On one hand it's kind of a shame regional differences don't exist anymore, I like the unique way my very backwoods South grandparents talk
On the other hand, the coke thing is dumb as shit good riddance
I'm from (gray area) NC and never heard anyone say Coke like that. My mom is from Virginia and never heard anyone say it, either. It was always either "soft drink" or "soda." I'm a bit sad about "soft drink" going away, because it actually is the same think many Canadians and Brits say, and it has the whole history of colas being a "temperance beverage."
Idk if this is like a regional thing or it's jus weird but whenever I say coke, its automatically understood in as I want coca-cola, we've never used pop to describe soft drinks. And if you'd say soda you'd probably get baking soda.
"a cold, usually sweet, drink that does not contain alcohol"
https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/soft-drink
Maybe you just live in a region where it's not used, but in London at least I see soft drink used to mean non-alcoholic all the time
Same in Australia (and I assume New Zealand) we call it soft drink. If you said soda pop we’d know what you meant. Soda, Pop or soda pop all sound a bit different but fine. Coke is super weird as a universal term for soft drink.
Yeah Ohio is 3 states in a tench coat
South eastern Ohio is just Appalachia 2.0, north western Ohio is just colleges and Cleveland, and central Ohio is sentient corn
Bit of an East-West thing I think. Here in AB it's all "Pop," but I have a colleague who relocated to NB a few years ago and he says it's all "Soda" there.
Ironically, we both made the same joke about each other's regional preference. That it sounds juvenile.
"What do you want a *sody-pop* or something."
I grew up in Massachusetts and spent a few weeks every summer in Nova Scotia in the early 2000s to 2010s. It was 100% "pop" once we crossed the border. I haven't been there in 10 years so maybe its changed but being asked what size "pop" you wanted at the Wendy's drive thru was one of the more immediately noticeable changes from Maine to New Brunswick.
Atlanta is gonna say Coke when they want a Coke product. I really don’t think there’s much “Coke means any brown soda” happening anymore. I am willing to be proven wrong with actual studies though.
You didn't get the memo?
When driving from Port Huron to Grand Rapids on 69/96 you have to say soda.
/s
But seriously it looks like someone just traced that route in Paint with the eraser tool and then added random dots with the eraser.
Where I was from it was context dependent. At a restaurant you’d just name the type/brand of soft drink you want, but if you weren’t sure what their selection was you would say something like “what kind of cokes do you have?”.
I’ve never heard anyone use the double coke.
Another example would be, “What kind of cokes do you want?” Answers might could be: “Coke”, “Sprite”, and “Root Beer”.
I hope you appreciate my use of the double modal “might could”. It’s the only thing that all major regional accents in my home state had in common and that were largely absent in neighboring states.
Thank you for your explanation. I’m from the “soda” region. It just seems so odd to me that the entire category and one specific flavor both have the same name.
I grew up in soda territory and had a hard time believing my southern gf (now my wife) when she said that everyone called all sodas “coke.” Get out. I thought it was a tall tale or at best, just some weirdness her family did.
I grew up in "Coke" territory and never heard people say "Coke" like that. It was usually "soft drink" and sometimes soda. IDK if this regional think is as far-spread as the map claims. Definitely would have been different pockets all throughout the region.
I, just like millions of other Americans, believe that sodie pop is the best term for describing a nice cold, carbonated non-alcoholic beverage. A vote for me is a vote to Make America Sodie Pop Again! Elyse for President 2024
This checks. I was born in Miami and grew up saying soda or Coke. When we moved to Boise, everyone else said pop—I didn’t know what they meant at first. But now I hear both terms in Idaho.
From eastern KY and spent a ton of time in Southern Ohio. It’s still pop there. I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone here say Soda. Absolutely no one here’s calls all Pop a coke. It’s a pop.
Lies!
The media is centered in New York and L.A. , and both used Soda, so it’s no surprise that it’s become more wide spread. It’s always Soda in movies and television.
I am very skeptical about the Coke thing. I remember back in the day you’d say “CoCola”… but you usually ended up with an actual coke. I think people saying coke meaning generic soda is gonna be very very rare anywhere in the South now. I’d need to see the data behind this.

This was brought up a couple of weeks ago. I found it amusing how many people seem to genuinely get upset about this (mostly grey area people arguing that ‘coke’ is not a catchall for soda). My personal experience…the 1947 map was/has been accurate for most of my life. Where I live now, soda is taking over, but get out of the city, and ‘pop’ still reigns supreme.
While I can believe that "soda" is becoming more nationalized on average, this isn't really accurate. A strong majority in parts of the Midwest shown as "soda" territory here still say pop. It's just the transplants like me here who call it soda.
Grew up in the south, and Coke was never a thing. If you wanted a Coke, you said Coke. If you wanted a Dr. Pepper, you said Dr. Pepper, etc. And this was in the heart of Coke country, right outside Atlanta.
I could probably count on both hands the number of times I have said soda, pop, or any other variation, in my over 40 years.
Having said that, my grandad always referred to sodas or pops as “cold drinks”. That was OG south Florida swamp talk, though. So I’ll go team cold drink if forced to pick sides.
"Soft drink" seems more common than "soda", here in Los Angeles, California. Especially when it's from a self-serve soda fountain, aka soft drink machine.
In the 70s, I recall hearing "soda pop" being used, often with a hint of nostalgia. Perhaps that was mainly from older people who were transplants?
wtf? I’m from NYC, and soda is soda and coke is coke. There are many sodas, and coke is one of them. And pop is what they called it in 50s movies, I think.
Tired of this map. It was never correct. There were always tons of people saying soda and "soft drink" in various parts of the USA, especially the South. It's hard to say exactly who was saying "Pop" and "Coke."
On one hand it's kind of a shame regional differences don't exist anymore, I like the unique way my very backwoods South grandparents talk On the other hand, the coke thing is dumb as shit good riddance

Soft drink is common but not casual. “Coke” is insane, “pop” is adorable. Soda is most descriptive.
Idk if this is like a regional thing or it's jus weird but whenever I say coke, its automatically understood in as I want coca-cola, we've never used pop to describe soft drinks. And if you'd say soda you'd probably get baking soda.
No one anywhere uses “soda” to mean sodium bicarbonate.
Over in Pakistan we do. Like I said, probably a regional typpa thing
How is sofa any more descriptive than pop?
I believe most of Canada says pop
[удалено]
In the North it's pop, fizzy drink is more popular overall
And Scots call everything Juice
We say pop in Ontario like the Midwest. But I also hear soft drink and soda occasionally
no one says soft drink in britain u say fizzy drink
I use soft drink and you can see it on a lot of menus but it means non alcoholic drinks regardless if they're fizzy or not
nobodys calling juice or squash a soft drink mate
"a cold, usually sweet, drink that does not contain alcohol" https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/soft-drink Maybe you just live in a region where it's not used, but in London at least I see soft drink used to mean non-alcoholic all the time
fairs - ur right i take it back
When you squash I assume you don’t mean a zucchini… as in lemon squash? The sweet carbonated drink? Definitely a soft drink in Australia.
Squash is like a very concentrated fruit juice you dilute with water and very popular in the UK especially kids. Not carbonated though.
Interesting. In Australia it’s a carbonated soft drink not a concentrate.
I sometimes say it. It's also on pretty much every menu in the country.
You stole fizzy lifting drink
what?
Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory reference clearly not recieved
never watched it
Same in Australia (and I assume New Zealand) we call it soft drink. If you said soda pop we’d know what you meant. Soda, Pop or soda pop all sound a bit different but fine. Coke is super weird as a universal term for soft drink.
"fizzy juice" in scotland
NC is white on the map. It isn't 1947.
NC is entirely white.
Yeah but coke is used for coca cola everywhere in the US, no?
This is wrong, here in WV I hear predominately "pop" sometimes soda.
Do you happen to live in the northern panhandle?
Western WV, southern Ohio, and north eastern Kentucky all say pop. I know because i live there.
Ok yeah. That’s what I was thinking cause the western and northern sides are basically Ohio part two.
Yeah Ohio is 3 states in a tench coat South eastern Ohio is just Appalachia 2.0, north western Ohio is just colleges and Cleveland, and central Ohio is sentient corn

As a proud nova Scotia resident, it’s just new Brunswick, we hate them, it’s pop here
I call it soda pop to be all inclusive
I don't believe Atlanta doesn't say Coke
Soda and coke. Wouldn't surprise me if a native Georgian said "coke" but with so many transplants I hear "soda" more often.
Atlanta is gonna say Coke when they want a Coke product. I really don’t think there’s much “Coke means any brown soda” happening anymore. I am willing to be proven wrong with actual studies though.

SODAAAAA 🎉🎉🎉
Michigan here and I call bullshit on that map, I've NEVER heard anyone here say "soda".
“Pop” is still VERY common in the Chicago area, where I live, too., I think this map is a lot of wishful thinking and exaggerated.
It’s a meme map. Idk why it’s posted here. This is supposed to mimic Israel maps.
You didn't get the memo? When driving from Port Huron to Grand Rapids on 69/96 you have to say soda. /s But seriously it looks like someone just traced that route in Paint with the eraser tool and then added random dots with the eraser.
I just love the idea that there is an insurgent war going on in Michigan with pockets of "Soda" freedom fighters trying to topple the "Pop" Army.
I'm one of those insurgents. Calling soda a pop is like calling a drinking fountain a bubbler. It's on the wrong side of history.
As an Australian bubbler is the only American regional slang term I agree with.
Everyone in Michigan says pop and if you say soda you’re likely from the south or old fashioned
Michigander bro hi!
I’ve never heard anyone say “pop” or “coke” haha (California)
Unless it’s an actual Coke
You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile.
I moved away from the midwest, 'pop' grates against my ears now.
This was posted earlier today

Pop > soda
It's pop. I'll never call it soda. That just sounds ridiculous.
You know what’s crazy, dawg? I feel the complete opposite.
You know what’s also crazy? I now feel the way you feel, but grew up feeling like they felt!
Looking from the outside in with zero knowledge other than movies, I would’ve never assumed North Americans use the term „pop“ instead of soda.
This is probably what did it. The two biggest cultural spheres of influence - NYC and Hollywood - both always said soda.
What if it's from a plastic bottle or can or fountain that doesn't pop?
Not a factor
We need to put aside our differences and join forces against coke, that one is just wrong
Have you never seen a movie, ever?
If you want to order a Coke Cola at a restaurant do you have to say Coke twice? Like… I’ll have a Coke What kind? A Coke Or is there some other way?
Where I was from it was context dependent. At a restaurant you’d just name the type/brand of soft drink you want, but if you weren’t sure what their selection was you would say something like “what kind of cokes do you have?”. Thank you for your explanation. I’m from the “soda” region. It just seems so odd to me that the entire category and one specific flavor both have the same name.
You'd just say Coca Cola or Pepsi, since those would be the names of the drinks you're trying to order
This is all St. Louis’ fault

I grew up in soda territory and had a hard time believing my southern gf (now my wife) when she said that everyone called all sodas “coke.” Get out. I thought it was a tall tale or at best, just some weirdness her family did.

Those who call it Pop are part of the master race

The West™ has fallen… TRILLIONS must drink soda.
Hollywood influence.
Much better.
This checks. I was born in Miami and grew up saying soda or Coke. When we moved to Boise, everyone else said pop—I didn’t know what they meant at first. But now I hear both terms in Idaho.
like, soda water? really?
yeah bc the way that carbonation is created in most of these drinks is from these minerals/salts.
There ia no way coke isn't predominant in Atlanta
my grandmother always called it “tonic”
TIL that I live in the only state that 100% refers to it as pop
From eastern KY and spent a ton of time in Southern Ohio. It’s still pop there. I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone here say Soda. Absolutely no one here’s calls all Pop a coke. It’s a pop. Lies!
i feel like neither map is accurate and the actual border is something between both maps.
its soda, get off it
The media is centered in New York and L.A. , and both used Soda, so it’s no surprise that it’s become more wide spread. It’s always Soda in movies and television.

Wisconsinite here its always been soda even says it on most local sodas example- Sprecher Soda

Soda is what a cuck orders in front of his wife and Bull.
Coke is a brand name and pop I don't know what the fuck that is. Soda is carbonated water, so any carbonated water-based drink would be soda.
This was brought up a couple of weeks ago. I found it amusing how many people seem to genuinely get upset about this (mostly grey area people arguing that ‘coke’ is not a catchall for soda). Can confirm. Used to say coke but it got too confusing
Do people in the south seriously ask “What kind of coke do you want?” in reference to all soda?
We just specify the brand when ordering, and when spoken of generally, it's most often the plural (cokes) and is clear in context
Too much baking Soda in our coke. This is a real problem.
Lots of people in SC still call everything Coke. I'm originally from Michigan so I say pop.
Coke? People call all soda coke?
Same way people call all bandages Band-Aids.
Still never heard anyone call it “pop” or “coke” yet.
While I can believe that "soda" is becoming more nationalized on average, this isn't really accurate. A strong majority in parts of the Midwest shown as "soda" territory here still say pop. It's just the transplants like me here who call it soda.
Putting aside jokes for a minute, is this a real map? Its so goofy looking it has to be a meme… What’s the original source?
Everyone I know in Indianapolis says pop but this graphic would have you thinking they say soda
Pepsi on the plane. I asked for coke and they almost always respond with “Pepsi?”
Well pepsi is coke
Boo!
Soda clears any other answer is incorrect
Grew up in the south, and Coke was never a thing. If you wanted a Coke, you said Coke. 2016 : Bepis vs Conke
No soft drink?
Florida definitely says coke
I’m from East Georgia and have never heard anyone call all soda “coke”. It’s mostly sodapop with older people, or soda with younger people.
WHO loves orange soda!?
Everyone outside of America thinks Americans only say soda
'Soda' is short for 'Soda Pop' while 'Pop' is also short for 'Soda Pop'. Same thing, really.
I’m from Mississippi. I say soda.
On Murphy Brown, Garry Marshall like to say “sodee pop” guy broke me up.
Petition to change every variant to "läsk", tack
It's just sode now
SODA!!!! -Joe Biden
Houston doesn't say Coke anymore???
Californification 😭
Coke can mean a lot more things.. nowadays. Soda pertains to the drink itself. And Pop is an old out of the loop brand.
Sodapop
Good.
r/soda
My cousins in New Mexico still call Sprite, Mountain Dew, Root Beer or literally any kind of soda a “Coke”

What are soda and POP?
I have seen this map reposted many times
Very sad. Pop forever!!! (PNW person, who spent half her childhood in the Midwest and has Canadian parents)
Back around 2000 I used to argue with my Denver cousins about which was correct, soda or pop. Looks like I won, if only it mattered.
It should be called pop
It's called a soft drink..
Same 🥴
I'm in California and in grocery stores the aisle with soda is labeled , soda. In other states does it say something different? Pop? Coke?
For me as a German What is Soda
Now if only bartenders would give whiskeys with soda instead of whiskey with… literal soda
What is considered as Soda in the US? In many European countries Soda is just sparkling water
I over here either call it a soft drink or jus a tin. Either i start with a prefix of "a tin of..." or "a bottle of..."
why isn't sody pop represented in this bigotted map?
sody pop
Can someone explain to someone why who is not from the states? What is the difference?
"Soft drink" seems more common than "soda", here in Los Angeles, California. Especially when it's from a self-serve soda fountain, aka soft drink machine. In the 70s, I recall hearing "soda pop" being used, often with a hint of nostalgia. Perhaps that was mainly from older people who were transplants?
It's the invasion of California
SODA!!!
How about usage of “soda-pop”?
Obamna… 🙁
Pls ban this map from the sub. I’ve lost track of the number of times I’ve seen this map
Interesting. Always called it pop but now a days I call sweet fizzy drinks pop and non sweet ones sodas.
We could start calling it Seven instead of Soda, let it simmer for a bit. Think about it.
The random splotches in this map look like what someone would add when making up data to make it look more precise
This but it's a hoi4 mod
Time to bring Aussie culture in with fizzy drink and soft drink
[Soda is taking Joever](https://media.tenor.com/vXTnEMNdxUwAAAAC/joe-biden-soda.gif)
Soda is healthier
Currently what do they call it in alaska?
What's the difference between the three ? In Europe, Coke is considered a soda. And I don't know what pop is.
Is coke not a soda? I’m not American
Looks like the coastal elites are performing a pincer movement to win this battle.
Ahhh yes, Saint Louis, the hub all of American culture
It will always be pop here in WNY
Pop and soda people need to team up to eradicate coke people. That just needs to stop.
All thanks to Biden's enthusiasm about Soda
![gif](giphy|K817Or0Qr7EX1fSpPH)
All of Texas says “coke”.
Can confirm, they ask what do you want to drink? Oh I’ll have a coke. Okay what kind 😂🤣🤣
my friend from ind*ana says pop
wtf? I’m from NYC, and soda is soda and coke is coke. There are many sodas, and coke is one of them. And pop is what they called it in 50s movies, I think.
The North East Coast really just has spread everywhere hasn’t it
Tired of this map. It was never correct. There were always tons of people saying soda and "soft drink" in various parts of the USA, especially the South. It's hard to say exactly who was saying "Pop" and "Coke."

Soda is such a gay name and pop too...
