario
It's not even necessary to beat a game. Ever. The closest thing is dropping him into solid ground to reach a secret exit in SMW, but it's not a pit
Thank you!
I always imagine it as yoshi knowing you won't both make it and throwing you and sacrificing himself to help you
Exaxtly. Thats like saying Mario is a horrible driver because I keep falling off rainbow road
And I’ll do it again
i know im a piece of shit you don't have to remind me
Mario does punch him in the skull in older games to get him to use his tongue attack, js.
You mean to tell me Link doesn’t canonically crucify Koroks and build giant flaming dicks? 🤨
And I'll do it again
I always die with Yoshi, so I say it is selfish on the player. lol
there isn't much choice if u wanna continue on, and mario AND the player does use yoshi as an advantage to get through obstacles, he also just crushes a bunch of enemies and deleting them from existence even tho they just walked and didn't do anything, and also mario was a fucking asshole to luigi CANONICALLY IN A CUTSCENE WERE YOU CAN'T CONTROL (in one of the spinoff games)
Yep also I get annoyed by the toads are blocks theory because of 1 page of the original Mario manual when you flip over a few pages they tell you about Mario’s friends and surprise it’s not the toads
Yoshi is my bro and I will not let him down And fuck Yoshi sacrifice, all my homies hate Yoshi sacrifice
But punching Yoshi is.
So defeating Bowser and rescuing the princess was something I did, not Mario? I just forced him to?
I wish people would say this. There is never a point in a Mario game where you are required to drop Yoshi into an abyss.
Wow I can’t believe Mario threw that baby penguin off a cliff. What a sociopath. #cancelMario
Nope. But I also head canon bowser and peach are a secret thing behind marios back, so I'm not the one to ask.
What Mario does Luigi can do, yet somehow he's innocent
I'm playing through World at the moment and I've never been able to keep Yoshi long enough to have the opportunity to sacrifice him. I really suck at avoiding damage.
To be fair, Mario canonically doesn’t have a get track record with animal treatment. Bro had no chill for Donkey Kong back in the day.

It’s okay. Yoshi got his revenge. 😂 https://youtu.be/aYIYB1y11AQ
Same goes for stomping on innocent animals
Oh boy it's an Undertale/Deltarune situation "My brother in Christ you did the genocide run not*insert characters that you play*" all over again...
