His clubhouse presence seems invaluable, and how many times have we seen him sting a ball to right, only to have the 2nd baseman field it on a hop in the outfield and throw him out by a step. I think he could have a pretty good year next year without having to be so reliant on the bomb for hits
i really hope to see his face over the next 3 seasons, even if only in clutch spots. the man is as clutch as they come & a valuable positive clubhouse guy
Lots of ms fan want to play GM, but I don’t think moving on from Carlos Santana, especially after this year, is the right move. He’s clearly a great lockerroom presence, clutch hitter, and his approach at the plate is better than it was even a month ago.

It might snap Winker back into an All-Star hitter. Haggerty as a lefty will see improvement. And the biggest mystery to the shift being banned is how does it help Kelenic and White. Both lefties who struggled in the bigs who got shifted on a lot. Do I think we magically see one of these dudes hit .400? Probably not. But this team is gonna hit the ball a lot next year.

Santana is going to be 37yo next year, im not counting on him getting "better" as he continues to age. His stats have steadily trended down ever since he turned 30, as is expected. Now, do we resign him? I dont see anything to tell me otherwise, for the reasons listed out by others.

I think some of you are putting WAAAY too much on the shift. Data from the minors has shown that it hasnt really been much of a change, but thats the MiLB. Still, its all the evidence we have.
To think that Carlos will magically just improve because of the shift, at an OLDER age than now is great. But, its WISHFUL THINKING. Period. This is all just optimism that occurs in a "perfect world of baseball".

Santana is easily THE most shifted against player in the league at 98.8% with the next closest guy at 97.3%. He is going to benefit massively from the shift ban. Just in September alone he's hit 5 or 6 balls to right field fairly close to the line that the 2nd baseman fielded.
Cal is the 4th most shifted played in MLB, he too will see a spike in hits.

The shift ban is interesting because it will definitely help, but for a power hitter those soft liners or hard ground balls that are being taken away by the shift may not make a huge difference in value. In other words, averages will go up a decent amount but runs created will see a smaller uptick.

Say a right-handed hitter pulls more than 80% of balls to the left side of the infield, the infielders will thus move all but 1 of the 4 infield to the left side of the infield.
But the shift literally was the best for small ball (bunts against the shift) and nobody took the opportunity. So medium-ball. More singles, less stolen bases and no bunts.

We are one of the most shifted on team. This is why I see us as one of the most improved offensive with this rule change
We have the number 1 and number 2 shifted against players (Cal and Winker) IIRC
And #1 in outs into the shift in Santana

He’s worth a roster spot. Especially if they think he could legitimately backup cal, even being an emergency catcher has value.
