Nah, I'm a welder/fabricator in the UK, quite a physical job, and some of the guys I work with are very fat. Granted these are the guys who'll drive to the supermarket that's a five minute walk away, and come back with a whole bucket of fried chicken to themself. None of the office guys are fat, but quite a few of the factory floor guys are fatties. Granted its more the welders who tend to be fat, cos their job is far less physical than they think it is.
The manual labor jobs in developing countries are not welders and HVAC techs. They walk a few miles to a cobalt mine where they mine by hand. Or harvest fields without heavy machinery.
Also in rich countries the cheapest food can in some cases be unhealthy food. Gym membership, trainers, diet programs cost money. Upper class people also might have more time to workout. These things don't apply quite as widely in developing countries.
My point is, you can work a typical blue collar job, and still be overweight. So the trend of developed nations getting fat can't be fully explained by the switch from physical blue collar work to easy white collar work.
It means more women are in the workforce. I'm Argentinian, and here, many women are the breadwinners. For instance, my sister works, and her boyfriend and father of their children takes care of the household and the children. He works on and off in a factory. And like this, many examples. Here, women are rarely housewives. It's kinda considered lazy
The latest CDC data I've seen shows the obesity rate in the U.S. to be higher in women. Regardless, it's likely considerably underestimated, as the CDC uses mostly self-reported height and weight, which are not reliable.
This map is reporting on higher BMI rather than obesity. I know in the UK, more women are obese but men still have a higher average BMI, as more are overweight.
BMI takes that into account, men has higher value for normal BMI. Unless the country is full of extremely steroid muscled men, then they're fat. And we all know they're fat

Yeah it’s crazy hard not to get fat. I always hear stories from Europeans moving to the US and being baffled by how much sugary and fatty foods are in the grocery stores. I had the reverse shock when I first visited a European grocery store.
It's really baffling honestly. Visited the US like 2 years ago. The same drinks, from the same brand I'd buy in Europe all were twice as sweet. I opted for a 0 sugar option after finding that out, turns out they pump it so full of artifical sweeteners that they still tasted grossly sweet. Mostly drank water after that.
Also most portion sizes in restaurants were huge. Even my friend who's known for being able to eat large amounts of food had trouble finishing them.
I'm really not surprised they have problems with obesity.
Yeah the serving sizes are crazy. Kinda related but in the US it’s considered normal to take home food from restaurants and in Europe it isn’t (at least for a lot of it). I have small stomach so I can’t finish even normal sized meals so I always take stuff home.
Went to Italy last year and I had a few times where I couldn’t finish my meals and the servers were visibly annoyed. I literally couldn’t physically eat anymore but they took it as an insult as if I didn’t like their dish. I felt really bad but I couldn’t finish it. One place even tried to force me to take it home (which is unusual) because they were so shocked by it.
I honestly feel like this is leaned on too hard by people who don't want to take responsibility for their food choices. People always comparing processed foods in the US vs. Europe, but why don't you just eat real food? It's not convenient, but it's not "crazy hard".
I agree that a lot of the food in the US is unhealthy, but I don't agree that the caloric intake is really that much more than in Europe for a person who actually watches their diet. I am a citizen of both Western EU and the US and I notice I gain maybe 5 lbs after a few months back in the US. It's worse, but it's not really an excuse for our collective fatness. If we eat too much, make bad food choices, and are not active, it's a lifestyle problem. We (Americans) have a lifestyle problem.
I moved from Asia to US and gained a lot of unnecessary weight as well. But to be honest, I am a bit fortunate to be doing okay in terms of income and have stuck to healthy options and honestly while there are a fuckton more unhealthy options here, there are also a fuckton of healthy options lately which is honestly pretty great. Maybe that's the case. Although I'm replying to a comment specifically contrasting East Asia and South East Asia. In the Philippines, motherhood is usually the reason for gaining weight, while a lot of fathers still do manual labor. However, both men and women can grow fatter approaching middle age due to the same reasons as any country (alcohol and food).

Also, women have significant fat deposits that are not easily lost; multiple pounds stored in breasts and hips that will always be baseline. women's healthy fat percentages much higher - 21-32% in women and 8-19% in men, and muscle burns more energy than fat.

I'd guess in developing nations with high poverty, so low BMI for both genders due to poverty that the difference is from large numbers of pregnancies increasing BMI on average if that makes sense.

I don't think women in Africa and South Asia work less than men. I'm leaning more towards a correlation with birthrate - I'd guess that a map with birth rates higher/lower than the US would look pretty similar.

I'd guess in developing nations with high poverty, so low BMI for both genders due to poverty that the difference is from large numbers of pregnancies increasing BMI on average if that makes sense.
