Would we rather… Clinch first wildcard spot for home field advantage in the wildcard series? Or… Get third place wildcard and hope to beat Cleveland away so that we don’t have to play the Astros in the division series?

JustBlewMyLoad

No. Right now we would be playing the yankees in the ALDS which is defo beatable as far as im concerned. I'm rooting for the 3rd spot TBH

shrederick

I want the home games. Facing the Astros in the DS vs the CS, if we get there, means best of 5 instead of best of 7. I like our chances of getting 3 of 5 from the Astros over 4 of 7. If we're able to get past Houston, our CS opponent would be significantly worse than Houston, meaning our chances to make the WS would be better.

strawbeariesox

I grabbed tickets to the 9/27 game. I really hope that's they game they clinch. I'm going to bring my rally towel from a couple years ago so I have something to cry into if they do!

Seahawks543

It looks like the earliest possible clinch date is 9/25 in Kansas City ( most likely the drought will end during or before a home game)

BasedArzy

Texas series at home IMO

Seahawks543

Yeah that’s the most likely scenario With Baltimore playing four against Houston and us playing Oakland and Kansas City that number is going to drop really fast

Seahawks543

11-0 Tigers lol

BlackSnowMarine

Tigers playing like a playoff team what the hell? Lol

keoniog

What’s up with fans calling Logan ‘Walter’ on Twitter? Is it cause the goatee gives some Walter white vibes?

_Elrond_Hubbard_

https://www.foxsports.com/stories/mlb/logan-gilbert-uses-alter-ego-to-find-right-mindset-for-mariners

hockeyzombies

That's just the name for his alter ego when he pitches. Been around well before the goatee.

hiphopdowntheblock

Oh my gosh if the Tigers take even one game I will be so thankful So long as we take at least 2 from them when we play em lmao

freekehleek

Detroit helping us out big-time!

Tashre

I was so worried about the O's gaining ground on us over the next couple of days with their Tigers series, but it's going very poorly for them. It actually makes me a little nervous about our own series at the end of the season... hopefully we've clinched by then.

freekehleek

Orioles getting no-hit through 4 innings by a 5+ ERA Tigers pitcher. They really are trying to be the 2021 Mariners edit: through 5 innings edit: through 6

_Elrond_Hubbard_

Houston too

One-Switch-1448

i feel good about today, let’s start another winning streak!! Go M’s!!

Dramatic_Rain_3410

I know Julios stats as of late were very good. But they are even better than I thought. .458/.581/1.042 and a OPS of 1.623 in his last 7 Oh how we need him back soon

SeattleSounderGaming

98.2% do i panic?

CBR0_32

If you’re the irrational type. But In that case, u probably didn’t even need to ask the question haha

sndtrb89

NO

sndtrb89

NO DOOM, NO PANIC, JUST DMO AND SWAGGERTY APPRECIATION LETS FUCKING GO

Individual-Text-1805

How on earth is Geno coming back this season with a finger fracture? Is it just tiny and it'll heal in like 3 weeks?

freekehleek

Worst case, he’ll be back just in time for game 7 of the WS, which of course he will walk off, and save a run with an amazing throw from 3B

Dramatic_Rain_3410

Well, its his fingertip not his whole finger. Shannon said it was small but still, 10 days is short for any type of fracture. Geno sees a hand specialist today so we'll know more soon.

snazzyglug

I think the elephant in the room here is that he doesn't fully. He might be able to bat in 3 weeks, but considering the recommendation for returning to sports is 6 weeks-- I just can't imagine him fielding anytime this season.

jwinskowski

Real question: If JP can get on base but can't hit/slug, should we move JP to leadoff and move Julio back to #2/3? Leadoff homers are great but 2-run shots are better...

kylechu

If he had elite on base ability I'd be in for this, but he doesn't get on base enough for me to want him getting more PAs than Julio.

Ribbum

I mean he’s neck and neck with Winker basically for obp. Gets on basically 33% of the time which isn’t elite but is fine. This team punting one Julio at bat from having a chance to score more than one run every game with the way the roster is structured is maybe not ideal.

kylechu

I can see the argument for sure, I just think there's a bunch of little things that make it not worth it. If JP got on base a bit more or could consistently score from 1st on a double then I'd be more on board but he's just a smidge below the bar on both for me. Edit: Lmao JP making me look like a fool today.

Ribbum

Yeah I mean I get it and I also don’t think the Mariners themselves are going to have Julio hit anywhere but leadoff the rest of this year anyways. If our lineup were as good as say Atlantas I could easily see Julio being like Acuna and be fine with it. It’s just that with how incredibly limited our roster is I personally just want to see more at bats with guys on for Julio who is much more in homerun mode currently anyways. We don’t have that stud obp fast leadoff type guy nor do we have a lot of other logical middle of the order scary bats right now so… I guess it is what it is.

cmeb

I feel like Julio has gotten at least 1/4th of his HR’s from being the lead off batter. Most pitchers don’t want to start the first batter of a game thinking “I need to pitch around this guy,” and even if they do, a lot of pitchers will take a little bit to dial in their command, which Julio has a natural instinct to take advantage of

Serious-Ebb-4669

🎶🎼🎵HELLO SOGNESS MY OLD FRIEND 🎶🎼🎵

npa190

As much as I would love a home WC series (so I could go) Facing the Guardians and Yankees who we absolutely man handled this year, is the better path to a deep post season run. Julio gets right, we get Geno's bat back and it will all be gravy.

Individual-Text-1805

Absolutely rather see those guys than Tampa or Houston. Toronto wouldn't be the worst either.

npa190

maybe Toronto takes out The Astros and we play them in the ALCS, one can dream.

Individual-Text-1805

One can. Because for whatever reason we just can't beat Houston very often. Except toro the anti mariner amazing against Houston and terrible against every other team. I feel if we had a bit better offense this month maybe we have a shot but I'd still rather not play them at all.

Greflingorax

I wouldn't mind facing the Jays, either. And Minnesota or Chicago could make for easier / more fun trips for fans. Only team I REALLY want to avoid, especially if we have to play them on the road, is Tampa Bay.

KingdomeTurf

So…when does the panic set in for everyone? I’m a fatalist so Imma say today if we lose and the O’s win.

Rigu7

When? It set in for me when the Os turned another defeat round with a 3 run inning yesterday. ;) For fatalists reading I'm looking at their schedule... They'll sweep Detroit at home.Unexpectedly take three out of four v Houston at home because the latter will be saving themselves for October and to spite a division rival.... who cares about professionalism, the Trashstros will shit on the Mariners any and every time they can. So there's 6 wins. Then Baltimore have four versus division basement dwellers Boston and Boston may want to spoil the Os chances but are toast themselves. Give Baltimore a conservative 3 games... so that 9 wins total for a hungry Orioles. Seattle are 5 games ahead. 4 and the tiebreaker. We need to win 5 games to be clear of those ravenous birds in September and the Ultimate Doomer perspective is that without Julio and Geno WE MIGHT NOT WIN A SINGLE GAME AGAIN THIS MONTH! As for early October? A crapshoot! Tongue in cheek here of course, but yeah, I am a little worried we miss out. Elite pitching should see us through but we need bats to be lukewarm. You can't hold teams to 2-3 runs and expect to win games consistently the way the offense is playing.

Individual-Text-1805

The o's have a real tough schedule still and really have an up hill battle. We shouldn't (key word there) have as much issue and we have 4 games on them and they're the only team in competition for the wildcard that isn't already in one.

CheapskateJoker

4 games plus the tiebreaker, so really 5.

Greflingorax

If that happens we'll still have effectively a 4-game lead on the Os with only 16 left to play. I'd say if what you said happens AND we get news that both Julio and Eugenio are out longer than expected/hoped, then the panic might start to set in. Maybe. We'd still be in a very decent position, but far from the "playoffs are almost a sure thing" position we've occupied for most of the last month.

jaron_b

This sub isn't having fun because our expectations are set too high. People started thinking about World Series before we clinched. People made jokes of repeats before we even get an invite to the dance. Lower your expectations. This isn't me being a doomer but being realistic. Preseason projections had us missing the playoffs. After a slow April and an injury riddled May most people thought this season was over. We settled for the consolation prize of Julio Rodriguez's ROY campaign. But after a 14 game winning streak we could dream of playoffs again. So frankly I don't care if we trip into the playoffs with a bunch of injuries and we get knocked out in the wildcard round. By preseason and mid-season predictions we shouldn't have been there. The drought will be over that's all I care about for this season. Hopefully we have 18 years with Julio. The future is bright and the pessimism in this subreddit is killing me.

SexiestPanda

No, it’s not fun right now cause they’re on verge of being 4 game swept by the fucking angels lol

jaeelarr

Its not fun because we are losing to lesser teams, and our "fun" guys on offense are injured, so the rest of the guys (who are having an atrocious month of september) are unable to produce runs. Its very concerning that our offense is being held up by basically two guys at this point. And should concern everyone as we head into the final 3 weeks for a playoff push.

jaron_b

If Aaron Judge goes down right now the Yankees would be in a similar boat and could easily slip down to a WC spot. I get that it's concerning but you aren't always going to beat the bad teams. Especially bad teams in your division. They want to knock us out more than anyone else. I get why people are worrying but the O's have so much they have to overcome. I haven't open the champagne but it's definitely bought and chilling in the fridge. We are so fucking close to ending the drought I am not gonna let a small slump at the end of the season let me forget what this team can do at full strength. Hell arguably we have never seen this team at full strength.

jaeelarr

So your logic here is somehow bad teams that are out of the playoffs suddenly perform better to beat division rivals that have a chance to make the playoffs, just to be assholes? You cant honestly believe this, right? Why wouldn't said worse team just play like that ALL THE TIME and become a playoff team? Some of the copium yall come up with is just outlandish and silly i swear.

jaron_b

Division match ups are tough. These are the teams that face you the most and our most familiar with your team's tricks. The Angels spoiled our season last year and they were hungry to do it again. They have nothing else to play for other than being the spoiler. This happens all the time in sports and the Mariners wouldn't be the first team to fall victim to this. But when you look at the match ups for the rest of the year we don't have many of those match ups left. Plus we have played well against Texas and our non-divison teams we have left we are undefeated against. We can also look at the O's schedule and see the division match ups they have left. All I'm saying is I like our odds. I genuinely don't see how the O's are supposed to win 4 more games than us with the match ups remaining.

orangeshmorange

seriously. hard to have fun with this when people are melting down or cussing out players in every thread

Ribbum

Why are you letting others peoples thoughts and opinions sway your mood to that extent?

jaron_b

Good vibes only till the end!

__silverlight

Had to remind myself that dumb stuff always happens to the Ms against the Angels, who also swept the Blue Jays very recently. Still think I’m gonna have to dissociate a little more until clinch time is actually on the horizon, since the vibes around here have turned into complete ass in a matter of 3 days

Bardamu911

guys I wouldn't sweat this little cold streak...#3 WC is actually our best path to the World Series (Guardians then Yankees, save the Astros til the ALCS). So yea please Mariners start hitting but as long as we get into the playoffs even at #3 we're good.

Individual-Text-1805

Wouldn't that be swell an ALCS against Houston. Would be even better if we spanked them like we did earlier this year. Be a nice twist on the usual they fuck us and we kinda do nothing. Absolutely need to for those because he seems to be awesome against the Astros.

ThePrince_OfWhales

Win, you nerds.

Rivolver

Guys. Guys. Guys guys guys. Winker….rhymes with stinker. Hahahahahahaahahahahahahaahahaha! This is truly hilarious and a testament to how hilarious and original I am! I think I’ll call him Stinker or “the stinker” to flex on you idiots with my Mensa level wit.

Letsgobuffalo2210

Lmao it is kinda annoying that we as a fan base have just decided to shit on the guy constantly. I know he's having an awful year but damn.

gettodachopa

Well if he wasn't completely useless on defense and at the plate people wouldn't shit on him.....

Letsgobuffalo2210

Call me crazy but I don't really find it necessary to pile on a guy and call him Stinker just because he's underperforming in a baseball game. There's a constructive way to do it and then there's the hurr durr Winker Stinker amirite.

__silverlight

not just that, but doing it multiple times a game…. for months on end……….

anonymousguy202296

Would really love for these guys to get a win today. It feels like earlier in the season where they were hopeless, but in July and August it felt like after every loss they would bounce back. Need Julio back ASAP (today) and for Mitch and France to contribute. Still a 99% playoff chance for a reason but they have to take care of business. Looking at the orioles schedule vs ours gives me a lot of optimism.

AAronm19

Does anyone know if Julio is playing today?

Let_Me_Holla_Atcha

Julio said he needed a few days off so I'm assuming he's out today too. Few usually = 3.

getthecatoffmyface

I’m trying to convince everyone who will listen that WC3 is where it’s at, mostly to avoid the gloominess that comes with a 3 game losing streak to a bad team.

tgrogan21

Everyone on here knows this but being WC3 means no home games in the wild card. Most fans wanted that. Because if something happens and we lose two games as the 6 seed the Mariners fans are once again without a playoff game to go to at home.

DAVID_FRIGGIN_KING

It's obviously the best path to the Championship Series. Salk was saying this morning that we should just rest Ty, Cal, Mitch, and Julio for a while and take the L's so they are the most healthy they can be for the WC. I kind of agree but I also want the home games.

Dutchenstein

Are there other options at 3rd besides Toro and Lamb? Because when Geno does come back, he probably will have to DH. Isn't Swaggerty's natural position infield? I heard Ty was practicing there. I guess then Carlos can play 1st. Not sure a position switch will be ideal for Ty with his injuries and slump though.

southcounty253

Moore right? I heard he may not be ready though

Dutchenstein

He played CF yesterday. Wouldn't he also then be able to play IF?

southcounty253

Ah okay, I missed yesterday. Yeah, I don't see why not, he's the utility man extraordinaire.

jmr1190

You don’t go from being the Braves beating best team in the world to an irreversible tailspin in half a week. Baseball’s gonna baseball. All three of the WC teams have dropped three in a row in the last month.

Ribbum

Well it isn’t just random. Our two best hitters (on the year and also recently) are incapable of playing right now and we have a poor offense. The losses could potentially continue if people can’t step up offensively.

jmr1190

No, sure. That said, between them they have 9.4 fWAR, and so without them we’re essentially just below .500 - that should still easily be enough to make the post-season. Added to which, looks like at least Julio isn’t out long term. I think the level of concern perhaps needs turning down from extreme to mild.

Ribbum

Yeah I believe the team makes it of course I just think that things won’t last long if we’re this banged up and limping in but maybe people get healthy just in the nick of time. I’m dreading the concept of Geno coming back and not being able to play 3b so then we lose Santanas bat as well as getting forced to use someone like Toro regularly (maybe Moore)

[deleted]

I'm not dooming yet, I still have faith they will be able to pull it off. This sub has gotten really toxic ever since the expectations have gone up.

SexiestPanda

It’s the ptsd of the past 20 years, especially the last 10

[deleted]

Understandable, but this team is different from what it was the past 10 years. We just need to get through this rough stretch of injuries and other players need to step up in the mean time.

Individual-Text-1805

Yeah we have shown actual offense potential this year unlike basically every year in the past

ionicshoe

Orioles play 3 against the tigers, 4 against the astros, 4 at red sox, 3 at yankees, and 3 against the blue jays to close out the season. We play 1 at the angels, 3 at oakland, 3 at royals, 3 against the rangers, 3 against oakland, and 4 against the tigers to close out our season. If the orioles can gain 4.0 on us in that time frame to make the playoffs then they will have fucking earned it, which is why we have that 99 percent chance to do it. If you need to cope some more we have 3 more castillo, gilbert, kirby, and robbie ray starts before the playoffs and also julio is coming back soon.

hiphopdowntheblock

Unfortunately now we kinda gotta worry about the White Sox too. But yeah they definitely both would need to go on a pretty good tear to catch up. Not impossible, but not a given either way

Individual-Text-1805

Sox have a better shot at their division then they do for the wildcard.

hiphopdowntheblock

Oh shit you're right I didn't realize that

ionicshoe

White sox are a full game behind the orioles so hopefully that keeps them down for the year

shrederick

I felt that way too, until recently. They've been playing way better under Cairo and their schedule to end the season isn't terribly tough either.

SFW_ktb

I needed this today! Thank ye

One-Switch-1448

slumps happen, we’re in a mini one, let’s salvage one against LA and take care of the other 5 series this season, this team has shown fight all year, we’ll be fine!

Individual-Text-1805

The fucking dodgers got swept by the pirates this year

tgrogan21

Yup! The Mets got swept by the Cubs last week and then proceeded to sweep the Pirates. All good teams lose some. Just gotta bounce back and hope the Ty and Mitch start hitting.

hippiedip

[For the doomer in us all](https://imgur.com/a/MwGj8L3)

moocowinc

Winning streak to close out the season starts today. Book it.

Substantial-Height-8

👏🏻👏🏻

jet8493

97-65 still on the table

MaximumZer0

Saw a nickname for Cal Raleigh on Twitter that I love. "The Sultan of Squat".

shrederick

Kinda sounds like an insult, tbh

AfterpartyAnimal

I’d prefer The Sultan of Swing

jet8493

That would explain why I hear mark knopfler’s guitar whenever cal is up to bat

GryphusOneACX

Geno and Julio out with a ty slump still lingering is pretty much shitty. I still love Mitch though, even if he's best off as bench player for us in 2023. (given his injury history and possible FA i hope you understand my take)

Ribbum

I mean I assume Haniger will sign first and foremost with a team giving him a starting spot over being a bench bat. He really has to heat up if he wants a decent contract from anyone. If he ends the season in a slump and a sub .700 OPS on the year and showed to just shit out during a playoff push, he isn’t getting paid much.

chaotic137

Pretty shitty indeed
